There have been several dozen films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, going strong and releasing multiple films almost every year since its beginning in 2008. The McU's overwhelming volume has inspired several conversations by pundits and critics, wherein they ponder the series as one of the longest-running in cinema history. It is, of course, by no means the longest. Indeed, a close study of cinema history will immediately reveal film franchises that handily outstrip it.

One might immediately think of Godzilla, for instance, a film series that has been chugging along pretty steadily since its debut in 1954. To date, there have been 38 feature films (in both Japan and America) in the "Godzilla" franchise. Some deep-cut kiddie-entertainment enthusiasts may be able to recall that there are already 43 animated movies to star Mattel's Barbie, and that's not even counting Greta Gerwig's live-action blockbuster. Those 43 movies were made between 2001 and the present.

A few months ago, rumors began circulating that Marvel Studios was developing a Midnight Sons project, reportedly connected to the upcoming Blade reboot. While the studio has yet to make an official announcement, a steady stream of updates has kept the project in the spotlight.

Previously, reports suggested that Logan writer Michael Green had been hired to pen the script. However, this was never officially confirmed by Marvel or other reliable sources.

Now industry insider Daniel Richtman reports that Michael Green is no longer a part of the project. Green is currently busy executively producing the ‘Blade Runner 2009’ series for Amazon Prime Video.

Hong Kong International Film Festival Society’s (Hkiff) Hong Kong – Asia Film Financing Forum (Haf) has unveiled a slate of 25 in-development projects for its 23rd edition, with renowned auteur Kore-eda Hirokazu among the heavyweight filmmakers backing emerging talent.

Among the highlights is “Yellow,” directed by newcomer Yamaura Miyoh and produced by Kore-eda. The film follows a man living in self-punishment after a fatal car accident who finds redemption through his relationship with his deceased friend’s young son.

The selection showcases several established filmmakers nurturing new voices. Sylvie Pialat and Nai An are backing Hu Wei’s “49 Days,” about a divorced Chinese couple reuniting in Paris to arrange their son’s funeral. Aditya Vikram Sengupta is producing Niladri Mukherjee’s debut “Republic of Mahalaxmi Apartment,” which examines India’s majority rule issues through the story of a single mother who becomes her housing estate’s public enemy after flagging a malfunctioning elevator.

Strange Academy is a newer Marvel Comics concept as the team didn't debut until 2020. Created by writer Scottie Young and artist Humberto Ramos, the series plays out in Doctor Strange's corner of the Marvel Universe.

It began with the Sorcerer Supreme establishing a school to train young sorcerers and magic users in the arts of the mystic arts. The school is located in New Orleans, with Doctor Voodoo, Zelma Stanton, Scarlet Witch, and Man-Thing among those who have served on the faculty.

The students, meanwhile, include mostly new characters, though some of them have ties to much bigger names. For example, there's Doyle Dormammu, the "son" of Dormammu, Enchantress' son, Alvi Brorson, and a Frost Giant called Guslaug.

Hong Kong’s Asia Film Financing Forum, the region’s leading movie project market, has unveiled the 25 titles selected for its upcoming 2025 edition. The program features films that are in development from some of Asia’s most accomplished directors and producers, including Kore-eda Hirokazu, Aditya Vikram Sengupta, Nai An, Stanley Kwan and Yeh Ju-Feng.

“Those shortlisted are remarkable for their cultural diversity. The 21st century has been wonderful for fans of Marvel live-action productions. Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, the Fox X-Men series, the MCU… you name it. Before that, the situation outside the comics was a mess. While DC was doing well, Marvel was struggling to get something decent going. In the ‘70s, a decision was made to focus on the small screen, so shows like The Incredible Hulk and The Amazing Spider-Man were made, but they weren't hits for the ages. The third production was even worse.

There were high hopes for Dr. Strange when it aired as a CBS movie on Sept. 6, 1978. The idea of the movie was conceived by writer, director, and producer Philip DeGuere, best known for his later work in Magnum P.I., Jag, and NCIS. According to Jessica Walter, who played the villain, Morgan Le Fay, DeGuere “wanted everything to be perfect.” Unfortunately, that didn’t happen.

Beef Season 2 incorporates yet another star. The announcement was made one day after Beef was confirmed to return exclusively to Netflix for a second season with a whole new cast. The latest addition to the beefy cast is none other than Youn Yuh-jung, the Academy Award-winning Korean actor known for films like Minari and the Apple TV+ series Pachinko.

A few years ago, Youn won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in 2020's Minari, the semi-autobiographical drama by Lee Isaac Chung. “Minari” Oscar winner Youn Yuh-jung has joined Season 2 of “Beef.”

Netflix officially announced on Wednesday that the series, from Lee Sung Jin and A24, would return for a second season with Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Charles Melton and Cailee Spaeny.

The logline for the eight-episode Season 2 goes as follows: “A young couple witnesses an alarming fight between their boss and his wife, triggering chess moves of favors and coercion in the elitist world of a country club and its Korean billionaire owner.”

Youn is best known for her Academy Award-winning performance in 2020’s “Minari,” in which she starred opposite “Beef” Season 1 star Steven Yeun. She became the first Korean to win an acting Oscar.
