Police End Investigation Into Kneecap’s Glastonbury Performance
Image
The British police force that began investigating the Irish rap group Kneecap after their Glastonbury Festival performance last month has backed down, per the BBC.

In their set, the group doubled down on their long-time support for Palestine and their condemnation of what they’ve controversially called “genocide” by Israel in the region. They also led a vulgar chant against British prime minister Keir Starmer.

On July 18, the BBC reported that the Avon and Somerset Police announced that in following advice from the Crown Prosecution Service, it had decided not...

Kneecap Hit Out at Keir Starmer, Rod Stewart at Much-Discussed Glastonbury 2025 Set
Image
After much discussion and controversy, Kneecap played Glastonbury 2025 this afternoon, hitting out at British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Rod Stewart during a packed-out set.

Politicians including Starmer had called for the band to be removed from the festival’s line-up, with prime minister saying it would not be “appropriate” to have them on the line-up.

It comes after the band’s Mo Chara – real name Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh – was charged with a terror offence after he allegedly displayed a Hezbollah flag onstage during a show in London late last year.

Kneecap Shocks as Expected With Raucous Glastonbury Set: “The BBC Editor Is Going to Have Some Job”
Image
Kneecap shocked exactly as expected at a raucous Glastonbury set on Saturday.

The Irish rap trio has drawn widespread criticism in recent months, with one of the members, Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, charged with a terror offence last month. Glastonbury partner, the BBC, stood by their decision to air their set, despite U.K. culture secretary Lisa Nandy’s comments that the band “thrive on the oxygen of publicity.” Nandy said Thursday: “Personally, I don’t want to see that on TV screens.”

On Saturday afternoon at Glastonbury’s West Holts stage, which was fenced off as they came on due to overcrowding, Ó hAnnaidh told the 30,000-person crowd: “Glastonbury, I’m a free man!” Clips of newsreaders announcing his terror charge played before the band came on, as well as pro-Palestine messages and videos of various U.K. politicians criticizing the decision to have the band play at the festival.

Kneecap’s Mo Chara Granted Unconditional Bail at First Hearing on Terror Charge
Image
Kneecap’s Mo Chara was released on unconditional bail at his first court appearance in London on terror charges tied to an incident where he allegedly displayed a Hezbollah flag at a concert.

The preliminary hearing at the Westminster Magistrates’ Court Wednesday June 18 was largely procedural. The Belfast rapper, real name Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, spoke only to confirm his name, and the judge scheduled his next court date for Aug. 20. If convicted, Ó hAnnaidh could face up to six months in prison, and a fine.

The terror charge is...

Kneecap to Perform at 2025 Glastonbury Festival Despite Calls to Drop Band
Image
The controversial Belfast rap band Kneecap will still appear at the 2025 Glastonbury music festival in the U.K., organizers announced Tuesday.

Kneecap keeping its Glastonbury billing by performing on the West Holts Stage on June 28 follows political pressure to drop the band after one of its members, Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh, was charged with a terror offense in the U.K. after an incident on Nov. 21 at a venue in north London.

The group, whose members include Naoise Ó Cairealláin and J.J. Ó Dochartaigh, has drawn widespread criticism and the attention of the Metropolitan Police after online videos showed the band allegedly calling for the death of British parliament ministers, as well as chanting “up Hamas, up Hezbollah.”

It is illegal in the U.K. to express support for Hezbollah as it is considered a terrorist organization in Britain. And in April, Kneecap displayed political messages about the ongoing war...

Kneecap Play First Shows Since Terror Charge: ‘They Tried to Stop This Gig’
Image
Kneecap played their first gigs since member Mo Chara was charged with a terror offense in London this week, alleging that authorities tried to cancel the shows.

Earlier in the week, Chara – real name Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh – was charged with a terror offense after he allegedly displayed a Hezbollah flag onstage during a show in London late last year.

“We deny this ‘offense’ and will vehemently defend ourselves,” the band wrote in response, adding: “This is a carnival of distraction. We are not the story. Genocide is.” In an earlier statement last month,...

Kneecap Member Charged With Terror Offense, Band Vows to “Vehemently Defend Ourselves”
Image
Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh, one-third of Irish rap group Kneecap, has been charged with a terror offense in the U.K.

Ó Hannaidh, who performs under the name Mo Chara and was a star of Rich Peppiatt’s “print the legend” biopic on the Belfast, Ireland-based band, is accused of “displaying a flag in support of proscribed organization Hezbollah at a London gig,” according to the city’s Metropolitan Police, also known as Scotland Yard.

The 27-year-old was charged by the police after an incident on Nov. 21, 2024 at a venue in north London. He is due to appear in court on June 18.

The band took to social media after news of the charge. “We deny this ‘offense’ and will vehemently defend ourselves,” said Kneecap. “This is political policing. This is a carnival of distraction. 14,000 babies are about to die of starvation in Gaza, with food sent by the world sitting...

Kneecap Band Member Charged With Terror Offense In The UK
Image
Liam O’Hanna ( Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh), a member of Irish-language rap group Kneecap, has been charged with a terror offense.

The charge is related to his reportedly displaying a flag in support of Hezbollah at a concert in London in November 2024.

The Lebanese Shia Islamist political party and paramilitary group is proscribed as a terrorist organisation and banned under UK law.

The UK’s Metropolitan Polce said O’Hanna, whose stage name is Mo Chara, had been charged via postal requisition.

He has been summoned to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday June 18.

The charge follows the band running into the hot water at the Coachella in April after they projected “f*ck Israel,” “free Palestine” and other messages of protest against U.S. support of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza on the screen of the festival’s Sonora Stage. The messages were condemned by leading Jewish human rights organizations in the U.

Kneecap Concerts Canceled In Germany Following Anti-Israel Statements at Coachella
Image
Irish hip-hop trio Kneecap have had several upcoming concerts in Germany canceled after the band’s controversial “fuck Israel” message displayed on the screen during their Coachella set, along with resurfaced videos from a Kneecap concert where the band called to kill members of parliament.

Last week, the German music festivals Hurricane and Southside, organized by Fkp Scorpio, appeared to remove Kneecap from the festival lineups without explanation. The band confirmed in a post on X, formerly Twitter, that the group “will not be performing at Hurricane or Southside Festival this year,” instead pointing fans to three headline concerts in Berlin, Cologne and Hamburg slated for early September. But as of Wednesday, the ticket pages for the concerts state those shows have been nixed as well.

Some of Kneecap’s Israel-Palestine statements could be considered hate speech under some interpretations of German law. For example, in some German states including Berlin,...

Irish Band Kneecap Displays Anti-Israel Messages During Coachella Weekend 2 Set ‘Blindsiding’ Festival Organizers
Image
Irish hip-hop group Kneecap drew headlines during their weekend two performance at Coachella 2025, but not for the reasons a buzzing band typically claims. The group performed in the Sonora tent in front of large screens that projected references to genocide, denouncements of Israel and calls to “free Palestine.” Their set on April 18 also condemned the U.S. for its military support of Israel.

While the Coachella music festival is no stranger to political statements made onstage, this call to “Fuck Israel” has incensed Jewish groups who are calling out the fest’s promoter Goldenvoice (a subsidiary of Aeg) for its part in booking the band, which has been known to espouse the ideology of terrorist groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah. Kneecap followed up its Coachella set on social media with numerous video posts about their “uncensored messaging” and a request for young Americans to send the clips to President Trump,...

BAFTA Awards: ‘Conclave’ Scores Best Film as ‘The Brutalist’ Ties With Four Wins and Mikey Madison Surprises in Leading Actress
Image
At a BAFTA Awards where there was no clear frontrunner going into the ceremony, British Academy voters chose to largely share the spoils when it came to handing out honors.

But only one could win the top prize of best film, and this year that went to “Conclave,” which had entered the night with the most number of nominations (11). Edward Berger’s Vatican thriller wound up tying with Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist” with four BAFTA wins each. Of its four, the 3.5-hour American epic won leading actor for Adrien Brody and director for Corbet.

Meanwhile, there was a surprise when Mikey Madison was named leading actress for “Anora” (one of two wins for Sean Baker’s sex worker comedy), with “The Substance” star Demi Moore’s seem by many as sure bet. Coralie Fargeat’s body-horror instead took home one award, for makeup and hairstyling.

Elsewhere, Jacques Audiard’s crime musical “Emilia Pérez,...

International Disruptors: Writer-Director Rich Peppiatt Talks Bringing Politically Charged Irish-Language Biopic ‘Kneecap’ To Life, Taking Risks & Next Steps
Image
Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we shine a spotlight on key people shaking up the offshore marketplace. This week, we’re talking to writer-director Rich Peppiatt, whose debut feature Kneecap has taken the indie world by storm since it launched at Sundance last year. The Irish-language film about Belfast hip-hop trio Kneecap, which was snapped up by Sony Pictures Classics last year, has been selected as Ireland’s entry for the Best International Oscar race. The film has notched up six BAFTA nominations and won seven BIFAs. He tells us about the challenges of putting that feature together and maps out what’s next.

Rich Peppiatt isn’t afraid of failure, so long as it’s on his own terms. When developing his subversive and politically charged Irish-language feature Kneecap, which has taken the festival and awards circuits by storm since it launched at Sundance just over a year ago,...

How Director Rich Peppiatt Reinvented an Entire Film Genre With ‘Kneecap’
Image
“If I could do it with an iPhone and 50 quid, I was making this film,” says Rich Peppiatt about his award-winning feature Kneecap.

The Irish hip-hop “print the legend” biopic on the Belfast-based rap trio — boasting Michael Fassbender among its ensemble — is a far cry from iPhone quality, and has taken the indie film world by storm.

Peppiatt’s Irish-language film, riddled with expletives, hallucinogenics and baton twirling mischief, swept up at the British Independent Film Awards in December and on Wednesday, scored six BAFTA nods, including for best British film and outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer. It makes Kneecap the British Academy’s third most nominated debut film ever and Peppiatt the most nominated debut director in BAFTA history. It’s been no surprise to anyone that the movie is Ireland’s Oscar submission for best international feature film this year, too.

Peppiatt can list journalist,...

“Conclave” leads the pack of 2025 BAFTA Film Awards nominees with 12 nods, one more than “Emilia Pérez,” which had appeared on the most BAFTA longlists (15) when they were announced on Jan. 3.

Mia McKenna-Bruce and Will Sharpe announced the 2025 nominees live on Wednesday in London.

The British academy nominated “Conclave” for best film, outstanding British film, best director (for Edward Berger), lead actor (Ralph Fiennes), supporting actress (Isabella Rossellini), and adapted screenplay (Peter Straughan). “Emilia Pérez” picked up nods for best film, director (Jacques Audiard), lead actress (Karla Sofía Gascón), supporting actress (Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña) and adapted screenplay (Audiard).

“The Brutalist,” meanwhile, received nine nominations, including best film, director (Brady Corbet) and actor (Adrien Brody), followed by seven each for “Anora,” “Dune: Part Two” and “Wicked.” Of those three, only “Anora” made the cut for best film and director (Sean Baker). This morning’s nominations went largely to script, with movies The Brutalist, Anora, Wicked and A Complete Unknown also scoring well among nominees. British and Irish dramedy Kneecap also found favor with six nominations.

BAFTA Blesses ‘Conclave’ With 12 Film Awards Nominations, One Ahead of ‘Emilia Pérez’
Image
Blessed be Edward Berger, whose Vatican drama Conclave is now officially the front-runner in this year’s BAFTA Film Awards nominations.

The Ralph Fiennes- and Stanley Tucci-starring film, based on the novel by Robert Harris, leads the way with 12 BAFTA nominations — ahead of Emilia Pérez‘s 11 and The Brutalist‘s nine, as unveiled by actors Will Sharpe and Mia McKenna-Bruce from the British Academy’s headquarters in London mid-day on Wednesday.

Among others, Conclave is in the running for best film, outstanding British film, best director for Oscar winner Berger, leading actor for Fiennes and adapted screenplay for Peter Straughan. Isabella Rossellini is also nominated in the supporting actress category.

In 2023, Berger’s World War I drama All Quiet on the Western Front picked up 14 BAFTA nominations, equaling the record for a non-English-language film first set by Ang Lee’s wuxia masterpiece Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It also ended up with seven wins,...

‘Kneecap’ Dominates Irish Academy Awards Nominations With 17 Nods
Image
“Kneecap” — the Irish-language music biopic that became one of the buzziest indie films of 2024 and is now tipped for both Oscar and BAFTA recognition — has, perhaps unsurprisingly, emerged far ahead of the pack of nominees for the 2025 Irish Film & TV Academy (IFTA) awards.

Rich Peppiatt’s raucous comedy, about (and starring) the Belfast rap trio of the same name, has landed an astonishing 17 nominations for the awards, including best film, director, three of the six slots for lead actor, three of the six for supporting actress and one for Michael Fassbender in the supporting actor category.

“Small Things Like These,” the considerably quieter Irish drama fronted (and produced) by Cillian Murphy has nine nominations, including lead actor for Murphy, who won the award last year for “Oppenheimer.”

Having been co-produced by Irish company Tailored Films, Ali Abbasi’s Donald Trump biopic “The Apprentice” is also in the mix, with four nominations.

This Year’s International Oscar Dark Horses, From ‘Kneecap’ to ‘How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies’
Image
World War II dramas and grand historical epics still have their place in the best international feature Oscar category — Italy’s contender, Vermiglio, the story of a Sicilian army deserter who arrives in a remote Alpine village in 1944, is betting on the Academy appeal of World War II tales — but the expansion of the Academy to include more members outside the U.S. has broadened the range of films in contention. An Oscar shortlist these days is as likely to include a Korean horror-thriller about class conflict (2019 Oscar winner Parasite) or a donkey-focused road movie from Poland (2022 nominee Eo) as it is a handsome old-school costume drama.

Beyond the obvious frontrunners this year, dark horses abound: Rich Peppiatt’s cheeky “docu-drama” Kneecap, about an Irish rap group, has been winning audiences to the cause since its Sundance debut (awards masters Sony Pictures Classics snatched it up on the eve of...

Songs by Pharrell, Elton John, and Lainey Wilson, as well as multiple selections from Emelia Pérez, have made the Oscars’ shortlist for Best Original Song.

Pharrell’s “Piece by Piece,” the title track from his animated Lego biopic, made the cut, as did John’s “Never Too Late,” co-written with Brandi Carlile and Andrew Watt for his recent documentary. And Wilson secured a shortlist nod for her contribution to Twisters, “Out of Oklahoma,” co-written with Luke Dick and Shane McAnally.

Expectedly, the song category includes several high-profile singers, musicians and songwriters, such as Pharrell Williams, Elton John, Brandi Carlile, Lainey Wilson, Maren Morris, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Robbie Williams, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

Surprising Oscar contender Kristen Wiig, who co-wrote “Harper and Will Go West” from Will Ferrell’s “Will & Harper” documentary, also keeps her hopes alive for her first Academy Award nomination.

Wrangling a Trio of Anarchic Rappers to Make Irish Oscar Entry ‘Kneecap’ Was a Challenge
Image
British writer/director Rich Peppiatt was convinced that Mo Chara and Móglaí Bap, the raucous stars of the Irish Oscar entry “Kneecap”, could play themselves in his biopic, along with their bandmate, Belfast schoolteacher DJ Próvai. They could: but it took a while to get the laissez-faire band on board. The end results have been smashing, from winning the Next audience award at Sundance 2024 to seven British Independent Film Awards including Best British Independent Film.

About five years ago, soon after Peppiatt moved to Belfast, escaping from his crying newborn one night, he caught rappers Kneecap at a local pub. “I was blown away by their stage presence, their charisma,” said Peppiatt on a Zoom call. “And not just that, they were so overtly political, they were throwing baggies of rock white powder into the crowd. They were snorting things on stage. It was ‘Ok, this is pretty out there,...

Golden Globes Snubs & Surprises: ‘Wicked’ Director Jon M. Chu, Meryl Streep, ‘Fallout’ & ‘Kneecap’
Image
In an awards season that is looking pretty wicked on a number of levels, the Golden Globes pulled back the curtain on some magical contenders this morning.

With nominations announced by Mindy Kaling and a slightly named challenged Morris Chestnut very early Monday, the formerly HFPA-run ceremony waved a wand of aspiration in front of the likes of Hacks, Cate Blanchett, Slow Horses‘ Gary Oldman, Emilia Perez, Jodie Foster, Only Murders in the Building, Shrinking’s stars, The Bear & more. However, even with so many categories it sometimes feels impossible anyone could be left out, for some it will not be “the party of the year,” to quote Globes boss Helen Hoehne this Am.

Take a look at our list of who was not invited to the Nikki Glaser (who did get a comedy special nom Btw) fronted January 5 shindig on CBS and Paramount+. Plus, no streamer pun intended, a...
