Netflix produced its first non-documentary feature in 2015. It was called Beasts of No Nation, and it was fine. However, the film did not get nominated for an Academy Award. Lots has changed in the last decade.
Your favorite streamer often gets nominated for major awards each year. 2025 is no different. Emilia Pérez has 13 nominations alone, including one for Best Picture. So far, Netflix has yet to get a win in that category, and Emilia Pérez is not the favorite this year, either.
In fact, Netflix has also almost been entirely shut out of wins in the acting categories. Only Laura Dern won, and that was for Best Supporting Actress in 2020. But the streamer does do well in some other categories. Those might not be part of the Big 6, but when it comes to documentaries, Netflix knows what it is doing. Just see below, and you'll know.

While other shows fight tooth and nail for viewers’ attention, the world always stops when news about the return of HBO‘s Euphoria is at hand. Regarding the Hollywood rumor mill, nothing grinds the gears faster than the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The moment Marvel fans get a whiff of controversy, they throw the switch by posting think pieces, clickbait articles, and, rarely, stories of genuine interest about what’s happening behind closed doors. When Marvel dropped Jonathan Majors as the MCU’s Kang the Conquerer, rumors about him getting replaced spread like wildfire. One actor floated as a possible replacement for Majors was Colman Domingo, who fans believed was secretly preparing to become Marvel’s next Thanos-like villain. Confused by the rumors, Domingo reached out to Marvel to find out what was happening. We now know more about their exchange and where Domingo stands regarding his place within the MCU.
“When it was constantly in the press and on places like Twitter, I was like, ‘Wait a minute. Is this true? Am I being talked about for Kang?...

Back in the 1950s and ’60s, it was common for an actor to be introduced as “star of stage, screen, and television!”, but these days, it can be said only rarely. Certainly, movie actors often alternate between TV and film, but precious few big stars are willing to take that scary leap to the stage. One who has and has been amply awarded in all three media is Colman Domingo, who began his stage career at Joseph Papp‘s New York Shakespeare Festival and moved eventually to Broadway where he has earned two Tony Award nominations, for acting and producing.
Domingo then turned to television, and like any Broadway actor, guest shots on multiple Law and Order episodes followed — a must for any New York actor’s resumé. Luckily, Domingo then landed a successful series gig, with a seven-season stint on Fear the Walking Dead, which then led to HBO’s hit,...

For a race that seemed as unpredictable as any in recent history, the 2025 Oscar nominations came and went without many huge surprises. All the expected acting contenders — including frontrunners like Demi Moore, Adrien Brody, Timothée Chalamet, Zoe Saldaña, and Kieran Culkin — were bestowed with nominations on Thursday, as were several films long predicted to score Best Picture recognition. But while the 97th Oscars were perhaps shorter than usual on snubs and surprises, the list of nominees did clarify which films Academy voters truly loved and what might ultimately win Best Picture in March. Ahead are the key takeaways from the 2025 Oscar nominations.
Emilia Pérez is the front-runner to beat
With 13 Oscar nominations on Thursday, including Best Picture, Best International Feature, Best Director, and acting nominations for Karla Sofia Gascón and Zoe Saldaña, Emilia Pérez is not just the year’s top Oscar contender but one of the most decorated nominees in history.

Colman Domingo entered exclusive territory with his Best Actor nomination for Sing Sing on Thursday. He is the first man since Denzel Washington to achieve back-to-back nominations, with Domingo’s previous bid coming last year for Rustin. Washington achieved the same feat in 2017-18 for Fences and Roman J. Israel, Esq., respectively.
“What the f–k? I’m in some beautiful, rare company, and I feel very appreciative,” Domingo tells Gold Derby. “For me it’s about being connected to a film that I care about so deeply. I’m glad Sing Sing is back out in theaters for everyone to view. But Rustin and Sing Sing, two films that I truly care so deeply about — their messages — especially today when we need these stories of inspiration and hope and triumph against adversity. We look to films to show us how to be in the world, to show us how to overcome something.

Colman Domingo has been part of the 2025 Oscars race for Best Actor for some time thanks to Sing Sing, and his first major win with the Gotham Awards is a telling sign of what is to come. Rotten Tomatoes has had a lukewarm response to a new show featuring one of the stars of Euphoria. The popular HBO teen drama, which was created by Sam Levinson and is based on the 2012 Israeli miniseries of the same name, is set in the fictional East Highland, California and follows the trials and tribulation of teenage addict Rue (Zendaya) as well as the classmates and adults in her orbit. The show debuted with season 1 in 2019, followed by season 2 in 2022. The upcoming season 3 was officially renewed in February 2022.

A new Netflix movie that's based on a true story has just debuted on Rotten Tomatoes, and critics are being very positive. Though Netflix offers plenty of originals in the sci-fi and fantasy genres, more grounded shows and movies based on true stories have also historically been popular at the streamer. These sometimes take the form of true-crime shows, such as the popular Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, but they have also been more straightforward dramas.
The Founder, for example, starring Michael Keaton, was well-received in 2017, with its story of how McDonald's became one of the biggest restaurant chains in the world. 2023 was a particularly strong year for the based-on-a-true-story movie at Netflix, with Nyad, Bradley Cooper's Maestro, and Rustin all earning positive reviews and awards recognition. Another 2024 Netflix movie based on true events now seems poised to join this respectable club.

Colman Domingo is in the Oscars 2025 Best Actor race, and he could accomplish something that hasn't been done since Denzel Washington did it seven years ago. While Denzel is firmly entrenched as a contender for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 2025 thanks to his Gladiator II performance, his absence from the lead category leaves room for other actors to shine. The predicted 2025 Oscars Best Actor nominations include past winners and nominees, and Colman Domingo counts among the latter group.
Domingo finds himself in the middle of awards season conversations thanks to his performance in Sing Sing. The prison drama from A24 and director Greg Kwedar is based on a true story, and sees the actor play John "Divine G" Whitfield. Critics have raved about Domingo's performance in Sing Sing, so much so that he is expected to be in the mix for a Best Actor Oscar nomination. It won't be...

We just learned some web-tastic news at D23, when Marvel announced their upcoming animated series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Initially thought to be taking place in the MCU, the show was later announced to be a sort of multiverse show, like What If… ? But hold on! That’s not the most interesting thing about it. The real surprise came when they announced Colman Domingo would voice Norman Osborn.
Colman Domingo as Bayard Rustin in Rustin | Higher Ground Production
Created by Jeff Trammell, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will take the web-slinger back to high school and put a twist to the storyline. Exploring what it would be like if Norman Osborn was Peter Parker’s mentor, instead of Iron Man, the upcoming show is set to deliver some epic stuff. More than anything, with Colman Domingo playing Osborn aka Green Goblin, the show is set to have more eyes on it.

Editor’s note: this list was originally published in January 2024. It has since been updated to coincide with the release of “Sing Sing.”
Last Oscar season, Colman Domingo became the first Afro Latino to receive a Best Actor nomination from the Academy, for his powerhouse performance in “Rustin.” It’s a deserving nod for a performer who has only recently broken through, but already has an incredible resume of performances to his name.

In an interview with the New York Times, he spoke about considering quitting acting entirely after facing numerous rejections for bit parts in prestige dramas. But...

You do not meet John Whitfield, known to friends and enemies alike by his nickname Divine G, as a person convicted of a crime. You are introduced to him onstage as a performer, bringing a production of A Midsummer’s Night Dream to a close as an audience of fellow incarcerated men applaud. It’s a small but crucial detail, and helps set the stage, literally and otherwise, for what Sing Sing is aiming to do. A prison drama less interested in crime and punishment than in catharsis and the creative power of theater,...

The Prime Video series adaptation of Criminal, the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Sean Phillips, has been steadily building up its cast in recent weeks, and now Variety reports that the latest actor to join the ensemble is Luke Evans, whose credits include Fast & Furious 6, Beauty and the Beast, Dracula Untold, and the Hobbit films. CBS Studios President David Stapf was asked if Your Honor season 3 was a possibility after the show's 2024 streaming success. Stapf said they want the show to continue, but it's too soon to tell. The continuation of the show would depend on the availability of the cast, which could prevent it from happening.
Your Honor season 3 has gotten a positive update. The show, which premiered on Showtime in 2020, starred Bryan Cranston as Michael Desiato, a New Orleans judge who takes a huge career risk in an attempt to save his son after learning that his hit-and-run victim was connected to a major crime family. Your Honor season 3 never came to fruition as the show was cancelled in 2022, several months prior to the season 2 premiere. However, between Paramount+ and Netflix, it became a major streaming hit in June 2024, with billions of minutes streamed between both seasons.
