If you grew up in the early 2000s, chances are you spent many evenings with Ray Barone (Ray Romano) and his eccentric family in the hit comedy series "Everybody Loves Raymond." For good reason. Running from 1997 to 2005, "Raymond" won 15 Primetime Emmys, garnered critical acclaim, and averaged over 20 million viewers during its peak. More impressively, the cast became household names, forever tied to their characters. Still, while many cast members achieved even greater success following the show's finale, others faded into obscurity or endured heartbreaking tragedy. Interested to learn more? The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been a staple of children's entertainment since 1987 when their cartoon was first released. The idea of these creatures was so absurd that they were obviously an enormous hit. They would go on to have their own series of live-action films and a multitude of spin-off TV shows. However, their most recent live-action outing was the Michael Bay-directed Out of the Shadows.
One of the main villains in the film is Krang. He is meant to be the bad guy who is even worse than Shredder and with even more of a cartoonish nefarious plan. But even though he recruits Shredder to help him, it inevitably ends badly. So what is it about Krang that made him turn his back on what should have been his best ally?

Eight years after it flopped at the box office, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is making a comeback on Netflix. It follows the titular heroes as they take on the formidable villain team of Shredder (Brian Tee), Dr. Baxter Stockman (Tyler Perry), and the brutal extra-terrestrial Krang (Brad Garrett). Despite its star-studded cast, including Stephen Amell, Will Arnett, and Megan Fox, the film flopped at the box office, but it is now redeeming itself on Netflix.

Any number of factors may influence a viewer's feelings towards a character, whether due to their actions and motivations or their overall role in the story. In fact, it can be argued that audiences are supposed to hate or at least love to hate certain characters. There are countless live-action examples of this recurring narrative motif, including Joffrey Baratheon in Game of Thrones and Homelander in The Boys.
Cartoons, on the other hand, are an entirely different ball game. Not only are they designed for kids and, therefore, immune to rationalization, but they're also not meant to be taken seriously. And yet, there are so many cartoon characters that can only be described as objectionable. Some of them are that way by design, especially when applied to humorous effect. All of them, however, can be expected to raise the audience's hackles whenever they appear onscreen.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are a band of anthropomorphic terrapin teenage brothers who fight crime in New York City and usually lives in the Metropolis' sewer system. The beloved franchise was inspired by characters from a comic book written and illustrated by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman, though they've since grown far beyond these printed roots.
The franchise reached peak popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s, spawning toys, animated cartoons, feature films, and other product tie-ins. Since their conception, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have seen many reinventions, allowing new generations to discover the crime-fighting turtles. The television series has been one of the most popular Tmnt iterations franchise over the years.
Updated by Timothy Blake Donohoo on October 12, 2023: The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise continues to grow through new iterations. This includes a recent movie that's now set to receive a sequel and a TV show spinoff.

The Dragon Turtlezord, a combination of the Green Ranger's Dragonzord and Donatello's Metalhead, is a fan-favorite crossover that gives '90s kids the dream they never thought they'd get. Cranston and Donatello's collaboration creates several advances, including a morphing device that allows Shredder to become the new Green Power Ranger with control over the Dragonzord. The Dragon Turtlezord symbolizes the fusion of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers' 90s fame with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, leaving fans excited for future crossover installments.
From its first appearance in Episode 21 of the '90s television show Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the Dragonzord - the Green Ranger's mecha - has been a fan-favorite. However, as a result of its inability to combine with the newer and more powerful Thunderzord class of Power Ranger battle-bots, the Dragonzord faded into disuse - that is until a recent and unexpected upgrade from an unlikely source.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles creator Kevin Eastman hopes the Tmnt: Mutant Mayhem sequel brings more fan-favorite characters from the comic books to the big screen.
Speaking to ComicBook, Eastman said that although several canon characters appeared in the 2012 animated series, he would love to see them in a movie. "Through the experience of the Nickelodeon animated series, which just wonderfully brought in some original concepts from the original cartoon series to all the elements, the Tricetons had such a big role in there. So we've been lucky enough to experience this in so many ways and so many opportunities," he said. "I look forward to seeing where the sequels to Mutant Mayhem are going to go. Not just the series, but the next movie because, you know, you've got Casey Jones waiting in the wings. You've got Krang out there, and you've got the Rock Soldiers and Neutrinos. So I'm,...

In Tmnt: Mutant Mayhem's sequel, Shredder's story is connected to Tcri, the Techno Cosmic Research Institute, suggesting a different history for the character than usual iterations. The sequel could introduce Shredder as Utrom Shredder from the 2003 animated show, tying him to the alien race Cynthia is part of, the Tcri's leader. Utrom Shredder would make sense in the sequel, explaining the link between Cynthia and Shredder and providing a deeper motivation for opposing the Turtles given the Turtles' making an enemy of Tcri/Utroms in the first movie.
The tease included in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem that set up Shredder's involvement in a sequel could also have foreshadowed a big identity twist concerning the Turtles' arch-nemesis. The villain of the first installment in the new iteration of the iconic Turtle team was Superfly, with some changes being made to overall Tmnt lore. That said, the ending of...

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem artist Justin Runfola shared a number of Shredder concept art, confirming the iconic villain’s canceled appearance from the latest animated Tmnt movie.
Through a series of tweets posted on his X account, the character designer and visual artist revealed several of his designs for Shredder, who was originally set to be included in Mutant Mayhem during its early stages of development. Some of the concept art showed a different and unique look of the villain, while most of the designs feature the character’s familiar samurai armor.

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #142 While there are few teams in comic book fiction more iconic than the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, it seems the original four brothers may not be fighting side-by-side for very much longer. Since the end of the Armageddon Game, Leonardo, Donatallo, Michelangelo, and Raphael have been steadily drifting apart, each one finding their own passions, none of which involve any of the others. While this may sound sad for the more nostalgic Tmnt fans, it’s actually a very natural progression that offers many interesting avenues for future storytelling.
Right now in Tmnt canon, the Ninja Turtles have never been further apart, and it is all stemming from a piece of information they learned during the Armageddon Game. Apparently, all of them have an inherent mysticism that quite literally draws people into their orbit. Sometimes this is a good thing,...

After a seven-year hiatus from presenting on the big screen, Master Splinter and his four adoptive half-sons have finally returned in the long-awaited Paramount Pictures’ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. With a visual cel-shaded look that is reminiscent of Sony’s animated Spider-Man movies and adding to the otherwise expansive comic book lore by introducing a new villain called Superfly (voiced by Ice Cube) to the mix, this newest entry into the turtle’s theatrical career seems to already be a surefire success with the movie already crossing one hundred million dollars globally at the box office and holding a very high score on rotten tomatoes both with audiences and critics.
Considering the fact that we are all now going to have to wait a good amount of time for the inevitable sequel (as Mutant Mayhem did have a mid-credits scene that teased some very familiar villains), both old...

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem reinvents Baxter Stockman, making him a cowardly scientist who fears a corporation and stays in hiding throughout his arc. In contrast to the comic books where Stockman is evil and manipulative, the movie version of him is portrayed as a nervous wreck and lacks the same level of prowess and lack of conscience. Baxter Stockman's weaker depiction in Mutant Mayhem is due to him not being the main villain, but rather the creator of the primary villain Superfly, played by Ice Cube.

Superfly is strikingly familiar to a fan-favorite villain in the Tmnt franchise, and the writers of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem leveraged the semblance with a risky creative twist.
Mutant Mayhem’s attempt at full fan service was evident as early as when the first teaser for the film was released. The succeeding trailers didn’t disappoint and revealed more than a handful of villains. Although Shredder and Krang never appeared in the previews, some of the usual suspects such as Bebop, Rocksteady, and Baxter Stockman were fortunately confirmed. None of the easy picks were cast as the main villain, however, and the writers opted to throw in Superfly as the new "big bad". The character’s resemblance to the mutated Baxter Stockman in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise didn’t escape notice, and one of the film’s writers admitted to IGN that Superfly was a huge creative risk.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have had some goofy adventures over the years, making it hard to realize that the terrapin quartet began life in fairly gritty comic books. This tone would be revisited throughout the decades, with one example being the 2003 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon. Said show was far darker than its predecessors, and that was almost taken to a "trashy" extreme with one character.
Garbageman was a somewhat disliked villain in the 2003 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles show, with many finding him to be rather one-note. An unmade episode, however, would have given him depth in a tragic, borderline cruel capacity. This storyline was deemed far too sinister and dark for the target audience, which is strange given that it revealed a major part of a recurring villain's backstory.

The following contains spoilers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, now playing in theaters.
There's no doubt Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem wears its influences on its sleeve. The film pays homage to the old-school Tmnt comics, games and cartoons. But there are other nods to pop culture, including one on Hollywood's biggest debates: which Chris is the finest among Evans, Hemsworth and Pine.
In addition, Mutant Mayhem uses Attack on Titan to save the day when Superfly turns into a giant kaiju. This direction creates comedy and action, which helps unite different generations of fans. Interestingly, while the movie references if the Turtles could be loved by society like Avengers: Endgame's Hulk, there's another Marvel deep-cut. In fact, two are directly tied to Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man.

The following contains spoilers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, now playing in theaters.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem heavily changes a lot of what fans know about the Ninja Turtles. From how the teenage turtles act to the world around them, things are quite different from the franchise's other continuities. This can be seen in how the movie's secondary antagonist references a classic species from previous shows and comic books.
Cynthia Utrom attempts to use the turtles to harness the power of the mutagenic ooze. Interestingly, her last name is the same as an alien group from the original comics and the franchise's 2003 cartoon. The suggestion is that these extraterrestrials now have a much more earthbound origin. While this might be the biggest change among many in Mutant Mayhem, it's mostly for the better.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" follows the long tradition of reimagining the long-running franchise with every new adaptation, each new film and TV series changing character backstories, motivations, and relationships. In the case of "Mutant Mayhem," we get a brand new origin story for Master Splinter that's more meta and quite hilarious, a completely different Baxter Stockman, a redesign for the Turtles that highlights the teenage part of "Tmnt," and a radically different dynamic between the Turtles and classic villains like Bebop and Rocksteady.
The film also introduces new characters, such as the villainous Cynthia. She leads the Techno Cosmic Research Institute (Tcri) that hired Baxter Stockman to develop a mutagen that could create mutant creatures to be used as weapons. Played by Maya Rudolph, Cynthia is cool, funny, very weird, and threatening. Of course, arguably the most...

Rebooting the classic franchise in the best way possible, Jeff Rowe's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem puts a refreshing younger spin on the iconic Heroes in A Half Shell, as they're actually just fifteen years old, smack dab in the middle of teenhood.
The mean, green, mutant machines are simply teenagers who like anime and rap and think they know better than their elders. So they leave the safety of the sewers for the world of New York City above, but get in over their heads when they have to face an army of mutants intent on wiping out humanity and filling the world with ooze-infested monsters.
And their adventure aboveground is chock full of Easter eggs for the fans, with plenty of references and callbacks to their team's past filling the screen. So let's take a look throughout the turtle's latest adventure and find all the biggest Easter eggs in Mutant Mayhem.

Even though "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" brings in a plethora of characters from the long history of comics, cartoons, and movies (including many of which who have never been seen on the big screen before), there's one major figure who has been intentionally held back: Shredder.
The news of Shredder not being in "Mutant Mayhem" isn't exactly a secret. Director Jeff Rowe was very open in the press about how Shredder was originally the villain in an early version of the movie, but he and his team ended up completely overhauling the story and saving him for the forthcoming sequel. Plus, all the marketing has been focused on introducing us to Ice Cube as Superfly, who leads his own team of mutants on a villainous scheme to dominate humanity by turning all the world's creatures into mutant beings like them. But the mid-credits scene for "Tmnt: Mutant Mayhem" sets up a sequel,...

It's no secret Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem changes franchise lore. Admittedly, it's a breath of fresh air after so many decades of comics, cartoons and live-action movies that harp on evil mutants, Shredder and the Foot. The shift begins with Baxter Stockman, who is not actually a villain or a mad scientist.
As the movie's title suggests, Stockman's ooze leads to tons of mayhem when it leaks into New York's sewers. Luckily, the Heroes in a Half Shell and Baxter's mutated family team up at the end to stop Ice Cube's Superfly. However, Mutant Mayhem's main antagonist gets their shine in a shocking mid-credits scene -- one that promises massive danger to come on two deadly fronts.

Where’s the Shredder?!
For all of the youthful energy of the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, Mutant Mayhem, for all the fun it is to see deep-cut characters like Mondo Gecko and Wingnut hit the big screen, for as much fun as big baddie Superfly certainly is, fans are still wondering about the absence of the most dangerous villain to cross paths with the heroes in a half shell.
On one hand, Shredder’s absence does make sense. Mutant Mayhem reboots the series in the most radical way yet, not only giving us the early adventures of the Turtles but also making them markedly different from previous takes. Cowabunga, dudes! With a new Turtle-tastic adventure in our midst with "Mutant Mayhem," it's time to walk down memory lane and see how the surprisingly extensive "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" cinematic canon stacks up. Read on, for our totally tubular and definitive ranking may surprise even the most ardent "Tmnt" fans.
Created in 1984 by comic book artists Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, the Turtles have become a staple in pop culture and one of the most enduring media franchises across films, television, toys, and video games. They've inspired rap songs, Halloween costumes, and even thousands of dollars in collectors' auctions. It's hard not to be charmed by the hilarious banter from leader Leonardo, tech-wiz Donatello, cool-but-crude Raphael, and party dude Michelangelo, but how has such a confounding concept endured this long?
Well, no matter how malleable the characters are, the series always remains a story about family, brotherhood, and good triumphing over evil.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" is digging deeper into the roster of mutant characters than any other big screen adaptation before it. Sure, the more recent live-action adaptations produced by Michael Bay gave us photorealistic CGI versions of Bebop, Rocksteady, and Krang, but "Mutant Mayhem" digs into the stranger corners of the long history of "Tmnt" comics and animation to deliver a roster of wacky and weird characters for the Turtles to square off against.
Leading the mutant mayhem is a character known only as Superfly, a mutated, bipedal fly with an axe to grind against humanity. Voiced by Ice Cube, the character brings some Blaxploitation flair to the movie. However, it sounds like Superfly was originally going to be a much different character that took a more direct cue from "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" history. And it all starts with Baxter Stockman.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" brings us a fresh new take on the heroes in a half-shell (read our review here). The visual style is unlike anything we've seen in the film franchise before, bringing a mix of "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" innovation with unique sketchbook-esque artistic flourishes that make the entire production feel scrappy and cool. Even beyond the animation, the development of the turtles being portrayed and voiced by actual teens adds a dynamic that makes them feel more like genuine teens than any other iteration.
Another key way that "Mutant Mayhem" stands out among all the other "Tmnt" movies is by delivering on the movie's title. This time, there are more mutants in the movie than ever. Along with the turtles and their adoptive father Splinter, the chief villain of the film is Superfly (Ice Cube...

While much of the initial fanbase that helped turn Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles into a pop culture phenomenon aged out following the original cartoon (1987-1996) and live action movies (1990-1993), the property has continued to flourish with reboots in TV, film, and comics every few years.
If the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has you interested in exploring various versions of Tmnt, there’s no better place for a horror fan to start than Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series that aired for five seasons between 2012 and 2017.
While there’s an inherent connection to horror in the various mutants and monsters that pop up throughout the franchise, no rendition embraces the genre nearly as much as this one. In addition to references to classics like Alien, Friday the 13th, and The Evil Dead, the series employed several notable horror actors throughout its 124-episode run.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem co-writer and director Jeff Rowe recently justified changes to the franchise's established canon included in the animated blockbuster.
Rowe rationalized making alterations to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' "backstory stuff" in Mutant Mayhem in an interview with Uproxx. "Sometimes a lot of our early conversations were like, 'How do we make this world make sense?'" he said. "Because there was a logic in the comic and then it shifted a little bit in the TV series and then it was completely different in the live-action movie. And what's explained in the first episode of the animated TV series, which I watched religiously as a child, is if you touch ooze, you mutate into whatever the last animal was that you touched. The logic is so twisted and weird."
