Eric is a brand-new Netflix original, and it is all about the lives of the people in New York City during the 1980s. This is a period drama, and the general population of the era was all kinds of regressive. The show is set during a time when New York City authorities were planning for a massive redevelopment of the city in the hope of getting rid of the poverty and rampant homelessness. This was also a time when homophobia was at its peak, and men or women being gay was not openly accepted. Countless gay men were working regular jobs and living normal lives, but hiding behind the façade of being happy men. Some men were willing to be in denial about their sexuality, while others led dual lives of having a family but meeting male prostitutes from time to time.

It has been a while since Netflix dropped a good period show. This time it was all about life and times in New York during the 1980s, when the city was on the verge of massive redevelopment in the hope of uplifting the homeless. Around that time and before, the crime rate was high, and homophobia was widespread. The rampant corruption in government bodies and the police wreaked havoc in people’s lives. Abi Morgan, the creator of the Netflix original Eric, talks about everything mentioned above, along with the racist attitude towards the African American population in the city.

The new Netflix original series Eric tells a compelling story about a father’s realizations and determination against the backdrop of difficult social times in New York City in the 1980s. Set during a time when the spread of HIV/AIDS and homophobia were both on the rise, the six-episode series follows an egoistic puppeteer, Vincent, as he reacts to the sudden disappearance of his young son, Edgar. Vincent, portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch, is undoubtedly the highlight of the show, although McKinley Belcher III’s determined police detective, Michael Ledroit, is even more enjoyable. Eric successfully delivers a layered and emotional tale and makes for a rather inspiring watch.

Warning: Minor spoilers ahead for Eric on Netflix.
The puppet in Netflix's Eric is voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, who also plays Vincent in the gripping psychological drama. Eric is an extension of Vincent's mind, so it makes sense that the actor portrays the giant, furry puppet. Cumberbatch initially considered a more "startling" voice for Eric, but the creative team decided against this.
Netflix's Eric gets its name from a puppet who helps Vincent Anderson find his son, and viewers might be wondering who voices Benedict Cumberbatch's big, furry companion in the show. Although Eric is about the disappearance of nine-year-old Edgar Anderson, the series features puppets throughout its six-episode run. This is because Edgar's father works on Good Day Sunshine, a children's production that designs and utilizes puppets to entertain its audience. Vincent and Edgar bond over their shared interest in drawing and design, and Edgar shares his idea...

Eric on Netflix immerses viewers in a gritty, realistic drama inspired by 1980s missing-persons cases. Though not true stories, Edgar and Marlon's disappearances in Eric feel hauntingly similar to real events. Writer Abi Morgan captures the era's unsettling vibe in Eric, using other details of the decade to fully bring it to life.

What monsters hide in the darkest corners of our minds?
Eric, the emotional thriller from playwright and screenwriter Abi Morgan and director Lucy Forbes, and starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Vincent Anderson, explores the concept of both physical and psychological monsters. For Vincent, the successful, yet troubled creator of an ’80s children’s show Good Day Sunshine, the brooding monster lurking around every corner is both. He’s also big, blue and white, and goes by the name Eric.
But Vincent’s real life is far more frightening than the imaginary beast that haunts him. His 9-year-old son, Edgar (Ivan Howe), goes missing in the gritty streets of 1985 New York City — where structural inequity has led to an addiction epidemic...

Plot: Vincent, one of New York’s leading puppeteers and creator of the hugely popular children’s television show, ‘Good Day Sunshine,’ struggles to cope with the loss of his son, Edgar, becoming increasingly distressed and volatile. Full of self-loathing and guilt around Edgar’s disappearance, he clings to his son’s drawings of a blue monster puppet, Eric, convinced that if he can get Eric on TV then Edgar will come home. As Vincent’s progressively destructive behaviour alienates his family, his work colleagues, and the detectives trying to help him, it’s Eric, a delusion of necessity, who becomes his only ally in the pursuit to bring his son home.
Review: The idea behind Eric, as depicted in the trailer for the series, is a fascinating concept. A man driven to the edge of sanity after the disappearance of his son bonds with an imaginary monster created by his child to rescue him.

The new Netflix miniseries Eric asks one of the universal questions: What if Jim Henson was an emotionally abusive drunk, his son went missing in mid-Eighties New York City, the investigation involved crooked cops and a queer nightclub and an underground encampment for the unhoused, and Henson began hallucinating conversations with his newest Muppet as a way to cope with all of this?
You know, that old chestnut.
Technically, Benedict Cumberbatch is not playing Henson, but a fictional peer of the late, great puppet master: Vincent Anderson, creator and chief puppeteer of a beloved,...
