Rashida Jones' Canceled Apple TV+ Show Could Have Been A Sci-Fi Classic
Image
Rashida Jones is one of those actors who turn up just about everywhere. She played Louisa Fenn on the Fox high school faculty drama "Boston Public," she was lawyer Marylin Delpy in David Fincher's "The Social Network", and her character Ann Perkins was an important part of the NBC hit sitcom "Parks and Recreation." She's also been known to work on sci-fi projects as of late, appearing in the "Black Mirror" season 7 opener ("Common People") as Amanda and playing the decoy protagonist Allison Becker in "Silo," one of the best sci-fi shows on Apple TV+.

As it happens, however, these aren't Jones' only recent science-fiction endeavors. In 2024, she starred in another Apple TV+ show -- one that could have become a stone cold classic if it wasn't for the fact that it was canceled after just one season. Said series was "Sunny," a dark comedy which pairs Jones' Suzie...

'Flight Risk' Star Discusses Mel Gibson's On-Set Direction
Image
It's not often that you see an action movie which could also work as a stage play; the two mediums seem downright antithetical. Mel Gibson (with a script from Jared Rosenberg) was up to the challenge, though. His new film, a return to the director's chair after nearly a decade, is Flight Risk, which is almost entirely set inside a small Cessna Grand Caravan plane during its Alaskan flight. While we hear some voices, there are only three actors on-screen throughout nearly the whole film — Topher Grace, Mark Wahlberg, and Michelle Dockery.

Dockery plays a U.S. Marshal transporting an arrested fugitive, and her pilot is played by Mark Wahlberg. Dockery spoke with MovieWeb about the tight filming space and Gibson's direction. "It feeling like a play was the way it read for me, actually, when I first read the script. It was quite unique to anything I'd ever read before for screen,...

10 Romance Anime with Incredibly High Stakes
Image
Romance is a huge anime genre. While fluffy and cozy romance will always have its place, there are plenty of romance anime with high stakes where far worse can happen beyond a broken heart. Sometimes the stakes have everything to do with the romance, and sometimes it means something as catastrophic as the end of the world.

In a high fantasy romance, a princess may need to team up with her devoted bodyguard to restore her kingdom from a despot. Other fantasy anime stories revolve around fated lovers who lose their lives and find each other over and over. Even contemporary romance couples have a lot to lose should they fail in their goals.

10 Best Anime like Snow White with the Red Hair
Image
Snow White with the Red Hair is a fantasy romance anime based on the manga by Sorata Akiduki. In it, a herbalist named Shirayuki flees her home when Prince Raj tries to make her his concubine. Along the way, she meets Prince Zen from the foreign kingdom of Clarines. The two quickly bond and, eventually, Shirayuki trains to become a court herbalist for Zen's kingdom. Thus begins their romantic journey together.

The anime is a well-loved shojo classic, leading many to seek stories like it. Fans appreciate a hard-working woman who isn't afraid to work to get what she wants. They find that kind of character admirable. However, no new content for the anime has aired since 2016. While fans may keep up with the manga, it never hurts to find new series to enjoy.

Apple TV+ Canceling One Of 2024's Most Underrated Sci-Fi Shows Is Extremely Disappointing After Season 1's Massive Cliffhanger
Image
The Apple TV+ sci-fi comedy series Sunny has been canceled after just one season, leaving viewers with a cliffhanger ending and concerns for the future of other streaming sci-fi shows. The ending of Sunny season 1 left several plot points open to exploration in season 2, including a shocking main character betrayal. As Apple TV+ has confirmed that viewers will not get a Sunny season 2, this continues a worrying trend for streaming channels. Sunny might be the latest canceled TV show that ended on a cliffhanger, but it is far from the first, with sci-fi shows often being affected.

FX on Hulu canceled Kindred after just one season, Prime Video's The Peripheral offered viewers hope when it was renewed for a second season before it, too, was canceled. It appears that The Oa's multidimensional cliffhanger ending will never be resolved after six years, and huge franchises are not immune to cancelation,...

Oscar-Nominated Abortion Short ‘Red, White and Blue’ Sets Nationwide Celebrity Screenings Ahead of Election
Image
“Red, White and Blue” – an Academy Award nominated short film dealing with emergency access to abortions — will roll out a series of celebrity-hosted screenings across the country to raise the issue before November’s presidential election.

Directed by Nazrin Choudhury and starring Brittany Snow, the project has been praised as “a film for right now, and we need it to be seen urgently by as many people as possible,” according to Jane Fonda, who sits on the host committee of a forthcoming screening. The rollout is spearheaded by Level Forward, and benefits numerous reproductive rights organizations.

Snow plays a single mom working as a waitress in Arkansas, one who urgently seeks an abortion but must flee across state lines. Traveling to Illinois with her preteen daughter, Snow’s character shows us that the procedure’s purpose and emotional fallout are far from what they seem. Choudhury wrote the script in...

Rashida Jones on a Second Season of ‘Sunny’: “There’s Things You’re Going to Want to Know”
Image
[The story contains mild spoilers from the season finale of Sunny.]

In less than five years of its existence, Apple TV+ has carved a niche out for itself as a home to evocative, well-made and interesting science fiction, and the streamer has delivered once more with Sunny, the dark Japan-set retrofuturist comedy that wrapped its first season this week.

Starring Rashida Jones, Sunny tells the story of Suzie Sakamoto, a taciturn American woman living in Kyoto, whose life is upended by tragedy after her husband Masahiko (Hidetoshi Nishijima) and son Zen (Fares Belkheir) disappear in a mysterious plane crash. Poleaxed by grief, Masahiko’s company sends Suzie a domestic robot named Sunny, with artificial intelligence attuned to her particular needs and feelings. As Suzie, reluctantly, begins to bond with Sunny, and eccentric new friend Mixxy (annie the clumsy), the great enigma surrounding the plane crash begins to unravel involving the yakuza and domestic Japanese politics.

As well as tackling weighty themes of grief,...

‘Sunny’ Star Hidetoshi Nishijima on Working With Rashida Jones and the Future of His Mysterious Character
Image
Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers for the entire first season of “Sunny,” now streaming on Apple TV+.

As a Japanese actor, Hidetoshi Nishijima often receives offers to play morally gray characters, such as samurais and yakuza members, who are defined by a particular profession and era. But then he was approached for the role of a roboticist whose mysterious disappearance leaves his wife (and the clever robotic companion he designed for her) at the center of a criminal conspiracy in “Sunny,” Apple TV+’s darkly comedic, sci-fi thriller that just wrapped up its first season. Nishijima — who starred in “Drive My Car,” the 2021 Japanese film that was nominated for best picture, and won the Academy Award for international feature — relished the opportunity to play an ordinary man who must wrestle with existential questions about what it means to be human.

“Of course, his profession is a big part of this project,...

Yes, we definitely need Sunny season 2 on Apple TV+ (And here's why)
Image
The finale of Sunny on Apple TV+ is now streaming, and it certainly delivered! I think it was a great finale and there were many plot points resolved that was exciting as a viewer who's been following this story along for the last 10 episodes. The natural question on our minds now is whether the series has been renewed.

At the time of this writing, Apple TV+ has not renewed or canceled Sunny starring Rashida Jones. This is nothing to worry about just yet though. While some shows get early renewals before a finale is even out, most of the time it takes at least a few weeks, if not months, to get a renewal.

I really hope that Sunny season 2 does happen because I think it's needed. And here's why! Spoilers Below.

Sunny Season 1 Episode 10 Review: The Dark Manual
Image
If you’re like me, you’re probably asking yourself if you’ve lost every bit of your sanity or just watched Sunny Season 1 Episode 10.

That was an exciting ending, to say the least, and the least was what was said since there are still unanswered questions!

Listen, don’t get me wrong. Sunny is a fantastic series with phenomenal acting and brilliant storytelling.

(Courtesy of Apple TV+)

Still, I am just like every other viewer in that I need resolution!

Two questions could’ve been answered easily and briefly, but I guess that was just too hard for the writers.

Is Masa alive? What was his relationship with Hime? That’s it! That’s all I needed to know!

All in all, Sunny was a crazy, wild ride that I would happily go on over and over again.

Apple TV+’s Sunny is one of the best shows on the platform. In fact, it’s one of the best shows out there right now, and it’s sad to see there isn’t much buzz about it. There, she meets a man named Masa, who makes her realize that the hermit life isn’t exactly what she needs. Instead, they end up getting married and living together in Japan for 10 years, until one day Masa and their young son Zen end up missing after a plane crash. The show is a detailed and intricately woven story that brings in mystery and dark satire about AI, which is sure to be the next big thing in the industry. The show being set in Japan adds an extra flair to it, and the...

While the endless inquiries have been aggravating, they have also been one of the series’ biggest draws.

Many science fiction shows will worry about losing audiences if they don’t spoon-feed viewers exposition. That’s certainly not the case with Sunny.

(Courtesy of Apple TV+)

The show wisely utilized so many secrets because now that we are approaching the end, all of the other shoes can drop.

It’s been a wild, wacky adventure, but this ride is ending. Sunny is finally answering some big questions as a parting gift.

And they are doing it with all the camp and comedy that an A24 series can deliver.

Sunny Season 1 Episode 9 Exclusive Sneak Peek: Hunger And Loneliness Are One And The Same
Image
We wanted answers, and the creative team behind Sunny has finally found a way to give them to us. And they’re doing it in the most acid-tripping way possible.

Secrets and mysteries have been the series’ cornerstone since its first episode.

Luckily, Sunny is one of those shows where the journey is more fun than the destination.

(Courtesy of Apple TV+)

However, the show wants to make sure the arrival is just as reality-bending as the trek has been.

For the entirety of Sunny Season 1, there has been question after question, with more introduced in every episode.

Zoe Saldaña’s Whirlwind Romance With a Guardians of the Galaxy Co-Star That Led to Awkward Breakup Happened Way Before She Joined the MCU
Image
Zoe Saldana, in recent years, has graduated to become one of the biggest female stars in Hollywood. From Star Trek, to James Cameron’s Avatar, to her work in the MCU, Saldana has undoubtedly dipped her toe in some of the biggest franchises, which means that fans are bound to track each and every move of the actress.

Bradley Cooper played the role of Leonard Bernstein in Maestro. | Netflix

That, obviously, perhaps unfortunately, also includes her relationship status and history. And while the 46-year-old is now happily married to Marco Perego Saldana, there was a time when she had been linked to a fellow MCU star, with whom she has also worked in a 2012 film.

That is none other than Bradley Cooper, who played the epic role of the Raccoon, Rocket, in Guardians of the Galaxy.

‘Sunny’ Episode 7 Recap And Ending Explained: What Happened To Sunny At Hime’s?
Image
I’ve got to say, more than as a sci-fi thriller, I watch Sunny, for the fashion and architecture, because wow, is the Japanese setting so chromatically stimulating! Sunny follows Suzie, an American woman who’s been living in Japan for a decade. Suzie is married to Masa, a simple Japanese man who apparently works in refrigeration, and they have a kid together named Zen. Unfortunately, one day Zen and Masa go missing after their flight ends up crashing. This crash leads to Suzie discovering many dark family secrets about Masa, but moreover, it almost seems like Suzie knows nothing about the man she’s been married to for the last 10 years. Now, this all seems quite ordinary, but the big twist is that Masa may be involved with the Yakuza. Or rather, he may be the son of a Yakuza member (whoop). In episode 6, Mixxy finds Sunny at the...

‘Sunny’ Episode 6 Recap And Ending Explained: Does Suzie Find Sunny?
Image
I suppose what’s fun about A24 and AppleTV+’s Sunny is that it parallels the story of Sunny with that of her creator. Let me explain. See, the first 5 episodes of the show were spent looking for Masa and Zen. However, by the end of the 5th episode, Suzie accepts the death of her husband and child, but now, her entire world is consumed by the homebot Sunny. Ironically, this is when Sunny disappears too. I guess now all Suzie can do is spend her time looking for the homebot she so hated at first. The show begs the question: did Suzie truly know Masa, or was she simply looking for a companion so she’d never have to go back to her old life? Now, we don’t know what that life looked like, but what we do know is that Suzie was desperately in love with Masa.

‘Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie’ Review: SpongeBob’s Latest Is a Chipmunk off the Old Blockhead
Image
A typical episode of “SpongeBob SquarePants” runs 11 minutes. Now, for those who can’t get enough of that Laffy Taffy-yellow fellow with the googly eyes and giggly laugh, a feature-length outing must already sound like 10 times the fun. Toss in the hook that a mad scientist wants to clone all the sea creatures from his corner of the ocean, and you’ve potentially got more SpongeBob than even the most insatiable sponge-head can handle.

Dropping exclusively on Netflix, “Saving Bikini Bottom: A Sandy Cheeks Movie” shifts the focus ever so slightly away from our porous … er, eponymous hero. You know, that absurdist slab of absorbent optimism (voiced by Tom Kenny) who lent his name to the show for the past quarter century: SpongeBob SquarePants (who just crossed the 300-episode mark). For the uninitiated, Sandy Cheeks is the name of SpongeBob’s Stem-luvin’ squirrel friend, not a reference to the level...

‘Sunny’ Episode 5 Recap & Ending Explained: Who Is Joey Sakamoto?
Image
Episode 5 of Sunny is definitely my favorite so far. The episode, which is focused on motherhood and the unmatchable instinct of a mother to protect her child, is both heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. While the episode is intense as we go further into the world of the yakuza and what Masa might be involved in, it also helps us feel empathetic towards “Sunny,” the robot. Is it Dr. Frankenstein or the creature that is the problem? Can Sunny overcome Masa’s shortcomings and actually help Suzie? Does Suzie actually have an attachment to Sunny? Where does Mixxy fall on this chessboard? Episode 5 certainly has my cogs turning, and I can’t wait to see what comes next. Let’s dive straight into all the important events of episode 5.

Zen Pace’s Poetic Experimental Short ‘Little Mirror’ Is a Therapeutic Love Letter to the Inner Child
Image
The hazy visual beauty of Zen Pace’s experimental short Little Mirror hit me in its very first frames but its questions of one’s inner child are what has stuck with me in the weeks following that initial viewing. Pace’s short is a piece of live action, experimental, essay-style filmmaking featuring the artist Cavier Coleman as he wrestles with both his childhood and his inner child, who is physically presented in the film by actor Micah Pedley. It’s an exploration that comes through in both Coleman’s internal, meditative performance but also through Dn fave Ewurakua Dawson-Amoah’s beautifully articulated introspective narration which overlays the piece. With the film now online for all to see, Dn caught up with Pace to ask them about the film’s beginnings as a project, collaborating with Dawson-Amoah on the narrated poetry, and the intricate structuring of the short’s emotional through-line.

‘Sunny’ Episode 4 Recap & Ending Explained: What Does Suzie Discover About Masa?
Image
While each episode of Sunny is short and sweet, it’s certainly not simple. There’s a lot that goes into the 30-minute episodes, and sometimes they go straight over our heads. The show follows an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan, named Suzie. Suzie suddenly learns that her husband Masa and her son Zen have been in a plane crash and may not return home, but as soon as she learns of this terrible news, deep, dark familial secrets about Masa’s family start to unravel. From episodes 1-3, we learn that Masa was even hiding the fact that he worked in robotics from Suzie, and she despised them. Suzie also learns that Masa might be the owner of a robot sex ring. Episode 4 begins with a flashback of Masa driving Zen to school, and when they get there, he sends Zen off with a smile on his face.

‘Sunny’ Episode 3 Recap & Ending Explained: What’s The Mystery Around Fake Finger?
Image
Episode 3 of Sunny is quite an odd episode. It’s got some new revelations about Masa, but it’s also got some stuff about this futuristic Japan that goes right over your head. I’m still trying to wrap my head around a prosthetic finger. I suppose it’s like a luxury accessory, or maybe just a trendy item for those who’ve had a finger chopped off. Gangsters are all the rage, no? Jokes aside, this episode is about a certain memory that Suzie has of her husband and child, but it’s also about a new discovery that Suzie and Mixxy end up making together. Episode 3 begins with a grieving Suzie, who’s a changed person, but not for the reasons you’d think. It seems Sunny has basically taken over chores within days of entering Suzie’s life, completely changing her perception of homebots. Suzie’s grieving...

Sunny Review: A Dreamlike Vision Falls Short
Image
Suzie Sakamoto is struggling with loss. The American expatriate has called Kyoto home for over a decade, but after the mysterious deaths of her husband Masa and young son Zen in an apparent plane crash, she finds herself adrift.

Looking for answers, and with little left to ground her, Suzie turns to an unexpected source: Sunny, an advanced home robot gifted to her by Masa’s colleague from his work in robotics. As Suzie grows closer to Sunny, she discovers her late husband kept far more secrets than she ever realized.

This is the premise of the Apple TV+ series Sunny, created by Katie Robbins. The 10-episode, one-hour drama explores mystery and grief through the lens of robotics and modern Japan. Rashida Jones stars as Suzie, alongside Hidetoshi Nishijima as Masa in flashbacks. As Suzie investigates with Sunny’s aid, her understanding of her husband and life in Kyoto is turned upside down,...

Roush Review: Not a ‘Sunny’ Outlook for a Grieving Woman & Her Robot in a Near-Future Mystery
Image
A woman’s best friend is her robot? That’s the pitch being sold by the ImaTech Corporation in the futuristic Sunny from Apple TV+. Just try convincing Suzie (Parks and Recreation‘s Rashida Jones), an American expat in Japan, who thinks A.I. “homebot” companions are creepy—and she’s not wrong. We first encounter Suzie in a daze of devastated grief after losing her husband Masa, an ImaTech employee and covert robotics employee, and young son Zen in a plane crash where they’re presumed dead. Suzie is less than thrilled when she’s gifted a perky new model named Sunny (voiced by Joanna Sotomura) as a consolation offering. Sunny, presented in English and heavily subtitled Japanese, begins as an offbeat, tragedy-laced buddy comedy—“I was programmed for you,” the bot pleads with her big eyes ...

“We already saw Con Air 30 years ago”: Mark Wahlberg’s Next Movie With Mel Gibson Has Left Fans Excited But the Plot is Eerily Similar to an Iconic Nicolas Cage Starrer
Image
After Daddy’s Home 2 and Father Stu, Mark Wahlberg is once again joining hands with Mel Gibson for Flight Risk which will hit theatres later this year. Clearly, Mel Gibson is completely focused on rebuilding his name in the industry after being in the dead center of many controversies in the late 2000s.

Father Stu (2022) | Columbia Pictures

While he has starred alongside Mark Wahlberg in the last couple of films, Flight Risk will have him sitting behind the camera lens and on the director’s chair. The upcoming film’s storyline sure seems promising; however, it looks like they have taken a page out of the script of Nicolas Cage’s iconic 1997 action thriller, Con Air.

GotG 3: Phyla-Vell Actor Reunites With James Gunn on Superman Set
Image
While a DC/Marvel crossover movie might not be made into a reality, Superman writer-director and DC Studios co-head James Gunn got a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 visitor on the set of the Man of Steel's newest cinematic outing. Said visitor was Phyla-Vell actor Kai Zen, who Gunn took a picture with.

Shared onto Instagram, the photo sees Gunn and Zen standing side-by-side and grinning at the camera. "Yesterday our favorite Guardian of the Galaxy (sorry [Chris Pratt]), [Phyla-Vell] herself [Kai Zen], visited the Superman set and stayed all day!" the filmmaker stated in the upload's description. This isn't the first time Gunn had people from Marvel Studios visit a DC project he was working on, as Marvel Studios executives Kevin Feige and Louis D'Esposito visited Gunn on The Suicide Squad's set.

10 Awesome Action Movie Characters With Disabilities
Image
Representation of disabilities in action movies raises awareness and can dispel misinformation. Characters with disabilities in action movies should be portrayed with good writing, avoiding clichés or exaggerated abilities. Several action movie heroes with disabilities, such as Ed Elrich and Daredevil, inspire audiences with their bravery and resilience.

Action movies have featured some awesome characters with disabilities throughout the years who are often overlooked by audiences and misunderstood by writers. As a result, many of the heroes with disabilities either receive minimized depictions in the form of weak writing, or excessively exaggerated depictions in the form of one's disability granting the character superpowers. While it's admirable that the entertainment industry is making greater strides to be more inclusive, clumsy writing can often be more harmful than good. With representation in Hollywood improving, it is still necessary for the industry to be mindful of how it portrays different groups.

Film Review: A Touch of Zen (1971) by King Hu
Image
Hailed as one of the biggest epics of the wuxia genre, “A Touch of Zen” is a true masterpiece of the category that stands apart particularly due to its technical prowess and high symbolism. The script is based on a short story titled “The Magnanimous Girl” by Pu Songling that was published in 1679.

A Touch of Zen is screening at Five Flavours

Gu is a talented painter and scholar who still lives with his mother, who worries about him being unambitious, unmarried and his decline to apply for a civil servant position. Eventually, a young girl named Yang and her mother settle in an abandoned house nearby, which everybody considers haunted. Gu's mother however, does not seem at all bothered by the fact and she proceeds in an effort to arrange a marriage between Gu and Yang. The girl declines but she and Gu strike a peculiar friendship, after she...
