The Santa Clauses Renewed for Season 2 at Disney+
Ayo Davis
Scott Calvin's reign on The Santa Clauses may not be ending as planned.

Disney+ made a shocking announcement this week:

The Santa Clauses will return for Season 2!

“This franchise has had a lasting impact for so many families, truly becoming part of their annual holiday traditions,” Disney Branded Television president Ayo Davis said in a statement.

“Bringing it back as a series has been a true gift, and I’m grateful to our producing partners at 20th Television and, of course, Tim Allen and team, that we have yet another reason to celebrate this holiday season.”

The news is somewhat surprising. Before the series was even picked up, reports stated it would be a limited series revival that would seemingly bring Tim Allen's alter ego full circle.

Now, it sounds like there will be plenty of Scott and his family on the agenda because we're getting a full-fledged second season.

Kal Penn on How Connection From Raunchy Comedy ‘Van Wilder’ Led to Part in Disney’s ‘The Santa Clauses’
Image
Click here to read the full article.

After back-to-back turns in haunting projects like American Horror Story and Smile, Kal Penn hits the small screen in the family friendly holiday series The Santa Clauses opposite Tim Allen. In the (now streaming) Disney+ series, the entertainment industry vet plays a frustrated entrepreneur who is juggling ambitious business goals with the demands of being a father. The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Penn over Zoom to talk about how why he signed on, what it was like acting opposite young actors playing very old elves and who his character really is.

When this came your way, how familiar were you with The Santa Clause franchise?

Very familiar. The first Santa Clause movie came out when I was in high school, so I was a little older than the people who fully few up watching it. Meaning, I wasn’t eight years old...

‘The Santa Clauses’ Review: Disney+ Series Is Familiar but Charming
Santa Claus in An Elf's Story: The Elf on the Shelf (2010)
If you’ve spent the last 28 years wondering about the logistics of Santa Claus falling off of a man’s roof and that man suddenly becoming Santa Claus, Disney+ is here to finally bring you some peace, some answers and a little bit of Christmas joy.

“The Santa Clauses” essentially serves as the fourth movie in the Disney franchise, a delightful six-episode series that catches up with the Calvin-Claus family 28 years after Scott (Tim Allen) first put on the suit and reluctantly became the big guy. While Santa is beloved by all the elves at the North Pole, his magic is beginning to fade. He’s losing weight, and Mrs. Claus (Elizabeth Mitchell) is struggling with her lack of a first name or personality. Their son Cal (Austin Kane) plays VR games of regular domestic life, and daughter Sandra’s (Elizabeth Allen-Dick) only real friends are animals. When head elf...

The Santa Clause franchise is one of the most timeless holiday season classics, and it's set to continue with Disney+'s upcoming miniseries The Santa Clauses. The Santa Clauses Review: A Surprisingly Good Series That Avoids The Legacy Sequel Curse
Image
When I discovered Disney+ had a sequel miniseries in the works for the "Santa Clause" Christmas movie series, dread stirred deep in my inner being. So far, I did not have much luck with these properties: "Home Sweet Home Alone" was painfully unfunny, while the "Diary Of A Wimpy Kid" 2021 animated reboot was inconsequential and — dare I say? — boring (a fatal flaw in any kids' film). I had come to accept that Disney+ was where the 20th Century Studios franchises went to die. Thankfully (if surprisingly), that does not appear to be the case for "The Santa Clauses" miniseries — at least not based on the two episodes provided for review.

"The Santa Clauses" is a direct sequel to the beloved "Santa Clause" trilogy. Scott Calvin (Tim Allen), aka Santa Claus, is nearing his 65th birthday, and it's clear the Christmas magic is starting to wane. This leads him and his wife,...

One Thing Tim Allen Regrets About Santa Clause 3
Image
Tim Allen wishes he'd had more screen time with Martin Short in The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause. Allen first brought accidental Santa Scott Calvin to life in 1994's The Santa Clause and reprised the role in 2002's The Santa Clause 2 and 2006's trilogy finisher, The Santa Clause 3. The third film saw Allen's character struggling to balance his new family with Carol (Elizabeth Mitchell) and his responsibilities as Santa, which left him susceptible to Jack Frost's (Martin Short) manipulations. Though The Santa Clause 3 scored much lower with critics than its predecessors, Short's character was a refreshing addition to the franchise.

During a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Allen spoke about his feelings surrounding the third installment in The Santa Clause franchise. The actor regrets the film's direction, saying it "overshot the runway" and that the upcoming Disney+ series should "explain that one away and bring it back down to magic.

Tim Allen Searches for a Santa Successor in ‘The Santa Clauses’ Trailer
Image
Tim Allen is busting out his white beard. The actor stars as Saint Nick himself in the first trailer for Disney+ series “The Santa Clauses.”

The show serves as a follow-up to the “Santa Clause” Christmas series, which released three films between 1994 and 2006. Allen starred in each film as Scott Calvin, a toy salesman who accidentally causes the death of Santa Claus and is roped into becoming the holiday icon’s successor. Later sequels saw Scott gain a Mrs. Claus in Carol Newman (played by Elizabeth Mitchell) and battle Jack Frost (Martin Short). Although the sequels received increasingly negative reviews as the series went on, all three movies were box-office successes and are now seasonal classics.

“The Santa Clauses” sees Allen and Mitchell reprise their roles, as well as Eric Lloyd as Scott’s son Charlie and David Krumholtz as Bernard, the head elf of the North Pole. The limited series finds Scott,...

The Santa Clauses Trailer: Tim Allen Is Back As A Troubled St. Nick On Disney+
Image
Holiday movies are a lot like holiday music in many ways. For the most part, so many of us end up going back to the well of films and songs that have endured for decades at this point, such as "A Christmas Story." One of the films that managed to break through and become a true classic in the '90s was Disney's "The Santa Clause." Well, for those who are feeling a bit nostalgic nearly 30 years removed, Tim Allen is back as Santa in a brand new series headed to Disney+ this holiday season -- and we've got a trailer.

Allen reprised the role twice in two sequels that earned significantly less good will (and money) than their predecessors. Be that as it may, in the streaming era, there is always room for nostalgia. Particularly under Disney's umbrella. So, what is Scott Calvin getting up to this time? Well,...

Tim Allen Says The Santa Clauses Will Address Intriguing Unanswered Questions From The Franchise
Image
It's time for all of those people who complained Disney was "ruining Tim Allen's legacy" by casting Chris Evans in "Lightyear" to put their Disney+ streaming hours where their mouths are, because "The Santa Clauses" are coming to town! The trilogy of Christmas films first began in 1994, with Allen taking on the role of the holly-jolliest man in red, and ensuring a generation would misspell "Santa Claus'' for the rest of their lives. The series comes 16 years after the final film, and will likely conclude this particular story of Santa and co. for good.

Scott Calvin (Allen) is getting older, and he's not going to be able to continue being Santa forever. He only got the gig the first time around after he scared the big man off the roof and was contractually obligated to fulfill the role, but as he feels his Santa magic slowly slipping away, he...

Since Scott is on the brink of his 65th birthday and realizing that he can’t be Santa forever, he announces his retirement to the elves and begins the process of finding his worthy replacement.

The series’ first trailer and the show’s Nov. 16, two-episode premiere were shared Saturday at D23 in Anaheim. Besides Allen — who was greeted with a huge roar from the crowd — the series will also star Elizabeth Mitchell as Carol/Mrs. Claus, Elizabeth Allen-Dick as Sandra, Devin Bright as Noel, Austin Kane as Cal, Matilda Lawler as Betty, Rupali Redd as Grace, Laura San Giacomo as a Christmas witch, and Kal Penn as Simon Choski.

The actress, last seen in Barry and NCIS, will play La Befana — a Christmas Witch from Italian folklore who delivered treats to good children on the morning of the epiphany. She now resides in the Wobbly Woods of the North Pole.

San Giacomo reunites with Jack Burditt, who is the executive producer and showrunner of the Disney+ comedy that stars Tim Allen. San Giacomo worked with Burditt on Just Shoot Me.

‘The Santa Clauses’ Disney+ Series Brings Back David Krumholtz as Bernard the Elf
Image
“The Santa Clauses,” the Disney+ limited series continuing “The Santa Clause” franchise, is bringing back David Krumholtz in the role of Bernard the Elf, Variety has confirmed.

Krumholtz is reuniting with fellow “The Santa Clause” actors Tim Allen and Elizabeth Mitchell in the new series. Allen and Mitchell are set to reprise their roles of Scott Calvin/Santa Claus and Carol Calvin/Mrs. Claus, respectively. In both the 1994 film “The Santa Clause” and its 2002 sequel “The Santa Clause 2,” Bernard serves as the head elf of Santa’s workshop. A stickler for getting things done on time, Bernard can tend to be a grumpier, less cheerful elf, but he does it all to keep the other elves on task and productive.

In addition to his role in the “Santa Clause” films, Krumholtz is known for appearing in the “Harold & Kumar” franchise and in films like “10 Things I Hate About You...

David Krumholtz to Reprise Role as Bernard in ‘The Santa Clause’ Spinoff Series
David Krumholtz
What’s all this boo-hooin’ about? David Krumholtz coming back as Bernard the Elf in Disney+’s upcoming “The Santa Clauses” limited series!

Krumholtz joins his fellow movie alums Tim Allen and Elizabeth Mitchell in the series, who are returning as Scott Calvin/Santa Claus and Carol Newman/Mrs. Claus respectively. Of course, it’s been several years since we’ve seen Bernard the Elf, so whether he’s still working in Santa’s workshop remains to be seen. Details on Bernard’s storyline are not yet known.

Bernard has become a fan favorite over the years, despite his gruffness. And that’s something that Krumholtz has always appreciated. In a 2019 interview, the actor noted that “It means the world to me. I appreciate any kind of reaction [to] anything I do. You know, really! You’re supposed to make people feel things, whatever those things are.”
