William graduated from The Lawrenceville School and spent a post-graduate year at The Cranleigh School in Cranleigh, England. He was a 1988 graduate of Vassar College, where he majored in drama and film. Since his junior high school years, William starred or acted in a variety of productions at the schools he attended. He also earned a theatrical degree from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in 1991.

His lifetime passion was acting, but he was also a talented artist, essayist, and singer. A member of the Screen Actors Guild, William appeared in several films and acted in many musical and theatrical productions in New York and elsewhere. His film credits included "19 at 11," "Gods of New York," "Comic Times," and "Going to Hell in a Coupe Deville." He also appeared in "Unfaithful," "Being John Malkovich," "A Beautiful Mind," and others. Theater credits in New York included "Still," "Danton's Death," "Fire," "I Fell Off the Mountain," "Woyzeck," "A Tale of Two Cities," "The Dreyfus Affair," "Dr. Faustus," "King Ubu," and others. He also performed in many musicals in New York and elsewhere, including "My Fair Lady," "Maria," "Pretzels," "Sullivan and Gilbert," "A Little Night Music," "Li'l Abner," and "Company." "Babes in Toyland" and "Peter Pan" were national and international tours, respectively.
