The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is one of the most original entries in the series to date. Nintendo is obviously the primary force behind the enduring quality of The Legend of Zelda, but when the next game rolls around, I'd be happy to see it come from a specific alternate source. There's plenty of precedent for involving other parties in Zelda titles, most recently with the involvement of Grezzo. Although Grezzo has long been connected with Nintendo, it's an independent studio that developed several Zelda remakes before ultimately co-developing the new title The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.

I'm glad to see Nintendo placing some faith in Grezzo's ability to create new material, and based on my time with Echoes of Wisdom so far, I think it's definitely paying off. Grezzo isn't the only studio that could make a great Zelda game, however, and branching out even further could bring some exciting talents into the mix. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is a truly wonderful time that reminds us of why 2D Zelda games still matter, combining classic dungeon-crawling and item progression with the freedom brought forth by the series’ recent entries.

The unfortunate reality of the Zelda community, however, is that many continue to question Nintendo’s decision to go for a top-down, 2D game design with a toy-like aesthetic, considering these elements to be a step backward in the wake of the company’s other massive 3D open-world titles. More recently, the three-dimensional masterpieces Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom rekindled that same sense of wonder on Nintendo Switch. With The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, series developer Grezzo has crafted another tale that honors Zelda’s storied past while breaking new ground.

For the first time, players do not control valiant knight Link on his quest. Instead, Princess Zelda must rise to save her kingdom after unexpected events plunge the land into danger. With a magical staff and the power to summon ‘echoes’ gifted by her friend Tri, Zelda navigates Hyrule in highly creative ways.

She can place staircases of beds and tables to reach new heights or call monsters from echoes to aid her combat.
