There are certain companies known for producing and/or distributing horror content that consistently push the boundaries of the genre. Studios like A24, Neon, and IFC have developed loyal followings by backing films that range from mainstream thrill rides to daring, experimental nightmares. Whether it's a low-budget indie gem or a genre-defying spectacle, these companies have earned their place as reliable names for horror fans chasing their next jolt of fear.
At the beginning of this year, Neon kicked off its 2025 horror slate with a brand-new title releasing in theaters. This film had previously premiered at the Sundance Film Festival back in January 2024, but only those at the festival were able to experience it firsthand. Fortunately, Neon saw the movie's potential and acquired its distribution rights for $5 million. The indie powerhouse would then release the film in U.S. theaters in January 2025. New Jersey is on the rise.
For years, the state had let opportunity slip through its fingers when it came to film and TV production after Gov. Chris Christie suspended the state’s Film and Digital Media Tax Credit Program in 2010. But in 2018, his successor, Phil Murphy, reinstated the credit, offering up to 30% of eligible expenses and up to 35% in certain more remote areas; over time he expanded the money available, offered incentives for productions meeting diversity criteria and locked in the program through 2039 to provide stability for content producers.
Last year, the revitalization continued when the New Jersey Motion Picture and Television Commission named Jon Crowley executive director. Crowley spent decades in the television industry and has been an elected official in his New Jersey hometown.

Steven Soderbergh’s stripped down ghost story, ‘Presence,’ is an impressive evolution and subversion of the popular low-budget found-footage ghost trend.
“My boy…he came back to save you.”
Ghost stories and poltergeists are such a fascinating horror subgenre that have the power to really connect and get under the audience’s skin in a way that’s not possible with other monsters. The idea of an unfulfilled spirit that can’t – or won’t – move on is easier for many people to buy into than zombies, vampires, or a living doll. Ghosts exist out of time and have the potential to know everything, but also nothing. It’s a poetically beautiful tragedy that makes ghosts such rich – and misunderstood – material for horror movies.
There’s a certain power to ghost movies and how they operate as the ultimate voyeur stories, especially when the spirit and the camera become one.

Based on Soderbergh’s personal experiences, ‘Presence’ promises a unique and immersive ghost story that explores the intricacies of the human psyche. Ghost stories have always intrigued humanity. Whether it is an urban legend such as La Llorona that terrifies children across all throughout the entire Mexican country or the deified spirits that were the Cihuateteo in Aztec Mythology. Every culture in human history had its belief in some sort of afterlife, and therefore, its belief in those who were not able to go to the afterlife being stuck in our realm to the end of times. From the famed ‘Ghostbusters’ franchise to the classic horror film ‘The Shining’. The ghost genre has seen many interpretations and evolutions across the years. Yet, as the genre rose in popularity, the plots and storylines began to feel somewhat repetitive and “cliché”, with a slight few sliding away from the established norm. Starring Lucy Liu as Rebekah Payne,...

Please note that this article contains spoilers for Neon's 2025 horror movie, Presence.
Over the last few years, one horror trend has subtly been on the rise. Horror movies that are told from the perspective of the slasher killer or the ghost haunting a house have become steadily popular in recent years. This isn't a brand-new trope by any means. Plenty of movies have explored this idea in some way or another, even if only for a scene or two, but lately, filmmakers have been dedicated to telling the entire story from the perspective of the character who would traditionally be a villain or antagonist.
Neon's newest horror film, Presence (2025), follows this trend to the letter. Presence follows a family of four as they move into...

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Presence. When Rebekah (Lucy Liu) and Chris (Chris Sullivan) move into a new home with their teenage children, Tyler (Eddy Maday) and Chloe (Callina Liang), Chloe feels something. Her family writes it off as a trauma response to the death of her best friend, Nadia, but the audience knows Chloe is right. Stephen Soderbergh’s Presence takes a step outside the haunted house genre with the bold choice to tell the story from the ghost's point of view. The camera moves – and sometimes breathes – as the presence itself. Despite this subversion of form, the film relies on an old and tasteless trope.

Before his career-altering castings on This Is Us and Stranger Things, Chris Sullivan’s biggest break came courtesy of one Steven Soderbergh. In 2013, the Palm Springs-born, Sacramento-raised actor joined Soderbergh’s period medical drama, The Knick, in the series regular role of shifty ambulance driver Tom Cleary. A decade later, in the midst of the SAG-AFTRA strike and Sullivan’s 2023 run on Broadway, the prolific filmmaker called his former collaborator to offer him his most notable film role to date in an inventive supernatural thriller known as Presence. (Soderbergh acquired an interim agreement so the $2 million self-funded enterprise could film during the strike. Neon then purchased the rights out of Sundance for $5 million.)

Breaking through to the other side and witnessing things from a ghostly plane isn't new for the horror genre. Films like "Haunter," "The Others," and "The Sixth Sense," to name a few, have all provided viewers a glimpse into the afterlife. Director Steven Soderbergh's new horror film "Presence" (check out our review here) offers a different kind of supernatural experience, as we view the entire story from a first-person paranormal perspective, featuring a ghost that only reveals itself after a death in the final act.
Early in "Presence," a medium visiting the house explains that the afterlife doesn't follow the same rules of time as ours, and the spirit is unaware of who they are or when they exist. This sets up the twist that the ghost is, in fact, Tyler Payne (Eddy Maday...

In this age of streaming entertainment, viewers' criteria for what qualifies as a multiplex-worthy movie has changed dramatically. Generally, a film has to be a four-quadrant tentpole or a family-friendly animated piffle (preferably with a toy or video game tie-in) to get people out of their houses. Comedies are no longer a safe play, nor are adult-skewing dramas. Small-scale films in general are typically viewed on the couch as a second-screen distraction. Horror movies, however, are typically an exception.
Whether they're big studio productions like "Nosferatu," "A Quiet Place: Day One," and "Alien: Romulus," or more modestly scaled indie efforts like "Longlegs," "Terrifier 3," and "Talk to Me," moviegoers (mostly of the younger variety) will show up on opening weekend provided the hook is well-baited. Spoiler Alert: This article discusses the plot and ending of “Presence,” now playing in theaters.
As with many ghost stories, the presence in “Presence” has a good reason to haunt its house.
After watching on as the Payne family turns against one another, the Presence that drifts around their newly purchased, bougie abode makes a grand gesture to save its tattered residents. Looming above as the drugged Chloe (Callina Liang) is about to be murdered by her new boyfriend Ryan (West Mulholland), the ghost swoops downstairs to awaken her brother Tyler (Eddy Maday) from his own roofie-induced slumber. In a possessed rush, Tyler storms up the stairwell, down the corridor and enters the bedroom to tackle Ryan, who has already killed one of Chloe’s friends and staged it as an overdose. The Mel Gibson-directed Flight Risk is flying to an $11 million to $12 million opening at the domestic box office, according to Friday returns. If those estimates hold, the action-thriller film will come in on the higer end of expectations, or even ahead.
It’s the first film Gibson — whom Trump has named one of his ambassadors to Hollywood — has directed since 2016’s Hacksaw Ridge.
From Lionsgate, Flight Risk stars Mark Wahlberg as a pilot transporting an Air Marshal (Michelle Dockery) accompanying a mob-connected witness (Topher Grace) to trial. As they cross the Alaskan wilderness, tensions soar and trust is tested, as not everyone on board is who they seem — including the pilot.
Reviewers haven’t taken to the modestly budgeted movie. Ditto for audiences, which slapped it with a C CinemaScore.

In 1989, both Steven Soderbergh and “Presence” screenwriter David Koepp had movies at the Sundance Film Festival. While the two didn’t meet that year — Koepp was not in attendance for his “Bad Influence,” the lowkey thriller by future “L.A. Confidential” filmmaker Curtis Hanson, as Soderbergh took his “Sex, Lies and Videotape” into the history books of American independent cinema — their professional lives would continue to cross.
Koepp at one point tried to get Soderbergh to direct “Death Becomes Her,” a project Soderbergh said would be “too hard.” Then, after Koepp had subsequently become one of the most prolific and profitable screenwriters in Hollywood history with “Jurassic Park,” “Mission: Impossible” and more, the pair met for a drink.
Koepp presented an idea he had about an agoraphobic young woman whose job is to listen to recordings and one day – surprise! – she hears a murder. Soderbergh encouraged Koepp to write it, and every six months or so,...

The latest collaboration from director Steven Soderbergh and writer David Koepp is “Presence,” a haunted house movie set in the home of an average suburban family (led by Lucy Liu and Soderbergh’s “The Knick” star Chris Sullivan). What could be a typical scary movie is elevated by the aesthetic choice to tell the story from the ghost’s point-of-view, so you see it drifting around the house, listening in on conversations between members of the family and occasionally letting itself be known by shaking things or knocking down objects.
And since the movie is told from the ghost’s perspective, that leaves an inherent mystery at the center of “Presence:” who is the ghost?
Read on for more on this, but a very massive spoiler warning should be issued first. Don’t read this without seeing the movie first. Watch it and come on back. It’ll still be...

The following contains spoilers for Presence, in theaters now.
Horror tends to be at its best when it’s blended with other genres. Horror comedies and sci-fi horror movies have both blossomed into full blown subgenres. Yet just when it seems there's nothing else that could possibly be combined with some great scares, Steven Soderbergh’s Presence spices up the genre by tinkering with its form and tone.
Presence centers on Chloe (played by Callina Liang), a high schooler reeling from the unexpected loss of her best friend Nadia. Alongside her parents, Rebecca and Chris (Lucy Liu and Chris Sullivan), and her brother Tyler (Eddy Maday), she moves into a new home -- one where the family’s every move is being watched. Presence is a film for slow-burn horror lovers, marrying a nearly tragic family drama with an eerie meditation on grief and a topical edge to give audiences a unique experience.

I love all things horror, but I’ve never been someone to seek out hauntings in real life. Precisely because I’ve seen so many scary movies and know not to mess with that stuff — I’m not going to be the person shouting about how not scared I am right before some creature/demon/ghost slaughters/possesses/terrifies me. Still, when the opportunity arose to see the new horror film “Presence” at an actual haunted house, I was intrigued.
“Presence” is the new film from impossible-to-pigeonhole filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, whose career shows it’s not just performers who have range. He’s made dramas, comedies, heist flicks, thrillers, biopics — but never a straight up horror film before. (The closest would probably be 2018’s stalker flick “Unsane” or 2011’s eerily prescient “Contagion.”) In some ways, “Presence” is familiar: a seemingly average family moves into a house where they are watched by an unknown entity.

It’s an experiment that shouldn’t work. A feature film shot entirely through the point of view of a ghost who watches a family of four move into a large suburban home and over time witnesses their most intimate and disturbing moments, as a supernatural mystery begins to bubble beneath the surface.
Director Steven Soderbergh, better than anyone, laid out why a fully Pov camera doesn’t work for narrative storytelling when discussing first-person VR movies back in 2022. Said Soderbergh, “[That] there’s no Pov and reverse angle on a character who’s experiencing this is hugely limiting. That is how we engage with visual stories, is to watch the expressions of the characters so that we can read the emotions of what we’re experiencing.”

Director Steven Soderbergh comes out of self-imposed retirement once again for this engaging and effective ghost story, shot in a series of single takes. From the haunted house-style set-up, audiences might be expecting something along the lines of the Paranormal Activity franchise, but Soderbergh has something else in mind.
Presence begins in a renovated, 100-year-old home, in the leafy suburbs of an unnamed city. The titular presence is a ghost, represented by the subjective, point-of-view camerawork. In the opening scenes, the presence looks out of the window and then goes down the stairs as a late-arriving realtor shows a family – mother Rebekah (Lucy Liu), father Chris (Chris Sullivan) and teenage kids Chloe and Tyler around the property.
Shortly afterwards, the family are all moved in, and Chloe becomes convinced...

Steven Soderbergh offers us a gripping family saga masquerading as a ghost story. Here’s our Presence review.
Judging from the trailers and the marketing, you’d expect the first of two movies directed by Steven Soderbergh gracing our screens in 2025 to be a horror film. It certainly fits the bill on paper: a family moves into a new house where a supernatural entity roams the rooms and stairs, observing the new residents’ lives and occasionally dropping a shelf or two.
Yet, I can’t say I was scared once during Presence. I was compelled and glued to my seat, but not for the usual reasons while watching a horror film.
Rebekah (Lucy Liu) and Chris (Chris Sullivan) move their two kids, Chloe (Callina Liang) and Tyler (Eddy Maday) to a new house. Chloe is grieving the loss of her best friend, Nadia, and begins to sense a presence in the house.

In the new Steven Soderbergh thriller Presence, Julia Fox is a real estate lawyer who sells a home in the suburbs to a family haunted by a ghost, or a "presence."
It turns out the Uncut Gems actress and model knows a little something about the subject matter. She was on Late Night with Seth Meyers promoting the film and shared that she lives with a ghost in her home.
"I actually have a ghost that lives in my house right now. I feel like I talk about her a lot, and I feel so bad. I am, like, putting her on blast. Like, I do not know if she wants me to talk about her! Her name is Beauty, and she came with the house; she did not follow me there," she said.

In Presence, the new haunted house horror film by Steven Soderbergh and writer David Koepp (Jurassic World: Rebirth), Julia Fox plays a real estate lawyer who unwittingly sells a family a home plagued by a sadistic ghost. But according to the actress, not only are ghosts real, she lives with one in perfect harmony.
In an appearance on Late Night with Seth Myers (via Entertainment Weekly), Fox revealed that when she initially purchased her home, she had no idea it was haunted. "It was funny: It begins like any ghost story. I felt a pull toward this house, and it was a full moon, and then I was like, 'That's it. I'm getting the house...'"

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review for the new film “Presence,” directed by Steven Soderbergh (“Ocean’s 11” series) and is the story of a family that experiences a spectral being within their just-moved-into rehabbed home. In theaters on January 24th.
The narrative involves a literal presence, a spirit watching over a house that a family of four moves into. Mother Rebecca (Lucy Liu) is edgy and is show often drinking the hard stuff, while preferring her teen son Tyler (Eddie Maday) over her often troubled teen daughter Chloe (Callina Liang). Dad Chris (Chris Sullivan) is always pushing to get Chloe some therapy help, especially after she feels the presence in the house, and connects it to her bestie Nadia, who had recently died of drug overdose. Rebecca is resistant, but as the bumps in the night grow stronger, and psychic Cece (Julia Fox) is consulted, the family...

You know the Tolstoy quote about all happy families being the same, but “every unhappy family is unhappy in their own way?” The quartet at the center of Steven Soderbergh’s ghost story Presence has refined their own particular brand of dysfunction to perfection. The mom, Rebecca (Lucy Liu), is a first-class control freak, has become involved in some shady financial dealings, and dotes on her teenage son, Tyler (Eddy Maday), in a way that would make Freud’s head explode. He’s a champion swimmer, and she has her...

Steven Soderbergh has never made a horror movie, and certainly not of the ghostly, haunted variety. Materializing quietly into theaters a year after its 2024 Sundance premiere, Steven Soderbergh’s “Presence” marks the start of yet another prolific year for the famous multitasker with an affinity for digital cinema. But while the upcoming “Black Bag” seems poised to return Soderbergh to the more straightforward, populist side of his career—see “Ocean’s Eleven,” “Traffic,” or “Haywire”—one of the first 2024 premieres to be booted into 2025 finds the filmmaker operating in the other distinct lane of his career: that of giddy formal experimentation.
Unfortunately, as tends to be the case in this post-“retirement” era of his career, Soderbergh’s latest grasp at breaking new stylistic ground comes in the form of a film more impressed with the audacity of its own existence than pressed withmaking that existence meaningful. Though “Presence” is not one of Soderbergh’s myriad iPhone-shot recent features, the film may as well be little more...

Although it premiered at Sundance almost a year ago, Steven Soderbergh’s Presence is finally making its way to theaters, and audiences may well find themselves surprised by it both formally and narratively. A refreshing spin on a familiar genre, Presence manages to perfectly tread the line between challenging audiences and delivering satisfying entertainment.
Presence Review
Presence follows a family who, after moving to a new house in the suburbs following a tragedy, begin to believe that they are being haunted by an unseen presence. At the core of the film is a relatively standard haunted house story, but this is only the framework upon which something much more intriguing and complex is built.
Like much of Soderbergh’s recent output, Presence is as much an experiment in form as it is anything else. He shot the movie using Dslr cameras as opposed to the typical high-grade professional camera equipment,...

Steven Soderbergh's Presence is an effective, efficient throwback to classic suspenseful thrillers, centered around very modern themes, but with entirely fresh camera techniques. Soderbergh's penchant for trying out new things, putting the camera in different types of places, and weaving those experiments and concepts into plots that work is once again on full display. Presence is also tightly wound. Like a postmodern Alfred Hitchcock, Soderbergh takes viewers into the haunting circumstances of a thriller without doing a lot of heavy lifting.

Steven Soderbergh has never been one to shy away from formal experimentation. Whether he is working within the studio system or independently, shooting on 16mm film or an iPhone, innovation is his trademark. His next audacious venture arrives in the form of Presence, which was shot in secret in the summer of 2023 and finds the filmmaker reinventing the paranormal thriller through an original point of view — in more ways than one.
Soderbergh acts as his own cinematographer, and his camera assumes the first-person perspective of a ghost, floating through the hallways of a spacious, suburban home. Matriarch Rebecca (Lucy Liu) and her nuclear family have moved in, and the spirit watches on as a seemingly idyllic unit begins to show its cracks. Captured in hypnotic long takes and wide angles, Rebecca fawns over her star-athlete son Tyler (Eddy Maday) while her daughter Chloe (Callina Liang) languishes in isolation. In the next room,...

It’s there before the family even moves in. It witnesses the family’s most intimate uncomfortable moments. It navigates the family’s new house at supernatural speed. It pays unusual attention to Chloe, the teenage girl who’s neither her mother’s nor her brother’s favorite. It wants — no, it needs —
something. And as time goes on, the presence pieces together how it might accomplish its goal. An
unusual, unnerving, and emotional thriller from writer David Koepp and director Steven Soderbergh.

Steven Soderbergh’s unique-sounding horror Presence releases in the UK next week, and we have a new trailer to stoke our anticipation.
A new Steven Soderbergh film is always a treat, and we’ve lucky enough to have had plenty of them in the last few years. One of the things that make Soderbergh’s films a joy to watch are his unique takes on genre tropes – and Presence, his forthcoming horror, looks to make good on that approach. As the trailer showcases, the film is shot entirely from the perspective of the spectre that haunts the residents of a suburban house.
Releasing in the UK on the 24th January, the story is framed from the perspective of ‘a supernatural entity that stalks an ordinary suburban family.’ The film was first screened at Sundance early this year, before being picked picked up for distribution by Neon. The boutique distributor has...

"Will leave you gasping for air." "A spellbinding horror film." Neon has debuted a final official trailer for Steven Soderbergh's ghost story horror film Presence - following up the main official trailer released last fall. Ready to open in theaters in just a few weeks after a long wait. This originally premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival one year ago and is a chilling flip on the haunted house concept - it's a shot-in-one-location thriller about a ghost's presence inside a house. A family moves into a suburban house and becomes convinced they’re not alone. The rest of the story must not be spoiled - wait until you watch it in theaters to find out what happens next. Presence stars Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, Callina Liang, Julia Fox, Eddy Maday, and West Mulholland. It's a chilling, very unsettling film with a smooth camera following a ghost that drifts...

Neon has shared the official trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s new horror film Presence, opening in theaters on January 24, 2025. In the film, a family moves into a suburban house and becomes convinced they’re not alone.
With a runtime of 85 minutes, Presence was rated R by the Motion Picture Association (MPA) for violence, drug material, language, sexuality and teen drinking.
It’s there before the family even moves in. It witnesses the family’s most intimate uncomfortable moments. It navigates the family’s new house at supernatural speed. It pays unusual attention to Chloe, the teenage girl who’s neither her mother’s nor her brother’s favorite.
It wants — no, it needs — something. And as time goes on, the presence pieces together how it might accomplish its goal. The movie is an unusual, unnerving and emotional thriller from writer David Koepp and director Steven Soderbergh.
Principal photography for the film took place in Cranford,...

At the start of 2024, JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray got to check out the Sundance Film Festival premiere of director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter David Koepp’s ghost story Presence, and in his 7/10 review (which you can read Here), he described the film as “a supernatural tale that’s light on horror but heavy on heart.” A wider audience will have the chance to see the movie now that we have switched over to our 2025 calendars, as Neon is planning to give Presence a limited theatrical release on January 24th – and with that date swiftly approaching, the film’s final trailer has now dropped online. You can check it out in the embed above.
