Vineesha Arora Sarin: A Trailblazer in Smartphone Filmmaking & Champion for Women in Entertainment
Vineesha is an award-winning filmmaker based in Los Angeles, with roots in Mumbai, where her journey in the Indian entertainment industry began in 2000. She made her acting debut in Supari (2003), distributed by Yash Raj Films, before expanding into theatre, production, and filmmaking.
In 2018, Vineesha moved to Los Angeles to pursue her filmmaking career, setting up several A-grade Hollywood projects, including Tiger Heart, an action-adventure feature film on tiger poaching, and her passion project, End of Karma, a redemptive crime drama series. She also served as the executive producer of the indie horror film Natty Knocks (2022), directed by Dwight Little and starring horror icons Robert Englund, Bill Moseley, and Danielle Harris.
Vineesha is making history as a pioneer in smartphone filmmaking, becoming the first female director to shoot an entire feature-length film on a smartphone. Against all odds, she shot, wrote, produced, and directed her debut feature, Between Mountains (2022), during the pandemic. What began as a spontaneous creative endeavor evolved into a fully realized film that is breaking new ground in mobile cinema. Between Mountains premiered in Hollywood in 2021, is being distributed by Indie Rights, and has won numerous awards at film festivals worldwide.
Vineesha's journey into smartphone filmmaking began in December 2019, when she founded Lady With a Hat Productions and started experimenting with her iPhone as a cinematic tool. She wrote, produced, shot, and directed several award-winning short films under this banner, including Come Back to Me (2020) and By God There'll Be Dancing (2020). Encouraged by the critical acclaim and industry recognition-including support from the AFI Film Festival's Cannes edition, which introduced cellphone awards in honor of Karl Bardosh-Vineesha unknowingly carved a niche for herself in Hollywood's indie world.
In March 2023, Vineesha expanded her impact by establishing Women In Showbiz Everywhere (WISE), a global initiative dedicated to empowering and mentoring women in the entertainment industry. WISE was launched during the Pre-Oscar reception, Oscar Doc Visionaries, celebrating the remarkable achievements of women filmmakers in the documentary space. Through WISE, Vineesha continues to uplift underrepresented voices, offering mentorship, workshops, and career-building opportunities to emerging female and underrepresented storytellers.
A humanist and a seeker of all things spiritual, Vineesha infuses her storytelling with depth, emotion, and a profound understanding of the human experience. As a pioneer in mobile cinema and an advocate for independent filmmaking, she is breaking barriers and proving that powerful stories can be told with any tool in hand-ushering in a new era of accessible, groundbreaking cinema.
