Gojira, Pantera, and Slayer Bring the Metal at Final Black Sabbath Concert
Image
Three of the most powerful metal bands on the planet were among the acts to perform at the “Back to the Beginning” final Black Sabbath concert on Saturday (July 5th) in Birmingham, England, as Gojira, Pantera, and Slayer all delivered electrifying sets.

Gojira performed “Stranded,” “Silvera,” and their Olympics song “Mea Culpa” with opera singer Marina Viotti before closing with a cover of Sabbath’s “Under the Sun.” Meanwhile, Pantera came out swinging with a 1-2 punch of their own classics “Cowboys From Hell” and “Walk,” before taking on two Sabbath songs: “Planet Caravan” (which they famously covered on their album Far Beyond Driven) and “Electric Funeral.”

Slayer, who reunited to play select shows last year, kicked off their set with “Disciple” and “War Ensemble” before covering Sabbath’s “Wicked World.” The legendary thrash act then played “South of Heaven,” “Raining Blood,” and “Angel of Death” to close out their performance,...

Image
The “Back to the Beginning” concert has begun! The all-day event at Birmingham, England’s Villa Park, leading up to the final performances from Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath, kicked off on Saturday (July 5th) with mini-sets from Mastodon, Rival Sons, Anthrax, Halestorm, and Lamb of God.

Mastodon got things started with two originals (“Black Tongue” and “Blood and Thunder”) before taking on Sabbath’s “Supernaut,” with drummer Brann Dailor handling lead vocals, and Gojira’s Mario Duplantier, Tool’s Danny Carey, and Slipknot’s Eloy Casagrande each adding percussion.

Rival Sons sandwiched a cover of Sabbath’s “Electric Funeral” in between two originals, while Anthrax performed “Indians” and Sabbath’s “Into the Void.” Halestorm played “Love Bites (So Do I)” and “Rain Your Blood on Me” along with a cover of Ozzy’s “Perry Mason,” and Lamb of God performed “Laid to Rest,” “Redneck,” and Sabbath’s “Children of the Grave.

The new certification, marking 20 million copies moved in the United States alone, represents a massive jump from the LP’s previous certification, 16-times platinum, in 2012. “The Black Album” continues to sell consistently 34 years after its arrival, as a constant presence on the weekly Billboard 200 chart.

Marvel taking on a crossover of Godzilla proportions
Image
Marvel Comics understands how to keep its fans interested in reading its content, namely with anticipated comics crossovers. From Secret Wars to Avengers vs. X-Men, Marvel loves bringing together two insurmountable forces between its covers, but nothing has been as huge as what they are doing now. Literally.

Top 10 ‘Godzilla’ Movies of All Time Ranked
Image
Gojira came to be only as a consequence of one of history’s worst moments. Nine years after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1954, producer Tomoyuki Tanaka had a vision for a monster movie. He wanted to bring those horrors of nuclear destruction to life. Inspired by America’s The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, Tanaka conceived his creature as a walking nuclear bomb, a tummy-churning reminder of the bombing, saying, “Mankind created the bomb, and now nature was going to take revenge.”

Under US occupation still, the horrors of radiation were fresh in the memory of Japanese people. Survivors, quite vividly, described the ant-walking alligators – people who were burned so badly their skin was blackened and leathery, with red holes where their mouths should be. They could not scream and could only make an insect-like murmur.

Gojira Win Best Metal Performance Grammy for Olympics Anthem “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!)”
Image
Gojira won the 2025 Grammy for Best Metal Performance on Sunday (February 2nd). The award was presented during the Premiere Ceremony that streamed online prior to the main televised ceremony.

The French metal band took home the Grammy for “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!),” along with collaborators Marina Viotti and Victor Le Masne. Gojira stole the show during the Summer Olympics opening ceremony in Paris back in July, delivering a mesmerizing performance of the song outside the windows of the Conciergerie building, a former prison and courthouse that sits along the River Seine.

In the Best Metal Performance category, Gojira beat out Judas Priest’s “Crown of Horns,” Metallica’s “Screaming Suicide,” Spiritbox’s “Cellar Door,” and Knocked Loose’s “Suffocate” featuring Poppy.

In a somewhat confusing moment, the house band at the Grammy ceremony played Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” as Gojira walked to the stage to receive their award.

The single sees the New Zealand band one again melding technical thrash metal with lyrical content that is pertinent to its native culture. 10 Silliest Storylines From The Godzilla Franchise
Image
While more recent Godzilla movies have revisited the terrifying power, threat, and majesty of the radioactive lizard, his history is still filled with silly story lines and puzzling plot choices. Toho in particular returned Godzilla to his deadly, metaphorical roots with two of the most acclaimed movies in his 70-year career on the big screen: Shin Godzilla and Godzilla Minus One. Legendary’s Monsterverse, on the other hand, has progressed from the gritty reintroduction of Big G in Godzilla (2014) to the comic book-level insanity of Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire.

To be clear, one of Godzilla’s most important features, and a big reason why he’s remained popular for so long, is his adaptability. He can serve as a powerful symbol of the horrors of nuclear war just as easily as he can act as a family-friendly merchandise inspiration. In fact, some of Godzilla's most memorable moments...

Gojira Unveil Official Music Video for Olympics Song “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!)”: Watch
Image
Gojira have released an official music video for their electrifying performance of “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!)” at the Olympics opening ceremony in Paris this past summer.

The video captures the performance in all its glory, with the members of Gojira playing the song from platforms outside the windows of the Conciergerie building, a former prison and courthouse that sits along the River Seine. As they deliver the metal version of the French Revolution-era song “Ah, Ça Ira!,” they are joined by opera singer Marina Viotti, who floats down the river in a wooden ship.

This new official version of the video gets rid of the semi-annoying commentary from the original broadcast’s NBC announcers, and lets the music and visuals do the talking.

At the end of August, Gojira released an official single version of the song, which went on to be nominated for Best Metal Performance at the upcoming 2025 Grammy Awards.

Godzilla Vs. King Kong: The Complete MonsterVerse Timeline Explained
Image
One shared cinematic universe that has only improved in quality as its grown in scope and size is the MonsterVerse. Starting with 2014's "Godzilla," the MonsterVerse quickly grew to include crossovers with other iconic kaiju, most notably including King Kong. The cinematic universe has also spread to television, from the animated Netflix series "Skull Island" to Apple TV+'s live-action series "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters." Along with these shows, an extensively detailed history for the MonsterVerse has taken shape, particularly with regards to the role of the monsters, or Titans, in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Meticulously plotted, the MonsterVerse has created an entire timeline of itself, complete with recurring characters at different stages of their lives and, of course, plenty of Titans. Through its different projects, the MonsterVerse offers varied character perspectives on the same major events, including Godzilla's pivotal fight in San Francisco, marking the Age of Titans.

This Great 33-Year-Old Monster Movie Completely Flipped Godzilla's Greatest Rivalry
Image
Godzilla has played the hero more often than not in his 70-year career on the silver screen, but in one classic Toho movie he was the villain while one of his biggest rivals saved the day. Godzilla began as a terrifying destructive force, acting as a metaphor for the horrors of nuclear war, but he quickly evolved into a more family-friendly heroic monster during the Showa Era of films. Some of the most underrated Godzilla movies returned him to his monstrous roots, and in one 33-year-old movie, that villainous status put him at odds with one of his greatest rivals.

Over the years, Toho has changed the alignment of many of its monsters, with very few exceptions. Mechagodzilla, for example, was an all-powerful alien weapon in his first two appearances before evolving into a human-made defense mechanism against the destruction of Godzilla on Earth. Mothra has never appeared as a true villain,...

Gojira Frontman Joe Duplantier: “Join the Vegan Revolution”
Image
Gojira made worldwide headlines this past summer when they turned an old French Revolution song into a mind-blowing heavy metal anthem at the Olympics opening ceremony in Paris. Now, frontman Joe Duplantier is urging people to “join the vegan revolution” as part of a new campaign with PETA.

Duplantier, who has been vegan for 10 years, stars in a new PSA video for PETA in which he discusses his own experience living on a plant-based diet, including the moral and health benefits that go with it.

“I became vegan for the animals,” says the metal singer-guitarist in the video. “But another benefit to being vegan is for your health. I have more energy now when I perform since I became vegan.”

He adds, “When my second child was born, we decided to go vegan as a family. It’s going fabulous. They love not hurting animals.”

At the end of the clip,...

‘Godzilla’ Looks Better Than Ever 70 Years Later With New Criterion 4K Release [Review]
Image
Godzilla premiered in November of 1954, eight months to the day after the United States set off its first hydrogen bomb. Indebted to but distinct from pioneering giant monster movies like 1925’s The Lost World, 1933’s King Kong, and 1953’s The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, the seminal Japanese kaiju film is more than just another special effects-driven creature feature. Working from a story by Shigeru Kayama, writer-director Ishirō Honda and co-writer Takeo Murata provide an outlet for post-war Japan’s fears.

In the atomic age parable, an ancient, 164-foot creature dubbed Gojira ravages Tokyo after being awakened from its deep-sea hibernation by nuclear testing. Scientist Daisuke Serizawa (Akihiko Hirata), salvage ship captain Hideto Ogata (Akira Takarada), paleontologist Kyohei Yamane, and his daughter Emiko Yamane (Momoko Kōchi) are tasked with fulfilling their social obligations to stop the seemingly indestructible beast.

The decision to use an actor (Haruo Nakajima and Katsumi Tezuka) in a...

Monstrous New Trailer for 'Godzilla: Minus One' Re-Release This Year
Image
"There's no way to stop it." The big radioactive lizard is back! Again! Japan's Toho is planning another 2024 re-release of this beloved, Oscar-winning, monster movie mega-hit Godzilla: Minus One. The re-release is part of the 70th Anniversary of Godzilla celebrations (more info here), because the original Gojira movie opened in Japan on November 1st way back in 1954. So this is also re-releasing on November 1st in the US as well - after a successful run last winter. Prolific Japanese filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki directed this epic action sci-fi - starring Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, Kuranosuke Sasaki. Post-war Japan is at its lowest point when a new crisis emerges in the form of a giant monster, baptized in the horrific power of the atomic bomb. The movie originally opened in Japan last November and in the US in December, becoming a hit worldwide before...

Gojira Frontman: A “Shame” Metallica Haven’t Headlined Super Bowl Halftime Show
Image
Gojira’s instantly legendary performance during the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics this past summer beamed heavy metal into households around the world, hopefully paving the way for other major events to spotlight metal bands.

Frontman Joe Duplantier was recently asked on Full Metal Jackie’s radio show (as transcribed by Loudwire) about the potential for such a phenomenon happening at the Super Bowl or the Grammys. At first, Duplantier reached for the full-tilt extreme: “I’d love to see Meshuggah at the Super Bowl.”

While Meshuggah might be a pipe dream for such a mainstream event, Duplantier quickly pivoted to a very realistic option: the biggest metal band on the planet, aka the mighty Metallica.

In fact, Duplantier went as far as to suggest that Metallica should have already headlined a Super Bowl halftime show, given their overwhelming influence across the globe.

Gojira’s Olympics Performance Majestically Projected on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris: Watch
Image
Gojira’s thrilling performance during the opening ceremonies of the Paris Olympics earlier this summer was momentous on a global scale for both the band and heavy metal in general. We might be biased here at Heavy Consequence, but it clearly stole the show.

As a post-celebration of Paris hosting the Summer Games, Gojira’s performance of “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça Ira)” was projected against the famous Arc de Triomphe monument in Place Charles de Gaulle over the weekend.

Gojira themselves weren’t there this time around, as they are in the midst of supporting Korn on a North American tour (pick up tickets here). Instead, a striking visage of the band from the opening ceremony — performing outside the windows of the Conciergerie building overlooking the River Seine — was projected against the archway at night.

Really, the only thing missing from the reprisal was the band.

Meanwhile, frontman Jonathan Davis and company performed three songs each from classic ’90s albums Life Is Peachy, Follow the Leader, and Issues, with each album represented in three-song encore: “Falling Away From Me,” “Good God,” and the show-closing “Freak on a Leash.” Among the highlights was the band’s first performance of “Hey Daddy” since 1999.

The blistering “Soft Spine” finds singer Courtney Laplante in full scream mode, as the song delves into extreme metal territory. It’s the Canadian band’s first new music since last year’s The Fear of Fear EP, save for a guest spot on Megan Thee Stallion’s “Cobra” remix.

While a proper full-length follow-up to Spirtibox’s 2021 debut album, Eternal Blue, has yet to be announced, a press release promises “more exciting things to come from the band in the near future.”

Snoop Dogg Goes Swimming with Michael Phelps at Olympics: Watch
Image
The 2024 Summer Olympics are well under way in Paris, and while the world’s nations are still competing to make the podium, there is one individual who has already secured more than a few metaphorical gold medals: Snoop Dogg. In a funny segment that aired during Tuesday’s primetime Olympics broadcast, the rapper linked up with Michael Phelps in the pool to prove his lungs remain as strong as ever.

In the clip, “Mr. 23-Time, The Og, The Goat,” Michael Phelps, attempts to teach Snoop race-ready swimming technique. Adorned in a custom American flag robe, Snoop dives in to see if he has what it takes to achieve athletic glory — just don’t offer him any goggles.

Snoop Dogg has been all over this year’s Olympic coverage. In addition to being the happiest, most experienced (in a way) torchbearer and running a mock 200-meter trial, he’s an NBC correspondent for the event.

Gojira Talk Epic Olympics Performance: ‘We Wanted to Show What Metal Was About’
Image
Anyone who tuned in to the 2024 Olympics opening ceremony on Friday hoping for big pop music performances like Celine Dion’s and Lady Gaga’s was probably not prepared to see Marie Antoinette, beheaded and bloody, singing the 19th-century French anthem “Ah! Ça Ira” with the French heavy metal band Gojira. The quartet took the reins from the decapitated queen with aplomb, ending her reign with double-kick bass drums, pneumatic rhythm guitar, and frontman Joe Duplantier’s growled interpretation of the lyrics, which insist that after revolution, everything will be just fine.

Celine Dion surprises Paris –and world– by closing out opening ceremony of 2024 Summer Olympics
Image
The opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris was filled with tons of memorable moments. Really, you can’t go wrong with your favorite pick, with everything from Lady Gaga opening the ceremony to the athletes’ arrival on the Seine to the metal beheaded Marie Antoinette (with Gojira!) all worthy answers. But perhaps nothing stood out more from the Olympics opener than Celine Dion’s return to singing, performing Édith Paif’s “L’Hymne à l’amour” two years after unveiling her stiff-person syndrome diagnosis.

Following the ceremonial lighting of the cauldron, Celine Dion – underneath a lit Eiffel Tower and the Olympics logo – broke into the Piaf classic (translating to “Hymn to Love”), surprising the thousands upon thousands in attendance. If you missed it live, do yourself a favor and watch it because it is a stunning performance. Everything is so perfectly aligned here: one of the finest singers...

Olympics Opening Ceremony Review: Paris’ Lengthy Spectacle On The Seine Lost In Translation On The Small Screen
Image
The skies over a soaked Paris remained overcast for Friday’s 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony as the promised trés unique spectacle on the River Seine proved rudderless despite some superstars, a historical mixtape, and a grande balançoire or two.

Despite the theatre on the grandest scale with landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral and the Louvre as the backdrop, the opening ceremony simply wasn’t great TV.

Even with the rain pouring down, things definitely improved once darkness fell over City of Lights more than two hours into NBC’s live coverage. Night unveiled more of the drama of Paris itself, the river, and the performers who came alive as the barge-propelled parade of nation and their 205 delegations came to an end.

In the end as Celine Dion made her much-hyped and pitch-perfect appearance under the Olympic rings on the sparkling Eiffel Tower and past Gold medalist...

Gojira Are Performing at the 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony
Image
The Paris Olympics opening ceremony just got a lot more metal: the acclaimed French band Gojira have been revealed among the musical acts set to perform during the ceremony on Friday (July 26th).

French newspaper Le Parisien and Time Out both report that Gojira’s performance will consist of a collaboration with opera singer Marina Viotti, who has previously “experimented with jazz, gospel and heavy metal,” per her website.

Does that mean Gojira will just be providing musical accompaniment while Viotti sings? Or will we get to hear some death growls at the Olympics?

Metalheads who may have passed on watching the ceremony should now be more inclined to tune in and find out. Gojira certainly stand out against the other performers: Céline Dion, Lady Gaga, and Aya Nakamura. Stage director Thomas Jolly is orchestrating the opening ceremony, which traditionally celebrates the local heritage and culture of the host country.

Star Trek Actor Praises Godzilla Minus One While Simultaneously Hinting the MonsterVerse is “F**king cultural appropriation”
Image
2023 saw quite a few masterpieces (even though the box office disasters were more), and Godzilla Minus One was one of them.

Besides the tremendous critical praise it has earned from global audiences and critics, the movie seems to have gotten on the good side of quite a few celebrities in Hollywood as well. One of these is the Star Trek actor, Simon Pegg.

Godzilla Minus One. | Credit: Toho Co., Ltd.

However, as compared to other notable reviewers, Pegg seemed to have a mixed opinion on the movie and the MonsterVerse.

This is because, on the one hand, while he greatly acknowledged the gem of a work that the film was, bringing about a new take on the Kaiju and its relationship with humans, he simultaneously also hinted that the MonsterVerse is “f—ing cultural appropriation.”

Simon Pegg Likes Godzilla Minus One but Can’t Stand the MonsterVerse?

How The Indonesian Government Unintentionally Gave Birth To Godzilla
Image
According to the lore of Ishiro Honda's original Godzilla film "Gojira" (1954), the title monster came into being as the direct result of nuclear tests held in out in the Pacific. An unseen ancient sea creature was exposed to radiation from said tests, causing it to mutate into a 130-meter-tall amphibious dinosaur-like behemoth that climbs out of the ocean and lays waste to cities in Japan. It crushed buildings underfoot and can breathe clouds of destructive radiation. Nothing seems to be able to stop it.

"Gojira" was partially inspired by the real-life Daigo Fukuryu Maru disaster, an even in which a Japanese fishing vessel was exposed to nuclear radiation during the United States' Castle Bravo H-bomb tests. One of the sailors died, the rest of the crew was sick, and the Japanese public became concerned that the fish may have been tainted. Nuclear fears were justifiably high in 1954, making Honda's film incredibly timely.

Godzilla Minus One: A Roaring Success
Image
by Hiranmoy Lahiri

The article contains spoilers

Godzilla (Gojira), the beloved fictional movie monster, is a favorite among viewers. Since 1954, Godzilla has been wreaking havoc on screens, terrifying and delighting audiences. The genesis of this creature can be traced back to something profoundly serious and devastating: thermonuclear weapons and the tangible threats they pose to humanity.

The first instalment in the series was “Godzilla” (1954), directed by Ishirō Honda and produced by Toho Studios. Going beyond a simple horror/monster movie, it drew inspiration from a real-life event involving the ‘Lucky Dragon No. 5' (Daigo Fukuryū Maru) tuna fishing boat. This vessel was navigating in waters near the Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands, not far from the area where the American military had chosen to conduct a test of a hydrogen bomb (a thermonuclear device). The United States government had predicted that the area would be safe, but the power...
