Cash Cobain is leading a procession of young New Yorkers down Irving Place towards Union Square Park in Manhattan. It’s a sea of weed smoke and Hellstar hoodies, a few hundred deep, marching along like it was a parade. Cash, the 26-year-old rapper-producer responsible for the increasingly inescapable hits “Fisherrr,” and “Dunk Contest,” ushers the scene calmly, even as NYPD sirens sputter and wail in the background. His hand extends towards the sky as he live streams the whole thing on his Instagram. A homing beacon for the crowd,...

Michael Gordon isn’t one for subtlety. The songs that the New Jersey artist makes as Mk.gee froth and fizz and occasionally freak out, making their unwieldy production not just noticeable, but an integral part of the songwriting. Take “New Low,” the brisk two-minute opener to his exceptional debut album Two Star & The Dream Police: its percussion has the lightness and congeniality of a schoolyard hand-clapping game, but it’s set atop a wobbling synth bass that underlines his contemplative lyrics. He sounds both resentful and filled with pity, pointing...

Burial has released his new double single, “Dreamfear / Boy Sent From Above”.
Spanning around 13 minutes each, “Dreamfear” and “Boy Sent From Above” thematically fit together, flowing as a tapestry of clicks, pops, buzzes, atmospheres, samples, and irresistibly dancey passages of breakbeat grooves. “Dreamfear” opens with a spoken word sample saying “I am the high one/ I am the lord of ecstasy,” which sets the tone, appearing in “Boy Sent From Above” as well, almost like a through line proclaiming the songs’ intoxicating allure.
Available today on streaming services, “Dreamfear / Boy Sent From Above” will be released on 12-inch vinyl on February 9th. Pre-orders are ongoing.
Arriving via Xl Recordings, the double single marks Burial’s first release on a label other than his longtime home, Hyperdub, with whom he shared his two full-length albums Burial and Untrue. Now on Xl, Burial joins artists like The Smile, Jai Paul, Arca, BadBadNotGood,...

In 2010, British musician Jai Paul emerged on Myspace with “Btsu,” a brooding, ambient hymn for a generation. “I know I’ve been gone a long time,” he sings on the chorus. “I’m back, and I want what is mine.” The posturing feels more spiritual than literal. Paul’s music seemed to come from somewhere between the past and the future. Even today, attempting to explain the song’s impact almost feels like recounting a dream. Drake’s longtime producer, Noah “40” Shebib, flipped Paul’s opening credo on the track:...

Former Newsround star Lizo Mzimba made an unexpected “on stage” feature at Coachella over the weekend.
During the desert festival’s opening weekend, the BBC presenter was projected on a jumbo screen during UK artist Jai Paul’s solo Coachella debut on Saturday 15 April.
Midway through the songwriter’s set, an old photo of Mzimba from his Newsround days appeared behind him.
“Never ever imagined that a picture of me from my Newsround days would end up being projected on a huge screen at Coachella at the weekend,” the entertainment correspondent tweeted.
Alongside a screenshot taken from a recording of the concert, Mzimbo added: “Very honoured and grateful. Thank you @Jai_Paul.”
Several fans joyously responded in the comments, with one writing: “No way! Please tell me the back story of this.”
“Inspired a generation!” praised a second. “How? Why? Wonderful but there are Big questions,” another said.

Best known for blending classical Hindustani ragas with Western musical influences, Pakistani singer-composer Ali Sethi is a unique find on the Coachella lineup this year. The prestigious L.A.-based festival scheduled to take place in April is one of the most popular musical events in the world and considered a trendsetter in music.

The largest music festival of the spring season has just released its lineup.
Like recent Coachella lineups, international artists are set to star in several prominent positions. Korean pop group Blackpink and Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny headline the festival’s first two days. Blackpink is currently at the pinnacle of the ongoing international K-pop phenomenon while Bad Bunny’s 2022 album, Un Verano Sin Ti, was the first Spanish-language record to top Billboard‘s year-end U.S. album charts.
Frank Ocean, who was scheduled to headline the 2020 festival that was canceled due to Covid-19, will headline the third and final day. Ocean has not performed in public since his Blonde days in 2017.
Perhaps the lineup’s most significant shock is Jai Paul, a UK electronic artist even more elusive than Ocean, who will give his first-ever live performance. His 2007 demo recording “Btstu,” was hosted on his MySpace page, and in...
