French politician, born in the French overseas island in the Indian Ocean. He studied politics at "Sciences Po". Minister of Commerce form January to August 1976 (government of Prime Minister Jacques Chirac, then named Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance by President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing (from August 27, 1976 to May 25, 1981). Deputy of Rhône from April 1977 to June 2002 (after announcing he would retire after the 2002 elections), Mayor of Lyon from 1995 to 2001. Candidate for the 1988 Presidential elections (third with 16.54% of the votes, after François Mitterrand and Jacques Chirac). He received the Medal of "Officier de la Légion d'Honneur" from Jacques Chirac in April 20, 2003.
