When most people in the anime community think about memorable anime that came out in the 2010s, plenty of examples come to mind. KonoSuba, No Game No Life, and Re:Zero were some of the best shows that made their debut within the past 10 years. However, this train of thought doesn't hold up for anime movies. Films like Dragon Ball Super: Broly or Your Name were popular during this time, but it's easy to overlook other hidden gems that were released in this era.
These underrated movies deserve much more love. At the time of their release, these were films that received critical acclaim from critics and fans alike. Unfortunately, these films haven't gotten the attention they deserved as time has gone on. These films will stand the test of time as modern classics for anyone who takes the time to watch them.

I’ve been a huge Makoto Shinkai fan for years. His films always offer beautiful visuals, incredible music, along with deeply emotional plots. When I first watched Your Name, I was completely blown away. It had everything: romance, mystery, time travel, and that incredible mix of fantasy and reality. So, when they released Weathering With You, I was pretty excited. I went in thinking I was going to get another masterpiece, but I walked away, kind of disappointed.
Hey, I’m not saying Weathering With You wasn’t good. It looked gorgeous, and the music (hats off to Radwimps) was incredible. But the plot? It had far too many loose ends, a rather weird ending that didn’t feel right, and it just didn’t quite work for me as Your Name did.
Why Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name just works
One of the greatest things about Your Name is...

Found family is at the core of 9-1-1.
Friendships very much fall into that category, especially on a show like 9-1-1, which has these characters depending on one another during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
When people think of the series, they may first think of some of the flashier action sequences that have been beautifully crafted over the years. Still, the characters, their journeys, and their relationships with one another are truly what makes this show so special.
(Disney/Christopher Willard)
The series is full of meaningful duos, and even with so many fun and established pairs, there is still so much untapped potential with some pairings.
We’d love to see Athena and Maddie spend some more time together off the clock, and they’ve barely scratched the surface of what Chimney and Eddie’s friendship could be.

A lot is happening on Rescue: Hi-Surf any given episode.
There are rescues, obviously, but we’re also seeing the personal journeys of the North Shore lifeguards as they battle rebellious teens, try to grow up, and encounter romantic challenges at every turn.
Hina and Kainalu began the series as rivals, but their short-lived rivalry gave way to a friendship and their roommate era, which is slowly ending just as their romantic journey should be ready to begin.
(Zach Dougan/Fox)
If you’ve been watching television long enough, you know the benefits and drawbacks of the will-they/won’t-they trope.
For many couples, the period in which they stay in the state of limbo about their romance can be some of the best material you’ll ever get.
The longing and the uncertainty make for captivating drama, as internal battles and often outside forces keep a couple apart.

Before you decide this article isn’t worth your time and you jump to the comments based on the title alone, I urge you to hear me out.
As someone who loves the supporting cast of Tracker immensely, I am not against Colter eventually having a partner. They don’t necessarily need to be involved in every case, but if the known lone wolf shed his status and had someone by his side more often than not, I’d welcome it.
But that person shouldn’t be Billie Matalon.
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)
When Billie was first introduced during Tracker Season 1 Episode 6, I loved the flirty banter between her and Colter and how they helped each other but also had to learn to trust each other again.
Their relationship did feel lived in (perhaps due to the star’s real-life marriage), and I was perfectly okay with her being someone who...

After feeling a little short-changed about excluding characters we’ve grown to love from The Righteous Gemstones Season 4 Episode 1, the follow-up made up for it in a big way.
The Righteous Gemstones Season 4 Episode 2 re-introduced everyone and kicked off the final arcs for the Gemstones in their orbit.
I’m going to be honest: I’ll miss every one of these characters because they bring this beautiful, chaotic energy into the narrative.
(Jake Giles Netter/HBO )
The series doesn’t take itself seriously — at all. It allows the characters to have a lot of fun, culminating in a show that is as close to perfect as we’re going to get.
We’ll start with Eli because his storyline was the most changed between seasons as he embraced retirement and headed off to the high seas in Florida on a boat that didn’t look befitting of someone of his status.

Just when you thought Tracker couldn’t get any creepier, they manage to outdo themselves!
Tracker Season 2 Episode 13 will see Colter back in the Big Apple as he searches for a woman who seemingly disappears into thin air from a boutique clothing store.
The disappearance leads Colter into murky waters, and we’ve got an exclusive sneak peek from the hour, which sees Colter in a room of dead bodies.
(CBS/Screenshot)
A lot of the cases Colter gets seem to be headed one way, but they almost always veer off to somewhere else entirely.
What may seem like an open and shut case will suddenly have Colter submerged in some underground or back-alley operation, which will quickly cause him to rethink his life choices.

Makoto Shinkai has his own style of interweaving his films, crafting subtle yet significant connections that please his fans. Although his films do not have a single, cohesive timeline like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they do provide interesting nods and references that imply an underlying interconnectedness. One of the most dramatic demonstrations of this is the presence of Your Name (Kimi no Na wa) characters in Weathering With You (Tenki no Ko).

The moment fans realized that Taki Tachibana and Mitsuha Miyamizu made cameo appearances in Weathering With You, watching the movie became a whole different experience. But what exactly do they do in the film? How does their presence fit into the timeline? And what does this tell us about the future of Shinkai’s films? Let’s explore these questions and more.

As Blue Box gears up toward the release of episode #7, the pair will have new moments that suggest Taiki indeed has more than a prayer and a genuine shot with Chinatsu, provided he doesn't chicken out.
Blue Box has differentiated itself well from other conventional romance anime thanks to a blend of shnen romance trappings such as a male protagonist and shojo sensibilities,...

Warning: Spoilers Ahead for Blue Box Chapter #170!
Kyo Kasahara has been Taiki Inomata's closest confidant since the start of Blue Box. His rational and level-headed persona often allows him to help his friends through their troubles throughout the series. However, despite his disappointments, Kyo's stoic attitude often keeps him from taking action, even if it means depriving himself of happiness in his youth. With the latest chapter of Blue Box being Kyo's most honest expression of heartbreak over missing his chance with Ayame Moriya, Kyo's maturity for his age shows its painful consequences.
Of Taiki's friends in Blue Box, Kyo is often thoughtful yet reserved, keeping Taiki's head in the game on and off the badminton court. If Kyo had not intervened, Chinatsu wouldn't have asked Taiki to go to the aquarium in Blue Box episode #5. But Kyo properly understands the feeling of finally moving on from Saki Kanaishi,...

Comparing two expert auteurs like Hayao Miyazaki and Makoto Shinkai, who have mastered their unique and distinctive directorial styles, is unfair. And, similarly expecting Shinkai to be the next Miyazaki is slightly disrespectful. He has created his own presence in the industry, and such comparisons diminish their individual strengths into a petty competition.

Shinkai himself has admitted in the past that he doesn’t want to be the next Miyazaki, as he believes the legendary director is in a league of his own. However, he has already surpassed the Ghibli director in one respect that is truly admirable. Not just Miyazaki, Shinkai has surpassed more than half of the Japanese animation industry with his considerate work ethic.

This hour of Rescue: Hi-Surf was less about the rescues and more about the personal drama, which made for an uneven affair.
The first season is more than a third over, and there’s still so much we don’t know about these characters. Scaling back the action (it was still there but not at the forefront) in favor of character development wasn’t a bad idea, but it’s not one that necessarily worked, either.
Rescue: Hi-Surf Season 1 Episode 7 may have shaded in some of the characters more, but it also reminded you how desperately this series needs the rescues to make everything come together.
(Zach Dougan/Fox)
There’s a reason Rescue: Hi-Surf Season 1 Episode 5 was one of the best of the season: the action was intense and the kind of thing you don’t typically see on broadcast television.

After taking a week off, Will, Em, and the others are back for more daring rescues. Let’s take a look at what Rescue: Hi-Surf season 1, episode 7 is set to bring.
There is still a lot going on personally for the characters, especially when it comes to Sonny. The captain is struggling with the loss of Zion, and Em had to call him out on the way he’s handling it. Well, it looks like Sonny is finally taking things seriously.
In the promo for the new episode, Sonny asks Em if she’s ready to become captain. We know that Em makes a great lieutenant, but when she told Sonny to step down if he wasn’t going to step up, she didn’t really mean for her to take over his spot, did she? Wasn’t that just said out of frustration to get him to step up?...

After a brief hiatus, Rescue Hi-Surf Season 1 Episode 7 looks like a busy hour full of rescues (duh!) and Lots of personal drama.
So, it’s a typical hour for the newest Fox hit!
TV Fanatic scored a sneak peek of the newest hour, which sees Em race to the beach when a newly married couple gets swept away by the tide.
(Zach Dougan/Fox)
If you thought maybe the couple were taking a nice little dive into the water, bathing suits and all, you would be incorrect.
When Em arrives on the scene, she sees the couple wearing clothes, which is perfectly fine but a little peculiar since they’re pretty far out in the water.
She will definitely need assistance from Will and Laka to help sort this rescue out!
After Rescue: Hi-Surf Season 1 Episode 6, we’ll have to see if Sonny has returned to work after taking a mini-sabbatical amid Rocky’s death.

Makoto Shinkai is the proud creator of movies like Your Name, Suzume, Weathering With You, and many more. He is considered one of Japan’s most commercially successful filmmakers, with some of the highest-grossing movies in his pocket.
While each of his projects deals with different themes, one genre is common between them: romance. Shinaki is sure to include romance in his films, and it’s what makes them unique. In an interview, the filmmaker and novelist expanded even more on his ideology.

Sonny’s been towing a dangerous line for a while now, and things came to a head during Rescue Hi-Surf Season 1 Episode 6.

And it’s curious that Em is the only one who can see it.

Rocky’s death was a significant blow to the community, a community he was strongly invested in. He had a lot of ties, and his paddle out was a solemn affair with people remembering the life of the beloved man.
Sonny took the loss especially hard. He looked at the Rocky memorial and immediately remembered Zion and his passing.

Power struggles. Grief. Intense rescues. Old feelings. Kainalu making a mistake.
If this is what Rescue Hi-Surf has to offer every week, I will be seated.
As part of the two-night premiere, this second hour flows nicely from the first, continuing to introduce the characters and their dynamics and setting up many future storylines as the series finds its footing.

Spotlighting the rescues may seem like a given for an action drama about lifeguarding, but a show like this could have easily leaned more toward drama and less toward action. That’s not the case thus far.
Focusing this hour mainly on rescuing a young girl stranded at sea after a hike gone wrong was an excellent showcase for the action and character dynamics, especially between Sonny and Em and Em and Will.

Fox dives into the dramatic depths of the lifeguard tower with their new hour-long drama, “Rescue: Hi-Surf.” From executive producer and director John Wells and executive producer Matt Kester, the series heads to Hawaii, where it follows the personal and professional lives of the heavy-water lifeguards patrolling the famously dangerous coastline of the North Shore of O’ahu.

“Back in the day if u did a tv show called surf dracula you’d see that fool surfing every week in new adventures,” a famous viral tweet posits. “But in the streaming era the entire 1st season gotta be a long ass flashback to how he got the surfboard until you finally get to see him surf for 5 min in the finale.”
“Surf Dracula” comes to mind while watching “Rescue Hi-Surf,” not just because of the subject matter, but because there’s a surf rescue in the first five minutes of Fox’s Hawaii-set action series. “Rescue Hi-Surf” is an old school broadcast drama that values efficiency and immediacy in its storytelling. It delivers what its title promises before the pilot’s opening credits roll.

Never let it be said that Fox’s Rescue Hi-Surf doesn’t try to deliver what’s expected of it. The action drama regularly metes out dangerous rescues of the lifeguarding variety, plunging deep into the Pacific or zipping around on a succession of jet skis. When its hard-bodied heroes aren’t saving each other’s necks or bickering over office politics, they’re dutifully making eyes at one another.
The series functions simultaneously as a safety warning (the currents around Oahu’s North Shore can be intense, apparently!) and a tourism ad (… but don’t they still look so pretty and fun to splash around in?). Most of all, it aims to execute on the dependable formula of life-and-death stakes plus interpersonal intrigue plus attractive stars. There’s only one problem: It’s just … not that fun.
As diligently as creator Matt Kester checks off all these narrative boxes,...
