10 Most Underrated Stephen King TV Shows And Miniseries
Image
One of the most prolific and best-selling authors in American history is Stephen King, who's written countless beloved books across a career spanning 50 years. Primarily known for his work in the horror genre, King has expanded his thematic reach to include crime, fantasy, and science fiction, sometimes under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. Many of King's works have been adapted into film and television, with adaptations in the latter in both the ongoing and limited series format. And like any other author, especially one with King's prodigious output, some adaptations are going to go under-appreciated and overlooked.

Simply put, there are a multitude of Stephen King television adaptations, with many not getting their just due during their initial release. Whether overshadowed by more prominent adaptations or relegated to more audience-neglected platforms, even King's name doesn't guarantee a show's success. Fortunately, many of these series' reputations have improved over time, with subsequent...

Why Steven Spielberg and Stephen King’s Planned ‘90s Horror Collaboration Never Happened
Image
Stephen King loves to watch. Over the years, he hasn’t shied away from giving reviews about the latest projects. But he isn’t just a fan. Apart from writing numerous best-selling novels, the popular author has served as a screenwriter on several movies and TV shows. On television, he has penned scripts for productions like The Stand and Storm of the Century. He also wrote an episode of The X-Files. On the big screen, his screenwriting work stretches as far back as the early ‘80s when he made his debut with George A. Romero's Creepshow.

Apart from writing, King has had an interest in producing his movies and shows, though he has a hit-and-miss trend in this space. After the failure of Maximum Overdrive in the ‘80s, many expected him to stick to what he knows best, but he has persisted. King’s love for cinema has been...

Where Was Stephen King's Rose Red Filmed? Mansion & Seattle Filming Locations Explained
Image
Rose Red, a television miniseries loosely adapted from Shirley Jackson's novel, The Haunting of Hill House, was filmed in Seattle, Washington, particularly in Thornewood Castle. Other locations used in the series include the University of Washington campus, the iconic Space Needle, and the Mount Baker neighborhood. Interior scenes were filmed at the Sand Point Naval Space, including the construction of sets for the Rose Red mansion's great hall, and the Artic Building served as the mansion's library.

Stephen King loosely adapted Shirley Jackson's 1959 novel The Haunting of Hill House into a television miniseries, Rose Red, set in Seattle, Washington, where all three episodes were filmed. The horror show revolved around an infamous haunted mansion in the Pacific Northwest, and the name of the house was Rose Red, hence the name of the series. A group of parapsychologists and psychics traveled to the mansion to investigate the hauntings and supernatural happenings,...

Is Rose Red Based On A Stephen King Book? Inspirations Explained
Image
Rose Red is not a Stephen King adaptation, but rather a loose adaptation of Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House, with parallels to the Winchester Mystery House. The marketing for Rose Red intentionally blurred the lines between fiction and nonfiction, with a tie-in book and a fake university website to make it seem like a true story. Rose Red may feel familiar at first because it taps into the familiar themes of ghost stories and haunted houses, which are the lifeblood of urban legends.

With the author's name attached to the project, it may seem like Stephen King adapted Rose Red from one of his books. The horror miniseries tells the story of Dr. Joyce Reardon and her group of psychics who go to Seattle's Rose Red mansion in search of proof of the supernatural. Rose Red came out in 2002 with a mixed reception. However, since Hulu added...

Stephen King's Rose Red Cast & Character Guide
Image
Stephen King's miniseries Rose Red had mixed reviews upon release but has gained new popularity since being added to Hulu's catalog in 2023. The miniseries allowed upcoming actors like Nancy Travis, Kimberly J. Brown, and Melanie Lynskey to showcase their abilities. Matt Keeslar played the role of Steve Rimbauer in Rose Red and has since had notable roles in films like Scream 3 and series like Dune.

Stephen King's underappreciated miniseries Rose Red includes a number of dynamic characters and a talented cast to bring them to life. In 2002, ABC released a three-part miniseries with a story by King. The show follows Dr. Joyce Reardon, a paranormal psychology professor who brings a group of psychics to the Rose Red mansion in hopes of finding scientific data that proves the existence of the paranormal. Once there, the team faces the evil spirits tethered to the house due to previous deaths.
