Marvel Studios’ Blade reboot, featuring Mahershala Ali as the vampire hunter, remains in active development despite years of challenges, according to the most recent report. The project, aiming for a possible 2028 release, has faced numerous setbacks since its announcement.
Back in July 2019, Marvel president Kevin Feige introduced Ali as Blade during San Diego Comic-Con, thrilling fans with the prospect of the Day-Walker’s return.
Ali, known for his role as Cottonmouth in Luke Cage, even voiced the character in the 2021 Eternals. However, the excitement has been tempered by repeated delays.
The project has seen a revolving door of talent. Directors Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange were attached at different points, but both have since left, with Demange reportedly exiting in March 2025 due to difficulties in collaboration.

The long-delayed Blade reboot is still alive at Marvel Studios, but it’s been anything but smooth sailing.
According to recent reports, the movie is still in development and could finally hit theaters in 2028, though fans have heard that before.
The new Blade film was first announced back in 2019 when Mahershala Ali joined the project. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige made the announcement during San Diego Comic-Con that year. Ali, who previously played Cottonmouth in Luke Cage, was excited to take on the role. He even made a brief voice cameo in Eternals in 2021.

Since then, however, the project has faced delay after delay. Directors and writers have come and gone. Bassam Tariq was once attached, then Yann Demange stepped in, only to reportedly exit the project in March 2025 due to allegedly being difficult to work with.

It's hard to think of another Marvel Studios project that has struggled as much behind the scenes as the upcoming Blade film. First announced alongside several post-Endgame projects in July 2019, Blade has since had a revolving door of writers and directors, each leaving the project due to one creative difference or another. Filmmakers like Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange would come and go, with the release and production start dates changing in perpetuity. As of March 2025, development on the film has been paused, with no further updates regarding when it can be expected. Its place in the MCU timeline is now in jeopardy, especially as the event films Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars get closer with each passing day.

So are we. Marvel Studios announced Blade at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019. I’ll repeat that. Marvel Studios announced Blade at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019. That was six years ago! Every other project Marvel teased on stage that day, including Eternals, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, has already been released. While speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, David S. Goyer expressed his confusion at Marvel’s inability to get Blade off the ground.
“I think Blade is a relatively simple story. It’s not complicated. I always think about when you embark on a movie like this, you have to distil down what is the promise of the movie.” Goyer said. “The promise of a new Blade is that it should have insane ass kicking, it should be pretty scary, might be R-Rated, it doesn’t have to be,...

The long-awaited Blade reboot, featuring Mahershala Ali as the iconic vampire hunter, is facing significant hurdles. Announced in 2019 at San Diego Comic-Con, the project initially sparked excitement among Marvel fans. However, nearly six years later, the film remains in limbo with no release date in sight.
Marvel’s journey to bring Blade into the MCU has been rocky. The studio has cycled through six writers and two directors, with Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange both departing the project.
In March 2025, Marvel officially paused development, removing Blade from its release schedule. The latest script attempt came from writer Eric Pearson in mid-2024, but progress stalled soon after.

Marvel’s Blade reboot is going through one of the roughest developments in the studio’s history. It’s been nearly six years since the film was announced, and yet, there’s still no clear sign of when it will actually get made. What started out as an exciting return of the vampire-hunting superhero has turned into a frustrating waiting game.
Mahershala Ali was announced as the new Blade back in 2019, during San Diego Comic-Con. The casting got fans hyped, and Marvel seemed confident about the project.
But ever since then, it’s been nothing but delays, rewrites, and director changes. The movie has already gone through six different writers and is now looking for its third director. As of March 2025, Marvel has officially paused development.
David S. Goyer, the writer behind the original Blade trilogy starring Wesley Snipes, recently shared his thoughts about the situation on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

David S. Goyer recently told ScreenRant that he is more than ready to answer the call should Kevin Feige’s Marvel Studios need him to write Mahershala Ali’s long-delayed “Blade” movie. Goyer is no stranger to the comic book vampire hunter, having written all three movies in Wesley Snipes’ original “Blade” trilogy. He even stepped in to direct 2004’s “Blade: Trinity.”
“I would. I’ve always loved the character and I love him,” Goyer said when asked if he would write Marvel’s “Blade” reboot for the MCU. “I’ve been sitting on the sidelines wondering, ‘What in the world is going on? Why is it taking so long?’ Because I’m a huge Marvel fan myself, and I’ve just been totally puzzled.”
Marvel originally announced its “Blade” movie with Ali in July 2019, but development has been rocky as several writers and directors have come and gone over the years.

One former Blade writer says he knows how to fix the MCU’s troubled vampire movie that has undergone so much turmoil it's been removed from the release schedule entirely. With no director currently attached and only Mahershala Ali and Mia Goth remaining in the cast, things are looking bleak for Blade at the moment. It’s been more than 20 years since Wesley Snipes wrapped up his Blade trilogy, which was penned by David S. Goyer, who also directed Blade: Trinity. Goyer recently caught up with ScreenRant at the premiere for his new Apple TV+ series, Murderbot, and when asked what Marvel Studios needs to do to crack the code of a successful Blade movie, he simply said, "Give me a call." Goyer was also asked if he would pen the script for the MCU’s Blade if he was asked:

Director Ryan Coogler is riding high with his breakout horror movie’s success. In a recent premiere of his vampire-themed movie Sinners, Coogler was asked a playful yet pointed question: who’s his favorite Black vampire? His answer wasn’t exactly shocking but it sent the internet into a frenzy. The reaction was instant, hilarious, and oddly satisfying.
In other news, Marvel Studios has been trying to resurrect Blade for years, but the path has been anything but smooth. And suddenly, after Coogler’s witty reply, one thing is clear, if Marvel boss Kevin Feige is still looking for someone to rescue the long-delayed Blade reboot, he may not need to look any further than the man who once already helmed a Marvel blockbuster.

Blade 4 continues to experience a slew of bad luck. The film took another hit when Grammy-winning musician Flying Lotus revealed that he would not be composing music for the film.

"I guess we are so far from it even being a possibility now. But, yeah, I was signed on to write music for the new Blade movie before it fell [through]," he wrote. In 2019, Marvel announced they would do a reboot of the popular “Blade” character in the MCU starring Mahershala Ali. Over the years, the film was pushed back due to Covid and then the Hollywood strikes, and now the rumors indicate the film is shelved or canceled.
Originally, Kevin Feige said the film would release on November 3, 2023, with filming beginning in early October 2022 and wrapping in January 2o23. Eventually, the film was given a November 2025 release date, but that too has been removed.
Throughout the production of “Blade” a parade of people associated with the film dropped out, including Bassam Tariq, Yann Demange, Damián García, and several different writers.
Recently, there has been discussion and rumors indicating that the film has been shelved for now.
More evidence suggests “Blade” has been cancelled.

Though Blade was removed from Marvel Studios' slate late last year, we had heard that the movie was simply delayed and would eventually move forward. Unfortunately, this no longer seems to be the case.
Despite recent reports that the MCU reboot was still on track to commence production in the UK at some point later this year, insider Daniel Richtman claims to have confirmed that Blade has now been put "on indefinite hold."
Backing up this claim is recording artist/DJ Flying Lotus, aka Steven Ellison, who has taken to X to reveal that he had signed on to write the music for the project before things fell through - and he does not sound optimistic about the film getting back on track.

It’s been a while since we’ve gotten any official updates on Marvel’s planned Blade reboot movie, which was originally announced way back in 2019. While Wesley Snipes did reprise his iconic role as New Line’s Daywalker in Deadpool & Wolverine last year, the character’s official introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe still seems to be no closer to reality.
It’s no secret that the brand new Blade movie has been bumped all over the release calendar the last several years, and it’s currently without a date at all after getting pulled from its most recent theatrical release date of November 7, 2025. Not helping is that the movie is without a director at the moment, with Yann Demange (“Lovecraft Country”) departing the project in the wake of Bassam Tariq (Mogul Mowgli) exiting the film back in 2022.

Marvel's Blade reboot was pulled from its release schedule in 2024. Before this, the film's production cited directors exiting the project, major delays, and massive shifts towards Marvel's other upcoming releases. While this Mahershala Ali-led superhero movie's details were shrouded in mystery, a former production staff member revealed where this movie would have taken place in the MCU timeline.
Blade's former costume designer, Ruth E. Carter, revealed in an interview that Marvel's Blade would have occurred in the 1920s and would have told a period piece about a vampire. Unfortunately, production was shut down due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA and Writers strike, and she, along with other production staff, was stuck in limbo. Fortunately, her research was not wasted, as Ryan Coogler's 2025 feature, Sinners, has a similar setting.
In 2019, Kevin Feige revealed that Blade was in development and would have the two-time Oscar-winning actor to star in the feature.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe's Blade 4 continues to be little more than a concept as the long-gestating sequel remains in limbo. Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter offers new intel into what the ill-fated Blade reboot was going to look like, confirming it had a vintage setting similar to her latest feature-length project, Sinners.
Speaking on the John Campea Show, Carter, known for her award-winning work in the Black Panther film series, was the costume designer for the in-development Blade 4 after Marvel announced it in 2019. Carter confirmed reports that the Blade remake was set in the 1920s, sticking to its comic book roots, as half-man, half-vampire Eric Brooks was born during London's Great Depression in 1929. “I was prepping Blade for Marvel, and it was a 1920s Blade story,” Carter said. However, when the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike compromised Blade 4's production, she found herself "in limbo," becoming one of several names to exit the project.

Delroy Lindo has spoken publicly about his departure from Marvel’s long-delayed Blade reboot, describing the production as one that “just went off the rails” following what he described as initially inclusive and collaborative discussions.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly while promoting his role in Sinners, Lindo said he was approached early in the film’s development and encouraged by the conversations he had with the creative team. “When Marvel came to me, they seemed to be really interested in my input,” he said. “In the various conversations I had with producers, the writer, the director at the time, it was all leading into being very inclusive.”

The Blade MCU project has been trying to ice skate uphill for a number of years now!
Mahershala Ali was announced as the star of Blade all the way back at San Diego Comic-Con 2019. Since then, the MCU project has suffered a number of reported setbacks, draining several directors and screenwriters in the project's quest to satisfy Ali and Marvel Studios executives.
Since 2019, there have been 4+ directors attached to the project and at least 5 different versions of the script.
However, one sticking piece has been the rumored setting of the film, which was said to take place in the 1920s, which was first rumored back in September 2022. And the latest rumor from January 2024 speculated that the film was still set in the '20s.

Poor old Blade. MCU fans have been eager to see Mahershala Ali portray the Day Walker on the big screen since the movie was announced way back in 2019. While the movie itself is stuck in development purgatory, fans finally have their first look at what Ali could look like as Blade... kind of. His live-action debut might still be a ways off, but Ali's Blade has technically already debuted in the MCU, in the animated series, What If...?. A brief glimpse of the character was shown in the Season 3 finale, and the character is set to return in Marvel Zombies. Ahead of Zombies' release later this year, Marvel fans have their best look yet at Ali as Blade.

While this may not be the live-action look that we are all still waiting on pins and needles for, this Blade/Moon Knight hybrid variant is clearly inspired by the Oscar-winning actor, much more so than other What If…? Characters. What If…? Ali’s Blade as Moon Knight will also appear later this year in the animated series Marvel Zombies, which will be released on October 3.

For months and months, we were only getting bad and disheartening news about Marvel’s Blade, which would be entering the MCU more than 25 years after Wesley Snipes first brought the character to the big screen. Now, the bad news may be over…depending on your view of the movie. As it stands, it may be that Blade has been cancelled completely.
Multiple sources are reporting that Marvel has put Blade to rest after a string of screenwriters and directors circled, signed on and left the project. One key source this time around is The Playlist’s Rodrigo Perez, who posted a thread on X where he detailed what might really have been going behind the scenes that eventually led to Blade potentially – but not definitely – being dulled.
For starters, Perez noted that the news that Chad Stahelski signing on as director was false. However, Mashershala Ali is still playing Blade,...

Following several delays and production struggles, Marvel Studios is now reportedly seeking John Wick director Chad Stahelski for the long-troubled Blade reboot, starring Mahershala Ali.
Once one of the most highly anticipated additions to the MCU, the film has been stuck in development hell for nearly six years since its announcement at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con. Now, the studio is hoping Stahelski can finally bring the project to life, an exciting possibility that could be exactly what the movie needs.

The Blade reboot could be led by the director of another franchise with a badass lead character as the ill-fated Marvel Cinematic Universe looks to get back on track. Reports claim John Wick franchise helmer Chad Stahelski is the latest filmmaker to take the reins of the long-gestating blockbuster.
According to Hollywood scooper Jeff Sneider, Marvel has enlisted Stahelski to become the Blade reboot's third director since its 2019 announcement. Michael Green and Eric Pearson penned the latest draft of the film, with Stahelski tapped to direct as he's set to helm the Henry Cavill-led Highlander reboot and potentially John Wick 5 at Lionsgate.
Stahelski was reportedly chosen after Marvel passed on another director to lead Blade 4. Cary Fukunaga, who directed the most recent James Bond entry, No Time to Die, was reportedly in line for the job late last year. However, Sneider claims Fukunaga's reputation may have cost him the job.

The fact that there was going to be a Blade reboot as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starring Mashershala Ali in the title role, came as a huge surprise when the announcement was made at the San Diego Comic-Con back in July of 2019… but we’re coming up on the six year anniversary of that announcement, and we still haven’t seen a new Blade movie. The closest we’ve gotten is Ali making a vocal cameo as the character at the end of Eternals back in 2021. Now, industry scooper Jeff Sneider of The InSneider has given us a bit of an update on the project, which we haven’t heard much about in the last year. During its time in development hell, Blade has gained and lost two directors: Bassam Tariq was the first and Yann Demange the second. Sneider reveals that the project has also passed through...

Marvel Studios has adapted many characters from the comics, no matter how minor or strange. From Doctor Strange to the Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man, it appears that no character was too difficult for Marvel to pull off into making a Marvel Cinematic Universe film. Yet one title has been a struggle — Blade. First announced at Comic-Con 2019, the movie has had more than three different release dates, with giving up its November 7, 2025, release date. As of this writing, there is no word on if or even when Blade will open in theaters, and it is approaching six years since the movie was first announced. For reference, that is the same amount of time from when Robert Downey Jr. was cast as Iron Man to the release of The Avengers.
The movie's delays have been cited as due to a number of issues behind the scenes, including changes to the script and a director change.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a big interconnected machine where every single movie and TV series takes part in the same world and builds towards the same narrative. As such, even the smallest of changes in the upcoming slate of projects could have dire repercussions that would need a lot of workarounds. Unfortunately for Disney, we've seen more and more of these unfortunate changes in plans over the last few years.
Kang is no longer the main antagonist of the Multiverse Saga, big projects such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness were released much later than originally anticipated, and no shortage of films have been reportedly scrapped at Marvel. But the worst part? A highly-anticipated movie that was announced almost six years ago could have been delayed until after the events of Avengers: Secret Wars. There goes our hope of seeing a beloved Marvel icon join Earth's Mightiest Heroes in their upcoming crossover.

Exclusive: Black Label Media has taken rights to Patrick Hoffman’s debut crime novel The White Van to develop as a feature for filmmaker Grant Singer.
Singer and author Hoffman will team to adapt the novel together.
The project reunites Singer with Black Label Media on the heels of Reptile, his chart-topping Netflix feature debut starring Benicio Del Toro, which the company also produced. That movie premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.
The White Van is a kinetic heist thriller following a troubled young woman who is lured into a criminal scheme that leaves her wanted for bank robbery and hunted by a corrupt cop who doesn’t want justice – but wants the money for himself. Evoking crime novelists like Dennis Lehane and gritty seventies films like Dog Day Afternoon, the line between good and evil blurs as criminals, cops, and hustlers collide in the unforgiving underbelly of San Francisco.

Marvel tapping Mahershala Ali for its troubled Blade movie was one of the biggest and most exciting announcements of 2019, and while the movie has yet to even begin production despite its original release date being in 2023, that hasn’t stopped Ali from finding roles in other projects. In a day swirling full of news, one of the more intriguing announcements via Deadline was that Ali would star in a new movie, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, which comes from director Bassam Tariq. Tariq had previously been attached to direct Marvel’s Blade movie starring Ali, but it was announced in 2022 that he had departed the project to be replaced by Yann Demange, who also left the project last year. Blade is currently without a release date or director.

One has to feel bad for Mahershala Ali. The guy was officially announced by Marvel as the new Blade way back in 2019, but six years later, not only has the film yet to go into production, but it also doesn’t have a finished script or a director, despite the film nearly going into production several times under the direction of Bassam Tariq and, later, Yann Demange. There have been loads of stories about the creative issues surrounding the film, with the consensus seeming to be that Marvel never had a handle on how to make a new film with the character. It was even rumoured at one point that Blade would essentially be a supporting player in a movie focused on female characters.
It’s hard not to think that the endless delays have impacted Ali’s career, with him having mostly stuck to voice roles in recent years...

Michael B. Jordan said in an interview with GQ magazine that he’s not concerned about the future of Marvel despite the franchise’s wobbly track record as of late. While the MCU hit a high last year with the record-breaking “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the year prior saw flops like “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “The Marvels” sink Marvel Studios to previously unforeseen lows. Jordan’s GQ cover was also published amid disappointing reviews for Marvel’s latest tentpole, “Captain America: Brave New World” (53% on Rotten Tomatoes from 133 reviews).
“[Marvel’s] doing great,” said Jordan, who is one of the MCU’s all-time great villains after playing Erik Killmonger in “Black Panther” and its sequel. “They’ll get it back.”

Blade fans may still be waiting for Mahershala Ali to slip into the leather and shades of the Daywalker for his first MCU appearance, but February will give them the chance to revisit the previous iteration of the vampire as the Wesley Snipes trilogy comes to Peacock on February 1.

Thomas Benski, a renowned producer best known for his achievements with programs such as Gangs of London, has launched Lumina, a new media firm to challenge established entertainment paradigms. The announcement is a huge milestone for Benski, who previously co-founded Pulse Films. This global company generated over $150 million in sales before leaving in 2021.
Lumina has obtained finance from significant investors such as Magnus Rausing’s Bfk, Charles Dorfman’s Dorfman Media Holdings, and Svs Holdings. A first-round investment is believed to be in the mid-eight figures. The company intends to revolutionize media production by emphasizing talent empowerment and intellectual property (IP) ownership.
“The media industry is undergoing rapid change,” Benski stated. “This is the perfect moment to create future-focused companies that give artists more control and autonomy.” Lumina’s strategy is based on a decentralized method to content creation, allowing creators to retain more ownership over their work while benefiting from long-term success.

As a wise Daywalker once kind of said, "Some studio presidents are always trying to ice skate uphill" — and it looks like Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige ain't ready to hang up his *ahem* blades just yet. After what can only be described as a tumultuous half-decade spent trying to get Marvel's Mahershala Ali Blade movie off the ground, it looked like plans to bring comics' premier vampire hunter to the MCU might've bitten the dust for good when Marvel Studios removed Blade from the release calendar last month. But at this past weekend's D23 Brazil fan event, Feige offered an optimistic update on Eric Cross Brooks' big-screen future to Brazilian outlet Omelete.
As translated and reported by Variety, when asked about the status of Mahershala Ali's long-in-the-works MCU project, Feige was quick to dispel the notion that a lack of release date meant that the movie had been shelved for good.

The reboot of the Wesley Snipes franchise was announced at Comic-Con 2019 with Oscar winner Mahershala Ali in the title role. However, there was a rotation of directors in Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange with a script that didn’t pass muster per Marvel. Mia Goth was also attached to play supervillian Lilith in the vampire slayer feature.
Feige’s statements were made in recently to the Brazilian entertainment website Omelete.
“We love the character, we love Mahershala’s version of him. And rest assured: whenever we change direction with a project, or are still trying to figure out how it fits into our schedule, we let the public know. You’re up to date on what’s going on. But I can tell you that...

Marvel announced five years ago, at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, they were inviting Blade into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a new reboot. Five years later, well, Marvel’s planned Blade MCU movie has still yet to even find its way in front of the cameras.
It’s no secret that the brand new Blade movie has been bumped all over the release calendar the last few years, and it’s currently without a date at all after getting pulled from its theatrical release date of November 7, 2025. Not helping is that the movie is without a director at the moment, with Yann Demange (“Lovecraft Country”) departing the project in the wake of Bassam Tariq (Mogul Mowgli) exiting the film back in 2022.
Studio President Kevin Feige reassured fans this weekend at the D23 Brazil 2024 event that Marvel is still planning to reboot Blade with star Mahershala Ali and bring the character into the MCU.

Marvel Studios recently took Mahershala Ali’s long-delayed “Blade” movie off its release calendar, but studio president Kevin Feige is telling fans not to worry about whether or not the iconic vampire hunter will find his way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Blade is coming, he promises.
“We are committed to Blade,” Feige told Omelete (via IGN) during the D23 Brazil 2024 event. “We love the character. We love Mahershala’s take on him. And rest assured: whenever we change direction with a project, or are still figuring out how it fits into our schedule, we let the audience know. You’re all up to date on what’s happening. But I can tell you that the character will indeed make it to the MCU.”
Marvel originally announced its “Blade” movie with Ali in July 2019, but development has been rocky as several writers and directors have come and gone over the years.

Mahershala Ali's Blade has hit several roadblocks on its way to theaters, leaving many fans to question when the Marvel Cinematic Universe film will debut. However, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige shared that the production was still making progress. In a new interview with Omelete, he stated:
We are committed to Blade. We love the character, we love Mahershalas version of him. And rest assured: whenever we change direction with a project, or are still trying to understand how it fits into our agenda, we inform the public. You guys are up to date with whats going on. But I can say that the character will indeed arrive in the MCU.
