Critical Role is the latest creator act filling movie theaters
Image
Movie theater chains are looking to rebound by bringing in more creator events, and the latest group capitalizing on that trend is Critical Role. The streaming show — in which a cast of professional voice actors plays role-playing games — is hitting movie theaters in the U.S. and Canada thanks to a deal with Fathom Entertainment.

The theatrical event will feature rebroadcasts of four Critical Role live shows. The group is currently on tour to celebrate the tenth anniversary of its show, which was initially inspired by the voice actors’ Dungeons & Dragons sessions. A show in Chicago has already occurred, but upcoming dates in Sydney (June 19), Melbourne (June 25), Indianapolis (Aug. 2), and New York (Oct. 7) will all get the movie theater treatment.

Fathom will host its screenings shortly after the corresponding live shows conclude. According to Variety, the run will reach 800 theaters in total.

‘The Chosen’ Creator Prepares Fans for the Last Supper: ‘I Don’t Love Filming, I Love Having Filmed’
Image
It’s only a week into shooting Season 6 of his hit indie Christian TV series “The Chosen,” and Dallas Jenkins is already feeling the toll of his most demanding shoot yet.

After eight years developing and shooting 40 episodes that go deeper into the Gospel story, Jenkins has arrived at the most famous part of Jesus Christ’s tale: his crucifixion. It has been brought to life many times over the decades in films ranging from “Jesus Christ Superstar” to “The Passion of the Christ,” but doing it on a crowdfunded budget brings its own unique challenges.

“Our schedule is 20 days longer than it normally is, because we have so many night shoots. In the Gospel, there’s three hours of darkness that takes place when Jesus is on the cross,” Jenkins told TheWrap. “Our budget is bigger than ever, but not in a good way. We’ve had to go...

‘Sinners’ Surges Past ‘Minecraft’ at Box Office With $45.6 Million Opening Weekend
Image
After industry estimates had the third weekend of “A Minecraft Movie” topping the critically acclaimed “Sinners” at the Easter box office on Saturday morning, the two Warner Bros. films have swapped places atop the box office charts as Ryan Coogler’s horror film is now estimated for a $45.6 million opening weekend.

Should this result hold, “Sinners” will pass the $44.3 million opening of Jordan Peele’s 2022 film “Nope” for the highest opening of an original film since the pandemic. Not only is that highly likely, it wouldn’t be surprising if the final weekend total for “Sinners” is higher than this current estimate given that it is enjoying some of the most spectacular critical and audience buzz given to any film in recent memory.

It starts with a straight A from opening night audiences on CinemaScore, the first given to a horror film since James Cameron’s “Aliens” in 1986. It then...

It Was a Very Good Box Office Weekend for Jesus
Image
He is risen indeed. One week before Easter, three of the top 10 titles at the box office this weekend were faith-based stories about the life of Jesus Christ, including Angel Studios’ animated “The King of Kings” as well as “The Chosen: Last Supper” Parts 2 and 3, as released by Fathom Entertainment.

“The King of Kings” opened to $19.3 million this weekend from 3,200 screens, finishing No. 2 behind “A Minecraft Movie,” which had a strong second weekend and only dropped 50 percent for another staggering $80.6 million haul, bringing its domestic total to $280.9 million.

And for “The Chosen,” Part 3 of Season 5 opened this weekend and finished sixth, bringing in $6 million domestic, while Part 2 held on to the No. 10 spot and made $932,000. To date through its third weekend in theaters, all three sets of episodes have grossed a combined $36.3 million, including $19.3 million for Part 1. This coming weekend for Easter Sunday, all three parts will be available in...

‘A Minecraft Movie’ Becomes 2025 Box Office’s Top Grossing Movie After $80.6 Million 2nd Weekend
Image
While a franchise title still leads the box office with Warner Bros./Legendary’s “A Minecraft Movie” continuing its excellent run, a quartet of new releases is filling out the rest of the top 5, and none of them are sequels.

“Minecraft” is proving that it is not a frontloaded title at all with an $80.6 million second weekend, a total that was considered to be an optimistic outcome for its opening weekend in initial pre-release projections. But with millions of younger moviegoers excited to see the film thanks to memes and viral videos taken in theaters, it is proving to be the spring hit that theaters were starving for in March.

Overseas grosses are just as strong with $79.6 million, giving “Minecraft” a $269.6 million overseas total led by $39.8 million from the UK. Combined with $281 million from domestic theaters, the film has a running total of $550 million and is on pace to become Warner’s eighth $1 billion hit,...

Box Office: ‘Minecraft’ Mints More Gold With $80.6M, ‘King of Kings’ Leads New Films With $19M
Image
There’s no slowing down A Minecraft Movie, which hurtled past the $550 million mark at the global box office on its way to likely becoming the first title of 2025 to join the $1 billion club.

The Warner Bros. family event pic easily stayed No. 1 in its second weekend with a huge domestic haul of $80.6 million. It has now earned $281 million in North America and $296.6 million overseas for a worldwide total of $550.6 million. The foreign tally includes $20.5 million from China, one of the best showings in recent memory for a Hollywood title (Legendary East is handling the film there). However, Minecraft did tumble 68 percent in its second weekend after the Chinese government said it would further restrict film imports amid the ongoing tariff war with the Trump administration.

Thanks in large measure to the astonishing performance of A Minecraft Movie, box office revenue in North America is once again on par with...

Angel Studios On ‘The King Of Kings’ Appeal As Jesus Story With Charles Dickens & Starry Cast Eyes Top Animated Faith-Based Debut – Specialty Preview
Image
The King of Kings will be Angel Studios’ top opening since juggernaut Sound of Freedom in 2023 and may well beat the reigning champ for highest-grossing faith-based animated debut, besting DreamWorks Animation’s The Prince of Egypt from 1998. Deadline asks distribution chief Brandon Purdie about the response from audiences and theaters.

Michael Angarano, writer, director and star of road trip comedy Sacramento, unveils the 10-year genesis of his second feature, out today in moderate release. The Minecraft-fueled box office is looking much brighter after that grim first quarter.

With an estimated $15 million in presales, The King of Kings boasts the widest opening weekend of any Angel Studios’ film, at 3,205 theaters. “We’re excited,” Purdie said as the film eyes a possible No. 2 spot at a domestic box office that surged into action last week.

Purdie called Sound of Freedom an “outlier. It had so much cultural intensity around it,...

‘A Minecraft Movie’ Posts Fourth-Biggest Tuesday In April, Will Stack $65M+ In Second Weekend – Box Office Preview
Image
Better late than never. Hollywood major studios are catching up with the fact that’s it’s spring break and that there’s an audience out there for movies, not just with Warner Bros/Legendary’s monolithic A Minecraft Movie driving business, set for a second weekend -60% or $65M, but also five wide entries hitting the marketplace before the traditionally lucrative Easter weekend of April 18-20 (that’s when Warners opens Ryan Coogler’s period vampire movie Sinners starring Michael B. Jordan).

Comscore reports that 10% of K-12 schools are off this Friday and 1% colleges, moving to 72% K-12 off, 28% colleges on break on Good Friday, April 18.

Minecraft notched the fourth-biggest Tuesday in April yesterday with $12.7M, after 2019’s Avengers: Endgame ($33.1M), 2023’s The Super Mario Bros Movie ($15.4M) and 2015’s F7 ($13.3M). The running cume through five days (Friday-Tuesday) is $185.4M. Although that’s 9% lower than the first five days...

‘A Minecraft Movie’ Sets Video Game Box Office Record With $157 Million Opening
Image
Not even the most optimistic projections for Warner Bros./Legendary’s “A Minecraft Movie” had it on the threshold of a bigger opening weekend than “Barbie,” but that is where we are as it has set a new video game adaptation record with a breathtaking $157 million from 4,269 theaters and a global launch of $301 million.

After weeks of poor turnout at movie theaters and the worst March box office outside the pandemic since the 1990s, “Minecraft” has had the same drought-busting effect on the marketplace that Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” had last summer. By the end of the weekend, the year-to-date box office total is expected to go from 11% down year-over-year to 6% and should continue to shrink with an April market that will be far more robust than last year’s.

The “Jumanji”-esque adventure film stars Jack Black as Steve, the player avatar in the hit video game from...

Fathom Sets ‘Clueless’, ‘Rocky IV’, ‘Indiana Jones’, More For 2025 Big Screen Classics Lineup – CinemaCon
Image
The rebranded Fathom Entertainment, which has been gobbling up an increasing share of box office, has set special anniversary presentations of Clueless, Rocky IV, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Sound of Music, Sunset Boulevard and more for its annual Big Screen Classics series, following a bang with The Goonies in January for that film’s 40th anniversary.

Since Covid, repertory has exploded as a staple of theaters.

Films will be showcased with special introductions by cinema film critic and historian Leonard Maltin for the third year.

Ray Nutt, CEO of the specialty distributor, speaking at the annual exhibition conference CinemaCon in Las Vegas, said the company’s growth over the past two years is largely — nearly 60% — due to leveraging repertory films, calling them a “bedrock element of our content offerings.”

The Big Screen Classics lineup includes: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (June 15 and June 18); Clueless 30th Anniversary...

Sony Opens CinemaCon With a Vow to Help With Ticket Costs and Theatrical Windows
Image
After taking last year off, Sony Pictures returned to CinemaCon to kick off the 2025 edition of the annual trade show for movie theaters. As usual, film chairman Tom Rothman had plenty of barbs to sling at those who would declare the big screen dead, but this time he also had some big promises to help with two issues facing exhibitors: price and windowing.

“I have one word for all of you. It’s a magic word. It’s a secret mantra you might utter during your morning meditation: Tuesday,” Rothman said. “I ask you, why is Tuesday different from any other day? It’s because Tuesday is where the grosses are higher…and that’s because the tickets are cheaper. But what if Monday was also like Tuesday? Or Wednesday?”

But Rothman’s suggestion was coupled with a promise to meet theaters halfway, noting that “cost and windows can work...

Box Office Upset: Blue-Collar Drama ‘A Working Man’ Beats ‘Snow White’ With $15M Opening
Image
Middle America is taking charge of the box office, where David Ayer’s blue-collar drama A Working Man beat Snow White in a surprise upset with a better-than-expected domestic opening of $15.2 million from 3,262 theaters.

Snow White took in $14.2 million from 4,200 locations, a steep decline of 66 percent as the live-action update continues be dogged by poor word-of-mouth and controversial headlines over its titular star, Rachel Zegler. The film’s domestic tally throughout Sunday is a muted $66.8 million domestically and $143.1 million globally.

However, Disney isn’t waving the white flag of defeat, and says its movie could still avoid biting the poison apple because of rolling spring breaks over the next few weeks and little competition in terms of films targeting girls and females. (Next week’s A Minecraft Movie is expected to skew male.)

But the film’s dismal performance in its second weekend is more bad news for Disney and...

‘A Working Man’ Swipes No. 1 From Sinking ‘Snow White’ With $15 Million Box Office Opening
Image
While a big second weekend drop was expected for Disney’s “Snow White,” it was also expected to hold on to the No. 1 spot. But that may not happen, as Amazon MGM’s action film “The Working Man” starring Jason Statham is set to swipe the top spot with an industry estimated $15.6 million opening weekend.

“A Working Man” is doing this with nearly a thousand fewer screens than “Snow White,” earning $5.5 million from 3,262 theaters on opening day. Critics were tepid on this film compared to Amazon and Statham’s last film, “The Beekeeper,” giving it a 55% Rotten Tomatoes score. But the film’s largely male opening day audience was generally pleased, giving it a B on CinemaScore to go with a 91% audience Rt score.

“Snow White,” meanwhile, is sinking by 67% from its $42 million opening weekend, earning an industry estimated $13.8 million. With $66.4 million domestic, it will struggle just to reach $100 million...

Fathom Events Rebrands, Heading To Record 2024
Image
Fathom Events is on track for a record-breaking 2024 with gross revenue of $145+ million, up 45% from $100 million a year ago, and plans to rebrand to Fathom Entertainment starting in January to better reflect its mission.

The 20-year-old distributor’s strong numbers reflect in large part an expansion from core and primarily events-based and limited engagements in recent years to include more special engagements with longer release windows. The new name, it said, reflects that evolution and “the start of a bold, new chapter for the company in the rapidly changing media and entertainment landscape.”

“With the significant decline in volume of major motion picture theatrical releases post-covid and the proliferation of streaming options at-home, present day audiences are constantly on the lookout for something fresh and different and uniquely relevant at the movie theatres,” said Fathom CEO Ray Nutt. “Consumer enthusiasm and embrace of specialty content in theatres has translated into Fathom’s highest-grossing year ever.

Image
Fathom Events, which puts movies, TV series, concerts and other events into movie theaters for limited runs, saw a record-breaking year for limited releases in 2024, with revenues increasing 45% to more than $145 million. Fathom’s strong year comes as re-releases of classic titles are helping bring moviegoers into theaters even in a time of uneven release schedules for new movies. The company’s most recent home run was this year’s 15th anniversary re-release of “Coraline,” which totaled $34 million at the box office, becoming Fathom’s biggest grosser ever.

‘The Wild Robot’ Soars, #6 ‘Megalopolis’ Only $4 Million (but Strong IMAX Response)
Image
Whatever doubts were raised about the continued health of animated releases after last week’s tepid start for “Transformers One” (Paramount) were calmed by “The Wild Robot” (Universal). #1 with $35 million, the DreamWorks’ production exceeded expectations to claim the top spot. And in doing so, it bucked the trend of cartoon features being all franchise (mostly sequel) all the time.

Not that originality, even when packaged in one of the most publicized films of the year and created by one of the most successful and respected filmmakers of all time, is by itself a draw. Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” (Lionsgate) found limited interest with $4 million in 1,854 theaters. Coupled with a horrific D- Cinemascore (surprising since it has found some critical support), it would appear to have limited future prospects.

That’s a bloody nice showing as fans turned out for the cult film starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost playing exclusively in Dolby Cinema at 133 AMC theaters for a limited engagement. AMC Burbank was the highest grossing. The re-release is fully remastered with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos for the first time ever.

Shaun of the Dead, from 2024, written by Wright and Pegg, quickly became a cultural phenomenon in the annals of horror-comedy history. Pegg’s Shaun is a 30-something loser working living in the outskirts of London who must rise to the occasion when the town is inexplicably overrun with zombies,

It’s the latest re-rerelease to stalk the box office with animated...

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)
‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Crossing $600M In $3.6 Billion Summer — Labor Day Box Office
Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)
Saturday Am: Refresh for more analysis and chart…Here’s something worth celebrating in a summer that’s currently commanding 64% of the year: Disney/Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine is bound to cross $600M by Labor Day. Estimates for the four-day are between $19M-$20M. Even on the low end, that gets the Shawn Levy directed/produced/co-written feature to that threshold.

“Naaaanccy….”. Dennis Quaid is Ronald Reagan

Most of the newcomers aren’t making a mark dollar wise, however, Showbiz Direct’s Reagan landed an A CinemaScore and 4 1/2 stars on PostTrak. Current 4-day projection is $9M in 4th place at 2,754 locations after a $2.6M Friday. As expected this movie is playing to the middle of the country with Icon Cinema in Edmond, Ok the top grossing location so far this weekend with $10K. The South is also dominant for the Sean McNamara directed movie. Men/women split is 51%/49% with a 77% definite recommend from audiences.

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Revives, ‘Alien: Romulus’ Plunges, and We Lose the $100 Million Weekend
Image
With $92 million this weekend, domestic gross for August should equal 2023 or come close for the first time since March. Holdovers get the credit: Three new wide releases grossed $19 million total, for about 20 percent of the weekend’s gross.

“Blink Twice” (Amazon MGM), the directorial debut of Zoë Kravitz and starring Channing Tatum, did best. to place fourth, with an underwhelming $7.3 million. With a cost of $20 million and Amazon streaming ahead, this edgy story of a billionaire hosting a group of young women at his island hideout at least got enough attention to elevate interest, despite a not entirely strong start in theaters.

Last week’s top two Disney titles swapped places. “Deadpool & Wolverine,” dropping only 39 percent in week five, took in $18.3 million for $577 million domestic, far above expectations and the best Marvel title since “Avengers: Endgame.” It projects to $625 million-$640 million, which will make it #2 for the summer behind...

Disney Leads with R-Rated Fox Franchises as ‘Alien’ and ‘Deadpool’ Sequels Rule the Box Office
Image
An unexpectedly strong August continues with the usual (Disney films lead the way) and the unusual (both are R-rated). They’re also a testament to M&a strategy: Both are franchises that Disney acquired from 20th Century-Fox.

Nearly a half century after the Ridley Scott original, “Alien: Romulus” opened at #1 with $41.5 million, and “Deadpool & Wolverine” is #2 with $29 million. Both characters were assets Disney acquired in its $71.8 billion 2019 takeover of the Hollywood legacy studio, Fox.

That synergy extends to “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” the sixth-biggest film of this summer. Throw in “The First Omen” and a reissue of “The Phantom Menace,” and Fox content has provided $825 million of Disney’s $1.467 billion industry-leading gross so far this year.

With three films in the top 10 (#8 is “Inside Out” from Pixar with its $642 million to date) and the distributor represents nearly 54 percent of the weekend’s gross. Its return to dominance...

Box Office: ‘Alien: Romulus’ Hatches $18 Million Opening Day
Image
“Alien: Romulus” slithered to $18 million from 3,885 locations across Friday and preview screenings — a substantial haul that suggests that 20th Century’s latest entry in the survival thriller series will come in north of the studio’s projections and land around a $40 million debut across opening weekend. The killer sci-fi feature also gets a boost from Imax and other premium large-format auditoriums. The solid start marks a victory lap for Disney, which has ruled theaters through the summer season with the two biggest hits of the year, “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Inside Out 2.”

“Romulus” was originally greenlit for a Hulu debut, but Disney shifted the Fede Alvarez-helmed production to a theatrical rollout before principal photography began. Nearly 50 years old, the “Alien” series is still a prestige brandname to horror and sci-fi fans, and they are rolling out for the opening weekend. The franchise’s previous two entries, prequels “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant,...

Marvel Studios Founder Bringing His New Universe to Comic-Con
Image
When you walk into David Maisel’s Los Angeles office, the first thing you see is a statue of Iron Man, one of the most recognizable superheroes in the world. Hanging on the wall above him is an illustration of a furry faced character named Grell, a hero far fewer people recognize, but who is getting the spotlight this week at San Diego Comic-Con.

Iron Man represents Maisel’s past as the founding chairman of Marvel Studios, where he had the idea for characters such as Iron Man, Captain America and Thor to live in a shared cinematic universe. Grell represents his future at Mythos Studios, where he is plotting a new cinematic universe called Ekos that will feature not just Grell, but potentially hundreds of other characters.

Just as Iron Man made a splash at San Diego Comic-Con in 2007 with a panel for Marvel Studios’ first movie, Maisel is...

Laika’s ‘Coraline’ 3D Remaster Gets August Release Date From Fathom in the U.S., Trafalgar Releasing Internationally
Image
Henry Selick’s modern classic “Coraline” turns 15 this year, and a new 3D remaster of the stop-motion feature (announced in February) will get a worldwide theatrical release this fall by Fathom in the U.S and Trafalgar Releasing in the rest of the world.

Limited screenings will begin on August 15 and feature an early glimpse of Laika’s upcoming film, “Wildwood.” Ticket sales kick off on June 21. A 2D version of the film will also be available to exhibitors.

“Coraline”

In 2023, Fathom re-released the original version of “Coraline” in the U.S., which netted over $7 million at the box office, a record for the event-based distributor. The film is also screening in this year’s Annecy Classics program, marking a return to the French festival where it won the Cristal for a feature film in 2009.

“Coraline” was written by Neil Gaiman and Selick and stars voice actors Dakota Fanning, Ian McShane,...

‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ Rides Alone on a Record-Low June Weekend
Image
Theaters will live to fight another day. “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” (Sony) provided more than half of the gross this weekend, taking #1 with $56 million. That isn’t a record for the franchise (with previous films at lower ticket prices), but it is a critical victory for the industry at a time it desperately needs them.

Will Smith’s first wide release since his catastrophic Oscar behavior in 2022 represents a triumph for star power, franchise filmmaking, action titles, and titles that draw from minority audiences (over two thirds for the weekend were Black and Latino). Most of all, it was a vital sign that underperformance for highly touted summer films isn’t a given.

In the face of rising industry panic, an under-$40 million opening for “Ride or Die” (its 2020 predecessor opened to $62 million) could have ratched the doom and despair to toxic levels. Instead, it blew past tracking projections...

Box Office: ‘Dune: Part Two’ Rides to Impressive $32 Million Opening Day
Image
It’s a “Dune” boon for the box office. Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s “Dune: Part Two” touched down with an impressive $32.1 million gross on opening day from 4,071 locations, a figure that also includes $12 million from Thursday evening and earlier event preview screenings.

That’s already the biggest opening weekend of the year, surpassing the $28.6 million three-day total of “Bob Marley: One Love.” “Dune: Part Two” has also nearly matched the $41 million debut that its predecessor landed back in October 2021, when Warner Bros. simultaneously launched the film on its streamer (né HBO Max) and the theatrical landscape was still in a state of heavy rebuild as Covid lockdowns eased. Even with those caveats though, that’s a remarkable step-up for a heady, epic-length follow-up.

The question now is how high can “Dune” go. Heading into the weekend, industry projections for the Denis Villeneuve-directed feature had ballparked an opening between $70 million and $80 million,...

Box-Office Weekend: Bob Marley Claims Crown
Image
A new film has taken control of the box-office weekend top ten as Bob Marley: One Love managed to edge out Madame Web by $4.3 million over the last three days to claim first place.

In its inaugural weekend in release, the biopic Bob Marley: One Love took in $27.7 million for Paramount Pictures, giving the film a first-week total of $45.6 million. Second place was claimed by Madame Web which made Columbia Pictures $15.2 million over the weekend and an opening week total of $23.4 million. Meanwhile, last weekend’s top film, Argylle dropped to third place where it added $4.7 million, bringing the Universal Pictures International product’s three-week total to $36.5 million. Climbing two spots to finish in fourth this weekend was Universal Pictures’ Migration which took in $3.8 million, raising its nine-week total to $114.8 million for the studio. The second Fathom Events release of The Chosen (this week being episodes four through six from...

Box Office: Worst Super Bowl Weekend in Decades Outside of Covid, ‘Argylle’ Ekes Out $6.5M Lead
Image
The Super Bowl sacked the domestic box office this weekend as revenue fell to historic lows due to the weekend-long frenzy over Sunday’s showdown between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas, and an ongoing winter slowdown in major Hollywood studio titles.

Combined ticket sales clocked in at an estimated $40 million, the worst showing for Super Bowl weekend in more than three decades outside of 2021, when many theaters were still closed because of the Covid-19 crisis, according to Comscore. Revenue in 2021 was $7.7 million.

The last time revenue was lower was several instances in the mid- to late -’80s, per Comscore.

There is an upside: Hollywood studios aren’t obsessing too much about weekend grosses. Instead, many are getting ready to drop splashy — and pricey — new spots for their movies.

Back to the the box office. This year, Matthew Vaughn’s big budget bust, Argylle,...

Weekend Box Office: The Beekeeper Takes First!
Image
The weekend numbers are here and with it we are seeing the beginnings of how much the Writers and Actors strikes are going to affect the 2024 box office as there were zero wide new releases. Granted, January is generally a slow time and most studios sit this weekend out due to not wanting to compete with the NFL Championship games, but even last year saw Neon release their Brandon Cronenberg film Infinity Pool while Fathom events knew their faith based audience would show up for Left Behind: Rise of the Antichrist.

But let’s not bury the lead: in its third week of release The Beekeeper has pulled off the upset and won the weekend with $7.4 million. That is quite the feat as R rated action films have had a really tough time at the box office in recent years. In our Thursday predictions, we thought the NFL playoffs may...

Fathom Events Reports Record Revenue of $93 Million, Fueled by Faith-Based Hits Like ‘The Blind’ (Exclusive)
Image
Fathom Events, the company best known for bringing theater, opera, live events and concerts to screens, is currently on track for gross revenues of over $93 million. Despite the fact that the exhibition space has yet to fully recover from the Covid pandemic, Fathom is enjoying the best year in its history — it will surpass sales from 2019, previously the highest-grossing year in company history, by 116%. For further context, Fathom reported revenues of $68 million in 2022.

So what’s behind the surge? Fathom is chalking up the strong results to a pivot in business strategy for the company, one that saw it introduce a “specialty distribution” model. The goal was to bring a wider array of content to cinemas beyond the productions of the Metropolitan Opera that helped put Fathom on the map. It’s one that saw Fathom distribute faith-based films like “The Blind,” as well as release episodes of “The Chosen,...

‘The Blind’ Is Now Fathom Events’ Highest-Grossing Release Ever
Image
The Blind is now the most successful release in the history of Fathom Events, as the faith-based feature has grossed $15.7 million at the North American box office as of Monday.

The film is Fathom’s first to see a longer theatrical run than its traditional event cinema releases. Originally slated for an eight-day run as part of Fathom’s new specialty distribution model, it was extended twice, Fathom said, and held a steady position in the top 10 for the duration of its more than three weeks in cinemas.

The Blind was produced by Tread Lively and Gnd Media Group. Andrew Hyatt directs the back-story of the star of Duck Dynasty, Phil Robertson. In 1960s Louisiana, Robertson falls in love and starts a family, but his demons soon threaten to tear everyone apart. As he seeks to conquer the shame of his past, he ultimately finds redemption in an unlikely place.

Sundance Doc ‘Beyond Utopia’ Scores U.S. Theatrical Release From Fathom Events and Roadside Attractions (Exclusive)
Image
Fathom Events and Roadside Attractions are teaming up to release Madeleine Gavin’s Sundance award-winning documentary “Beyond Utopia.”

The film takes viewers on a harrowing journey as one family risks everything to escape from North Korea. The pact comes after the film made its world premiere in the U.S. documentary competition section at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where it won the doc audience award.

While the film attracted plenty of interest from distribution companies following its debut in Park City, the market slowdown has led to deals taking longer than usual to nail down.

Roadside acquired domestic rights to “Beyond Utopia” and will release the film theatrically in select markets later this fall, thereby qualifying the docu for Oscar consideration. Fathom Events will release the film in more than 600 theaters nationwide during a special two-night only event on Oct. 23-24.

Using hidden camera footage, Gavin tells the...

Fathom Is Expanding Beyond Faith-Based and Opera Events
Image
Duck Dynasty and the Metropolitan Opera are two very different cultural phenomena, but they have at least one thing in common: Fathom Events, the unique and prolific theatrical distributor based in Denver.

Over the past 20 years, Fathom has mastered the art of finding audiences for one-off cinematic events, from live broadcasts of opera, stage plays and live concert pics to anniversary rereleases of classic Hollywood films. A groundbreaking partnership with The Metropolitan Opera put Fathom on the map. Launched in 2006, The Met: Live in HD program, which sees about 10 operas a year beamed into theaters on Saturdays and Wednesdays, has generated more than $205 million in box office sales and consistently lands on a weekend’s top 10 list.

The company has also made a big impression in the faith-based and anime spaces (again, two disparate genres). Fathom ranked No. 9 on the list of top distributors at the 2022 domestic box office, with...
