Dcu Canon Film 'Blue Beetle' Is Now Streaming for Free on Tubi
Image
Released in 2023, Blue Beetle serves as one of the final entries in the much-maligned Dceu. However, the fan-favorite superhero is already set to return in James Gunn's rebooted DC Universe, and for good reason. A standalone coming-of-age origin story, Blue Beetle impressed critics and audiences alike with its lovable protagonist, led by Cobra Kai's Xolo Maridueña. Fortunately, it's never been easier to catch up on the DC film, as it's now streaming for free on Tubi.

Blue Beetle is now available to stream at no cost with ads on Tubi starting Feb. 1. The film follows Jaime Reyes (Maridueña), a young college graduate who is imbued with superpowers when he comes into contact with an alien relic, the Scarab. Guided by a Jarvis-like voice, Jaime has the ability to create any kind of weapon he can imagine (sort of like Green Lantern), as well as flight. The first live-action...

DC Star's New Hero Tattoo Has Confirmed To Me The Dcu Was Entirely Right To Keep 1 Dceu Actor
Image
Xolo Mariduea in Blue Beetle is one of the best superhero castings in recent memory. His performance has the right balance of humor and heart for the fledging hero Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle, and Mariduea is perhaps the film's biggest asset. Though Blue Beetle ultimately underperformed at the box office, it fared more favorably with critics and fans, earning a 77% critic score and a 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie is a fun ride that does its source material justice, pun unintended.

Blue Beetle follows Jaime after he accidentally bonds with an alien scarab that gives him superpowers. Directed by Angel Manuel Soto, it also stars George Lopez, Becky G, Bruna Marquezine, Damin Alczar, Adriana Barraz, Harvey Guilln, Raoul Max Trujillo, and Susan Sarandon. According to Soto, Mariduea was always his top choice to play Jaime. The director stated: "His persona is pretty much the character of Jaime Reyes.

Cobra Kai & Blue Beetle Star Xolo Mariduea May Have Just Been Cast in the MCU
Image
The collapse of the Dceu has opened up many opportunities for actors who worked with DC to jump ship to Marvel Cinematic Universe. We recently saw this play out with Henry Cavill having a small cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine, where he played one of Wolverine's many variants shown in the film. While DC head James Gunn previously said Blue Beetle is canon to his new universe, and that means star Xolo Mariduea would be returning, that could be difficult if the latest rumor surrounding Mariduea and the Nova series is true.

As of right now, there's not a lot of information available about Nova other than the fact it's in development for Marvel. Instead of a feature-length film, it's a show set to debut on Disney+. On top of that, Mariduea's name is now listed on the Production List. There's been no official word about whether Mariduea has been cast,...

10 Highest Grossing DC Movie Heroes Ranked By Box Office
Image
The DC Universe's vast cinematic history has led to several heroes receiving box office success, but how do they rank against each other? DC's live-action feature film history stretches back to 1951, with Superman and the Mole-Men kickstarting the long line of movies based on superheroes in the DC world. Since then, there have been several franchises featuring DC characters, from the order of movies in the Dceu to the many different franchises featuring the brand's most popular heroes.

There is no denying that some of the more commonly featured heroes include Batman and Superman, with many highly-ranked Batman movies being released over the decades. The same can be said for Superman, with the upcoming list of Dcu movies and shows from James Gunn continuing this trend by centering around the Man of Steel. However, where DC's other heroes are concerned, box office success has ranged from lucrative to flat-out unprofitable.

'I'm So Excited': Blue Beetle Star Shares Hopes for Upcoming Animated Series
Image
Blue Beetle will soon buzz on TV screens after the titular film received many plaudits from critics. Xolo Mariduea, who portrayed the character in the now-defunct DC Extended Universe, reveals how "excited" he is about the planned animated series and what he hopes to see from Jaime Reyes on the show.

Speaking on his Lone Lobos podcast, Mariduea shared his thoughts on the recently announced Blue Beetle TV series, an extension of the Dceu movie released last year. The Mexican actor expressed enthusiasm for the show, believing it provides an opportunity to put a bigger spotlight on his superhero. "Wowza, Blue Beetle is back! I'm so excited," Mariduea said. "To get to do the...I think there is an opportunity on each platform to really make something shine, right? In the movie, you had the opportunity to do the movie stuff. In a TV show, you have the chance to do long-format stuff.

Blue Beetle Stars React to Dcu Animated Series Announcement
Image
Blue Beetle is officially heading to the DC Universe. Xolo Mariduea and Bruna Marquezine, who starred in the 2023 live-action movie, have reacted to the recent report stating that the young superhero will be receiving an animated continuation from DC Studios.

In an Instagram Stories post on his personal account (via X), Mariduea shared a screenshot of the Deadline article on the Blue Beetle animated series, with the caption, "Aaaaa so happy to announce. Blue Beetle lives," followed by three blue heart emojis. Marquezine also shared the news on her Instagram account (via X), but her Stories post was captionless. While no actors are officially attached to the Blue Beetle animated series yet, Mariduea and Marquezine sharing the news on their social media accounts strongly suggest that both will be returning for the continuation.

Disney’s Latin America Execs Did Not Expect Robert De Niro to Love Argentina’s ‘Nada’ Script
Image
Even Robert De Niro could not resist the great script for Disney mini-series Nada.

Leonardo Aranguibel, VP, head of production operations & strategy at Disney for Latin America, and Mariana Pérez, VP, head of development & production for the same patch, sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss what they called their “mission” for The Walt Disney Company in Latin America – but not before explaining how the veteran actor was brought aboard the Argentinian comedy drama.

Nada, which premiered on Disney’s streaming service Star+ in October last year, follows wealthy food critic Manuel Tamayo Prats (Luis Brandoni) who faces crisis after the death of his housekeeper. Set in Buenos Aires, the series is narrated by Manuel’s old friend, Vicent Parisi (De Niro), who eventually travels to the city to help his old friend.

“We sent the script to Mr. De Niro,” Aranguibel says at the international market and networking...

A Blue Beetle animated series is taking flight at DC with new and returning talent at the helm
Image
Dios mio! Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are scuttling toward expanding the reach of Blue Beetle with a new animated series. Miguel Puga has been working on the Blue Beetle animated series since early 2024 and will act as the project’s showrunner and director, with Cristian Martinez writing the scripts.

Angel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, the top talent behind DC’s 2023 film, return for the Blue Beetle animated series as executive producers alongside John Richard. Galen Vaisman, who helped executive produce the movie, oversees the animated adaptation. Casting for the project remains a mystery, though Deadline says DC is in contact with multiple stars from the live-action film. Although deals still need to be implemented, their response was positive.

The Blue Beetle animated series continues the story started in Soto’s live-action film. If audiences connect with the animated series, DC could continue the story in a new live-action sequel.

Blue Beetle Nails a Vital Part of DC Comics That Other Movies Didn’t
Image
This Blue Beetle article contains spoilers.

At the start of Blue Beetle’s second act, protagonist Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) asks an important question: “Who the hell was Blue Beetle?”

A lot of viewers wondered the same thing when the Warner Bros. movie came to theaters earlier this year and they’ll likely be asking it again now that the movie is streaming on Max. People don’t ask that same question of Superman, Batman, or Wonder Woman, but not because Blue Beetle is at best a C-lister in the DC Comics bullpen. Rather it’s because the man behind the Blue Beetle mask has changed several times since Charles Nicholas Wojtkoski debuted the character in 1939.

The big-screen adaptation introduces Blue Beetle as Jaime Reyes, who is a recent college grad forced to the superhero identity after receiving an alien scarab from Jenny Kord (Bruna Marquezine), the daughter of inventor Ted Kord,...

Susan Sarandon, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, Adriana Barraza, George Lopez, Raoul Max Trujillo, Bruna Marquezine, Harvey Guillén, Xolo Maridueña, and Belissa Escobedo in Blue Beetle (2023)
With the recent conclusion of the SAG-AFTRA strike, actors can now freely discuss projects they previously had to keep quiet about during the labor dispute. One such actor is “Blue Beetle” headliner Xolo Maridueña, who took to social media and thanked his supporters in his first public remarks since the DC superhero film was released: “This is for all our inner child.”

“‘Blue Beetle’ is sacred to me, from the family you see on screen to the ones I made off, this movie has tore me down and built me back up in ways I’ll never be able to articulate,” Maridueña said on Instagram. “To celebrate this moment behind closed doors has been one of the most formative moments of my life but it helped me realize, there is no dollar sign, no tweet, no headline, that can quantify the feeling inside a child who sees their ancestry is heroic.

Directed by Ángel Manuel Soto, the film centers on college graduate Jaime Reyes ( Xolo Maridueña) who gets chosen to become a symbiotic host to an ancient alien biotech relic that turns him into the superhero known as Blue Beetle. As one of the most preeminent Latino superheroes in comic book history, the “Blue Beetle” cast is predominantly Latino, including Bruna Marquezine, George Lopez, Raoul Max Trujillo, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar and Belissa Escobedo, along with Susan Sarandon.

Blue Beetle: Release Time, Story, Cast & Every Detail You Need To Know
Image
Blue Beetle released as part of a series of DC movies with lackluster box office results, raising questions about its future in the DC Universe. The movie introduces Jaime Reyes, the third generation of Blue Beetle, who discovers an alien artifact and becomes a young hero facing conflicts with antagonist Victoria Kord and villain Carapax. Director Ángel Manuel Soto and James Gunn have expressed interest in continuing Jaime's story and finding a way for it to be a part of the new DC Universe, potentially in an Elseworlds side-franchise.

Blue Beetle released during a series of revelations about the Dceu and Dcu, raising a lot of questions about the status of the movie and whether its cast would continue their roles in the future. Blue Beetle was initially described as having the "first Dcu hero", though it was revealed it wouldn't be the first Dcu film, as this would instead be Superman: Legacy.

‘Blue Beetle’ Gets Digital Release on Prime Video

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Variety may receive an affiliate commission.

It seems that “Blue Beetle” has come full circle. The superhero movie was originally slated as an HBO Max (now simply known as Max) streaming release, but then moved to a theatrical run during development. And while it was a box office disappointment — despite getting the top spot during its opening weekend in early August — “Blue Beetle” might find more of an audience when it’s released on digital on September 26.

It’s available to stream as a digital purchase in 4K Ultra HD for $24.99 on Prime Video. If you aren’t a Prime member, you can sign up for a free trial here.

Buy: Blue Beetle $24.99

The Ángel Manuel Soto-directed movie tells the story of Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña), a recent-college graduate who returns home to the fictional Palmera City in Florida.

Blue Beetle's Digital Release Date Brings The New DC Hero Home
Image
Blue Beetle, directed by Ángel Manuel Soto, was a surprise hit at the box office, particularly among Jaime Reyes' Latin community fan base, despite challenges faced by Warner Bros. Discovery and the SAG-AFTRA strike. The film will be available digitally starting September 26, following its theatrical release over a month ago. However, its availability on Max may not be confirmed for some time. Blue Beetle has earned $121.5 million globally, making it DC's lowest-grossing film. However, Jaime Reyes will continue to be part of the Dcu's future.

Blue Beetle is ready to fly its way onto digital release. Jaime Reyes' first live-action cinematic adventure hit theaters in August, and although it marked a new step back for DC and Warner Bros. Pictures in a critical year, it managed to surprise a large part of the audience, especially the hero's faithful fan base.

‘Blue Beetle’: Digital and 4K Blu-Ray Release Dates Announced
Image
‘Blue Beetle,’ the latest and second-to-last Dceu movie, was released last August, and as it was anticipated, the movie didn’t really do well at the box office. Despite positive reviews from critics and audiences (78% on Tomatometer and 92% on Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes), the movie grossed only $120 million worldwide, which makes it the lowest-grossing Dceu movie ever, falling behind this year’s ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods,’ which grossed only $133 million.

Xolo Maridueña’s debut as the Blue Beetle received favorable criticism, and we can’t blame the movie for its commercial failure. It’s a fact that this movie was released at the worst possible time, and with everything going on around DC Studios and the ongoing strikes, this movie was never given a chance to succeed. Still, James Gunn previously said that he has plans for Maridueña’s Blue Beetle in the future of his Dcu, so...

Here's How To Watch Blue Beetle At Home
Image
Ángel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer's "Blue Beetle" (check out our review here) may not have been a box office success, but the latest venture from DC Studios and one of the last films of the DC Cinematic Universe before James Gunn and Peter Safran revamp the studio is thankfully one of the most fun. Not to mention, it's also one of the rare instances where a superhero movie embraces cultural specificity, instead of just perpetuating the same ol' white stories over and over again. If you've yet to see the film, here's what to expect.

Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) is a recent college grad returning home and ready to take on the world, but a lot has changed over the last four years, and home looks quite a bit different. Thrust into a bit of a quarter-life crisis, Jaime searches for purpose when he comes across an ancient...

Blue Beetle Is a Triumph for Latine Hollywood In More Than One Way
Image
The following contains spoilers for Blue Beetle, now playing in theaters.

DC's latest film Blue Beetle, starring Xolo Maridueña in the title role, is breaking barriers for representation in Hollywood. The superhero genre -- on film at least -- is historically and overwhelmingly white, with little room for actors, creators and characters of color in meaningful positions up until very recently. Blue Beetle blew critics out of the water with a 78 percent "Certified Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It also performed excellently with audiences -- particularly in the Latine and Hispanic demographic -- and received a 91 percent audience score. The overwhelming success the film has with moviegoers is a hope that the film will continue to receive good word-of-mouth press and start breaking box office records in the coming weeks.

Blue Beetle's first weekend's box office reports show that it dethroned Barbie for the first time in weeks to...

Blue Beetle Director Explains the Significance of [Spoiler]’s Death
Image
This story contains Major Spoilers for Blue Beetle.

Blue Beetle director Angel Manuel Soto shared the reason why they decided to kill off one of the titular hero’s loved ones.

For DC fans who have already watched Blue Beetle, one of the superhero movie’s most emotional sequences was definitely the sudden death of Jaime Reyes’ father Alberto, who dies from a cardiac attack while Jaime was trying to help his family escape from Victoria Kord’s minions. Speaking with Collider, Soto opened up about the heartbreaking scene, confirming that the original screenplay initially didn’t have any character deaths. When DC Studios suggested Soto to include an emotional character death, the filmmaker thoroughly discussed it with screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer in order to find a way to incorporate it into the storyline that would make sense for Jaime’s journey to becoming a hero.

Blue Beetle director says studio pushed for emotional death (Spoiler)
Image
Spoilers for Blue Beetle. Consider yourself warned. While Blue Beetle may be more light-hearted than other superhero stories, that doesn’t mean that there can’t be some life-or-death stakes.

Related Box Office Predictions: Gran Turismo looking at soft opening

The death of a family member or close friend in order to motivate a superhero has been done again and again, but… it does work. While speaking with Collider, Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto said that the original plan was for “nobody” to die, but DC Studios pushed for an “emotional death.” Unfortunately, that meant that Reyes family patriarch Alberto (Damián Alcázar) had to die, but Soto and screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer wanted his death to mean something more.

“‘How can we create the lowest of lows with the family member?” Soto said. “And how that low is not just another death in the superhero genre, but how that low...

Blue Beetle Director Addresses Post-Credit Scene, Teases Sequel Plans
Image
Warning: The following contains spoilers for Blue Beetle, now playing in theaters

Ángel Manuel Soto has plans in mind for a Jaime Reyes/Ted Kord mentorship, should Blue Beetle return to the Dcu.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Soto teased the possibilities raised by Blue Beetle's mid-credits scene, which revealed that Jenny Kord's presumed-dead father and former Blue Beetle is still alive. "We really wanted to find a way to bring Ted Kord back. It'd not only be a part of the family drama that we've explored in the movie, but canonically, it's also something very special," he said. Soto also expressed interest in paring Jaime up with DC superhero and longtime Blue Beetle ally Booster Gold down the line, pointing out, "when James Gunn and Peter Safran came into power, they already promised the whole idea of exploring Booster Gold, and it helped us to keep the idea that Ted Kord is still alive.

Blue Beetle director explains how mid-credit scene could continue in the new Dcu (Spoilers)
Image
Spoilers for Blue Beetle. Consider yourself warned. Although Blue Beetle may not be performing at the box office the way Warner Bros. was hoping it would, the movie has received warmer reviews than the last few DC movies. The film also has a connection to the new DC Universe as James Gunn has said that Blue Beetle is the first Dcu character. Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto told THR that the mid-credit scene could provide a clue to that Dcu future.

The Blue Beetle mid-credit scene reveals that Ted Kord, the original Blue Beetle, is still alive. As Warner Bros. didn’t tell Ángel Manuel Soto to cut the tease, he’s optimistic that it will have the chance to be continued.

‘Blue Beetle’ Director Ángel Manuel Soto on That Mid-Credit Reveal and How Reshoots Led to His Favorite Scene
Image
[This story contains spoilers for Blue Beetle.]

Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto is hopeful about the future of his characters and storylines, and the mere presence of the film’s mid-credit scene is a big reason why.

DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn has already confirmed that Xolo Maridueña’s Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle has a future in the new Dcu, which officially kicks off with 2025’s Superman: Legacy. But Soto previously told THR that he expects Jaime to have company, including the extended Reyes family and Jenny Kord (Bruna Marquezine).

With the mid-credit scene revealing that Jenny’s father (and the second Blue Beetle) Ted Kord is still alive, Soto likes the odds of this thread continuing since Ted is also tied to Booster Gold, a character that has a Max series in development. And considering that Gunn and his co-dc boss Peter Safran have cut a number of scenes from the last remaining...

Even WB Admits The Big Problem With The Dcu's New Superhero
Image
Blue Beetle's relative unknown status compared to Justice League heroes is a factor in its box office performance, as acknowledged in the movie itself. By setting up Blue Beetle as a solo hero operating on a smaller scale, the movie avoids repeating the Justice League's world-ending threat trope and allows for more variety in the DC Universe. Jaime's role as a community-focused hero, similar to Spider-Man, highlights the importance of his character and sets the stage for a future of standalone heroes in the expanding DC Universe.

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Blue Beetle.

Blue Beetle admits the big problem with the DC Universe's new hero. Xolo Maridueña has made his debut as Jaime Reyes in Blue Beetle, with the movie showing how the young character comes into contact with the alien scarab Khaji-Da, bonding with it and becoming the DC Universe's first movie character. Box office: ‘Blue Beetle’ barely beats ‘Barbie’ to win weekend, as ‘Strays’ goes to the dogs
Image
Any hopes that there may be another overall box office boost from the “Barbenheimer” sensation crashed and burned this weekend, with Warner Bros’ “Blue Beetle” taking number-one on the lower end of expectations. Read on for the weekend box office report.

Starring Xolo Maridueña, Bruna Marquezine, Susan Sarandon, and George Lopez, “Blue Beetle” came into the weekend with solid reviews, but they didn’t help make up for the fact that DC’s first Latinx superhero to get a solo movie was also a lesser-known character. After making $10 million on Friday (including $3.3 million in earlier previews), the movie took in an estimated $25.4 million for the weekend in 3,871 locations.

That’s an even lower opening than the $26.2 million for James Gunn‘s 2021 DC movie “The Suicide Squad,” even though that was still released amidst the pandemic with a simultaneous streaming release on HBO Max. In some ways, this might be the...

Image
Blue Beetle's post-credit scene hints at the return of Ted Kord, the original Blue Beetle, who was presumed dead. Exciting possibilities arise as his whereabouts are finally revealed. The upcoming Booster Gold show could serve as the perfect platform to explain Ted Kord's disappearance. His friendship with Booster Gold, a time traveler, opens up a range of narrative options. Box Office: ‘Blue Beetle’ Beating ‘Barbie’ With $25M to $27M, ‘Strays’ Needs Louder Bark
Susan Sarandon, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, Adriana Barraza, George Lopez, Raoul Max Trujillo, Bruna Marquezine, Harvey Guillén, Xolo Maridueña, and Belissa Escobedo in Blue Beetle (2023)
It had to happen sometime. After ruling the box office roost for four weekends, Barbie is falling to second place as DC’s superhero pic Blue Beetle takes the top spot.

Blue Beetle is on course to open to $25 million to $27 million in North America after earning $10 million Friday, including $3.3 million in previews. It remains to be seen what impact the looming hurricane has on grosses in Los Angeles, the movie’s top market, and other parts of the area.

It’s understandable why the superhero pic may be feeling a little blue. Not only is Blue Beetle coming in behind expectations — heading into the weekend, tracking had suggested $28 million to $32 million — but also it is looking at one of the lowest openings ever for a title in the DC Extended Universe, not adjusted for inflation.

Director Ángel Manuel Soto’s Blue Beetle is Hollywood’s first live-action superhero film...

Blue Beetle's mid-credit scene hints at another character's possible appearance in upcoming Dcu projects. Director Ángel Manuel Soto expressed interest in including both Ted Kord and Booster Gold in future Blue Beetle films, aligning with James Gunn's plans for Booster Gold in his Dcu vision. The potential team-up of Jaime Reyes, Ted Kord, and Booster Gold in the Dcu opens up exciting possibilities, but whether it will happen on the big screen or on the streaming platform Max is yet to be determined.

It turns out that Blue Beetle isn’t a Ted “Kord”—less adventure after all. Director Ángel Manuel Soto’s first foray into the world of DC Comics has landed in cinemas, and now it’s up to the film to decide the fate of its hero Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña), aka the Blue Beetle. But if Soto gets his wish,...
