Flying Lotus may be best known as a musician, winning a Grammy for producing Kendrick Lamar’s masterpiece To Pimp a Butterfly, but in the cinephile community, he is known as one of horror cinema’s most exciting sickos. His sophomore feature, Ash, offers every ounce of aesthetic style that fans will expect, but it is squandered on an uninteresting and derivative script.
Ash Review
Ash follows a woman who wakes up as the sole survivor of a vicious attack on her interplanetary mission as she sets out on a mission to discover what happened to the rest of her crew. It’s an unholy conglomeration of every sci-fi horror trope you can think of, from Alien to The Thing, resulting in a film that is very difficult to get invested in.
Because Ash is so generic, it ends up dragging despite a runtime that is just over 90 minutes. It...

Now that we know the Jason Statham action sequel The Beekeeper 2 is officially happening, genre fans are buzzing and have found the perfect martial arts icon to join The Stath in the highly anticipated follow-up. Taking to social media, Statham fans are pleading with The Beekeeper 2 director Timo Tjahjanto to add The Raid star Iko Uwais to proceedings, with X/Twitter user @Dedikur21 kicking things off by saying, “I beg you work with Iko Uwais again and cast him in Beekeeper 2. Make a proper round 2 for this two.”
Jason Statham and Iko Uwais have shared the screen, and exchanged punches, before in 2023’s Expend4bles. Sadly, while both actors committed to kicking each other to death, both the movie and the fight scene were ultimately a disappointment. Following his star rising thanks to his role in The Raid and The Raid 2, Hollywood has struggled to give Iko Uwais...

Indonesian star Iko Uwais, beloved by international action aficionados for his brutal and balletic work in Gareth Evans’ The Raid: Redemption and later performances in the Expendables and Skyline franchises, is stepping behind the camera as a producer and director. In late January, the action hero unveiled his new namesake Jakarta-based production banner, Uwais Pictures. Gersh is shopping the startup outfit’s first pair of action vehicles, both fully shot and nearly finished, to international buyers at Berlin’s European Film Market this week.
Since exploding onto the scene in the early 2010s with his fully formed silat martial arts mastery, Uwais has gone on to appear in productions across the world, including Snake Eyes, Stuber, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the Netflix series Wu Assassins, for which he also served as lead fight choreographer and executive producer.

Timo Tjahjanto, the director behind one of the biggest and best action movie hits on Netflix last year, The Shadow Strays, will reportedly reunite with action icon and The Night Comes for Us star Iko Uwais for the perfect new project. According to a now suspiciously removed report from THR, Tjahjanto and The Raid’s Iko Uwais will reunite for an adaptation of the neo-noir cyberpunk RPG Neon Blood, with the pitch for the movie promising “a bone-crunching kick to the face.” For action fans, this kick can’t land quickly enough.
This exciting information was revealed by X/Twitter user One Perfect HEADshot, who later stated that “Ok, The Hollywood Reporter have apparently removed all mentions of the film from their article now. The Raid star Iko Uwais is moving up from action star to director, as well as from director to studio head in one swift movement (not unlike his martial arts moves). The Indonesian martial arts star, whose style is a form called Silat, was recently seen in films like Expend4bles and will be in the upcoming Skyline: Warpath, with fellow action star Scott Adkins. Additionally, Uwais can be seen in the sci-fi thriller Ash, which stars Eiza Gonzalez and Aaron Paul, and it is due to release in March for a short theatrical release before streaming on Shudder.
Deadline has now reported that Uwais is unveiling the start of his own production company — Uwais Pictures. The launch of his production company will be emphasizing action films for its slate and the studio is already hitting the ground running with two movies ready for sale at the European Film Market in Berlin next month.

The Raid: Redemption star Iko Uwais is making action movie fans’ dreams come true today, with the genre icon and skilled martial artist not only launching his own production label, but lining up not one, but two new action movies. Best known for the blisteringly brilliant action movies The Raid and The Raid 2, as well as The Night Comes for Us, Snake Eyes, Expend4bles, and more, Iko Uwais will make his directorial debut with the action thriller Timur, in which he will also star.
As per a report by Deadline, Uwais will officially launch his production company, Uwais Pictures, “at next month’s EFM in Berlin.” The actor’s aim is to “replicate the success of modestly budgeted, local-language hits such as The Raid, The Raid: Redemption, and The Night Comes for Us,” with the company striving to incorporate “fight choreography, action design, and stunt performance from the inception of its projects.

Mark Wahlberg’s panned action thriller from 2018 is currently finding new life on streaming. Mile 22, which sees Wahlberg reunite with Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, and Patriots Day director Peter Berg, has now found its way into the top 10 on Starz, with audiences turning to this no-nonsense tale of Marky Mark and his leadership of an elite, top secret CIA unit.
Starring Mark Wahlberg, Iko Uwais, John Malkovich, Lauren Cohan, and Ronda Rousey, Mile 22 was met with largely negative reviews upon release. The action outing stands at just 23% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences slightly more enamored and scoring the movie 44% on the Popcornmeter. “Mile 22 lets the bullets fly -- and not much else -- in a thrill-deficient action thriller whose title proves sadly fitting for a film that feels close to a marathon endurance test,” the critics’ consensus reads. After a few acclaimed TV shows have ended their run, their stories have continued in the form of a TV movie. Considering the popularity of some TV shows, a sequel series or film makes sense as audiences are eager for more content regarding their favorite characters. Most of the time, sequel films aren't entirely necessary and are put out with the simple purpose of fulfilling fans' needs. In the case of Mr. Monk's Last Case, the character returned to TV screens, streaming on Peacock, as current events inspired an exploration as to how the detective with multiple phobias would live during the Covid-19 pandemic.
On the other hand, some sequel films were made to wrap up open-ended storylines. Films inspired by Breaking Bad and Alf answered some lingering questions regarding Jesse Pinkman and Alf's fate. Though they're not always needed, these TV films based on TV shows are still largely...

One of the greatest action movies, not just of the modern era but of all time, is now available to stream for free. That's right, you can now bear witness to martial arts and action movie mastery without spending a single cent as 2014s The Raid 2 lands on Tubi TV this month. Directed by Gareth Evans and starring Iko Uwais, Arifin Putra, Oka Antara, Tio Pakusadewo, Alex Abbad, Julie Estelle, Ryuhei Matsuda, Kenichi End, and Kazuki Kitamura, it is not hyperbolic to say that The Raid 2 is a blood-drenched symphony of violence and action movie artistry that makes most other movies of the genre look like easily defeated henchmen.
A sequel to 2011s The Raid, the Indonesian action thriller that tells the simple, isolated story of an elite squad tasked with infiltrating a high-rise building run by a ruthless drug lord, The Raid 2 picks up with Iko Uwais character,...

Many film historians speculate that cinema's first martial arts movie was Zhang Shichuan's The Burning of the Red Lotus Temple. Released in 16 parts between 1928 and 1931, The Burning of the Red Lotus Temple ran 27 hours long. Unfortunately, The Burning of the Red Lotus Temple is now a lost film, but there are plenty of incredible martial arts films that now exist to help fill the void.
It was not until the late 1960s that martial arts movies began to appeal to international audiences. Cheng Pei-pei and Jimmy Wang Yu were among the first internationally recognized martial arts movie stars thanks to their performances in films such as Come Drink with Me and The One-Armed Swordsman. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, martial arts movies produced by Shaw Brothers Studio and Golden Harvest turned actors such as Bruce Lee, Alexander Fu Sheng, Gordon Liu, Sammo Hung, and Jackie Chan into cinema's greatest action movie stars.

Nobody 2 can fix John Wick's lack of top martial arts stars, with Timo Tjahjanto directing and possibly casting Iko Uwais. Tjahjanto's history of intense action films like The Night Comes for Us showcases his potential to elevate Nobody 2. Iko Uwais' impressive martial arts skills make him the perfect fit for Nobody 2, which could surpass the action in John Wick.
Although the John Wick movies still havent cast one of the best living martial arts stars, Nobody 2 can now make up for this shortcoming. The John Wick movies are spectacular. Since director Chad Stahelskis original action thriller was released in 2014, the series has only increased its scope, critical acclaim, and box office success. While John Wick made a respectable $86 million upon release, John Wick: Chapter 4 earned a staggering $440 million. The fact that the original movie cost approximately $20 million and John Wick: Chapter 4s budget was $100 million showcases its expanding scale.

Iko Uwais has been practicing the Indonesian martial art of pencak silat since he was 10 years old. Uwais was discovered by Welsh filmmaker Gareth Evans in 2007 when Evans was making a documentary about silat. Uwais learned the fighting style from his grandfather, who founded the Tiga Beranti Silat School in 1974.
Indonesian actor Iko Uwais has one of the most extraordinary fighting styles used in modern martial arts movies. Gaining popularity from Gareth Evans' gripping The Raid movies and being seen as a wasted martial artist in The Expendables 4, Uwais has started to become a household name in action films. Over the last decade, Uwais, alongside his often-on-screen fighting partner, Joe Taslim, has delivered some of the most fast-paced, brutal, and satisfying fight scenes throughout the genre. Though he broke out in 2011's The Raid: Redemption, he's just now starting to appear in major Hollywood films.

Action movies are a favored pastime of moviegoers, thanks to the genre's visually engaging stories that typically follow heroes taking on an oversized army of bad guys. Motivated by everything from revenge to rescue missions, the genre's heroes are some of the most iconic of cinema, with an equally entertaining roster of villains. The 2010s saw something of a reinvention of action movies, with the rise of new genres raising the bar for what a good movie can be.
The 2010s had its ups and downs when it comes to action, with some incredibly underwhelming sequels to classic franchises stacked against some brilliant fresh films. With some brilliant choreography, instant-classic quotes, and an ensemble of interesting heroes and villains, the decade houses many of the best action films of all time. With no casting information for John Wick 5, any number of martial arts stars could join the franchise. Michelle Yeoh could bring her legendary martial arts skills to John Wick 5, potentially elevating the franchise even further. Jason Statham, known for his action roles, could be an interesting choice to continue the John Wick franchise without Keanu Reeves.
Although John Wick 5 has been confirmed, there is no information about casting yet, so it's unclear whether the franchise will maintain the tradition of casting martial arts stars in important roles. Hollywood often wastes the talent of martial arts actors by giving them minor roles or poorly developing their characters. Films like The Force Awakens and Mortal Kombat failed to fully utilize the skills of premier martial artists like Iko Uwais and Joe Talsim. Even well-known martial artists like Jackie Chan and Donnie Yen have been underutilized in Western movies, missing opportunities for their talent to shine.
Martial artists often don't get enough respect in Hollywood, evidenced by a history of underutilization in Blockbuster films. As a genre, martial arts movies are relatively insular, having a whole universe of stars who need to be not only great actors, but expert combatants, choreographers, and stunt people to hone their craft to perfection. Every now and then, Hollywood will seek to appease the predominantly overseas audiences of the genre with cameos from some of the best martial arts actors in the business, to mixed effects.

Warning: Spoilers for The Expendables 4 below.
Tony Jaa and Iko Uwais are wasted in The Expendables 4, with the movie not giving them enough time to show their skills. Dan Chupong and Mike Moeller are overlooked in the film, despite their impressive skills as martial artists. The Expendables 4 missed a huge opportunity by not giving Chupong and Moeller more significant roles and fight scenes with the main cast.
The Expendables 4 brings its mercenary crew back to the big screen for another mission, but also wastes the talents of two fantastic martial artists in the process. Arriving in theaters nine years after The Expendables 3, The Expendables 4 failed to reinvigorate the ensemble action franchise with poor reviews and the series's lowest opening weekend yet. The movie's disappointment is that much more unfortunate with Ong Bak's Tony Jaa and The Raid's Iko Uwais joining The Expendables franchise at last.

Plot: The Expendables go after a team of mercenaries connected to a legendary arms dealer whose identity is unknown.
Review: Millennium Media has taken nine years to develop a fourth entry into the Expendables series. Things have changed in the near-decade since the last movie, which is reflected in the fact that this series instalment is much smaller scale than the ones that came before it. It’s primarily a spin-off entry for Jason Statham’s Lee Christmas, with the titular Expendables only supporting our hero on a personal mission, with Sylvester Stallone’s Barney Ross contributing little more than a cameo.
While that’s undeniably disappointing, Expend4bles is still a fun enough action flick if you keep your expectations in check. The budget seems much smaller than it was for the previous films, with abysmal CGI. Most of the action is confined to a cargo ship, as the Expendables...

A title that started ironically has now become all too accurate when it comes to the belated fourth installment of Sylvester Stallone’s action franchise. Arriving a full nine years after the poorly received prior entry, Expend4bles — the number is in the middle of the word, get it? — represents a nadir for a series that began as an entertainingly nostalgic throwback to old-school action movies and the square-jawed muscle men who starred in them. This edition — essentially a sub-par Jason Statham vehicle (after this and Meg 2: The Trench, some quality control might be in order for the actor) featuring a brief appearance by Stallone and several new castmembers who fail to make much of an impression — indicates that it’s time to put a fork in the series; it’s done.

"Yeah, we watched all the previous Expendables and a lot of the films starring the other actors, so that we could see what they haven't done before and what type of style would suit them best," Ng said.

Both Statham and Uwais have strong resumes when it comes to action, with the former having starred in the likes of The Transporter and Crank, and the latter being best known for The Raid and its sequel.

The Expendables franchise almost had some major Hollywood actors as its next villain, including Jack Nicholson and Bruce Willis. Iko Uwais plays the villain in Expend4bles, bringing a new direction and showcasing his impressive stunt and martial arts skills. Other potential villains considered were Bill Goldberg, Dwayne Johnson, Hulk Hogan, and even Jean-Claude Van Damme's character's twin brother.
The Expendables franchise is known for starring world-famous macho movie stars, but Expend4bles was nearly even bigger than the rest considering the actors who were almost cast as the movie's villain. In the past, the franchise has featured a revolving door of heavyweight action heroes, including Jet Li, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, and a ton of others while retaining its two consistent stars, Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham. The Expend4bles cast isn't quite as impressive, but it does introduce several big-name performers such as Megan Fox, 50 Cent, and Andy Garcia.

The Expendables movies are known for their star-studded casts and non-stop action, making them an appealing choice for fans of the genre. Other movies like "Triple Threat," "Hobbs & Shaw," and "Escape Plan" offer similar action-packed experiences and can be enjoyable to watch before the release of The Expendables 4.

Movies without A-list actors can still achieve critical acclaim and commercial success through compelling narratives and exceptional performances from unknown actors. These successful films often captivate audiences with heartwarming stories, gripping dramas, and unique premises, showcasing the power of storytelling over star power. Despite their success, these movies haven't changed the perception that familiar stars are one of the primary appeals for audiences, as Hollywood still prioritizes casting A-list actors.
The casting of A-list actors is typically a priority for filmmakers in order to achieve success, yet plenty of movies still wind up being tremendously successful without featuring any major stars. Whether they're movies made under restricted budgets or international and indie gems resonating with different cultures, these outliers have become hits simply by captivating viewers with their compelling narratives and exceptional performances from no-name actors. Sony has just dropped a new poster for The Expendables 4, stylized as Expend4bles, while announcing that the trailer will also be releasing on June 7. The poster teases the action that's in store for fans in the sequel, showcasing a skull that's outfitted with various blades and firearms - some of which are on fire. Also unveiled is the tag line, "They'll die when they're dead," along with the names of the returning cast members and the new stars. You can view the poster below.
The new film brings back Jason Statham alongside fellow franchise stars Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, and Randy Couture. The newcomers include Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Megan Fox, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, and Andy Garcia. Nine months ago, it was announced that Tessa Thompson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt had signed on to star in Ash, a sci-fi thriller from rapper and filmmaker Flying Lotus, a.k.a. Steven Ellison. Then, two months ago, we learned that Thompson and Gordon-Levitt both had to drop out of the project and were replaced by Eiza González (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad). Filming on Ash is now underway, with González and Paul in the lead roles – and Deadline has revealed that they’re being joined in the cast by Beulah Koale (Hawaii Five-o), Kate Elliott (The Gulf), and Iko Uwais of the Raid films.
González will be playing a woman who wakes on a far-flung planet to find her crew mysteriously murdered. When a man (Paul) comes to investigate the scene, she must decide if she can trust him or if he’s responsible for her series of unfortunate events.

Iko Uwais' debut movie Merantau poised The Raid films for success in several key ways. Released in Indonesia in 2009 and releasing internationally in 2010, Merantau follows a young man named Yuda (Uwais), who ventures from his tiny village to Jakarta and encounters a human trafficking operation. Armed only with his skills as a Silat exponent, Yuda must fight to stop the ring's overlords Ratger (Mad Koudal) and Luc (Laurent Busan) and save the captive Astri (Sisca Jessica) and her brother Adit (Yusuf Aulia).
Written and directed by Welsh-born filmmaker Gareth Evans, Merantau was a big hit, but it was his and Uwais's follow-up movie The Raid: Redemption that truly shot them both to stardom in 2012, with Evans and Uwais re-teaming again in 2014 for The Raid 2. Everything from the Bruce Lee-based series Warrior to Marvel's Daredevil has been influenced by The Raid's impact on action movies and fight choreography. However,...

The two punching scenes in The Raid movies each have a deeper meaning relating to the two film’s stories, and this is something that many viewers miss upon first watch. Writer-director Gareth Evans and leading man Iko Uwais burst onto the action movie scene with 2012’s The Raid: Redemption, which follows a Jakarta police unit in a deadly raid of an apartment complex populated by the city’s worst criminals. 2014’s The Raid 2 followed up its predecessor with Uwais’s protagonist Rama going undercover to infiltrate a Jakarta crime family.
The Raid movies became action classics overnight, with their amazing fight sequences making a martial arts star of Iko Uwais, along with his co-stars, Joe Taslim and Yayan Ruhian. If you grew up in a small Welsh village and studied for a career in documentary filmmaking, what would be the logical next step? Make a string of high-intensity Indonesian action movies, of course. And that's exactly what director Gareth Evans did after becoming captivated by the martial art of Pencak silat. His breakthrough effort, "The Raid" or in the US "The Raid: Redemption" gained widespread recognition for its non-stop action and brutal fight scenes. The movie showcased Pencak silat, and relative newcomer Iko Uwais as rookie cop Rama, in a way that hadn't really been seen before — at least in the west. And the plot? As simple as 20 cops fighting their way through 30 floors of a tower block to bring down one drug dealer.
And it was a winning formula, with reviews for the movie proving as bombastic as the film itself. The Hollywood Reporter called it a "hard-driving,...

The Raid 2’s fight scenes exemplify the sequel's much larger scale over The Raid: Redemption. After the 2012 success of The Raid, writer-director Gareth Evans and leading man Iko Uwais re-united for the 2014 sequel The Raid 2. Reconfigured from an unrealized earlier project of Evans’s called Berandal, The Raid 2 would be heralded right alongside The Raid as an instant action classic.
Far from simply rehashing the action-horror plot and video game movie structure of The Raid, The Raid 2 is a very different sequel with a plot steeped in organized crime. The Raid 2 is also a much longer movie, running 150 minutes to The Raid’s 101 minutes with a much more complex story and larger scope. The martial arts fights of The Raid 2 are highly reflective of this difference with how much bigger the action scenes are.

The upcoming The Expendables 4 will finally break the series' obsession with action icons. The Expendables is a film franchise centered on an ensemble of action movie stars, led by Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham, playing a team of elite mercenaries who carry out various missions, usually for a mysterious handler known only as Mr. Church (Bruce Willis). The series was created with the intention of paying homage to the style of 1980s action movies and bringing the stars that led those movies back into the limelight. For instance, The Expendables was the first theatrically released film for Dolph Lundgren since 1995's cyberpunk box office bomb Johnny Mnemonic. As well as paying homage to former action movie stars, The Expendables was created to help usher in a new generation of action heroes, including Top Gun: Maverick's Glen Powell and Furious 7's Ronda Rousey.
