Nurys Mateo nearly didn’t return to compete on The Challenge: Battle of the Eras following a rough Season 39.

In Battle For a New Champion, she found herself in challenging circumstances due to her relationship with her boyfriend, Horacio Gutierrez, which caused friction with potential allies.

That led to a surprising vote situation from someone she considered her friend and multiple elimination appearances for Nurys just before the final.

She defied the odds to win two eliminations, sending four competitors home, to reach her first final on The Challenge.

The drama and physical exhaustion of participating in Season 39 left Nurys with a sour taste regarding a return to Battle of the Eras.

However, she revealed why she decided to return for another season soon after filming the Battle for a New Champion reunion.

On The Challenge: Battle of the Eras, Paulie Calafiore faced one of his rivals from a previous season, Theo Campbell.

Both competitors were part of the Era 4 team, but since Theo finished last in the daily challenge for the Eras Invitational, he called out Paulie as who he wanted to face in the elimination.

Horacio Gutierrez and Michele Fitzgerald were the team’s first-place winners, and they gave Theo what he requested.

While Paulie was eager to return to the show and received a physical elimination, it didn’t quite go how he’d hoped.

The Era 4 teammates battled in what many cast members and viewers call a classic headbanger, Hall Brawl.

Theo, taller and heavier than Paulie, was able to seize victory from his opponent in the event quickly. Unfortunately for Paulie, he was eliminated from the season and received rough post-elimination injuries that took weeks of recovery.

MTV's The Challenge has gathered alums from different eras of the hit reality show for its milestone 40th season of the reality competition series, called The Challenge: Battle of the Eras. However, a few contestants appeared to have unresolved feuds, including Nurys Mateo and Olivia Kaiser. While the 39th season featured both of them as close friends, it was revealed that their friendship went through a rough patch after the season concluded. But just as viewers expected the drama between them to escalate following their intense battle during the Hall Brawl, the friends-turned-enemies seem to have patched things up already.

Hall Brawl is back, and it’s claimed its first set of victims on The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras. On Wednesday’s (August 21) episode, almost half of the contestants across all four eras had to go into the arena to duke it out for the chance to stay in the castle. And while there were three other games in play — Pole Wrestle, Balls In, and Give Me Shelter — the group to draw the most fearsome elimination type was the one that’s probably the least familiar with that format: Era 4. From the youngest generation of vets, Theo Campbell and Nurys Mateo were automatically sent into the ring after they each placed last in the daily challenge, and things got pretty dramatic when it came to the vote-in. Tonight on “The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras,” the Challengers arrive to the Arena to see classic, brutal eliminations from each era awaiting them. Sixteen people will fight in the sand, only eight will return. The losers learn they will be sent off with a parting gift of karma for the remaining players.

This year, the longest-running reality competition series embarks on its monumental 40th season. “The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras” features 40 legendary competitors from the series’ 26-year history representing their “Challenge Era” in an epic battle for the ages where legends will collide as they strive to immortalize their names as Challenge 40 Champions and earn their share of the one million dollar prize. As usual, “The Challenge” is hosted by T.J. Lavin.

The Challenge typically includes many traditions, including cast members running into the house to fight over which rooms they get and a celebratory toast to kick off each season.

Fans were likely surprised when Johnny Bananas, who was in the cast of Season 40, Battle of the Eras, didn’t give the toast he typically does when on the show.

Instead, returning MTV Og and two-time champion Rachel Robinson gave the toast and celebrated the women at the start of the epic new season.

Meanwhile, production filmed another toast that didn’t appear in the Battle of the Eras Launch Special or the premiere episode.

However, Bananas shared that footage, which he somehow obtained to reveal during the season.

He called it the “best 70 seconds of television to never make air” as it focused on his speech.

One episode in and “The Challenge” is already crushing it on the ratings front. The “Battle of the Eras” premiere saw the biggest season-to-season growth on share in the franchise’s history, TheWrap has exclusively learned.

Overall, the premiere share for the MTV original was up 63% compared to last season, meaning that 6.6% of all households who were watching TV that night tuned in to watch “The Challenge” this season versus the 4.06% from last season’s premiere episode. “Battle of the Eras” was also the highest-rated season premiere for the franchise in three years, back when Season 37 debuted in 2021.

Ratings for the Season 40 premiere versus last season’s were up 20%. “Battle of the Eras” saw a 0.81 in ratings as opposed to the 0.675 the series saw last season. This marks the biggest season-to-season premiere growth when it comes to ratings in six years.

The 40th season of “The Challenge” is a big one for fans.

Johnny Bananas called out previous cast complaints about living conditions during MTV’s The Challenge: Battle of the Eras.

With Season 40, Bananas is on his 22nd season of the competition show, so he’s experienced various living conditions.

Among his rougher experiences on the show may have been MTV’s The Island and Total Madness seasons, both of which he won.

For his latest season, he’s one of 40 cast members competing for a $1 million prize, which involves not only daily challenges, eliminations, and the final but also coexisting with his 39 castmates.

Battle of the Eras was filmed in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and The Challenge house, which seemed like a castle, appeared in the Launch Special and premiere episode.

However, before any episodes aired, there were some mentions online or in interviews about disliking the conditions or treatment by production during filming.

Faysal “Fessy” Shafaat is among the notable absences from The Challenge: Battle of the Eras cast.

His absence is curious because he’s won more daily challenges and appeared in more seasons and finals than several other Era 4 team picks.

The male competitors chosen include former Big Brother stars Kyland Young, Paulie Calafiore, and Josh Martinez, along with Horacio Gutierrez and Theo Campbell.

While Paulie, Horacio, and Theo each appeared in at least one final, Fessy competed in three. However, Josh and Kyland have yet to reach a final.

During his Fessin Up Podcast, the former Big Brother houseguest addressed his absence from the Season 40 cast with his co-host.

However, Fessy seemed against replacing a certain member of the Era 4 team and defended him as a “safe bet” for the cast.

With The Challenge: Battle of the Eras premiere, viewers saw cast member reunions, new meetings, and renewed rivalries.

Some of the biggest feuds and rivalries came from the most recent Era teams, including Era 4.

The 10-person crew included friends-turned-rivals Olivia Kaiser and Nurys Mate.

Theo Campbell and Paulie Calafiore are also part of the crew.

In the first episode, host Tj Lavin unveiled a colossal twist: an early batch of eight eliminations, called the Era Invitational, would significantly reduce the cast.

Each squad would lose one man and one woman, based on the worst-performing competitors and whoever the daily challenge winners opted to send in against them.

That immediately set the stage for potential showdowns between the previously mentioned Era 4 stars.

Toward the end of the Season 40 premiere, the four Era teams deliberated about who would go into eliminations.

For The Challenge‘s big 4-0, the show has gathered alums from all different eras of the show and put them together for one big generational showdown. The trouble is, there’s some unfinished business between some of the challengers who are being mashed together into these mega-teams. While Tori Deal and Amanda Garcia won’t be making nice any time soon despite being on the same team for Era 3, the outlook is probably a bit brighter for Era 4’s Olivia Kaiser and Nurys Mateo, whose dustup is far more recent and less ingrained. Johnny Bananas is among the show’s biggest stars, so it’s only fitting he’ll be one of those 40 stars competing for a share of the $1 million prize.

He’ll face other top-notch competitors and longtime castmates, including Darrell Taylor, Derrick Kosinski, Mark Long, Ct Tamburello, and Jordan Wiseley.

However, more than 40 people appeared on The Challenge over its 39 seasons, and fans have already mentioned significant snubs.

He’ll compete in a starstudded season featuring 40 cast members selected from the reality TV competition show’s 39 seasons.

The season’s format involves four teams of 10 players each, divided by the eras of MTV’s The Challenge they are most associated with.

The former Big Brother star is part of a new promotional clip featuring several of his castmates from the upcoming season, known as Battle of the Eras.

Along with Josh is his Era 4 teammate, Olivia Kaiser, who reached the final in her rookie season with Horacio Gutierrez.

The Challenge Season 40 will unleash a starstudded lineup of cast members representing the extensive history of MTV’s competition series.

Appropriately named Battle of the Eras, four teams represent four eras, each featuring 10 cast members picked from the show’s 39 seasons.

On Tuesday, the first official trailer for the new season arrived with hard-hitting moments featuring the show’s significant stars.

“We’ve chosen the toughest players in 40 seasons,” host Tj Lavin says as images of the various competitors arrive on-screen.

In the footage, viewers see the 40 stars who will step onto the playing field, including Johnny Bananas, Chris “Ct” Tamburello, Jordan Wiseley, Cara Maria Sorbello, Amanda Garcia, Tori Deal, and Tina Barta.

The trailer also teases plenty of exciting situations viewers will see, including one superstar’s potential season-ending injury and a possible heated moment as an Og calls out a castmate.

The all-vets season of “The Challenge” is officially here. In the exclusive first trailer for Season 40, “Battle of the Eras,” host Tj Lavin returns to present new twists and tougher competition than ever.

“Era I started it all. Era II introduced Fresh Meat,” Lavin says in the video below. “Era III elevated rivalries and romances, and Era IV brought the game global.”

This season, kicking off on Wednesday, August 14, at 8 p.m. Et, features four groups of competitors from the past 39 seasons of the MTV reality series, produced by Bunim/Murray Productions. The cast must first compete at the Era Invitational, eliminating the weakest players within their own era to earn a coveted spot on their team.
