The legends of great leaders who rallied people to stand up against tyranny have echoed through the ages. Stories like Braveheart and Lord of the Rings showcase brave souls who rose to defend their lands when all seemed lost. A new film now shares another such story with modern audiences—that of William Tell, the revered 14th-century Swiss folk hero.
In William Tell, director Nick Hamm sets out to bring Tell’s full saga to thrilling life. We learn how this hunting father found himself rebelling against occupying forces threatening his simple lifestyle. As the film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, viewers discovered how Tell reluctantly took up his famous bow to champion a resistance movement against cruel overlords.
Playing Tell is Claes Bang, an actor capable of conveying quiet resilience. Opposite him is Connor Swindells’ chilling performance as the brutal Viceroy determined to break the Swiss spirit. Their...

There’s no question Carrie Coon broke out with HBO series “The Leftovers.” Landing that role was a big deal for the actress. “I had little on-camera work up to that point,” she told IndieWire over Zoom. “I had done some commercial work in Chicago. I had done one guest star on ‘The Playboy Club,’ with Laura Benanti. I didn’t have that much on-camera experience.”
But a Tony nomination for her performance as Honey in Steppenwolf’s 2012 production of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” opened doors to meetings with casting directors — and her husband Tracy Letts. Ellen Lewis had Coon in for an audition. “I met with Damon [Lindelof],” said Coon. “I shot the pilot, which was only one speech, and then I went off and did ‘Gone Girl,’ which I also booked off a tape in my living room. I went through David Fincher boot camp. [‘The Leftovers’] was my first series regular job.

Deadpool's love life is complicated, but his relationship with Black Widow was short-lived due to her not wanting to get closer. Shiklah and Deadpool's marriage quickly fell apart as she cheated on him and left him for her original fianc, Dracula. Copycat, also known as Vanessa, had a tumultuous relationship with Deadpool, including her death at the hands of the Weapon X project.

Carrie Coon started her Wednesday with extreme fatigue from lack of sleep and a full house of visiting family when she learned about her first nomination for playing socialite Bertha Russell in HBO’s The Gilded Age.
But it wasn’t until she learned that her husband Tracy Letts received a nomination for playing Jack McKinney on HBO’s Winning Time: The Rise Of The Lakers Dynasty did she actually start to cry. The Gilded Age ended up earning six nominations — including one for Best Drama and another for Supporting Actress for Christine Baranski — but she was more giddy to be the one to inform her husband about his shout-out in the guest-starring actor category.
“I sent a video to my husband and said, ‘Tracy, you have an Emmy nomination. Oh my God,'” she tells Deadline. “I Immediately started to cry, and my family said, ‘you weren’t crying when you got a nomination,...

This article contains spoilers for Homicide: Los Angeles episode 1.
Phil Spector was a music legend and Los Angeles celebrity royalty. He revolutionized rock and roll with his “Wall of Sound” production, and went on to finalize The Beatles’ Let It Be. This means nothing to investigators on Homicide: Los Angeles. On Feb. 3, 2003, the body of Lana Clarkson, a 40-year-old actress and VIP Hostess of The House of Blues, was found dead in a chair in Spector’s foyer.
Netflix’s five-episode true crime docuseries fully covers the prosecutorial pursuit in one installment. Here’s what was condensed in discovery.
Lana Clarkson Was a Successful Actress
In the June 2003 article “Inside the Undoing of Phil Spector,” Spector told Esquire Clarkson “kissed the gun” before shooting herself. At trial, Spector’s attorneys claimed a depressed Clarkson used the 38-caliber pistol in his foyer. In spite of the Spector PR team’s smear campaign,...

Chicago’s Goodman Theatre presents Wilson’s “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone,” now through May 19th, 2024 (click here).

The Gilded Age introduces fictional characters involved in historical events of the 1880s, such as the Opera War. Some characters are loosely based on real people, while others are stricter adaptations, adding credibility to the show's fictional storylines. The show intertwines real historical events and figures with its fictional narrative, still accurately conveying the atmosphere of the Gilded Age.
Julian Fellowes' The Gilded Age makes more changes to history than his previous show, Downton Abbey. In the newer series, the lives of Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson), her aunts Agnes (Christine Baranski) and Ada (Cynthia Nixon), and other fictional characters are interwoven with historical events of the 1880s. Different storylines depict or are inspired by New York's Opera War, the Homestead Strike, and the work of several revolutionary figures.

The Gilded Age stars Christine Baranski and Cynthia Nixon go way back — they first shared the Broadway stage in 1984, when the Tony-winning Baranski played mother to Nixon in Tom Stoppard’s acclaimed play The Real Thing. “Who’s this young, gifted, charming woman?” Baranski recalls of first working with Nixon, who — nearly 40 years after their first collaboration — now plays Ada Brook, the sister to Baranski’s Agnes van Rhijn on Julian Fellowes’ historical HBO drama.
“I was already in awe of her,” says Nixon of working with her scene partner decades ago. “I was basically a kid, but we’re only 14 years apart. She was way too young to be my mother, but that didn’t occur to me at the time.”
Adds Baranski with a laugh: “I loved playing her mother, and now I’m her older sister. Don’t you love showbiz?”

The Gilded Age season 3 promises to explore the power dynamics between Agnes and Ada in their new household. Gladys may find love with a young man named Billy Carlton, causing tension with her mother, Bertha. Peggy quits her job at the New York Globe and begins pursuing a career as a novelist, showing her ambition and intelligence.
The Gilded Age has officially been renewed for a 3rd season by HBO. Creator Julian Fellowes' new series following the war between Old Money and New in late 19th-century New York has captured audiences with the same witty drama and period costuming and sets as Downton Abbey. Fellowes' engaging characters and stories convey the concerns primarily of the upper class in the 19th and 20th centuries to a modern audience.

When it comes to TV, how comforting is too comforting? At what point do the vibes outweigh the plot? These are the brave questions perhaps not asked but definitely raised by Julian Fellowes’ “The Gilded Age,” which finished its second season on Sunday, December 17. In a review of the full season, IndieWire’s Ben Travers compared the show to “a light drizzle,” saying that “The absence of actual conflict — problems that require more than a polite request to sort out — is so pronounced it threatens to undermine the serene parade of beautiful gowns by boring the pants off of those wearing them.”
And while Mr. Travers has new problems to deal with, “The Gilded Age” did gain a modicum of momentum in its back half and especially its finale, even if the actual plot developments were predictable (and not just from historical accuracy). There is potential here, whether it’s...

“I don’t understand. Are you and Mrs. Astor friends or rivals?” Gladys Russell (Taissa Farmiga) asks her mother in a recent episode of The Gilded Age. “The two are not exclusive,” Bertha (Carrie Coon) responds without missing a beat.
Bertha struggled in the first season to be considered without disdain. Now, she is the master of this game, going up against high-society maven Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy) rather than courting her attention. The exchange between mother and daughter sums up how the ongoing opera wars are turning a frenemy dynamic into a socialite feud. In doing so, the HBO series from Julian Fellowes has hit a glorious stride worthy of the Sunday night slot, tapping into an irresistible mix of petty quarrels, lavish parties, and captivating couture.

In doing so, the HBO series from Julian Fellowes has hit a glorious stride worthy of the Sunday night slot, tapping into an irresistible mix of petty quarrels, lavish parties, and captivating couture.

Fans of “The Gilded Age” know that Carrie Coon provides the social-climbing spark to a costume drama where most of the characters are seething or scheming underneath their polite veneers. As Bertha Russell, Coon is always one step ahead of the old money elites attempting to thwart the rise of her and her railroad baron husband, George, and their family. But the impeccably tailored outfits that Bertha wears like armor to do battle with the gatekeepers of late 19th-century New York society can
be hazardous.
“There’s an episode where I’m at a tennis club for a party, and I could barely walk in that dress,” Coon says. “They had to come in and do an intervention and cut fabric out and change the under-bustle, because I was falling over. And then they put you in three-inch heels and a pearl choker, which when you take that off at the end of the night,...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Gilded Age Season 2 Episode 4, “Duke It Out.”] Carrie Coon‘s Bertha Russell is fighting two battles in The Gilded Age Season 2: her public opera war with Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy) and her private battle with Enid Turner/Mrs. Winterton (Kelley Curran). Episode 4 proved she’s currently winning both. After a famous playwright came to town in Episode 3, the Manhattan elite were visited by the English Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb) in Episode 4, and the Russells and the Wintertons were both competing for the prize of his attention. The Wintertons knew the Duke from their time across the pond, but Bertha wouldn’t give her former lady’s maid — and would-be seductress of her husband, George (Morgan Spector) — the satisfaction of the public notoriety that would come with sitting next to him at dinner. She switched their name cards, which was enough to make Turner seethe across ...

The costumes in The Gilded Age are meticulously chosen to reflect the characters' personalities, social statuses, histories, and ambitions. The fashion choices of the characters in The Gilded Age reveal their motivations, including Bertha's bold colors to make an impression and Marian's practical attire to get work done. Gladys' blue frock with lace and ribbons demonstrates her desire to make her own way in the world, while Peggy's business-like attire reflects her ambitions to be a writer.
Like its predecessor, Downton Abbey, The Gilded Age has its work cut out for it when it comes to costumes, featuring countless vintage pieces, fabrics, and decadent accessories — and the best dresses from the series will steal the spotlight from everything else unfolding on-screen. “I was obsessed with Edith Wharton when I was a teenager. That whole world was very much a part of my imagination when I was a young girl,” remembers Deborah Kampmeier, who directs two episodes of the second season of “The Gilded Age.” The HBO drama series draws heavily on the works of the legendary writer, and the director’s affinity for her writing and the opportunity to step into “the decadence of the world” of that period drew her to the project. She was also inspired by the “epic nature of the style” of the show that was established in its first season by directors Michael Engler and Salli Richardson-Whitfield. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
To acclimate herself to the visual style of the lavish period piece, which is set in 1880s New York, Kampmeier “really studied season one,” sharing, “I watched those episodes multiple times.” She worked...

Season 2 of HBO’s “The Gilded Age” delves deeper into the steel strikers and railroad labor unions that loomed in Season 1 — a storyline that parallels the recent entertainment industry strikes, co-showrunner Sonja Warfield says.

The new HBO series “The Gilded Age” hails from “Downton Abbey” creator Julian Fellowes, and much like that hit period series, this one features a lot of characters. Several cadres of characters keep the plot pivoting back and forth between households and prominent locations around 1890s New York, as the show tells a story of New York City on the cusp of change, where the battle between old money and new money — as well as old and new ways of doing things — is being fought.
A mix of veteran actors and actresses balance out some newer talent in Julian Fellowes’ latest fictional show — from “Sex and the City’s” Cynthia Nixon to Meryl Streep’s youngest daughter Louisa Jacobson, who plays a main heroine at the heart of aristocratic New York City.

A gasp went around the world when viewers learned that Marian (Louisa Jacobsen) has been teaching children watercolors in “The Gilded Age” Season 2, Episode 1.
Less of a gasp and more of a chuckle, really, as “The Gilded Age” did what it arguably does best, delivering an extremely minor narrative development with the intensity of something much more significant. The show is filled with such petty inconveniences, as well as actual serious developments, all of it sold to full effect by the cast and setting. Teaching watercolor probably was a big deal for a high-society unmarried woman in the 19th-century, but it’s exacerbated on “The Gilded Age” by Aunt Agnes’ (Christine Baranski) reaction. Truly, watching characters on the show react to everything from the wrong napkin to a secret child is one of the joys of watching this series.

The Gilded Age aims to accurately represent the details of the time period, from clothing to social norms, offering a fuller picture of 1880s fashion and New York society. While the specific details may be fictional, the show captures the social war between old and new money groups in New York, reflecting the conflict and attraction between them. The Russells, particularly Bertha and George, are loosely based on Alva and William K. Vanderbilt, who had to work hard to gain respect and entry into the upper echelons of New York society. The show includes other real historical figures, such as Clara Barton and Thomas Fortune, to add to its period accuracy.

Mrs. Astor and Agnes are not so keen on her fighting spirit and the change it threatens to bring. “That’s it: head to head, and one will be the winner,” Bertha declares of the...
