Matthias Hoene’s 2023 crime thriller Little Bone Lodge can be best described by the phrase that ‘appearances can be deceiving.’ Joely Richardson stars as Mama, the protagonist of the movie, where she’s the protective mother of a teenage girl named Maisy (Sadie Soverall) and the primary caregiver of her disabled husband Pa (Roger Ajogbe). Things were going fine until two brothers, Jack (Neil Linpow) and Matty (Harry Cadby), arrived on a stormy night, seeking immediate help. Soon, everything spins out of control to reveal a dark secret about this wholesome family. Here’s a recap of everything that happens in the 2023 thriller Little Bone Lodge.
Where Does Mama Take Jack?
On a stormy and rainy night, a family of three is celebrating a birthday. The mother and the daughter prepare a cake for the girl’s disabled father, Pa, and they feed it to him. The house is way...

Joely Richardson in Little Bone Lodge Photo: Signature Entertainment
Making its début as part of the Frightfest strand at this year’s Glasgow Film Festival and now available on digital platforms, Little Bone Lodge is a small scale thriller which makes a very big impression. Writer Neil Linpow plays Jack, a criminal on the run with his childlike but unpredictably violent young brother, Matty (Harry Cadby). After their car crashes, the two seek refuge in an isolated farmhouse in the Scottish highlands, waiting for their boss to arrive, but what they don’t know is that the householder (Joely Richardson) has secrets of her own which she will do anything to protect. As Matty forms a tender bond with sheltered teenager Maisy (Sadie Soverall), whose disabled father (Roger Ajogbe) sites helplessly on the sidelines, events conspire to plunge everybody’s carefully made plans into chaos.

Secrets are revealed as Richardson’s matriarch turns out not to be just a simple farmer’s wife when protecting her family
This story is set in a farmhouse in present-day Britain, but its occupants – hypercompetent Mama (Joely Richardson), ailing Pa (Roger Ajogbe) and teenage daughter Maisy (Sadie Soverall) – live like they’re in the 1950s, with no mobile phones or landline, no TV and certainly no internet. Nevertheless, they seem content enough even if Mama is a bit overprotective of Maisy. Perhaps that’s due to the fact that Pa wouldn’t be much help in a crisis, given he uses a wheelchair and is nearly mute, heavily medicated with the painkillers that Mama dispenses on a strict schedule. It’s understandable that she would be hesitant to admit the strangers who come hammering on the front door in the middle of a ferocious storm, pleading desperately for help...

"She can be glorious, or filled with wrath..." Signature Ent. in the UK has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror film titled Little Bone Lodge, formerly known as The Last Exit. There's no US date set yet, but it's available on VOD later in May in the UK. Set during a vicious storm, two criminal brothers on the run seek refuge in a desolate farmhouse. Taking the resident family captive, they find the house holds dark secrets of its own. Sounds like another Texas Chain Saw Massacre inspired horror with the overused trope that the random home owners are the evil ones in this story. Little Bone Lodge stars Joely Richardson, Neil Linpow, Sadie Soverall, Harry Cadby, Roger Ajogbe, and Euan Bennet. It looks like another messy mish-mash of horror ideas and finicky characters that won't amount to much. For horror fans only... // Continue Reading ›...

“It’s said that mother is the name for God on the lips of all children,” comes the narrator’s voice as the camera drifts through a remote stretch of the Scottish highlands. Quoting The Crow may not exactly raise expectations for Matthias Hoene’s most recent venture into horror, which screened in the Frightfest strand at the 2023 Glasgow Film Festival, but set your worries aside. This is a great little horror thriller and his best work to date.
It’s founded on a strong script by Neil Linpow, who also stars as Jack, one of two brothers on the run in the aftermath of a robbery. The other is Matty (Harry Cadby), who arrives at the farmhouse, where most of the action plays out, in a panic after their car has gone off the road. Jack is badly injured and at risk of bleeding out. He’s tremendously lucky that the owner.
