Liam Hemsworth's $390 Million Sci-Fi Sequel That Ruined Its Franchise Is a Stealth Streaming Hit 9 Years Later
Image
The last few decades have been filled with a lot of original content that became extremely profitable, so studios decided to bank on that success with unwarranted sequels or reboots. One of those franchises includes Independence Day.

The 1996 sci-fi film marked one of Will Smith's breakout roles and won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. The movie was extremely successful at the box office, becoming the highest-earning film that year, so two decades later, Independence Day: Resurgence followed, starring The Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth in the leading role.Independence Day: Resurgence wasn't the same hit as the original was, but it's now becoming a success on streaming, FlixPatrol reports.

Independence Day: Resurgence has just debuted in the Top 10 overall charts on HBO Max in the United States. At the top of the charts, Sinners continues its dominance, followed by And Just Like That..., Matt Damon and Pedro Pascal's creature featureThe Great Wall,...

The Vanessa Hudgens of 'French Girl' Isn't The Vanessa Hudgens You Know
Image
For fans of rom-coms, it can be a struggle to find a new one that puts a fun, unique spin on all the tropes and twists that go hand-in-hand with the genre, while also respecting that said twists should not come at the expense of what makes the genre so beloved. In the case of French Girl, in theaters now, writer-directors James A. Woods and Nicolas Wright take the story to Quebec City, Canada, and follow Sophie (Évelyne Brochu), a French-Canadian chef living in the States, who travels home with her American boyfriend Gordon (Zach Braff) when she gets an opportunity to interview for a prestigious restaurant at the Château Frontenac. Only problem? Head chef and restaurant owner Ruby (Vanessa Hudgens) is also Sophie's ex-girlfriend. And she wants her back.

Zach Braff, Vanessa Hudgens & Evelyne Brochu Talk French Girl, Bad Boys 4, And Orphan Black
Image
The love triangle in French Girl is unique and set in a beautiful, unique setting of French Canada. The comedic aspect of Ruby's character brought a fun dynamic to the movie, especially in scenes with Gordon. Evelyne Brochu felt connected to her role as a French girl and expressed a desire to be part of the Orphan Black world forever.

French Girl follows Gordon, whose life seems nearly perfect working as an English teacher in Brooklyn with a beloved girlfriend, Sophie. However, things get flipped on their heads when Sophie is offered the opportunity to land her dream job as an executive chef at a new restaurant in her hometown, Quebec City. When they visit her home, Gordon makes a startling discovery about Sophie's friend Ruby, who set up the job opportunity, and their history as more than just friends.

French Girl Review: Zach Braff Tries to Reignite the Rom-Com
Image
Who said romantic comedies are dead? Dating back to the 1990s and beyond, of course, the crowd-pleasing genre remains a perfect date-night excuse to remain couchbound and watch lovers quarrel, reunite, kiss, make up, and more. French Girl, a new small-budget feature from co-writer-directors James A. Woods and Nicolas Wright, isn't exactly the most groundbreaking content out there, but it successfully puts a unique little spin on the common love-triangle tropes often seen in modern-day romantic comedies. Zach Braff's age certainly shows here, but his reliably humorous physical comedy might just bring you back to the glory days of Scrubs.

Zach Braff Returns to Rom-Coms in French Girl Trailer
Image
Zach Braff returns to rom-coms in French Girl, playing a romantic trying to keep his love alive despite a job offer that separates him from his girlfriend. French Girl is a heartwarming romantic comedy that explores the cultural clash between the U.S. and Canada. While there is currently no Scrubs reunion or movie in development, both creator Bill Lawrence and Zach Braff believe it is inevitable and that fans want to see it happen.

Scrubs star Zach Braff makes a return to rom-coms in French Girl, for which we’ve gotten our hands on the first trailer, poster, and a new batch of images. French Girl finds Braff in charmingly familiar territory as a hopeless romantic whose proposal plans are put in jeopardy when his girlfriend gets swept away to Canada by a job offer from her ex. Stargate Sequels Would've Brought Yetis, Loch Ness Monster Into the Franchise
Image
Had there been a sequel to 1994's Stargate, the franchise would have moved beyond Egyptian extra-terrestrials.

During an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, franchise producer and co-creator Dean Devlin discussed his and film collaborator Roland Emmerich's abandoned sequel plans for Stargate, as well as for 1996's Independence Day and 1998's Godzilla. The duo found so much mainstream success starting with Stargate that they planned to make a trilogy, with the second installment asking, "[W]hy are there pyramids in Mayan culture" and the third installment bringing the entire mythology together. "The third one was going to tie everything together," Devlin said. "We were gonna have the Yeti, we were gonna have the Loch Ness Monster. It was all going to make sense how these things are tied together."

Independence Day Director Wants to Make Another Sequel or TV Show for Disney+
Image
Independence Day 3 is still possible as Roland Emmerich is hoping to make a third installment of the sci-fi franchise. After helming the original Independence Day in 1996, Emmerich returned to direct the sequel Independence Day: Resurgence in 2016. There's been no indication of another sequel happening anytime soon following Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox, perhaps due to the negative reception to Resurgence.

Five years after the release of the second movie, Emmerich says it's the perfect time to continue the story. He notes how Disney has a streaming service these days, teasing that it could be a great place to release the movie if the studio is hesitant of a theatrical release. Emmerich adds that it wouldn't even need to be a movie, as an Independence Day TV series could also work. Either way, he wants to see the story continue, as recently explained to ComicBook.com.

"They have now a streaming service and they need product.

The Stargate Movie Reboot Is Dead Because Producer Dean Devlin Thinks They'll "Screw It Up"
Director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin have been planning a new Stargate reboot for years. The project was said to be a trilogy that allowed them to finish the story that they started with the original film. I was actually kind of interested to see what they would do with it, but the project is no longer happening.

During an interview with Empire, Devlin explained that the reason why they aren't doing it anymore is because he's scared they are going to screw it up. He said:

“It looked good for a couple of months, but now it’s not looking so good. There are just a lot of things that have to fire at the same time, and there was a moment where I thought it was all firing at the same time, and then it all kind of fell apart.“It’s one of the reasons I prefer to work independently.

Stargate : La Porte des étoiles (1994)
Stargate Reboot Delayed Following Independence Day 2
Stargate : La Porte des étoiles (1994)
Before filmmakers Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin joined forces on the 1996 blockbuster Independence Day, they also wrote the 1994 sci-fi film Stargate, which Roland Emmerich directed. The film was a modest success, earning $71.5 million at the domestic box office and $196.5 million worldwide. The movie would spawn a big franchise on the small screen with the launch of Stargate Sg-1 in 1997, but it never got a big screen sequel. A few years ago, it was reported that the filmmakers were returning to work on a reboot trilogy. Now it seems that may not happen anymore.

Empire recently spoke with Dean Devlin, who was promoting the third season of his TNT TV series The Librarians, where he offered an update on the Stargate reboot. While the project was looking promising for quite some time, Dean Devlin says it is no longer happening. Here's what he had to say below.

"It looked good for a couple of months,...

Review: Independence Day: Resurgence
It’s fairly amazing that it took five men — Nicolas Wright, James A. Woods, Dean Devlin, Roland Emmerich, James Vanderbilt – to conceive the story and pen the script to Independence Day: Resurgence when it trod no new ground and felt like the worst rehash of the original film and many other Sf flicks from the preceding twenty years.

The original ID4 was an unassuming popcorn thriller with implausible science and predictable actions but leavened with strong performances and quirky, fun characters. They were having fun fighting the alien invaders and we had memorable lines and Will Smith punching out an alien with “Welcome to Earth”.

Somehow, these five, including Devlin and Emmerich who gave us the first, left out the fun. Instead, for two hours we see a mix of familiar and unfamiliar figures watch an even larger alien ship arrive, intent on destroying Earth either as an act of...

Halfway through both the summer movie season and the year of 2016 as a whole, sequels have been hit or miss. Follow-ups such as Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, X-Men: Apocalypse, Alice Through the Looking Glass, Now You See Me 2 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows couldn't capture the box office magic of its predecessors. Of course, the biggest movie of the year right now is a sequel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but last week, a follow-up 13 years in the making, Finding Dory, opened huge with $135 million, breaking Shrek the Third's record for biggest animated opening weekend ($121.6 million). As expected, this forgetful fish staved off three newcomers this weekend, 20th Century Fox's Independence Day: Resurgence, Sony's The Shallows and Stx Entertainment's Free State of Jones, repeating atop the box office with $73.2 million.

Independence Day: Resurgence Review
Somehow – despite Roland Emmerich’s obsessive focus on Earth’s destruction – Independence Day found a way to bottle raw human fortitude in a way that its sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence, clumsily fumbles. In the most generic, fan-servicing, sequelitis-stricken way, this sci-fi doomsday franchise charges back into theaters like a bull in an intergalactic China shop. The entire films is basically one big “Here we go again!” moment on repeat, as Emmerich prays that nostalgia is enough to distract from the nothingness that’s occurring on screen. Look! There’s a heroic poster of Will Smith! Or over there! It’s that crazy doctor who totally should be dead! And Jeff Goldblum! You guys still love him, right?!

Yes, Mr. Emmerich, we do still love Jeff Goldblum – but not when he’s reduced to making silly faces like a rejected Tim & Eric sketch. Granted, I’d pay good money for a...

After several weeks of underperforming sequels, including Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, Pixar's Finding Dory helped breathe new life into the summer box office with a whopping $135 million opening weekend. Stargate: new details on movie reboot

Dean Devlin reveals the new Stargate trilogy will go back to square one, and tell the story he and Roland Emmerich originally wanted.

Later this week, director Roland Emmerich's long-mooted sequel to Independence Day finally lands in UK cinemas. Independence Day: Resurgence follows the original by 20 years, and it's not going to be the last of Emmerich's earlier films that he's revisiting.

Plans remain afoot, after all, for a new movie take on Stargate. Emmerich directed the original film, that Dean Devlin wrote and produced. And Devlin has been chatting to Variety about the plans to bring Stargate back to the big screen.

"At the time that we made it, every single studio in Hollywood had told me that science fiction was dead", Devlin remembered, "and Roland and I really love science fiction, so I think that’s partly why it worked and resonated. It wasn...

Devlin Talks Rebooting "Stargate"
Back in the mid-1990s, the team of director Roland Emmerich and writer/producer Dean Devlin were responsible for two of the biggest sci-fi films of the period - "Stargate" and "Independence Day".

Twenty years on, Emmerich delivers a sequel to the latter with "Independence Day: Resurgence" opening next week. Out doing promotional rounds for it, Devlin confirmed to Variety that the pair are turning their attention towards a reboot of, rather than a sequel to, the "Stargate" franchise. Speaking about how the idea for the reboot came together, he says:

"At the time that we made it, every single studio in Hollywood had told me that science fiction was dead... And Roland and I really love science fiction, so I think that's partly why it worked and resonated. It wasn't a cynical attempt to try and make something that was crowd-pleasing."

He also confirms that the plan is to...

Why Stargate Needs to Be a Reboot According to Creator Dean Devlin
Dean Devlin
Two years before their epic blockbuster Independence Day shattered box office records in the summer of 1996, Dean Devlin co-wrote the sci-fi cult classic Stargate with director Roland Emmerich. While the film put up decent numbers at the box office, taking in $71.5 million domestically and $196.5 million worldwide, it became an even bigger hit on the small screen with the launch of Stargate Sg-1, which ran for 10 seasons and spawned numerous spinoffs. Now that their sequel Independence Day: Resurgence is set to hit theaters next weekend, both Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich are eyeing a reboot trilogy of their original movie.

We first reported on this Stargate reboot in 2014, with a report surfacing the following year that Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich's Independence Day sequel was put on hold so they could make Stargate. That obviously never happened, with Independence Day: Resurgence moving ahead instead, but in an interview with Variety,...

Stargate Producer Gives Update on The Reboot: "It's To Let Us Finish Telling Our Story"
The idea of filmmakers rebooting a franchise in order to finish telling their original story may seem antithetical, but it's exactly what producer Dean Devlin and director Roland Emmerich are planning for Stargate. The duo originally planned for their 1994 movie to be the first part in a trilogy, but, as Devlin says, "because of what happened with the rights and changes at the studio and all kinds of strange things, we never got to do parts two and three.”

Variety sat down with him and asked about his plans for the reboot and why they didn't just take the same approach they did with Independence Day: Resurgence and pick up where they left off:

“It’s not a story that can take place 20 years later. So the only way to really tell that trilogy is to go back from the beginning and start the story all over again. It was taken away from us,...

Dean Devlin Says Stargate Reboot Trilogy Will Wrap Up Original Storyline
Not long before Independence Day made Roland Emmerich into a blockbuster king, he channelled his sci-fi interests into a little movie called Stargate. The 1994 sci-fi underdog made a decent profit at the box office, raking in around $200 million, which led to a number of TV spinoffs and straight-to-video sequels.

With plans for a rebooted Stargate universe on the horizon, producer Dean Devlin talked to Variety about what purpose they serve. It’s all about wrapping up their initial franchise plans, because even though the original film’s success spawned more titles, none were based on Emmerich and Devlin’s designs.

“At the time that we made it, every single studio in Hollywood had told me that science fiction was dead. And Roland and I really love science fiction, so I think that’s partly why it worked and resonated. It wasn’t a cynical attempt to try and make something that was crowd-pleasing…...

Aliens invade once again in Independence Day: Resurgence. Ryan reviews another explosive close encounter...

When eager movie-goers queued up around the block for Independence Day in 1996, quite a number of critics were baffled. Here was a film widely criticised for its hackneyed plot and wooden dialogue, which didn’t even pretend to take itself seriously, and yet still the alien invasion-disaster hybrid was breaking attendance records.

"Judging from the summer's record-breaking box-office grosses," one writer moaned, "audiences no longer care - or, more depressing, are incapable of detecting - that the plots of movies don't track."

In many ways, Independence Day set the template for 21st century summer movies. Its event status was trumpeted by a marketing campaign almost as huge as the megalithic alien ships that descended on Earth’s quaking cities. Its multi-strand plot, ensemble cast and panavision destruction made it the unwitting grandfather of such explosive movies as Transformers,...

One of Hollywood's most on and off projects, the current state of the live action Akira remake is that it's back in the works. Marco J Ramirez, the showrunner for season 2 of Netflix's Daredevil show, has been hired to pen a screenplay. Warner Bros is still backing the film,...

Sela Ward To Rule Oval Office In Independence Day 2
We may be buzzing about the possibility of a different woman in the White House by the time Independence Day 2 opens in 2016, but for now, the Roland Emmerich-directed sequel has just added Sela Ward to its cast in the key role of President Lanford.

Ward, known best for her role on CSI: NY, has a history with Emmerich – they last worked together on The Day After Tomorrow, which stands as one of the helmer’s biggest hits. Though Ward has done more work on the small screen since playing Dr. Lucy Hall in that disaster extravaganza, she last appeared as Sharon Schieber in David Fincher’s Gone Girl.

She joins a cast that includes some familiar faces, like Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman and Vivica A. Fox, all of whom starred in Independence Day way back in 1996, as well as newcomers to the franchise like Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games...

Independence Day : Le Jour de la riposte (1996)
'Independence Day 2' Targets 'Boardwalk Empire' Actor
Independence Day : Le Jour de la riposte (1996)
Just one day after we reported that Independence Day star Vivica A. Fox will return for Independence Day 2, Boardwalk Empire actor Travis Tope is in negotiations to join the cast. The actor will play a character named Charlie, although no further details were given. Independence Day star Will Smith is not returning, although Bill Pullman (Thomas Whitmore) and Jeff Goldblum (David Levinson) are reprising their roles from the original, alongside Vivica A. Fox.

The new cast members coming on board for the sequel include Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher and Charlotte Gainsbourg. When Jessie Usher was originally cast, it was revealed that he is playing the son of Will Smith's Stephen Hiller. However, The Wrap reports that he is actually playing Jasmine Dubrow's son Dylan, originally played by Ross Bagley in Independence Day. In the original movie, Hiller was dating Dubrow, but he was not the father of Dylan.

Vivica A. Fox Is Back For Independence Day 2
The latest addition to Roland Emmerich’s long-gestating sequel Independence Day 2 is a little less unexpected than last week’s newbie. Vivica A. Fox, who portrayed Will Smith’s stripper girlfriend Jasmine Dubrow in the 1996 original, has officially signed on to reprise her role.

Emmerich announced the news via Twitter today:

Exciting news… just officially closed @MsVivicaFox for #IndependenceDay! Here’s the pic! pic.twitter.com/hXVjnqOFaD

— Roland Emmerich (@rolandemmerich) March 24, 2015

Fox’s character had a pivotal role in the first outing that involved reuniting the First Lady with the President. Whether or not she will grapple with something a bit meatier – i.e. taking out the aliens – is unknown. One thing is for certain, whatever she does she’ll have family alongside her. No, she didn’t marry Smith’s cocky pilot and he’s definitely not returning. Throughout her story arc in the original she was accompanied by her son,...

Jessie T. Usher
'Independence Day 2' Targets Charlotte Gainsbourg
Jessie T. Usher
Charlotte Gainsbourg, who most recently starred in director Lars von Trier's controversial Nymphomaniac Volume I and Nymphomaniac Volume II, is in negotiations to join the cast of 20th Century Fox's sci-fi action sequel Independence Day 2. No details were given for her character, but if a deal is finalized, she will join Jessie Usher, Liam Hemsworth and Jeff Goldblum, who reprises his David Levinson role from 1996's Independence Day. While Will Smith is not returning as Air Force pilot Stephen Hiller for the follow-up, it is believed that Bill Pullman will be back as Thomas Whitmore.

We reported earlier this month that Jessie Usher is playing the son of Will Smith's Stephen Hiller, but in the original Independence Day, it was never revealed that Hiller had a son. His girlfriend, Jasmine Dubrow (Vivica A. Fox) did have a young son named Dylan (Ross Bagley), but Hiller was not the father.

Charlotte Gainsbourg Joins Independence Day 2
In one of the most interesting pieces of casting news to land this week, THR reports that Charlotte Gainsbourg has entered talks to appear in sci-fi sequel Independence Day 2. The actress is known for her aggressively method performances in Lars Von Trier’s back catalogue of works including Nymphomaniac, Antichrist and Melancholia, so stepping away from character-driven pieces and into the realm of blockbuster fare is certainly an unexpected move for Gainsbourg.

The long-gestating follow-up to Roland Emmerich’s 1996 box office behemoth has hit headlines in recent weeks due to an influx of new cast members. In addition to today’s news, Emmerich – who’s back at the helm – took to Twitter not long ago to announce Jeff Goldblum’s return as scientist David Levinson. Along with original star Will Smith (who won’t be reprising his role), Goldblum knocked out the alien threat by administering a digital virus...

Jessie Usher Joins Independence Day 2
When Independence Day exploded onto the big screen in 1996, it became a box office smash hit. Its effective mix of science fiction, ground-breaking special effects, and disaster movie themes turned it into the quintessential summer blockbuster, and paved the way for director Roland Emmerich to wage cinematic war on countless iconic landmarks in subsequent movies, such as Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012 and White House Down. Surprisingly, a sequel has been slow to develop – but the wait is almost over now, as finally, almost two decades later, Independence Day 2 is on its way – with Jessie Usher now cast.

Plot details are, of course, tightly under wraps, but we can surmise from the casting that a high level of continuity can be expected. Jeff Goldblum will apparently reprise his role as codebreaker and day saviour, David Levinson, and Jessie Usher is set to play the son of Will Smith’s Independence Day character,...

Stargate Reboot Lands Two Writers
Looking back at the cinematic calendar for 1994 and the quantity of modern classics released within those 365 days is staggering. Pulp Fiction, Four Weddings And A Funeral, Forrest Gump… all mainstream hits that enraptured both audiences and critics. If you brush aside the popular chaff you’ll find a handful of genre gems; in particular, Roland Emmerich’s underrated sci-fi flick, Stargate.

Emmerich, currently gearing up to relaunch his blockbuster franchise Independence Day, is hard at work on simultaneously kickstarting the Stargate brand. The in-development movie – which is heralded as the beginning of a new trilogy – has now found its writers. According to a report from THR, Emmerich appears to be employing those with whom he’s already familiar. Nicolas Wright and James A. Woods, who helped ID2 land the greenlight thanks to their script, are now on board to pen the first Stargate instalment.

The duo have struck up a...

Stargate Remake Moves Forward with Writers
Last year we learned that Warner Bros. and MGM were going to develop a Stargate trilogy with director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin. They've been working on developing a new Stargate film for years, and it's continuing to move forward.

Nicolas Wright and James A. Woods are in final negotiations to write the script for the first film of the trilogy. The two writers recently worked together with Emmerich on Independence Day 2.  They obviously all had a good experience working with each other since they are teaming back up.

I've enjoyed the Stargate franchise over the years, from the first film to the several SyFy Channel series' that followed. The original plan for the first film was to turn it into a trilogy but they never got to make the other two films. I imagine this new set of movies will start from scratch and reinvent the franchise.

'Independence Day 2' Writers Board Emmerich's 'Stargate' Reboot
While Independence Day 2 is gearing up for production, with Liam Hemsworth being the latest potential addition to the cast of the sequel from director Roland Emmerich, one of the filmmaker's other properties getting the reboot treatment is making progress as well. As we learned last summer, Emmerich will be at the helm of a Stargate reboot, which is intended to be a trilogy, and now THR reports it will be Independence Day 2 writers Nicolas Wright & James A. Woods scripting the first film. The duo is relatively new to Hollywood, but it was their draft that got ID4-2 off the ground, so they must be doing something right. As of now, there are no details as to how this reboot will change things up, but the original film followed the discovery of a device that creates a wormhole to another world. Once activated, the government sends a military...

Stargate: Independence Day 2 writers board the reboot
The plan remains for three new Stargate films - and a pair of writers have got the job of penning the first of them...

Roland Emmerich finally starts shooting Independence Day 2 this year, ahead of its release next summer. And after that, he and producer Dean Devlin look like they're going to be pressing ahead with the planned movie reboot of Stargate.

It was revealed last year that the pair were looking at a new film trilogy for the series, and the project appears to have moved forward with the news that writers have now been recruited. James A Woods and Nicolas Wright, who worked on the script for Independence Day 2, have been hired to have a crack at the new Stargate feature.

It's unclear at this stage what the focus of the new trio of Stargate films will be. Will they, for instance, tie closely to Emmerich's original film,...

Stargate Remake Dials In Two Writers

'Stargate' Reboot Brings on 'Independence Day 2' Writers
Stargate : La Porte des étoiles (1994)
Independence Day 2 screenwriters Nicolas Wright and James A. Woods are reteaming with director Roland Emmerich to write the screenplay for his Stargate reboot. MGM announced back in May that Roland Emmerich will direct a whole new Stargate movie trilogy, that "reimagines" the original 1994 movie that starred Kurt Russell and James Spader. 20th Century Fox recently gave the green light for Independence Day 2, based on Nicolas Wright and James A. Independence Day 2: 10 Things You Need To Know About The Sequel
20th Century Fox

When it hit theatres in 1996, Independence Day (tagged ID4) was a box office smash with a lasting impact in Hollywood. It made a star – a bigger star, lets say – of Will Smith, who at that point was still the Fresh Prince to many. It reinvigorated the disaster flick by mixing it with the alien invasion genre, giving us something along the lines of Earthquake meets War Of The Worlds. And it seared the image of the White House exploding into the minds of movie-goers everywhere, an image that remains iconic to this day.

Others have come along and tried a similar approach, notably Cloverfield, which attempted to do with the Statue of Liberty what Independence Day did with the home of the American President.

A strong cast ensured that even with a rather hokey plot and frankly braindead ending (a computer virus coded in a human programming...
