Based on Kenji Maruyama’s Akutagawa Prize-winning novel and scripted by manga artist Awosuke Fukuchi, “At Noon” marks the directorial debut of Koichi Goto, a former assistant to Kazuo Kuroki. Released by Atg in 1978, the movie stands as a largely forgotten entry in the company’s catalog, yet also reflects the decline in quality that characterized its final years.

The story revolves around Tadao, a young man who has failed to adapt to life in Tokyo. His return to his hometown of Shinano Omachi is marked in the most ominous way, with thunder and torrential rain underscoring his homecoming.
