Lizzo Appeals Sexual Harassment Lawsuit, Saying It’s An “Attack” On Free Speech
Image
Lizzo is once again trying to get the sexual harassment lawsuit against her thrown out, with her attorneys asking an appeals court to toss the case for free speech reasons.

Lizzo was sued in 2023 by former backup dancers for sexual harassment and cultivating a hostile work environment, which the singer denied doing. Lizzo and her team of attorneys, including prominent Hollywood defense attorney Marty Singer, tried to get the case dismissed using an anti-slapp statute that is often utilized to end cases threatening free speech. While a judge dismissed parts of the lawsuit last year, particularly accusations that Lizzo fat-shamed a dancer, he allowed the rest of the case to move forward.

Now, Lizzo is trying to appeal the judge’s decision by doubling down on her free speech rights, with her lawyers arguing that the suit is “an attack on Lizzo’s First Amendment right to perform her music and advocate for body positivity,...

Kristin Chenoweth Joins NBC's Cheerleading Comedy Pilot
Image
NBC has a pilot for a new cheerleading comedy, Stumble, in the works, and Kristin Chenoweth has now been officially added to the main cast. Those without much Broadway knowledge would likely still recognize the actor from the screen, particularly after Kristin Chenoweth’s Wicked cameo, an acknowledgement of Chenoweth earning one of her three Tony nominations for originating the role of Glinda. She’s also appeared in BoJack Horseman, Pushing Daisies, Glee, The Descendants, and the Netflix romantic comedy Our Little Secret, along with far too many other stage and screen credits to mention.

But Kristin Chenoweth’s best onscreen performances may not all be behind her. As reported by Deadline, Chenoweth is now joining the cast of the cheerleading mockumentary series Stumble as a series regular. She’ll be playing the perky, 1989-obsessed Tammy Istiny (pronounced Iss-tih-knee), who takes over for former junior college competitive cheerleading coach Courteney...

Kristin Chenoweth Joins ‘Stumble’ NBC Comedy Pilot
Image
Exclusive: Tony and Emmy winner Kristin Chenoweth has joined the cast of Stumble, Jeff Astrof and Liz Astrof’s single-camera cheerleading comedy pilot for NBC. Set to recur should the pilot go to series, she joins series regulars Jenn Lyon, Taran Killam, Jarrett Austin Brown and Georgie Murphy, Ryan Pinkston, Anissa Borrego, Arianna Davis and Taylor Dunbar.

Written by the Astrof siblings, Stumble is a mockumentary about the ridiculously high stakes competitive world of junior college cheer. It centers on Courteney Potter (Jenn Lyon), a top junior college cheer coach who is pushed out over a controversial video and forced to take a job at a little know school.

Chenoweth will play Tammy Istiny. Her last name is pronounced “Isstinny,” but everyone thinks it’s “Is Tiny” (which does not sound farfetched given Chenoweth’s 4’11” frame.) Courteney’s longtime assistant coach, once a star flyer herself, Tammy lives and dresses in her heyday,...

Lizzo Hits Back Against Claims She Used Ozempic To Lose Weight
Image
Lizzo shot back at an Instagram user who asked if she had been taking the medication Ozempic to lose weight.

“‘oZeMpIc oR cOkE?’ – a fan,” Lizzo wrote in the caption of an Instagram carousel posted on Friday.

The rapper responded to this query in a video posted on the carousel.

window._taboola = window._taboola || []; _taboola.push({ mode: 'thumbnails-mid', container: 'taboola-mid-article-thumbnails', placement: 'Mid Article Thumbnails', target_type: 'mix' });

“When you finally get Ozempic allegations after five months of weight training and calorie deficit,” she wrote in the video in which she put her head on her hand and sighed.

She then lip-synced to the TikTok audio of Christoph Waltz‘s character in Django Unchained, saying, “It’s like a reward.”

The singer also posted a screenshot in the carousel, showing a follower known as @dufflebag_du commenting on one of her posts.

Megan Thee Stallion & Roc Nation Sued Over Unpaid Wages & Alleged Backseat Sex Action By ‘Mean Girls’ Actress & Another Woman
Image
Megan Thee Stallion’s former personal cameraman is taking the Grammy winner and Mean Girls actress and Roc Nation to court for creating an “intolerable” and “hostile abusive work environment.”

In a nine-claim complaint filed today in Los Angeles Superior Court, Emilio Garcia is accusing Megan Pete (Thee Stallion’s real name), her own company, her Hot Girl Touring and the Jay-Z founded entertainment platform of underpaying him, misclassifying him and causing “severe emotional distress and anxiety” due to overwork almost since the moment he started working for the “Plan” B singer in July 2018 (read the whole complaint here).

In particular, it seems an alleged explicit incident in the back of a moving car almost two years ago that proved the final straw – for all concerned:

On or around June 2022, Plaintiff was traveling on tour with Stallion in Ibiza, Spain. After a night out, Plaintiff, Stallion, and three other women...

Lizzo Loses Bid To Stop Assault, Sexual Harassment & Discrimination Suit From Tour Dancers
Lizzo at an event for Les 74e Primetime Emmy Awards (2022)
“Oh, I’ve been so down and under pressure,” Lizzo sings in her award-winning hit song “About Damn Time,” and the Watch Out for the Big Grrrls host might be feeling the poignancy of those lyrics more than ever right now.

A year after Lizzo won Record of the Year at the 65th annual Grammys for “About Damn Time,” the singer today finds herself facing a trial on sexual harassment, discrimination and other claims from a trio of her former tour dancers. The Marty Singer-represented Lizzo and fellow defendants Big Grrrl Big Touring Inc and dance team head Shirlene Quigley came up short in their attempt to have the explosive lawsuit filed in August gutted on free speech grounds.

“It is dangerous for the court to weigh in, ham-fisted, into constitutionally protected activity,” LA Superior Court Judge Mark Epstein wrote in a ruling made public today, rejecting a large...

Lizzo Moves To Shutter Racial & Sexual Harassment Suit; Slammed By Tour Wardrobe Designer’s Lawyer For Trying To “Shift Blame”
Image
When Asha Daniels filed her illegal retaliatory termination, racial and sexual harassment lawsuit against Lizzo and her touring team in September, the Grammy winning singer responded by bashing the action by her former tour wardrobe designer as “a bogus, absurd publicity-stunt.” Now, the “Truth Hurts” singer and her Big Grrl Big Touring, Inc. wants a state judge to toss the matter out.

Staking their December 15-filed demurrer in LA Superior Court on Daniels having no right to utilize California laws while working for a Delaware corporation in Europe, the document from Marty Singer’s firm rips “Plaintiff, a New York resident” for her “meritless and salacious action after less than three weeks of employment by Bgbt” (bold and italics theirs).

“During her brief employment by Bgbt, Plaintiff refused to comply with instructions from her supervisors and tour management, failed to perform the work that she was assigned and, eventually, just...

Lizzo Dancer Lawsuit: Lawyers Spar in Court
Image
The lawsuit alleging Lizzo harassed a trio of backup dancers had its first major court hearing Wednesday, with lawyers on both sides sparring over allegations the singer created a hostile work environment on tour.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Mark H. Epstein declined to issue an immediate ruling on Lizzo’s motion to spike the complaint due to her right to free speech, but his barrage of questions suggested he’ll uphold at least some of the nine causes of action filed in August. The judge spent considerable time...

Lizzo Accusers Fight Back on Singer’s Attempt to Throw Out Case
Image
Lizzo’s accusers are fighting back on her recent motion asking the court to throw out their lawsuit. Ahead of a hearing set for Nov. 22, lawyers for Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams, and Noelle Rodriguez filed an opposition filing, claiming that anti-slapp statutes do not protect Lizzo from facing legal repercussions for the assault and discrimination allegations in their suit.

“Can a global celebrity be forever insulated from civil liability because all their conduct is protected as free speech under the anti-slapp statute? Defendant Lizzo asks this Court to rule in exactly that fashion,...

Former Lizzo Dancers Argue Her Filing to Dismiss Suit Can’t Keep Singer ‘Insulated From Civil Liability’
Lizzo at an event for Les 74e Primetime Emmy Awards (2022)
In the face of legal accusations of assault, harassment and discrimination, Lizzo’s anti-slapp (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) filing to dismiss has been met with an opposition memo that counters what it describes as an attempt to protect the singer from consequences under the label of free speech.

The anti-slapp filing arrived on Oct. 27 in addition to denials by her representation, statements from other dancers and staffers testifying to her good character, as well as pushback from Lizzo herself. The singer asked the court to dismiss the harassment lawsuit for a variety of other reasons as well.

“Can a global celebrity be forever insulated from civil liability because all their conduct is protected as free speech under the anti-slapp statute?” lawyers for Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams and Noelle Rodriguez rhetorically ask in a new opposition filing to the Grammy winner’s attempt to have the matter tossed out of court.

Lizzo Accusers Say First Amendment Is No Reason To Throw Out Assault, Sexual Harassment & Discrimination Suit Against Grammy Winner

(Updated with Lizzo spokesperson statement) The legal battle over assault, harassment and discrimination claims between Lizzo and a trio of former tour dancers and reality show contestants has turned into a constitutional squabble, at least for now.

“Can a global celebrity be forever insulated from civil liability because all their conduct is protected as free speech under the anti-slapp statute?” rhetorically ask lawyers for Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams and Noelle Rodriguez in an opposition filing this week to the Grammy winner’s attempt to have the matter tossed out of court. “Defendant Lizzo asks this Court to rule in exactly that fashion. Fortunately for all victims of celebrity malfeasance, the law says otherwise.”

Lizzo Files to Dismiss Sexual Harassment Lawsuit: “Fabricated Sob Story”
Image
Lizzo has filed a motion to dismiss a sexual harassment lawsuit filed against her by three of her former dancers, calling the accusations a “fabricated sob story” created by “opportunists” seeking “a quick payday.”

The motion was written by Martin Singer, an attorney known for his ruthless defense of celebrities like Chris Brown, Bill Cosby, and Johnny Depp. “Plaintiffs embarked on a press tour, vilifying defendants and pushing their fabricated sob story in the courts and in the media. That ends today,” Singer wrote. “Instead of taking any accountability for their own actions, plaintiffs filed this lawsuit against defendants out of spite and in pursuit of media attention, public sympathy and a quick payday with minimal effort.”

Lizzo has already denied the allegations — which include sexual harassment, a toxic work environment, and racial and disability discrimination — arguing that plaintiffs Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams, and Noelle Rodriguez were fired due to...

Lizzo Asks Court to Dismiss Ex-Dancers’ Sexual Harassment Lawsuit as 18 Staffers Back Her

Lizzo is slamming her ex-dancers’ lawsuit — and asking the court to toss it. In a new motion filed Friday, the singer’s team described the allegations of fat-shaming and harassment from her former dancers as a “fabricated sob story” filed to get a “quick payday.”

In the motion, Lizzo’s team alleged that the ex-dancers who filed the suit had shown a “pattern of gross misconduct” while working with the singer.

“Plaintiffs missed flights, arrived late and hungover to rehearsals and drunk to performances, entered into consensual sexual relationships with male crew members on tour,...

Lizzo Asks Court To Dismiss ‘Ridiculous’ Harassment Lawsuits, Requests Jury Trial
Image
On Thursday, the ‘Special’ singer’s attorneys formally denied the claims filed by three of her former dancers last month.

Lizzo has formally denied the accusations against her and asked a judge to dismiss the sexual harassment lawsuit filed by three of her former dancers last month.

In court documents filed by the Grammy winner’s legal team on Thursday and obtained by Et, Lizzo — whose legal name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson — and her touring group are asking the courts to dismiss the case made against them by Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams and Noelle Rodriguez, saying the former dancers’ court filing “fails to state facts sufficient to constitute a cause of action against Defendants.”

The filed response claims the “plaintiffs are guilty of unclean hands,” which is a legal term meaning that they are not entitled to any damages because they allegedly acted in bad faith and/or unethically.

The docs go on to say,...

Lizzo Wants Dancers’ Assault, Sexual Harassment & Discrimination Suit Tossed Out Of Court
Image
“I’m about to get into my feelings,” Lizzo sings in her ‘About Damn Time’ tune from 2022.

This week, the Grammy winner and recent Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award recipient made her feelings very clear about a sexual harassment, assault, discrimination and fostering a “hostile work environment” lawsuit brought against her by former tour dancers and Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls contestants.

The Marty Singer represented Lizzo wants Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams and Noelle Rodriguez legal action from earlier this summer “dismissed in its entirety with prejudice.” In the otherwise pretty standard September 27 response filing, the Juice singer, real name Melissa Jefferson, denies “each and every allegation” against her and production company Big Grrrl touring company (read Lizzo’s legal response here).

Lizzo Accuser Opens Up About Singer’s ‘Sexualized, Racially Charged and Illegal Work Environment’ (Exclusive Video)
Asha Daniels
Fashion designer Asha Daniels is speaking out against Lizzo in her first network television interview with ABC News Studios’ “Impact x Nightline.”

Daniels, who designed the wardrobe for Lizzo’s dancers on her 2023 tour, filed a lawsuit against the singer earlier this month, accusing her of creating a “sexualized, racially charged and illegal work environment.”

“I’m coming into work with someone who has physically assaulted me, with someone who’s threatened me, someone who is not allowing me to go eat when I need to eat,” Daniels told ABC News’ Janai Norman in an exclusive clip shared with TheWrap from the show that will air Thursday.

The suit also alleges that Lizzo’s management team made “racist and fatphobic comments mocking Black women,” and that Daniels was denied worker medical care and forced to “endure degrading sexual harassment.”

“[Wardrobe manager Amanda Nomura] would regularly mock both Lizzo and the big girls and she...

Lizzo was one of the night’s guests of honour at the 2023 Black Music Action Coalition Gala on Thursday, where the “Truth Hurts” singer appeared to be in good spirits.

Lizzo’s appearance at the event came just hours after news broke that she is facing a new lawsuit — this time from her former wardrobe stylist, Asha Daniels.

At the star-studded gala event, held at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills on Thursday evening, Lizzo smiled bright as she chatted with other celebs in attendance and posed for photos inside the event.

The singer, who did not walk the carpet ahead of the gala, shined in an elegant black gown during the event — where she was also honoured with the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award.

Lizzo Hit with Additional Lawsuit Alleging Harassment, Discrimination, and Assault
Image
Lizzo has been hit with an additional lawsuit by a former employee, who’s accused the singer and her team of racial and sexual harassment, disability discrimination, illegal retaliatory termination, and assault.

The plaintiff, wardrobe designer Asra Daniels, filed Thursday (September 21st) in Los Angeles against Lizzo, her wardrobe manager Amanda Nomura, and her tour manager Carlina Gugliotta. Per Rolling Stone, the suit is largely aimed at Nomura, who’s been accused of making “racist and fatphobic comments” towards dancers and referring to “Black women on the tour as ‘dumb,’ ‘useless,’ and ‘fat.'” The suit also details an incident in which Nomura allegedly rolled a heavy clothing rack over Daniels’ foot before shoving her into it, causing injury.

“Nomura expressed that she would ‘kill a bitch if it came down to it’ if anyone threatened her job,” the lawsuit continues. “Lizzo’s management was well aware of this pattern of behavior.

Lizzo Faces New Lawsuit Alleging Racial & Sexual Harassment On Tour; “Absurd,” Singer’s Team Says
Image
Lizzo has been named in yet another lawsuit alleging the Grammy winner oversaw a “hostile, sexually and racially charged” work environment. The suit was brought by Asha Daniels, a wardrobe designer who worked on Lizzo’s 2023 tour.

The suit, filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court, was brought the same day that Lizzo is set to receive the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award from the Black Music Action Coalition. It names Melissa Jefferson, professionally known as Lizzo, her production company Big Grrrl Big Touring, Inc. (Bgbt), her wardrobe manager Amanda Nomura and her tour manager Carlina Gugliotta.

In the suit (read it here), Daniels alleges racial and sexual harassment, disability discrimination, illegal retaliatory termination and assault, among other things.

Lizzo spokesman Stefan Friedman released the following statement to Deadline in response to the latest lawsuit:

Lizzo’s Spokesman Responds As Singer Is Hit By Another Lawsuit From Former Tour Employee: ‘We Will Pay This As Much Attention As It Deserves. None’
Image
Lizzo’s spokesman fired back as the singer was hit with another lawsuit; this time from someone working in the tour wardrobe department.

In court docs obtained by Et on Thursday, Asha Daniels — who was hired by Amanda Nomura to join Lizzo’s 2023 tour — had filed legal docs stating she was made to work extremely long hours, forced to hear racist and fatphobic comments and more.

However, Lizzo’s spokesman, Stefan Friedman, insisted, “As Lizzo receives a Humanitarian Award tonight from the Black Music Action Coalition for the incredible charitable work she has done to lift up all people, an ambulance-chasing lawyer tries to sully this honour by recruiting someone to file a bogus, absurd publicity-stunt lawsuit who, wait for it, never actually met or even spoke with Lizzo.”

He added, “We will pay this as much attention as it deserves. None.”

Lizzo’s Ex-Dancers Slam Countersuit As ‘Insidious Attempt At Intimidation’
Image
In the wake of Lizzo reportedly preparing to file a countersuit against the former backup dancers suing her for sexual harassment, a lawyer for plaintiffs Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams and Noelle Rodriguez is firing back.

In a statement to Page Six, attorney Ron Zambrano — who represents the three women, blasted the singer’s countersuit.

“Lizzo’s threat to countersue for malicious prosecution is an insidious attempt at intimidation and delivers a chilling effect to all harassment victims in the workplace,” said Zambrano.

Lizzo Was Accused Of Stealing Another Artist’s Content After Their Contract Dispute On 'Watch Out for the Big Grrrls' Reality Competition
Image
Lizzo's reality show, Watch Out for the Big Grrrls, aimed to uplift and celebrate plus-size individuals, but it has been marred by a bullying lawsuit filed by former backup dancers. TikTok user Elle Baez accused Lizzo of stealing her content ideas for the show. Lizzo has remained silent on the content theft accusations.

Aside from her Grammy-winning music, Lizzo also made headlines with her Emmy-winning Amazon show, Watch Out for the Big Grrrls. Her reality show has been a powerful advocate for body positivity and a platform to provide plus-size women an opportunity to shine as background dancers. However, Lizzo's intention to uplift and celebrate plus-size individuals sparked some unexpected controversy.

In August 2023, Lizzo's former backup dancers, Arianna Davis, Noelle Rodriguez, and Crystal Williams, filed a bullying lawsuit against her, alleging that the singer had fostered a hostile work environment.

14 Dancers Reached Settlement With Lizzo Over Dispute Months Before New Lawsuit
Image
On Aug. 1, three of Lizzo's former dancers filed a lawsuit against the 35-year-old musician. In the suit, obtained by NBC News, plaintiffs Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams, and Noelle Rodriguez detailed the hostile work environment they allegedly endured during their time on tour, including weight shaming, verbal altercations, and forced participation in a sex show. They also claimed that the captain of Lizzo's dance team, Shirlene Quigley, frequently overshared personal details about her sex life and religious beliefs during rehearsals, identifying one of the plaintiffs as a "non-believer" and openly discussing the virginity of another in interviews and on social media.

On Aug. 23, the Los Angeles Times reported that Lizzo had reached a settlement with 14 dancers six months before news about the new lawsuit broke. In 2022, according to the outlet, 14 dancers alleged that behind-the-scenes footage of them was used without their consent in Lizzo's HBO Max documentary, "Love Lizzo." Alan Brunswick,...

Lizzo’s Team Slammed For “Victim Shaming” Over Ex-Dancers’ Lawsuit; Grammy Winner’s Lawyer Threatens “Malicious Prosecution” Action
Image
The verbal clash between Lizzo and a trio of dancers suing the Grammy winner for sexual harassment, fostering a “hostile work environment,” discrimination and more has seen the gloves come off — at least when it comes to the lawyers.

“Our clients aren’t afraid of Singer or his empty threats or his victim shaming,” Neama Rahmani, attorney for dancers Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams and Noelle Rodriguez, told Deadline on Wednesday after Lizzo’s lawyer Marty Singer said earlier in the day that her clients’ case is peppered with a “range of factual inaccuracies.”

“I’ve handled thousands of cases, including prosecuting drug cartels, so we have no plans to back down,” the Los Angeles-based Rahmani said. “Let’s see if Singer can actually try a case in a courtroom instead of the media.”

In the complaint against Lizzo, Big Grrrl Big Touring Inc and Lizzo’s dance team head Shirlene Quigley seeking unspecified damages,...

Image
Singer Lizzo has reportedly been removed as a contender for the Super Bowl Lviii Halftime Show amid her sexual harassment suit. The ‘About Damn Time’ star, 35, is being taken to court by three of her former backing dancers for alleged sexual harassment, creating a hostile work environment and discrimination, and an insider has now said her name has been ditched from a list of stars NFL bosses were considering for the February 2024 spectacle in Las Vegas, reports aceshowbiz.com.

“Talks of Lizzo being a part of the Halftime festivities, or performing the National Anthem, are dead now that she is surrounded by scandal,” a source told DailyMail.com.

The annual Super Bowl performances are produced by Jay-Z’s Roc Nation record label, and the 53-year-old rapper has cancelled his upcoming “Made in America” festival – which Lizzo was due to headline – after the singer was hit by her dancers’ allegations.

“I’ve only ever seen exemplary behaviour from her, especially when everyone was hating on me and she was on top of the world. There was no reason for her to check in, besides to be a good person. Just my two cents. I recall when she first blew up being so happy because I...

“Her Career is Not Done”: Despite Damaging Allegations, Some See a Path Forward for Lizzo
Image
When Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls reality show, championing body positivity and inclusivity, captured an Emmy last year, perhaps more notable than its upset win was the entertainer’s emotional acceptance speech.

Calling the trophy for outstanding competition series “nice” after beating out extremely popular TV programs like RuPaul’s Drag Race, The Voice, The Amazing Race and Top Chef, Lizzo said: “When I was a little girl, all I wanted to see was me in the media, someone fat like me, Black like me, beautiful like me.”

She closed her speech by pointing to her cast of plus-size female dancers of color, who cheered loudly from their seats. “One year ago these women were filming this television show that would change their lives forever. They are Emmy Award-winning superstars who are going on a world tour. Make some noise for my Big Grrrls. I love you guys so much.
