“Disney thought they’d be able to bully us”: Hilary Duff’s Mom is the Reason Lizzie McGuire Sequel Didn’t Happen, Tanking Her Daughter’s Rising Career Abruptly
Image
It’s good to let the golden moments of childhood come flooding back sometimes, isn’t it? For many kids (& kids at heart), the Disney Channel played a starring role in our growing-up days, often feeling like an extension of our lives. Remember the superstar life depicted in Hannah Montana? And, what about the kids acting on a sketch show in Sonny with a Chance or dancing their hearts out in Shake it Up?

Hilary Duff and Lalaine in Lizzie McGuire (2001) | Disney

Then there’s the magical allure of That’s So Raven and Wizards of Waverly Place. While these shows were beloved for their whimsy and fantasy, Disney also struck a chord with characters grounded in reality, like the adorably awkward Lizzie McGuire (Hilary Duff).

Despite immense popularity, the continuation of the series hit a stumbling block over financial disputes. Reportedly, the actress’ mom was pushing for a bigger paycheck.

Adapting Lee Child's Persuader Gives Reacher Season 3 A Major Casting Headache
Image
Reacher season 3 faces casting challenges due to Paulie's unique appearance, being nearly 7 feet tall and more muscle-bound than Reacher. Season 1 of Reacher found success by offering a small-scale conspiracy in a small town, unlike other spy shows with massive scales. Reacher season 2 fell short of season 1's reception by adding too many players and a bigger conspiracy, but season 3 returns to simplicity.

While it is good that Reacher season 3 is adapting Lee Child's Persuader, the book choice creates some major casting challenges for the Amazon show. Reacher season 1 turned out to be way more successful on Prime Video than anticipated because it brought something new to the spy thriller genre. When most spy-centric shows focused on creating high-stakes dramas with massive scales, Reacher season 1 unfolded in a small town, focusing on a small-scale but gripping conspiracy.

Despite having a talented roster of cast members, Reacher season 2 could not match...

Material Girls
Even by the low standards of the genre it represents, this female teen comedy represents a new nadir.

Directed by Martha Coolidge, falling a long way from the similarly themed "Valley Girl" and co-starring sisters Hilary and Haylie Duff in their first screen pairing, "Material Girls" is the sort of witless, cynical exercise that future generations will point to as example of our society's vapidity. Having opened Friday without press screenings, naturally, the film will reach a certain percentage of its target audience, though anyone older than 16 or with Y chromosomes won't bother.

The plot, for those who care, revolves around spoiled rich siblings Ava (Haylie) and Tanzie (Hilary), who are the "faces" of their late father's cosmetics company.

Other than their modeling duties, the girls are content to spend their time instant messaging, talking on their cell phones and pampering themselves in every conceivable way.

But they are forced to abandon their complacency when the company is accused of disfiguring its customers. Attempting to prevent the business from falling into the hands of an archrival (Anjelica Huston, the latest of many Oscar winners who should be forced to return her statue for appearing in projects like this), the girls -- inspired by a glimpse of "Erin Brockovich" on television -- spring into investigative action.

While such films as "Legally Blonde" and "Clueless" have mined rich merriment from the travails of spoiled brats, "Material Girls" isn't in their league, let alone the same ballpark. Indeed, the lead characters, who whine about having gone "from Tiffany to Target in one single night" and plaintively ask, "Where's a spa when you need one?" are two of the most annoying figures seen onscreen in recent years.

Huston somehow manages to maintain her dignity, and Brent Spiner livens things up a little bit as an unctuous exec. Lukas Haas displays a nice understated quality as a love interest, while such performers as Maria Conchito Alonso, Obba Babatunde and Faith Prince are utterly wasted.

As for the Duff sisters, well, their work here only inspires hope that their 15-minute clock has started ticking.

Duff's Mother Sued
Teen singer/actress Hilary Duff's mother is being sued for breach of contract by a Canadian clothing firm, alleging Susan Duff violated an exclusive merchandising deal for her daughter's fashion line. NTD Apparel filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court this week, claiming Susan had performed "unlawful, unfair and deceptive business practices" while agreeing sales deals for the Cheaper By The Dozen star's Stuff By Hilary Duff range. The suit also names the family's entertainment company Rafter H as a defendant, alleging they violated an exclusive merchandising agreement with NTD by agreeing side deals with rival retail firms. In response, Rafter H told the New York Daily News the suit was "without merit" and are planning to sue NTD for using low-quality goods in the Stuff collection.

The network will develop a starring vehicle for Duff for the 2004-05 season, most likely a domestic comedy a la Family Ties. The teenager's mother, Susan Duff, will executive produce. Duff's Mom Takes on Suspected Stalker
Hilary Duff
Teen singer Hilary Duff's mother was so infuriated when she thought a man was stalking her famous daughter, she pursued him in a late-night car chase through Los Angeles. The chase took place just days after someone tried to break into the family home through a basement window, increasing Susan Duff's instincts to keep her offspring safe. She says, "Enough is enough. There has been repeated incidents, and I wanted them to stop." One day, a man Susan believed to be her daughter's stalker had been sitting in a parked car outside the Duff home in Toluca Lake for several hours early on August 5 when Hilary's 18-year old sister Haylie spotted the car. With 15-year-old Hilary, ex-girlfriend of pop star Aaron Carter, and Haylie in tow, Susan stormed out of the house to confront the man. When he took off, she got into her car with her two children and chased him through Toluca Lake for 50 minutes. The man finally stopped at his own home and called the police. He eventually explained his actions to the lawmen. Susan notes, "He said he had been at our house because of his 16-year-old daughter. But his daughter wasn't with him." Los Angeles police say the man was investigated and cleared of any wrongdoing.

Murray to play Duff's prince in 'Cinderella'
Chad Michael Murray, who starred as the Lone Ranger in the recent WB Network telefilm of the same name, will star opposite Hilary Duff in Warner Bros. Pictures/Gaylord Films' Cinderella Story. The project is set to go into production June 30 with Mark Rosman at the helm and studio-based Dylan Sellers producing with Clifford Werber and Gaylord's Hunt Lowry. Duff toplines the Clueless-meets-Cinderella story, a modern-day comedy set in Southern California's San Fernando Valley. The tale revolves around a young and slightly dorky high school student who goes through a transformation, becoming one of the hottest girls in school. Murray would play her love interest. Warners creative executive Alysia Cotter brought the project into the studio and will oversee. Duff's mother, Susan Duff, will receive a co-executive producer credit. Signing Murray to the film shows synergy at work between the Warner TV and film divisions. In addition to his work on the WB's Lone Ranger, Murray was a recurring on the network's Dawson's Creek and The Gilmore Girls. He will next star in the WB midseason replacement series One Tree Hill. Murray is repped by CAA, Bonnie Liedtke and Simmonds Management.

Duff's Mother: Disney Didn't Respect Hilary
Hilary Duff
Actress Hilary Duff left the Walt Disney Company because, according to her mother, they "weren't feeling the love." Disney and the 15-year-old actress announced they were "going their separate ways" last month, following failed talks over the direction of Duff's career, according to a spokeswoman for the entertainment corporation. But Hilary's mother Susan Duff says, "They weren't giving Hilary the respect she deserved." The actress has starred in the hugely popular Disney Channel sitcom Lizzie McGuire since 2001 and the spin-off film, The Lizzie McGuire Movie has grossed about $40 million since it opened on May 2. But negotiations broke down last month between Disney and Duff's representatives over how much money she would receive for a Lizzie McGuire Movie sequel and a new series that would follow her character to high school. Duff reportedly had received offers of six figures per episode from at least two competing TV networks, while ABC reportedly offered $35,000 an episode. As for the movie sequel, the two sides couldn't agree on terms of a $500,000 bonus for the young star.
