More than 35 years later, DC is returning to the world of Tim Burton's "Batman" for a brand new adventure. While we're not going to see Michael Keaton suit up as the Caped Crusader on screen again, Penguin Random House is publishing a brand new novel titled "Batman: Revolution" that takes place in the continuity of Burton's films. Notably, this new book will introduce a new version of a classic villain -- The Riddler.
Written by John Jackson Miller, this new novel serves as a follow-up to last year's "Batman: Resurrection," which filled in the gaps between "Batman" and "Batman Returns." As was first revealed by Comicbook.com, "Revolution" is due to hit shelves on October 28, 2025 and will similarly look to fill in some gaps in the Burton universe. The synopsis for the novel helps set the table for what's...

Every Batman movie has a "thing." Tim Burton's 1989 "Batman" created a blueprint for future superhero films. His follow-up, "Batman Returns," saw Burton usher in the franchise era by letting his freak flag fly, upsetting parents and McDonald's board members, who'd plastered Danny DeVito's grotesque Penguin across their Happy Meals, in the process. 1997's "Batman & Robin" is remembered for nearly killing the franchise entirely, while Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" trilogy is remembered for reinvigorating the character for a new generation. In 2022, Matt Reeves proved that there was simply no end to the ways in which Batman could be reinvented, delivering a darker take on the character that provided a welcome antidote to the CGI-fests being pumped out by Marvel.
But 1995's "Batman Forever" sort of falls between the cracks. An often-overlooked entry in the saga, Joel Schumacher's first Batman movie was a big deal when it first debuted,...

British actor Henry Cavill and the late American director Joel Schumacher are both largely known for their involvement with bringing DC Comics' two most iconic characters to the big screen. Schumacher directed the infamous pair of blockbusters Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997), which, though commercially successful, were both negatively received by fans and critics for their campy treatment of the Caped Crusader, while Cavill has starred as Superman in the now-retired DC Extended Universe, beginning with Man of Steel (2013).
But, in the 16-year period between the releases of Batman & Robin and Man of Steel, Schumacher and Cavill collaborated for a film that lay completely outside the realm of comic books: the 2009 horror movie Blood Creek. The film centers on two brothers, played by Cavill and Dominic Purcell, who find themselves trapped on a West Virginia farm with a family of German-American immigrants who are holding a dark and...

Chris Sanders is a one-of-a-kind artist.
As a kid, looking through various “art of” books for the 1990s Disney classics, you could always pick out a Chris Sanders illustration or a Chris Sanders storyboard, even without a little note explaining that it was him. It was just obvious. It wasn’t just the style of his illustrations or drawings; it was how much story and emotion was conveyed, breathlessly, with every line.
His latest film as a writer/director, “The Wild Robot,” contains all that we have come to expect (and love) from Sanders – an art style that boldly pushes the medium forward, characters that are so easy to love and root for, and a truthfulness to the occasionally harsh realities of life that are never dwelled on but are instead depicted with frank objectivity.

Batman is one of the most popular superheroes in the world. The incredibly smart, tactical, and disciplined vigilante is one of the few heroes who can stand his ground even amongst overpowered superheroes like Superman, Wonder Woman, and more. His backstory is one of the most loved classics and he has an incredible villain.
The Caped Crusader has been played by numerous actors over the years in both live-action and animation. While his live-action outings have faced controversies regularly, voice actors like Kevin Conroy have cemented themselves as the definitive version of the character. Remember Batman Forever? if you’re old enough, I guess…Joel Schumacher’s first Bat-picture turns 30 this year (yikes). I just happen to be old enough, and I recall the movie being a huge deal even before it came out. Both Batman and Batman Returns were huge hits, Jim Carrey was the trendiest actor alive, and most importantly, no one knew what kind of director Schumacher was yet. His tendency to lean into the silly and campy elements of the Batman mythos would eventually get him punished for defying Edgy 90s Culture, but for those few weeks in the summer of 1995, Batman Forever was hot stuff. And any hit movie got toys — lots of toys! Batman Forever got plastic action figures and a Batmobile and everything. There were plenty of places to sell them too — Toys R Us and Kb Toys and all sorts of massive brick and mortar outlets...

Hindsight is everything, especially when talking about a film like Batman Forever. However, when the Joel Schumacher film was first released in 1995, there wasn't much retrospective knowledge or expectations for what would soon be one of the most infamous films in the live-action Batman filmography. So, it's hard to blame anyone who was excited about the film, especially following the acclaimed movie that is Batman Returns. While plenty of people are dismissive of the film now, many grew up with it and were highly excited about the movie at the time. Thankfully, for both those fans and those who have a newfound admiration for Batman Forever, there is now a new opportunity to collect recreations of vintage memorabilia for the film.

Yet another adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera is in development for Disney+, and the project may now be honing in on its female lead.
According to scooper Mttsh, Rachel Zegler is being eyed to play Christine, the object of the titular Opera Ghost's obsession. Whether this means she's actually in talks for the role or simply someone the studio is interested in is not clear.
Titled Phantom, this YA take on the classic novel by Gaston Leroux will be directed and executive produced by Kenny Ortega, who has led two major Disney franchises with High School Musical and The Descendants.
It doesn't sound like Ortega's version will be changing up the basic premise, with the story focusing on Erik, "a mysterious, disfigured musical genius who lives beneath the Paris Opera House. He becomes obsessed with a young soprano, Christine, and manipulates events to make her the star of the opera.

I, like so many other fans of comic books and superheroes, love Batman. His story is one that remains inspiring even if the circumstances around his life aren't relatable. Nevertheless, the idea of a normal person pushing against the odds every night is something we all endure, and no matter how outlandish his stories can be, it grounds the character in a profound way. But for a character that explored every entertainment medium available, it would take almost 40 years since Batman: The Movie for the Caped Crusader to be explored in a more grounded way.

Val Kilmer celebrated his 65th birthday today, and fans took the opportunity to celebrate with the ever-popular actor by renewing calls for Warner Bros. Discovery to finally release Joel Schumacher’s fabled Director’s Cut of Batman Forever.

Matthew McConaughey got his big break as a leading drama actor, thanks to his role as attorney Jake Brigance in A Time to Kill. It was Joel Schumacher’s second film adaptation of a John Grisham novel. Interestingly, the studio initially wanted a recognizable name in the role of the young lawyer. The director was among the few who believed McConaughey could pull off a leading role.

Released in 1995, Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever has earned its place in history as one of the more controversial entries in the Batman film franchise—though it doesn’t surpass the infamy of Batman & Robin, which arrived a few years later. However, the movie continues to spark interest even decades later. In fact, 2025 will bring an exclusive retro toy collection inspired by Batman Forever as part of the film’s 30th-anniversary celebration.

Released in 1995, Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever will go down in history as one of the worst Batman films of all time, although this list is topped by the horror that was Batman & Robin, released several years later. Several iconic moments from Batman movies either originated or were celebrated in the iconic Batman: The Animated Series. While Batman: Tas premiered in 1992, the live-action Batman films had already begun carving their legacy in the Dcu, starting with Batman (1989). As the movies evolved, they borrowed narrative elements and characterization from the animated series, which, in turn, left an indelible mark on the comics. Similarly, Batman: Tas used select scenes from the live-action movies to help ground the series, symbiotically forging a definitive Batman mythology.
Few animated adaptations have captured the essence of their comic book roots as effectively as Batman: The Animated Series. With its gothic art deco style, compelling storytelling, and nuanced characters, the series set a high standard for how the Dark Knight should be portrayed. Its influence rippled beyond animation, directly shaping the Batman mythos in comics, live-action films, and the Dcu timeline. These memorable scenes from live-action Batman movies evoke,...

Joel Schumacher's Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997) may have been divisive, but they still featured a lot of beautifully poetic lines of dialogue that are worth celebrating. Schumacher’s Batman movies brought a lighter, campier tone to the Caped Crusader’s cinematic adventures, following Tim Burton’s darker interpretations. These DC films have gained a cult following over the years for their over-the-top style, colorful visuals, and memorable quotations. Within their playful absurdity, these movies offered some surprisingly poignant and witty moments.
Schumacher’s Batman Forever and Batman & Robin marked a departure from the gothic sensibilities of Tim Burton's Batman and Batman Returns. Embracing a more comic book-inspired, neon aesthetic, these films leaned into humor, exaggerated characters, and dazzling set pieces. While often criticized for their campiness, Schumacher’s movies reflect a lighter side of the Dark Knight that hadn’t been seen in the Dcu timeline in decades.

Some props from Batman Forever have recently been put up for sale, and I can't help but be tempted by the DC Universe listing for The Riddler's costume. While Batman Forever was not the greatest of the live-action Batman films, it did something special in marrying the campy styles of the 1960s Adam West iteration with the dark, Gothic style of Tim Burton's Batman. With bright neon lights and rubber suits, director Joel Schumacher presented a genuinely unique look at the city of Gotham.
Batman's rogues galleries in Schumacher’s films were refreshingly strange adaptations, translated from some of the wackiest ideas from the comics. The comic book movies of the MCU, the Dcu, and beyond have occasionally been known to damage the careers of their directors. Before the beginning of the MCUs movie timeline helped establish superhero cinema as a dominant force at the box office, comic book movies were often considered especially risky endeavors. Even in the years since, there have been notable missteps in the genre, resulting in films that fail to earn their directors any plaudits.
When comic book movies cant replicate the success of the movies of the MCU, or otherwise fail to earn critical praise, it reflects poorly on its director. In certain cases, this actually significantly impacts their career, harming their prospects moving forward. In these cases, it would seem that superhero movies have the potential to be just as damaging as they can be successful. With that in mind, here are 10 superhero movies that damaged directors careers.

“Screamboat,” a horror-comedy reimagining of Disney’s Steamboat Willie character that recently entered the public domain, has announced final additions to its cast ahead of a sales screening at the American Film Market in Las Vegas, Nev. In the world of Formula 1, the sport often demands much more than just speed and skill. It demands sacrifice, resilience, and sometimes the ability to navigate through grief. When Ayrton Senna tragically passed away during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, the impact on his fellow drivers was profound, especially on Michael Schumacher, who was just beginning to rise as one of the sport’s most formidable talents.

True, Senna was the leader of his generation—driven, competitive, and intensely passionate. Schumacher, a young upstart, was beginning to challenge Senna’s dominance on the track, but the latter’s loss left him questioning the very purpose of racing.
However, why didn’t Schumacher, who admired Senna both as a rival and a driver, attend his funeral? The answer is more complicated than one might think!

Quick Links Joel Schumaker Had a Hard Time Moving Past Batman & Robin What is the Story of Tigerland? Tigerland Was One Of Joel Schumacher's Most Acclaimed Films
The late Joel Schumacher directed many iconic films throughout his career, from The Lost Boys to A Time to Kill. It's almost impossible, however, to hear the director's name and talk about him without making his involvement with DC part of the conversation. Despite the acclaim he received for his direction in thrillers and dramas, his brief time in the comic book/superhero genre wasn't quite met the same way. Batman Forever opened to mixed reviews in 1995, but it was 1997's Batman & Robin that received the biggest amount of backlash. Although his two Batman movies have come to be seen in a better light than how they were initially upon their release, the negative impact that they had on his career is undeniable.

Batman & Robin director Joel Schumacher's conception of the fourth entry in the Batman franchise looked very different, and it would have reshaped the DC Universe. Instead of Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy and Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze, the filmmaker sought Nicolas Cage to play Dr. Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow. The sequel would have been called Batman Unchained, and its script was penned by Mark Protosevich, who wrote I Am Legend and Thor. In addition to Scarecrow, Batman Unchained would have adapted Harley Quinn for the big screen, this time reimagined as the Joker's daughter who wanted revenge for his death.
Previous antagonists Joker, Catwoman, the Riddler, Two-Face, and the Penguin were going to appear in an effort to tie the Tim Burton and Schumacher films together more cohesively. Unfortunately, Schumacher and Protosevich's original vision wouldn't see the light of day. The director hoped to take the franchise in...

This post contains mild spoilers for "Blood Creek."
Vampire horror movies are a dime-a-dozen, often falling into the same genre trappings or retreading familiar storylines. This is not always a bad thing, though, as long as there's fun to be had: films like "Blade" or "Van Helsing" entertain us by expertly balancing thrilling action with dramatic tension while knowing it is best not to indulge in self-seriousness. Well, what about an odd little vampire tale that is both campy and self-serious, as well as equal parts ridiculous and entertaining? Welcome to Joel Schumacher's unforgettable "Blood Creek," where a Nazi vampire scholar named Richard Wirth (a young Michael Fassbender) wreaks havoc after being freed from captivity by two brothers who really should have known better. Henry Cavill and Dominic Purcell play Evan and Victor Marshall, respectively, and it is up to this duo to try and stop this near-immortal Nazi...

The latest sequel to 1989s Batman John Jackson Millers Batman: Resurrection has a number of connections to Tim Burtons Batman series and its comic continuation. The two Burton Batman films are part of several branching timelines, with the first being the Joel Schumacher Batman films Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. Sam Hamm and Joe Quinoness Batman 89 and Batman 89: Echoes comics also continue the story of Michael Keatons Batman, aligning far more with 1989s Batman and Batman Returns.
Millers Resurrection is set between the events of 1989s Batman and Returns, providing some much-needed connective tissue between the two movies. What timeline Resurrection takes place in was initially unclear, as a story set between the two Burton movies could potentially reference lore from the Schumacher films, the Batman 89 comics, or even the DC Extended Universes Flashpoint universe from The Flash. However, Resurrection is not only set in the same timeline as the Batman 89 comics,...

Julia Roberts is one of the biggest actresses of the ’90s, a true icon in Hollywood. It’s hard to imagine anyone who hasn’t heard of her. But with so many rom-coms and dramas on her resume, would casting her in a superhero movie even make sense? For a lot of people, it could be a bit of a stretch.

35 years after the release of 1989s Batman, a published sequel makes more sense of three potentially confusing scenes. Tim Burtons Batman was an overwhelming success, instantly becoming one of the most iconic and influential superhero movies in the genre. Not only did the live-action Batman movie contribute to the superhero movie becoming a pop culture sensation, but it also forever changed the way that major Hollywood blockbusters are marketed. On its own, 1989s Batman, surprisingly, still holds up, even at a time when superhero movies have become far larger in scale and more complex.
With the superhero genre now being defined by comic book style continuity and interconnectivity, the Burton Batman universe has retroactively become a steadily growing multi-media franchise, with the first two films Batman and Batman Returns inhabiting multiple timelines. Your honor, I must confess — I have a mighty big soft spot for "The Devil's Advocate." The 1997 supernatural courtroom thriller stars Keanu Reeves as Kevin Lomax, a hotshot Florida lawyer (with the world's sketchiest Southern accent) who is recruited by a fiendish defense attorneys office in New York, run by the charismatic and slightly terrifying John Milton (Al Pacino). As he abandons his morals in order to win cases, Kevin's wife Mary Ann (Charlize Theron) starts having horrific visions with demonic influences. You see, Milton isn't just devilishly handsome and talented, he's also actually the devil himself.
"The Devil's Advocate" completely hinges on Pacino's performance, as he plays Milton with a kind of outlandish delight that only a rare few of our greatest actors could ever attempt. It's a little bit Tony Montana from "Scarface" when he's on copious amounts of coke and a little bit Lieutenant Hanna from "Heat,...

Uma Thurman is clearing up who the intended audience for 1997’s Batman & Robin was for.

The planned sequel to 1985’s St Elmo’s Fire still lacks a director and doesn’t even have a writer yet, but the original cast have all agreed to return.
Back in August we learned that there was a plan in place to bring back the core cast of St Elmo’s Fire for a belated sequel. When Rob Lowe, one of the stars of St Elmo’s Fire, broke news of the sequel, he stated that negotiations were happening but that none of the cast were yet confirmed. A few months on, Lowe (who seems to be the film’s unofficial spokesperson) has popped up again to confirm that every member of the original film’s core cast will be returning. That means Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Andie MacDowell and Mare Winningham are all set to reprise their roles in the film.

Batman & Robin has arguably been one of the most polarizing movies to feature The Dark Knight. Uma Thurman, who played Poison Ivy in the film, recently offered an explanation for the movie's campy tone.
The movie came up during Thurman's recent appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show. When the titular host mentioned that her kids love Batman & Robin, the actor said, "It's the one that was actually made for children." Since the Joel Schumacher-directed movie received a PG-13 rating before its release in 1997, it was likely not intended for young kids, despite what Poison Ivy actor says.

The 2002 thriller Phone Booth is one of Colin Farrell's most underrated movies. Farrell plays New York publicist Stu Shepard, who finds himself trapped in a phone booth, on the phone with a stranger who forces him to disclose his secrets while watching with a gun from a nearby building. Farrell's portrayal of the desperate Stu is central to the success of Phone Booth, which received a 72% positive Rotten Tomatoes rating and critical praise for its unusual filming style: taking place in one location, Phone Booth was filmed in real-time.
Filming in real-time means that the movie's events take place over the time that it takes to watch it. As it is not a commonly used format, movies that take place in real-time must be both creative and effective. And, when 1980's Coal Miner's Daughter was released, it became clear that the gruff southerner had what it took to be a leading man. Yet, most of his movies throughout the '80s failed to truly take off, whether he was playing someone kindhearted or nefarious, as seen in the underrated Stormy Monday (1988).
Equally adept at playing heroes and villains, Jones started to really see his profile expand throughout the '90s. Colin Farrell has proven that he is a true man of culture, as The Penguin star revealed that he loves Joel Schumacher's maligned Batman movies, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. Farrell is currently dominating our screens as Oz Cobb in The Penguin, portraying a grittier, more realistic version of the one found in Tim Burton's Batman Returns. While Farrell's co-star, Cristin Milioti (who plays Sofia Falcone in the series) has gone on record saying she loves Batman Returns, Farrell says his Batman tastes lean into the more eccentric.

In July of 1994, the Los Angeles Times claimed that it was "still a riddle why Keaton didn't stay" as the star of the Batman movies. 30 years later, however, that riddle has been well and truly solved. Along with director Tim Burton, Keaton revolutionized the comic book film with 1989's "Batman," which was not only a box office smash, but alongside Richard Donner's celebrated "Superman" from 1978, wrote the blueprint for how to adapt superhero stories for the big screen. Keaton himself had overcome considerable backlash following his casting as the Dark Knight, proving wrong legions of fans who claimed the five-foot nine-inch actor, then known for his comedic work, was too diminutive a choice for the lead role.
Then came 1992's "Batman Returns," which saw Burton craft an expressionist nightmare fairytale unimpeded by studio interference. Unfortunately, not everyone was a fan. Not only were parents and kids put off by...

What isn't to love about The Lost Boys? Between the smooth SoCal setting, the stylish, leather-clad vampires, and the absolute killer '80s soundtrack, this Joel Schumacher flick is easily one of the best movies about supernatural bloodsuckers to ever hit theaters. With a stellar cast that included Jason Patric, Kiefer Sutherland, Dianne Wiest, Jami Gertz, Corey Feldman, Corey Haim, Lost Boys was a box-office success though reviews were mixed. Nevertheless, it's not surprising that this picture landed cult classic status, though what is surprising (given the substantial return on investment) is that the movie never got a traditional sequel. Of course, that wasn't for Schumacher's lack of trying...

"Batman & Robin" was so panned for its campiness that Warner Bros. had no choice but to pivot to a dark and gritty reboot, resulting in Christopher Nolan's acclaimed "Dark Knight" trilogy. This is filmmaking mythology almost as well-known as Batman's own origin of alleyway orphaning. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige even calls "Batman & Robin" one of the most important superhero movies, for it taught studios that fans wouldn't settle for schlock. In hindsight, it's almost unbelievable that "Batman & Robin" and "Batman Begins" premiered only eight years apart; the Dark Knight's fall didn't last long!
There were abandoned plans for director Joel Schumacher to make a third Batman film, though. "Batman Unchained," to be penned by Mark Protosevich (rather than previous screenwriter Akiva Goldsman) was supposedly going to be "darker." Batman & Robin is one of the most infamous superhero movies ever made, and its cast have a lot to answer for, no matter how successful they may have been following the film's release. Easily considered to be the worst live-action Batman film by many, Joel Schumacher's 1997 flop needs little introduction among die-hard DC fans thanks to its reputation for childish one-liners, terrible costumes, and an utterly nonsensical plot. Much of the film's cast has gone on to do better things since, with Batman & Robin being an unfortunate stain on their resumes.
