Santa Tell Me Review: Unwrapping a Holiday Romance Miracle
Image
Holiday love comedies like “Santa Tell Me” are fun and silly; this one is no exception. It combines Christmas magic, romance, and a bit of playful fate, giving the movie a different take on the typical holiday love story. Erin Krakow plays Olivia Spencer, an ambitious interior designer who wants to start her TV show.

As a child, Olivia wished to know the name of her real love. This wish sets the stage for Olivia’s journey. After 25 years, that seemingly forgotten wish from childhood comes back to life in the strangest way. A special letter she writes to herself tells her that her soulmate’s name is Nick, which starts a funny and touching search for love.

Olivia meets three good-looking men named Nick at the same time: a pediatric neurosurgeon, a furniture store owner, and a firefighter. This makes the story more complicated. Each Nick has his personality and potential,...

Jem and the Holograms Review
While we here in Britain are scrutinising over the need to bring Dad’s Army to the silver screen, there will be many others pondering quite why the 1980s animated TV series Jem is being rewarded with a big screen endeavour. Though screenwriter Ryan Landels and director Jon M. Chu can be commended for at

Jem and the Holograms movie review: rock ’n’ roll fantasy
Utterly implausible on every level, and ultimately rather insulting: a bit of glitter and lots of hugs are the sum total of its “girl power.” I’m “biast” (pro): desperate for stories about women

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

I have not seen the source material

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Well, shoot. I really wanted to like this flick. Not that I have any investment in the 1980s cartoon it’s based on: I’ve never even seen it, and honestly, I don’t even remember it. But this is a movie about a bunch of young women — women who are very different from one another and interested in different sorts of things, and some of them are even not white! — being cool and having fun and forming a band and making music. Alas, Jem and the Holograms is utterly implausible on every level,...

Jem And The Holograms Review
With no nostalgic bias or any real affinity for Jem’s totally tubular television show, my first true interaction with Jerrica Benton is Blumhouse’s (assuredly budget-controlled) adaptation, this year’s Jem And The Holograms. You know, the version where Google Maps substitute for overhead views, musical interludes are comprised of existing YouTube videos edited together, and where fan-submitted videos make up entire scenes of footage – yup, it’s all Blumhouse-d to hell. Poor Jon M. Chu was most certainly handcuffed monetarily on certain decisions, but even so, that doesn’t excuse a blasé coming-of-age story that should have been “outta sight” given Jem’s (originally) holographic disguise – which is totally changed. Here’s the watered-down, Blumhouse version of Jem that fans certainly weren’t asking for, built on healthy doses of believing in yourself, misty-eyed hugs, and utterly mundane generics.

Aubrey Peeples stars as Jerrica, a small-town girl who...

As a small-town girl catapults from underground video sensation to global superstar, she and her three sisters begin a one-in-a-million journey of discovering that some talents are too special to keep hidden. In Universal Pictures’ Jem And The Holograms, four aspiring musicians will take the world by storm when they see that the key to creating your own destiny lies in finding your own voice.

Last week, Wamg got to sit down with stars Aubrey Peeples (Jem) and Ryan Guzman (Rio) in a small press conference to talk about their experience working on the film. Check out some of the highlights below!

Jon Chu said you were a very analog girl but also very modern. Can you talk a little about the process you went through to get the role and were you familiar with Jem beforehand?

’80s Retro Effort Jem And The Holograms Releases New Images
Jem and the Holograms may go down in movie history as one of the craziest things to have ever happened, but not for the simple reason that it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be a great film. The film is about to hit (October 23), and no one seems to be making a truly concerted effort to let you know.

Back when the film was announced, and subsequently when casting info came out, the ’80s were on people’s lips, and a lot of retro everything was hot. That trend has died out, and not that many people took to Jem anyway. Jon M. Chu was somewhat hot at the time too, as the man behind The Lxd, and a couple of Step Up titles was attached to G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and uhh… ’80s cartoons, right?

At this point, things are a little weird for the film, and...

Jem And The Holograms Find Their Voice In New Clip And Poster For Musical Drama
Eager to turn the train around in time for release, Universal has pumped out a catalogue of clips – and a new poster – for its soon-to-be-released adaptation of Jem and the Holograms.

Inspired by the 80s cartoon series of the same name, the studio all but kicked the hornets’ nest earlier this year after revealing a debut trailer that was less than impressive. Since then, production company Blumhouse has assured us that Jon M. Chu’s live-action flick is actually “a great movie,” though today’s barrage of teasers doesn’t necessarily dispel our lingering doubt.

Following the rags-to-superstardom tale of Aubrey Peeples’ title character, the movie documents her humble beginnings as a budding singer operating with little more than a webcam and a shoddy microphone, to one of the hottest pop artists on the planet. Granted, considering the popularity of platforms such as YouTube, Vine, Tumblr and even Snapchat, a...

New Jem And The Holograms Trailer Piles On The Sentiment
No-one was impressed by the first Jem and The Holograms trailer, as fans complained about the liberties taken with their beloved animated series. The trouble all stems from adapting an ’80s cartoon into a 2015 live-action movie, as any variation from the source material was bound to ruffle feathers. With the arrival of a new trailer though, could those preconceptions finally be smashed?

Jem revolves around a teenage girl who picks up a guitar, writes a few tunes and ropes in her pals to join her band. Footage is uploaded to the web and before you can say “YouTube advertisement deal,” the group’s video becomes a viral hit. Global superstardom beckons.

The newest preview zeroes in the young girl, real-life name Jerrika, whose lofty rise to fame is a sugar-coated story of sentimentality. Along the way she’s plagued by a money hungry manager-type played by Juliette Lewis, and a...

Watch the Angsty, Glammy Trailer for 'Jem and the Holograms'
Aubrey Shea in Jem et les Hologrammes (2015)
Jem and the Holograms started life as an Eighties rock and roll toy line and animated series, telling the campy story of Starlight Music owner/manager Jerrica Benton transforming into rock god Jem with help from a holographic computer named Synergy. But as the film's first trailer shows, the upcoming film adaptation has taken some 21st century liberties with the plot. The movie focuses on a YouTube sensation's rise to fame and the evil manipulation of modern-day record executives – no magic technology, but plenty of young adult angst.

The clip...

‘Jem and the Holograms’ gets its first trailer
The 80s saw a lot of cartoons and animated shows gain a loyal following among individuals, even as they outgrew the series’ intended demographic. Among these shows was Jem and the Holograms, whose three-season run garnered it a fair amount of commercial acclaim, both for the show and for creator and writer Christy Marx.

Fans of the series were thus intrigued to learn that a feature film adaptation of the series was in development, as announced by Jon M. Chu. Onboard as a producer, Chu takes on directorial duties for the film as well, having previously directed Step Up 3D and GI Joe: Retaliation. Ryan Landels takes on screenwriting duties for the feature, which shares a name with the show it’s adapted from, and the cast includes Molly Ringwald and Juliette Lewis, with Nashville‘s Aubrey Peeples taking on the titular role of Jem. The movie synopsis is as follows.

First Official Photo And Synopsis Land For Jem And The Holograms
Yesterday saw a fuzzy, scanned image from Jon M. Chu’s Jem And The Holograms hit the web after an eager-eyed fan spotted it in the latest Elle. In an attempt to keep things totally outrageous, or something, Universal Pictures has now dropped a higher quality version of that same image along with a brand new synopsis.

Based on the Hasbro animated TV series, which was a huge success back in the 80s, Jem And The Holograms steps it up by dragging the rocker chick into the modern age. In her latest adventure, the songstress – and her trio of holograms – will find success after one of their songs becomes a viral hit, presumably on YouTube.

For this live-action iteration, a new cast of humans will be rockin’ out, including Aubrey Peeples, Stefanie Scott, Aurora Perrineau and Hayley Kiyoko as the leading quartet. Ryan Guzman, Molly Ringwald and Juliette Lewis are...

While the series was totally '80s, this new version will be a modern take; according to Variety, "The musical fantasy reimagines Jem amid the current hyperlinked social media era in a story of a small-town girl going from underground video sensation to global superstar with her three sisters."

Molly Ringwald Joins 'Jem and the Holograms'; Is She a Misfit?
Molly Ringwald
Is Jem and the Holograms building a badass cast line-up for The Misfits? While The Hologram's nemesis band was the same age as Jem and her orphan friends on the animated TV series, its possible that they will be portrayed by a group of has been rockers in this new iteration, as Molly Ringwald joins the cast for yet another mysterious role that is being kept a secret.

Yesterday, it was announced that Juliette Lewis had joined this adaptation of the popular Hasbro cartoon and toy line from the 80s. Her role is being kept a secret as well, and it was speculated that she may be playing Jem's artificially intelligent fairy godmother/hologram, Synergy. That is looking less likely with Molly Ringwald now coming on board. Both are a perfect fit for The Misfits, an evil Riot Girl band lead by Phyllis "Pizzazz" Gabor, a spoiled child living off...

Talk about 1980s star power. After adding Juliette Lewis to the cast, "Jem and the Holograms" has also secured Molly Ringwald for a role in the live action adaptation of the classic animated series.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Ringwald is joining the "Jem" ensemble in a yet-to-be-disclosed role. She'll star alongside Aubrey Peeples ("Nashville"), who's playing Jerrica Benton, a.k.a. Jem, and Stefanie Scott, Aurora Perrineau, and Hayley Kiyoko, who round out the rest of Jem's band, the Holograms. Ryan Guzman is playing Rio, a love interest for Jem.

While the original cartoon was set in the '80s (the series ran from 1985-1988), this film version is being described as a modern take on "Jem," which will focus on the titular character's search for her mother, and a musical-themed adventure through Los Angeles. Hey Girls, Excited about a 'Jem and the Holograms' Moviec
I felt like simply reposting my "Who is the 'Power Rangers' Audiencec" post and just replacing "Power Rangers" with Jem and the Holograms but this one confuses me even more considering we're talking about a property from the mid-'80s that hasn't had a footprint within popular culture for 26 years. This isn't like "G.I. Joe" or "Transformers", to my knowledge this show disappeared entirely and now director Jon M. Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) who seems to be carving out '80s nostalgia as his cinematic M.O. will direct a live-action adaptation. Written by Ryan Landels ("The Lxd: The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers"), the film will center on Jerrica Jem Benton ("Nashville" and Sharknado star Aubrey Peeples), an orphaned teenage girl who becomes an online recording sensation, and she and her sisters embark on a music-driven scavenger hunt - one that sends them on an adventure across Los Angeles -...

Hasbro Launches ‘Jem and the Holograms’ Movie With ‘GI Joe’ Director
This is pretty weird, but I bet it works out because it’s just too niche and crazy not to be interesting regardless of if you like Jem and the Holograms and old 80s cartoon about a digital pop star.

Hasbro launched production on it’s Jem movie with a video featuring producer Jason Blum, GI Joe: Reatliation/Never Say Never director Jon Chu and Scooter Braun, Justin Beiber’s manager for Raymond-Braun Media Group with Usher.

The movie will start shooting this spring based off a script by Ryan Landels which “revolve[s] around an orphaned teenage girl who becomes an online recording sensation, she and her sisters embark on a music-driven scavenger hunt –- one that sends them on an adventure across Los Angeles in an attempt to unlock a final message left by her father.”

Bruce Willis, Dwayne Johnson, Lee Byung-hun, Elodie Yung, Channing Tatum, and Adrianne Palicki in G.I. Joe : Conspiration (2013)
Jon M. Chu Rounds Up Jem And The Holograms
Bruce Willis, Dwayne Johnson, Lee Byung-hun, Elodie Yung, Channing Tatum, and Adrianne Palicki in G.I. Joe : Conspiration (2013)
If it wasn’t for the convincing looks on their faces in the video, we’d frankly wonder whether G.I. Joe: Retaliation / Step Up director Jon M. Chu and low-budget horror producer Jason Blum were pulling an early April Fool’s Day prank by announcing a live-action version of the Jem And The Holograms toy line and cartoon. But no: they appear to be serious, launching the video as a way of connecting with fans of the ‘80s show and asking for their input as a sort of Kickstarter for creativity. (They’re very clear that they’re not asking for money). If you’re raising your eyebrows at this point and wondering what all this Jem stuff is about, the Hasbro-spawned ‘toon ran for three years from 1985 and followed the adventures of Jerrica Benton, Aka Jem, pop singer and heroine. Ryan Landels has written a new script for the...
