The 15 Best Holiday-Centric Horror Movies to Watch If You Like Eli Roth's Thanksgiving
Image
Horror movies are the perfect films to watch during Halloween, making it the holiday of choice for many of them. Eli Roth's slasher movie Thanksgiving brought a heaping helping of horror on another day of the year. While it's certainly a change of pace, it's not the only explicitly holiday-themed scary movie.

Christmas is another popular time to spread holiday fear, with some movies decking the halls with bowels of victims. Conversely, one fearsome movie explores the concept of a particularly bad birthday through the lens of another "holiday" movie. Add in a European pagan celebration for the changing of seasons, and it's clear that Thanksgiving will have some seasonal competition from discerning movie lovers.

Updated by Arthur Goyaz on November 25, 2024: The holiday season has begun, arguably the best time of the year to catch up with holiday horror movies. For fans of the genre, the transition from...

10 Horror Movies That Are Both Creepy & A Lot Of Fun
Image
The horror genre keeps churning out great movies, such as the intoxicating Hugh Grant thriller Heretic. Part of its success is how it's able to produce movies that not only terrify audiences with gross-out scenes or a well-timed jump-scare, but also be a ton of fun. A great example of this is the Terrifier series, with Terrifier 3's funniest moments arriving among the requisite brutality and gore. Thanks mainly to Art the Clown's silent, but deadly, humor.

However, it's not just more recent horror films that have managed to be creepy as all hell, while bringing some solid fun along the way. Classic franchises have gained popularity thanks to quick-witted villains like Freddy Krueger, who is also incredibly creepy. The great thing about the horror genre is its ability to bring audiences together, to share an experience that'll be intense, and uncomfortable at times, but also a lot of fun.

Trick 'r Treat Director Shares Promising Update on Long-Gestating Sequel
Image
Trick 'r Treat fans just got a much-needed update about the franchise's big-screen future. Michael Doughtery, who wrote and directed the original horror movie, recently offered a positive update on the long-gestating sequel.

In a new commentary track for Trick 'r Treat, released in Arrow Video's 4K Ultra HD edition of the movie, Dougherty opened up about the difficulties plaguing the sequel, which was first announced back in 2013. "Its tricky, because I think we really did capture lightning in a bottle with this one, and it nearly killed me. What a lot of people dont realize is that the bulk of our favorite horror movies, especially the ones that introduced new horror icons, were all independent movies," said Dougherty (via Bloody Disgusting) about having to work within the studio system for Trick 'r Treat.

Michael Dougherty at an event for Trick 'r Treat (2007)
At Monday night's special fan screening of the cult horror classic Trick 'r Treat hosted by Legendary, the film's iconic character, Sam, and director, Michael Dougherty, stole the show by announcing a sequel during the Q&A session. Other panel participants included two of the film's stars Dylan Baker and Brian Cox, as well as a surprise appearance by producer Bryan Singer.

Watch the entire panel below, moderated by Seth Green.

Director Michael Dougherty started the conversation by discussing how the idea for a sequel came about.

"It's funny because when I first dreamt up the idea of making the first film, I thought, "How neat would it be if we made them a series?" I'm a firm believer that October should be filled with Halloween movies, or horror movies. That's something I remember from childhood. Horror movies and Halloween, they go hand-in-hand. And so the idea was, "Well we...

Trick 'r Treat - Blu-ray Review
The treat is that this fine Halloween themed anthology film looks great in high definition on Blu-ray. The bit of a trick is that several of the special features were made exclusive to the Blu-ray. It is Halloween night and many have plans of a spooky kind. Emma (Leslie Bibb) ignores an ancient tradition of Halloween and pays dearly. Principal Steven Wilkins (Dylan Baker) has to have a talk with one of his troubled students (Brent Kelly) before beginning his questionable Halloween activities. Laurie (Anna Paquin) is a shy girl and needs to find a date if she is to attend a party with her friends Danielle (Lauren Lee Smith), Janet (Moneca Delain), and Maria (Rochelle Aytes), but...

Trick 'r Treat (2009)
Written and directed by Michael Dougherty

Featuring Anna Paquin, Tahmoh Penikett, Rochelle Aytes, Dylan Baker, Lauren Lee Smith, Quinn Lord, Brett Kelly, Moneca Delain, Isabelle Deluce, Leslie Bibb, Jean-Luc Bilodeau

Review by Lis Fies

Warner Brothers apparently had no idea what a rare and wonderful cash cow it had acquired in Trick r' Treat, and made the totally bone-headed decision of releasing this stellar movie straight to DVD instead of giving it what would have been a smashingly lucrative theatrical release supplanting tired warhorse Saw this Halloween season. Not that Hollywood is known for understanding or respecting thriller/horror material and its fans, but their throwaway treatment of Trick 'r Treat is shockingly dumb even for them...

To add insult to injury, they've printed a woefully inadequate amount of DVDs to supply the awesome word of mouth, to the point that it's difficult to find a copy to buy or rent anywhere except in Blu-ray.

Horror Sequel Outrage: 'Lost Boys 2: The Tribe'
Filed under: Horror, Warner Brothers, Home Entertainment, Remakes and Sequels

If it had any other title, Lost Boys 2: The Tribe wouldn't provoke any outrage. But if it had any other title, would anybody give it a second glance? I harbored a ray of hope, but it doesn't take very long to realize that Lost Boys 2: The Tribe was always destined for the direct to video garbage heap.

The 1987 original, photographed by the superbly talented Michael Chapman, was super stylish and jammed with juicy performances, cynical wisecracks, and post-modern tweaks to cinematic vampire legends. The best idea was placing fanged lords of the night in a sun-soaked California coastal town populated by aging hippies and freaks, not to mention a boardwalk, rollercoaster, and great, crashing surf.

As a budget sequel, LB2 has to make do with less attractive, less flattering video imagery and the rockier Canadian coastline standing in for "Santa Carla" * (actually,...
