'Life on the Line' Is a Forgotten Movie That Is a Streaming Hit on Tubi
Image

Life on the Line is exactly that kind of movie, but that hasn’t stopped it landing the #1 spot on Tubi this weekend with its true story about the work of electrical linemen attempting to battle the elements during a deadly storm.

Released in 2015, the disaster movie – in all senses of the term – is headed up by John Travolta, who has seen a career filled with incredible highs and some catastrophic lows, with strong support from Sharon Stone, Kate Bosworth, and Devon Sawa. Travolta plays lineman Beau Ginner, who has dedicated his life to maintaining the electrical grid of a Texan town. For those who need the synopsis – brace yourself for this detailed official story description – it reads:

Young Martin Prequel Series in the Works From Martin Lawrence
Image
Martin Lawrence may have taken notice of the success of the Big Bang Theory spinoff series Young Sheldon. The Bad Boys: Ride or Die star is bringing back his own sitcom in a similar manner, and it will even be called Young Martin.

Per Deadline, Lawrence and his production company, RunTelDat, are teaming up with Marvin Peart's WonderHill Studios for Young Martin. Unlike the original Martin, however, Young Martin won't be a traditional sitcom. The prequel will be a drama series with hour-long episodes, following a teenage Martin Payne as he navigates "the complexities of transitioning from youth to adulthood."

‘Martin’ Prequel Drama Series In Works From Martin Lawrence, Bob Yari & WonderHill Studios
Image
Exclusive: The Martin cast reunion was a highlight of this year’s Emmy Awards, tapping into nostalgia to bring the 90s sitcom back into the pop culture conversation. The beloved comedy is now looking for a more permanent return with Young Martin, a new hourlong drama series from Martin Lawrence and his production company, RunTelDat, in collaboration with Marvin Peart’s WonderHill Studios.

The hourlong Young Martin is contemporary origin story centering on Martin Payne, a charismatic teenager navigating the complexities of transitioning from youth to adulthood. It reimagines the character played by Lawrence on Martin, paying homage to the original show, which aired on Fox from 1992-97.

Young Martin‘s dramatic bent resembles the route another signature 1990s sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, starring Lawrence’s Bad Boys co-lead Will Smith, took with Bel-Air, executive produced by Smith.

Executive producing Young Martin are Lawrence, Rae Proctor, Robert Lawrence...

Bob Yari Departs Marvin Peart’s WonderHill to Form New Distribution Label
Image
Less than a year after announcing dual leadership at the production and distribution venture WonderHill Studios, veteran producers Bob Yari and Marvin Peart are parting ways.

The pair will disband as co-CEOs of the company, though Yari will remain an investor. The split is amicable, individuals familiar with the company said, and the men feel more comfortable moving forward with their own distinct visions. Peart will stay on as WonderHill CEO and oversee day-to-day operations moving forward.

Yari has formed a new production and releasing engine called Magenta Light Studios. His goal is to release three to five films per year in theaters. Both companies are presently active in the acquisitions space, a market perpetually in need of independent players that can compete with streaming giants and legacy studios.

Yari is best known for producing the 2004 drama “Crash,” which took the Academy Award for best picture. His credits include early-aughts...

Weinstein Company Buyer Lantern Capital Facing December Trial In Battle With ‘Mob Wives’ EP Marvin Peart Over Assets’ Purchase – Update
Image
Update, 4:52 Pm: After almost three years, Marvin Peart’s multi-million dollar lawsuit over the acquisition of The Weinstein Company’s assets now has a trial date.

Originally looking for $110 million, the Mob Wives executive producer looks set to face off with Lantern Capitol Partners on December 1 in Los Angeles Superior Court, according to a recent notice from Judge Robert Broadbelt III. Unless of course Peart and his Marro Media shingle reach a settlement with the Texas-based private equity firm beforehand.

Regardless, in the diseased leg hold trap that has become almost everything to do with the incarcerated Harvey Weinstein, his alleged and trial proven abuses, and the ragged remnants of the Oscar nominations factory the producer and his brother Bob had in TWC, it’s not that quite straightforward – even for this particular convoluted portion of the saga. Yes, Peart was successfully last month in getting most of the...

How Marvin Peart Rescued ‘The War With Grandpa’; Producer Already Hatching Sequel
Image
Exclusive: It’s been said that some movies aren’t necessarily born, rather they fight their way to life.

A lot of that responsibility falls on the shoulders of a film’s producer, who well after the cameras have turned off, and the set striked, sees a movie through to its endgame. That person in the case of 101 Studios and Brookdale Studios’ family comedy The War With Grandpa was Marvin Peart, who made certain that the movie, first pitched to him by his young son Tre Peart, would be realized on the big screen — and a pandemic nor a studio going out of business wasn’t going to stop it.

The War With Grandpa is expected to hit an interesting milestone at the domestic box office, crossing $20M ultimately fueled by the Thanksgiving holiday stretch. With the threshold of success being different for movies during the pandemic with the second largest exhibitor Regal closed,...

John David Washington in Tenet (2020)
‘The War With Grandpa’ Passes ‘Tenet’ With $3.6 Million Box Office Opening
John David Washington in Tenet (2020)
After five weekends atop a pandemic-drained box office, “Tenet” has ceded the No. 1 spot to 101 Studios’ “The War With Grandpa,” an indie family film starring Robert De Niro that is serving as a trial balloon of sorts for the genre.

Released on 2,250 screens, “The War With Grandpa” took in $3.6 million in its opening weekend for a per-theater average of $1,604. “Tenet,” in its sixth weekend, took in $2.1 million from 2,215 locations to bring its total to $48.3 million domestically and $323.3 million worldwide. Among holdovers, Solstice’s “Unhinged” is approaching the $20 million mark after eight weekends, while Open Road’s “After We Collided” has grossed $42.3 million globally.

“The War With Grandpa” was one of the films that began development under The Weinstein Company and was reclaimed by the producers after the studio went bankrupt. 101 Studios, co-founded by the film’s producer Marvin Peart, acquired distribution rights to the film this past June. The...

The War with Grandpa Trailer Has Robert De Niro Battling Pint-Size Pranksters
Image
The first trailer for The War with Grandpa is here. 101 Studios scooped up the rights to the movie back in June in a deal with Brookdale Studios. They intend to give Robert De Niro's latest a theatrical release this fall, making it one of the early wide-release movies to help theaters potentially draw in audiences after the months-long shutdown. In this case, De Niro is exercising his comedy chops in a family-friendly comedy that pits the legendary actor against a grade-schooler.

We start off with Robert De Niro struggling with a self-checkout machine at the grocery store, which leads to some trouble. To keep him out of trouble, his daughter offers to let him stay at her home with the rest of his family. Unfortunately, his grandson has to give up his room. This is the genesis of the war promised by the title. The two end up...

Robert De Niro Comedy ‘The War With Grandpa’ Eyes October Wide Release Via 101 Studios – Update

The Robert De Niro family comedy moves off the Sept. 18 weekend, where it was against Disney/20th Century Studios’ The King’s Man and to a weekend where there aren’t any wide releases. Ron Burkle’s Yucaipa Sues Lantern For Fraud Over Weinstein Co. Sale Deal
Exclusive: Ron Burkle’s Yucaipa Companies has filed suit against Lantern Capital today accusing the private equity firm of fraud, breach of contract and other charges in connection with the purchase of The Weinstein Company assets.

Looking for a wide range of damages, Yucaipa is claiming it shared confidential information with Lantern as the Dallas-based company positioned itself as the stalking horse bidder for TWC’s assets. Now, Burkle’s side says Lantern is refusing to pay a 2% transaction fee that was promised in exchange for its expertise.

“It appears that Lantern never intended to honor the oral agreement, but only fraudulently induced Yucaipa to enter into the oral agreement so that Lantern could use the confidential information to become the stalking horse bidder in the bankruptcy,” according to the jury trial seeking suit submitted Monday in L.A. Superior Court contends. (read it here)

Lead Attorney In Harvey Weinstein Class Action Speaks Out Over Racism And Fraud Allegations Leveled Against Lantern Capital
Harvey Weinstein and Ryan Kavanaugh
Exclusive: The lead attorney in a class action lawsuit against Harvey Weinstein today voiced concern over allegations of fraud and racism leveled against the Dallas-based private equity firm poised to acquire The Weinstein Company.

Producer Marvin Peart hit Lantern Capital with a $110 million lawsuit Monday, claiming he was excluded from the deal after bringing Lantern to the negotiating table. “Institutional racism” is being cited as part of the reason for Peart, who is African American, being dumped by Lantern.

Cris Armenta, the national class-action counsel for the six women who filed a suit last December against Weinstein, on behalf of all women who found themselves on the disgraced movie producer’s “casting couch,” issued a statement to Deadline raising concerns about the allegations in the Lantern suit.

“We wish this deal would go to close for the benefit of all the unsecured creditors. However, I have always been suspicious about...

Weinstein Co Buyer Lantern Entertainment Accused of Racism, Fraud in $110 Million Lawsuit
The already-troubled acquisition of The Weinstein Co. and its assets by private equity firm Lantern Capital is facing another bump in the road: a $110 million lawsuit.

In a suit filed against Lantern on Monday, Marvin Peart, an executive producer on TWC’s “Mob Wives,” says that he helped orchestrate the deal for Lantern to buy TWC, for which he says Lantern agreed to pay him $10.5 million, and give him a seat on the new TWC board of directors. Peart says that Lantern reneged on its agreement with him after the deal was reached, and that it did so in part because he is African-American.

His lawsuit accuses the Dallas-based firm of breach of contract, fraud, misrepresentation and institutional racism.

Weinstein Company Considers Name Change Following Sex Scandal
Harvey Weinstein and Ryan Kavanaugh
Just one day after embattled executive Harvey Weinstein was essentially fired from The Weinstein Company, which he helped create with his brother Bob Weinstein, the company's board is seeking to distance themselves from him even further. A new report reveals the company's board of directors is considering a change of the company name, with the studio bringing on two different advertising agencies to develop a new "brand identity." This report also reveals that, as part of the fallout from numerous sexual harassment charges, Harvey Weinstein's name is being removed from all of the upcoming film and TV projects he was involved with before his firing.

This report also reveals that, on early Sunday morning, after worrying that he might be given the axe by the company's board of directors, Harvey Weinstein reportedly sent out numerous emails to, "several powerful Hollywood associates," asking them to plead to his company's board...
