Ethan Coen’s raunchy, gory detective movie “Honey Don’t!,” starring Margaret Qualley, Aubrey Plaza and Chris Evans, premiered to a rowdy Cannes crowd at midnight on Friday. The film earned a six-minute standing ovation, with writer Tricia Cooke declaring: “More queer cinema all the time!”
“That’s a fun way to end the festival,” Coen said as he took the microphone and quieted the clapping crowd. “Oh, and short, for a movie that started after midnight. Very humane.”
Indeed, the 90-minute “Honey Don’t” didn’t begin unspooling until nearly 12:30 a.m., after a half-hour delay entering the Palais. But the Cannes crowd didn’t seem to mind the wait, cheering loudly for Coen, Qualley, Plaza and the rest of the team when they finally entered the theater, then clapping vigorously for every producer and distributor card before the movie began.
One audience member even yelled, “I love you Aubrey!

Back in January, Hollywood was rocked by the news that Jeff Baena had taken his own life.
Baena was a filmmaker and the husband of beloved actress Aubrey Plaza.
Known for his sense of humor and effervescent personality, Baena’s death came as a complete shock to those who knew him best.
But sadly, it seems that Jeff’s life was not as picture-perfect as it appeared on the outside.

Aubrey and Jeff closely guarded their privacy, and very little was known about their relationship.
In fact, no one even knew they’d tied the knot until several months later, when Aubrey let it slip in an Instagram post.

Aubrey Plaza made an appearance on the special 50th anniversary episode of Saturday Night Live, introducing musical acts Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard who sang "Nothing Compares 2 U." It's Plaza's first public appearance since the tragic death of her husband, Jeff Baena, who took his life on Jan. 3, 2025.
During the brief introduction of Miley and Brittany, Plaza wore black pants and jacket along with a tie-dye shirt. Fans of the star quickly recognized that she was honoring her late husband with the shirt. The couple had been together for 10 years when they married in 2021. Aubrey Plaza Honors Late Husband Jeff Baena on ‘SNL50’ in First Public Appearance at Since His Death
Aubrey Plaza made her first public appearance since the death of her husband Jeff Baena on Saturday Night Live‘s 50th anniversary special.
During the special, which aired Sunday night on NBC, Plaza, who was once an intern on SNL, briefly appeared to introduce musical guests Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard. However, it was what Plaza was wearing that caught the attention of fans. Along with her dress pants and a blazer, Plaza wore a tie-dye shirt which served as a tribute to her late husband. The reason the tie-dye shirt was so notable was due to Plaza’s previous comments about how the couple wore tie-dye for their spontaneous nuptials.
During a 2021 interview on The Drew Barrymore Show, Plaza had said that the two “got married on a whim” and that tie-dyeing was a hobby Baena grew interested in during the pandemic.

Aubrey Plaza made her first public appearance since the loss of her husband during Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary special. The actress and comedian, whose husband filmmaker Jeff Baena passed away on January 3 at 47, returned to the stage to introduce a musical performance featuring Miley Cyrus, Brittany Howard, and The Roots.
Plaza, who was previously scheduled to appear at the Golden Globes, was seen wearing a tie-dye shirt—a possible nod to a personal memory. In a past interview, she recalled that Baena had embraced tie-dye during a period of isolation, sharing that the couple had planned to wear matching tie-dye pajamas for their wedding ceremony in 2020. The subtle sartorial detail at the show may have served as a quiet homage to her late husband.
Following Baena’s death, Plaza released a joint statement with the families of Baena and Stern. The statement expressed deep sorrow while extending gratitude for the outpouring of support.

“Saturday Night Live” celebrated its 50th anniversary with a three-and-a-half-hour Sunday night primetime special, because there were too many stars to fit into 90 minutes.

In a surprise appearance, Aubrey Plaza introduced the duo’s performance. For Plaza, it wasn’t just a return to 30 Rock after being a former Saturday Night Live page, but her first public appearance since the passing of her husband, director Jeff Baena, earlier this year.
Cyrus and Howard’s choice of cover was, of course, tied to SNL lore. While the purple attire and Howard’s ripping guitar solo aligned it with the Prince version, “Nothing Compared 2 U” was made famous by Sinéad O’Connor. Aubrey Plaza is one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood, known for her sharp comedic timing and unique on-screen presence. She has played many memorable roles in both television and movies, often bringing humor and unpredictability to her characters. But when she appeared on Criminal Minds, she completely changed expectations with a performance that was dark and truly chilling.

“We should have gone to Bora Bora like the Pattersons,” says Delores (Sarah Goldberg) in Bubble & Squeak, writer-director Evan Twohy’s feature debut. A quirky, prescriptively surreal comedy in the vein of the late Jeff Baena, with a hefty debt to the two Sacha Baron Cohen Borat movies, it’s a very Sundance kind of funny that goes all in on a very bizarre premise. If you go with it, it will take you all the way, but for those with a low tolerance for cheerfully madcap bonkersness, its lean 97 minutes may well seem like an eternity.
The pre-credit sequence very quickly sets the scene. Delores and her husband Declan (Himesh Patel) are sitting in a nondescript, steely-gray office room, where they have been waiting for well over an hour. The two Americans are on honeymoon, preferring to go “off the beaten track,” and their wanderlust has taken them to a strange,...

Jeff Baena was an extremely talented writer and director with a unique ability to ground even the most absurd stories in emotional realism. Even though Baena’s films tackled such topics as religious isolation (The Little Hours), mental illness (Horse Girl), and familial trauma (Joshy), the stories he told had a universally relatable quality. Baena notably cast his wife, Aubrey Plaza, in several great roles in which she was given the freedom to be as eccentric as possible; although Plaza risked being typecast after her breakout role in Parks and Recreation, these films gave her the opportunity to take risks on projects that required a great deal of bravery. While they had many successful collaborations, Life After Beth was a surprisingly earnest horror comedy that addressed serious themes of loss, regret, and perseverance.

Aubrey Plaza, best known for her role as the sardonic April Ludgate in Parks and Recreation, seems to thrive in the space between deadpan comedy and genuine chaos. There’s an undeniable magnetic charm to her—a wild energy carefully wrapped in an intentionally aloof exterior. But behind the biting humor, there’s a story of resilience and personal transformation that not many may know.
Aubrey Plaza as April in Parks and Recreation | image: NBC
There’s something infectious about her unapologetically honest nature. Her characters, like April, have a way of leaving lasting impressions because they resonate with an authenticity that feels refreshing amidst the noise of Hollywood. But just as she’s made a name for herself through these quirky, deadpan roles, Plaza’s real-life story proves even more interesting and filled with unexpected depth.

Director of enjoyably twisted films including Life After Beth, The Little Hours and Spin Me Round
One of the few actor/director couples in the US independent film scene, Aubrey Plaza and Jeff Baena were never keen to discuss their personal lives in detail, but their relationship informed the four enjoyably twisted movies they made together, beginning with the zombie comedy Life After Beth (2014).
Baena, who has taken his own life aged 47, was a shrewd and witty writer-director, while Plaza brought her witheringly sarcastic, cooler-than-thou persona, as well as jaded line readings and a heavy-lidded comic ennui, to the roles he wrote for her. Their films had an emotional depth beneath the deceptively arch or flippant surface.

Some of the most beloved movie actors of all time trace their beginnings to humble network sitcoms. From Woody Harrelson breaking through in 1985 with Cheers to Will Smith playing a fictional version of himself on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, all the way to recent years with Chris Pratt undergoing a serious body transformation from Andy Dwyer to Star-Lord. This rise to stardom is strangely becoming more and more common despite sitcoms being on a bit of a downturn. Sitcoms have become a breeding ground for the next generation of film stars, and this doesn't end at Hollywood blockbusters.
The independent film scene is littered with former sitcom stars turned compelling artists. The most well-known example may be Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse's very own Peter B. Parker, Jake Johnson. Johnson has worked with a litany of renowned indie and mumblecore filmmakers,...
