Before he had the ear of the president, former White House Chief Political Strategist Steve Bannon tried his hand at Hollywood. As a producer, he was behind several small movies, but he really hit his movie-making stride writing and directing conservative documentaries aimed at Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. The New York Times on Wednesday rejected complaints from Joe Biden’s presidential campaign that the paper was spreading a “baseless conspiracy theory” about the former vice president.

“Our coverage of the Biden campaign and Hunter Biden has been fair and accurate,” said in a statement. “The Biden campaign obviously disagrees and instead of asking to meet with the paper’s leadership to discuss these concerns, they wrote a critical letter and shared it publicly.”

The statement continued, “We will continue to cover Joe Biden with the same tough and fair standards we apply to every candidate in the race and we’re happy to sit down with Biden advisers anytime to discuss news coverage.”

President Donald Trump heads to flood-ravaged Houston for “Howdy, Modi,” a gathering at Nrg Stadium expected to draw 50,000 people. The event celebrates Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was first elected in 2014 and is credited with modernizing India’s economy and addressing climate change. But his military moves in the Kashmir region are controversial, and protesters are expected outside the stadium for him and President Trump.

The Commander-in-Tweet also found time this morning to give a shout-out to The Mothman, a West Virginia legend that purportedly shows up just before major disasters. They’re celebrating the creature today with a festival in that state.

A press release arrived in reporters’ inboxes Wednesday morning trumpeting two major hires for the flagging Donald Trump campaign: Steve Bannon, executive chairman of Brietbart.com, was coming on board as chief executive; and Republican pollster Kellyanne Conway would become campaign manager. Megyn Kelly led her Fox News show Thursday by covering the controversy surrounding ABC anchor George Stephanopoulos, who she says “took a big hit” by failing to inform his employer and viewers that he donated $75,000 to the Clinton Foundation. “It’s a bombshell that he was donating to the very foundation that he was cross-examining this author on without disclosing it,” Kelly said about Stephanopoulos pressing conservative author Peter Schweizer on his book, “Clinton Cash,” during an interview last month. The book “Clinton Cash,” which has been been subject to intense media scrutiny recently, got an update to its Kindle eBook version Thursday in which several factual corrections were made to author Peter Schweizer’s reporting. Media Matters founder and Hillary Clinton surrogate David Brock appeared on Morning Joe Tuesday morning to push back against the new book Clinton Cash: The Untold Story of How and Why Foreign Governments and Businesses Helped Make Bill and Hillary Rich, an investigation by the conservative writer Peter Schweizer into the Clinton Foundation's fundraising while Clinton served as Secretary of State.

Des Moines, Ia -- Every Presidential election year since 1824 has produced a biography of a candidate who has set his or her sights on the White House. The 2011 election is no different. But a combination of fewer print journalists on the trail, a heavy reliance up to the minute information provided via social media, particularly Twitter, and an overall sense of disillusionment with government and politicians could perhaps signal an end to this tradition.

"The books I am selling the most of these days have to do more with government corruption and budgetary restraint," said John Heitzman on Tuesday.

Heitzman, who spoke by phone from his business, is the owner of The Book Store, a small independent book store just yards from most of the hotels that candidates, campaign staff and media members call home when they make the quadrennial pilgrimage to the state in the lead up to the first-in-the-nation Iowa caucuses.

Right-wing doc-maker Steven Bannon is apparently at it again. After his Sarah Palin doc "The Undefeated" stirred up talk everywhere about the former Alaska governor's popularity (or not) as a viable political contender, Real Clear Politics reports that Bannon is planning on making a new film based on Palin adviser Peter Schweizer's forthcoming book, "Throw Them All Out," which details allegations of ethically dubious insider trading and conflicts of interest among members of Congress.

Liberals are tempted to rejoice in Palin's candidacy. But as Michael Tomasky argues, we should all dread the effect of her torrent of lies and demagoguery on our politics.

The real sign that Sarah Palin was finally serious about running for president, missed by most, came in early May and was thus buried under the news of the bin Laden killing. But it was then that Ben Smith of Politico first reported that Randy Scheunemann and Michael Goldfarb, her longtime advisers on foreign policy, had fired her, and she'd decided in their stead to shack up with an associate of Andrew Breitbart named Peter Schweizer. Why did this, to the initiated, signal her "seriousness" about running? Precisely because linking arms with Breitbart-world was such an utterly superficial and unserious move, wholly political in nature, and perfectly in keeping with everything we know about the old high-school-basketball-playing elbow-flinger's notion of how one advances in this world.
