If you've been keeping up with the recent coverage, you'll know that Disney's film studios have been struggling with some major identity issues. As the company grapples with a third consecutive Oscar loss, Disney is pulling some major restructuring. However, the parks tell a different story.
When most people think of Disney's peak era, visions of the '90s films and parks immediately flood the senses. Classics like Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and even A Goofy Movie still serve as the cornerstone on which an entire fandom is built... And Disney is more than aware.
Magic or manipulation?
Anyone who's ever been to any Disney Park knows that the mouse knows how to bewitch our minds and ensnare our senses better than any sorcerous spell, and Disneyland's new after-hours event is a prime example of why it will always have a healthy supply of fans.

In 1994, Disney's animated film The Lion King launched a huge franchise that audiences still can't get enough of, even today. After three decades of sequels, spin-offs, and remakes, fans young and old continue gravitating toward the original, compelling narrative about family, sacrifice, individual responsibility, and finding one's purpose through redemption. With the recent theatrical release of the live-action prequel, Mufasa: The Lion King, Disney's well-loved story expands — giving us a fresh look at familiar characters.
The film follows Mufasa and Scar's early life, providing fans with context regarding their eventual rivalry. This epic addition has also brought some viewers back through the franchise's catalog, revisiting past favorites and discovering new content (there's plenty to choose from). With several direct sequels to the classic that started it all, television specials, and the latest live-action movies, it's hard to know where to start. Here's a breakdown of each title in The Lion King franchise since its inception,...

Mufasa: The Lion King is continuing to roar its way to success. The latest Lion King movie has thrived in a slow January, competing against a small field consisting of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Nosferatu, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, and several other new releases. Wolf Man and One of Them Days were poised to top the box office over the holiday weekend. Even with Martin Luther King Day offering a chance for a booming box office, it has been a slow week. Still, despite only a trickle at the box office, Disney's lions are thriving.
According to a report by Variety, the Lion King prequel is expected to end the weekend with $209.8 million domestically and $588.4 million worldwide. With that total, it has officially become the 10th 2024 movie to reach the $200 million milestone domestically. It sits ahead of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which earned $196 million, and just behind Sonic 3's $218 million total.

After Mufasa: The Lion King, Disney should bring The Lion King franchise back to its roots. The franchise began with the release of The Lion King in 1994, which proved to be an immense critical and commercial success that has stood the test of time. The franchise released two more animated movies, with The Lion King II: Simba's Pride in 1998 and The Lion King 1½ in 2004, both of which were direct-to-video. In 2019, the franchise returned to theaters with the "live-action" Lion King remake, followed by the story of Mufasa: The Lion King in 2024.
Mufasa acts as both a sequel and prequel to the 2019 Lion King, as Rafiki tells Simba and Nala's daughter, Kiara, about the origins of her grandfather and uncle, Scar. Mufasa: The Lion King tells an original story set in The Lion King universe, with the prequel confirming one potential issue that a live-action remake of The Lion King 1 1/2 would have to face. Despite there being outcry for a remake of The Lion King II: Simba's Pride after the success of the 2019 remake of The Lion King, Disney decided to go in a different direction, instead telling a different story about the origin of Mufasa. However, Mufasa: The Lion King highlighted how a remake of The Lion King 1 1/2 could work, although not perfectly.
The Lion King 1 1/2 is a 2004 direct-to-video midquel set during the events of 1994's The Lion King. The film explores what Timon and Pumbaa got up to before the events of the original animated movie, with the film highlighting the duo's history and fleshing out their storylines. Mufasa: The Lion King's live-action poster has been reimagined in the classic style of the original Lion King's 2D art in a stunning recreation. The upcoming Mufasa movie will serve as both a prequel and a sequel to Disney's live-action remake of The Lion King, with Rafiki (John Kani) telling Simba's (Donald Glover) daughter, Kiara (Blue Ivy Carter) about the origin story of the titular lion (Aaron Pierre). While the film will pull elements of the animated franchise into its story, the adventure on display will be entirely original to the live-action universe.

Box office estimations have come in for Mufasa: The Lion King, and while it might be a hit over the holiday season, it will be a significant step-down from its 2019 predecessor. Directed by Barry Jenkins, Mufasa: The Lion King is both a prequel and sequel to 2019's The Lion King, as Rafiki tells how Mufasa and Scar went from best friends to bitter rivals to Simba's daughter, Kiara. Today, Disney released the final trailer for the upcoming “Mufasa: The Lion King” film. This live-action film is set to be a prequel to “The Lion King.”
This new story tells how Mufasa became the Lion King. Many have had some issues with the trailers indicating that Mufasa was an orphan, when in “The Lion King,” that did not seem to be the case. However, they might explain it in the movie.

The film synopsis reads,

Disney has unveiled the newest trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King, which tries to justify its existence by being filled with lore from other Lion King movies while also addressing previous criticisms of the franchise. 2019's The Lion King was one of the biggest films of all time, not adjusted for inflation, as it is the tenth highest-grossing movie ever with $1.6 billion. It certainly wasn't shocking that Disney decided to greenlight a sequel, despite the 2019 remake facing heavy criticism at its release. It has only grown as more audience members seemingly get tired of Disney's attempts to remake their animated classics.

Disney has just dropped the final trailer for Barry Jenkins' Mufasa: The Lion King (via Toonado.com) featuring younger versions of characters like Mufasa, Scar, Sarabi, Rafiki and Zazu before they called Pride Rock home.
Just like 2019's The Lion King, this movie looks visually stunning; the main difference here is that we're getting an original story rather than what many felt was little more than a shot-for-shot remake of the 1994 cartoon from filmmaker Jon Favreau.
Similar to this summer's awesome Transformers One, it looks like we'll meet many familiar characters in their early years and watch as the friendship between Mufasa and Taka (a.k.a. Scar) crumbles and ends with them becoming bitter enemies.

"You expect us to follow this hallucinating baboon?!" Nah she's right. At D23 Brazil, Disney unveiled their third & final trailer for the Mufasa: The Lion King movie, from director Barry Jenkins (of Moonlight & If Beale Street Could Talk). The story about the rise of one of the greatest kings of the Pride Lands, returns to the African savanna where Rafiki tells Kiara about her grandfather. Told in flashbacks, we're introduced to Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost & alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka—the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion a lively journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny. This isn't so much The Lion King 2, more of a prequel + sequel combined. One of the most beloved characters from The Lion King will be seen once again in the new movie. A new image released by Fandango shows Rafiki (John Kani) coming back to deliver more wisdom in Mufasa: The Lion King. The upcoming prequel will tell the story of how the titular character came to be the respected monarch seen in the previous movie. This particular chapter of Mufasa's (Aaron Pierre) life has never been explored on the big screen before as Mufasa: The Lion King will show audiences a side of the Pride Lands that they have never seen.

Was the Character of Scar in The Lion King More Complex Than We Initially Thought? Unpacking His Depth & Motivations! (Photo Credit – Facebook)
When you think of The Lion King, Scar usually gets painted as the villain. But if you peek behind the royal curtain, you’ll find a tangled web of politics. The Pride Lands under Mufasa’s reign? Think of it as a lion-centric oligarchy, where the rest of the animal kingdom had little say. Sure, it was a hereditary monarchy, but with Rafiki throwing in his mystical “Circle of Life” rhetoric, the whole setup felt like a theocratic power play. The lions were practically sitting on top of the food chain, happily basking in their religious dogma while oppressing the other species.
Enter Scar. Naturally, he wasn’t thrilled about being stuck in the shadow of his kingly brother. While everyone else celebrated the arrival of their new ruler,...

I've lived my life with one all-encompassing mantra: Everything important you need to know in life can be found in The Lion King, Star Wars, or The Simpsons. If you think about it, it's bloody brilliant, if I may so humbly say myself. Beating yourself up about a bad decision you made years ago? "It doesn't matter. It's in the past," as Rafiki (Robert Guillaume) tells Simba (Matthew Broderick), motivating him to stop running and return home. Trying to get something done? To hell with that. As Yoda (Frank Oz) says in his iconic The Empire Strikes Back quote, "Do... or do not. There is no try." Wanting to know how to win friends and influence people? You could spend up to $63.98 on the Dale Carnegie book, or remember this one simple (and free) truth from The Simpsons: "You don't make friends with salad." In fact, the greatest lesson...

There is no shortage of fan theories surrounding classic Disney movies, and one of the more bizarre is that The Lion Kings Mufasa secretly knew magic. However, after the story of The Lion King was expanded upon in a canon comic book miniseries, it seems this bizarre fan theory isnt as far-fetched as one might have thought. In fact, Disney all but confirms that its 100% true.
In Disney Villains: Scar #4 by Chuck Brown and Trevor Fraley, Scar is dreaming of his future as king of the Pride Lands, and its just as bleak and desolate as fans remember it being from the 1994 animated film. Scar is then approached by Rafiki, who informs Scar that he is in a dream, and that this is only a vision of a potential future that he could very well avoid. Though, of course, Scar ignores his advice, as fans know that this is how...

Shah Rukh Khan will voice Mufasa in the Hindi version of Barry Jenkins’ Mufasa: The Lion King, which releases in India on December 20.
His sons Aryan and AbRam will voice Simba and young Mufasa respectively. In the 2019 live-action The Lion King, Khan also voiced Mufasa.
“Mufasa has an incredible legacy and stands as the ultimate king of the jungle, imparting his wisdom to his son, Simba,” Khan said. “I deeply relate to him as a father and also resonate with Mufasa’s journey in the film. When Mufasa: The Lion King dropped its first trailer in April, Scar’s storyline was notably absent in the prequel. However, Taka aka Scar appears in the new trailer released at D23’s Friday night presentation and a young Scar has a major role in the film. While fans expected to see a brother growing jealous of Mufasa’s ascend to power, the trailer completely threw us off with the good guy Taka.

With one trailer already out there in the cinematic Pride Lands, Mufasa: The Lion King continues in its quest to justify a prequel movie to both Jon Favreau's 2019 CG effort and the 1994 animated epic original. Having Barry Jenkins as the filmmaker guiding the new film is certainly a solid start, leading to some beautiful new imagery utilizing the impressive, photo-real technology that Favs and his team developed. For Mufasa, the narrative spins back the clock to find the future king in his cub days, and how he came to meet the lion brother to be known as Scar, in the years before they were enemies. Check out the new trailer that dropped at Disney's giant D23 event:
Mufasa tells its story through two branches: one features Rafiki (John Kani) explaining to Kiara (Blue Ivy Carter), the daughter of Simba (Donald Glover) and Nala (Beyoncé) how her grandfather survived his tough childhood.

It may have taken three months, but a new trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King is finally here! Believe it or not, Disney may have learned some lessons from the first film!
Is this trailer an improvement over the previous one released in April? That depends on how much you loved the emotionless CGI remake from 2019.
In short, it’s more of the same in terms of realistic computer-generated critters with human voices. This time around, we get more details on the origins of Mufasa and Scar’s relationship as brothers.
