When most people in the anime community think about memorable anime that came out in the 2010s, plenty of examples come to mind. KonoSuba, No Game No Life, and Re:Zero were some of the best shows that made their debut within the past 10 years. However, this train of thought doesn't hold up for anime movies. Films like Dragon Ball Super: Broly or Your Name were popular during this time, but it's easy to overlook other hidden gems that were released in this era.

These underrated movies deserve much more love. At the time of their release, these were films that received critical acclaim from critics and fans alike. Unfortunately, these films haven't gotten the attention they deserved as time has gone on. These films will stand the test of time as modern classics for anyone who takes the time to watch them.

I’ve been a huge Makoto Shinkai fan for years. His films always offer beautiful visuals, incredible music, along with deeply emotional plots. When I first watched Your Name, I was completely blown away. It had everything: romance, mystery, time travel, and that incredible mix of fantasy and reality. So, when they released Weathering With You, I was pretty excited. I went in thinking I was going to get another masterpiece, but I walked away, kind of disappointed.

Hey, I’m not saying Weathering With You wasn’t good. It looked gorgeous, and the music (hats off to Radwimps) was incredible. But the plot? It had far too many loose ends, a rather weird ending that didn’t feel right, and it just didn’t quite work for me as Your Name did.

Friendships very much fall into that category, especially on a show like 9-1-1, which has these characters depending on one another during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

When people think of the series, they may first think of some of the flashier action sequences that have been beautifully crafted over the years. Still, the characters, their journeys, and their relationships with one another are truly what makes this show so special.

The series is full of meaningful duos, and even with so many fun and established pairs, there is still so much untapped potential with some pairings.

We’d love to see Athena and Maddie spend some more time together off the clock, and they’ve barely scratched the surface of what Chimney and Eddie’s friendship could be.

There are rescues, obviously, but we’re also seeing the personal journeys of the North Shore lifeguards as they battle rebellious teens, try to grow up, and encounter romantic challenges at every turn.

Hina and Kainalu began the series as rivals, but their short-lived rivalry gave way to a friendship and their roommate era, which is slowly ending just as their romantic journey should be ready to begin.

Comparing two expert auteurs like Hayao Miyazaki and Makoto Shinkai, who have mastered their unique and distinctive directorial styles, is unfair. And, similarly expecting Shinkai to be the next Miyazaki is slightly disrespectful. He has created his own presence in the industry, and such comparisons diminish their individual strengths into a petty competition.

Spotlighting the rescues may seem like a given for an action drama about lifeguarding, but a show like this could have easily leaned more toward drama and less toward action. That’s not the case thus far.

Focusing this hour mainly on rescuing a young girl stranded at sea after a hike gone wrong was an excellent showcase for the action and character dynamics, especially between Sonny and Em and Em and Will.

Never let it be said that Fox’s Rescue Hi-Surf doesn’t try to deliver what’s expected of it.
