Zenithal Review: A French Farce of Phallic Proportions
Image
French cinema often operates with a casual frankness about the body that can feel startling to outside audiences. Zenithal takes this tradition and pushes it into the realm of high farce. The film introduces us to Francis, a dry cleaner living a life of quiet desperation. His glory days, which bizarrely involved being the on-screen nemesis to a martial arts master with a supernaturally large penis, are long past.

His relationship with his partner, Sonia, a self-defense instructor, has stalled. To fix things, she has imposed a strict six-month period of sexual abstinence, a project meant to force them to connect on a higher plane. Francis, feeling useless and adrift, is ill-equipped for this challenge.

The film immediately establishes a world where the anxieties of modern masculinity are not just discussed but given literal, absurd physical form. It’s a strange and provocative setup, a uniquely Gallic satire that uses...

Tony Awards: Predicting the Winners Using Just Math
Image
The world will descend on New York on Sunday night, by way of the 78th Tony Awards. Shows set in the U.S., the U.K., Cuba, Italy, and Iran all make their way to the nominees circle. Not to mention a show from South Korea projected to win more Tonys than any other production, potentially the first one ever to premiere in Asia and win best musical.

And when I say “projected,” I mean that mathematically. Every year, I run a statistical model based on precursor awards, which categories a show is nominated in, blended critic predictions, and betting markets to project the odds that each nominee will emerge victorious in every category. After another wonderful year on Broadway, with 42 new shows opening and 29 of them receiving nominations, it’s time to get excited for the big night with a data-based forecast at who might triumph at Radio City...

A Widow’s Game Ending Explained & Plot Summary: Who Was Arturo’s Killer?
Image
What makes movies of the true crime subgenre work is that the allure of probing into the mind of criminals is too fascinating for audiences to miss. While there remains an undeniable ethical issue regarding these movies cashing in on tragedies, a nuanced representation can contribute to doing justice by the victims by showing the truth to the world. Netflix’s latest crime thriller, A Widow’s Game, a fictional recreation of the 2017 murder investigation of Engineer Antonio Navarro Cerdan, does just that by keeping the narrative focus on the perspectives and mental mapping of perps and investigators without curtailing the significance of the actual event. While the investigation itself is pretty basic, the question of what self-serving motives can drive people to go to such heinous lengths is surely shocking if not scary.

Spoilers Ahead

What Made Maje A Suspect?

A Widow’s Game begins by guiding viewers through the perspective of Eva Torres,...

27 Years Of Tanuja Chandra’s Dushman starring Kajol
Image
Subhash K Jha looks back at Tanuja Chandra’s 1998 film Dushman, which starred Kajol in a brilliant performance and Sanjay Dutt. We also hear from the director about the making of the film.

Tanuja Chandra’s grossly underrated film, Dushman, features Kajol in her career-best performance in a double role. When one of the twins is brutally murdered, the other takes revenge. The film was adapted from John Schlesinger’s tepid thriller An Eye For An Eye, where Sally Field avenged the death of her daughter. Several clever changes were made to the original script. In the original, it is the mother (Sally Field) who goes on a vendetta spree against her daughter’s rapist and murderer. In Dushman, it is the twin sister (Kajol) who seeks retribution, while the mother(Tanve Azmi) seeks closure to the tragedy. Dushman also added a romantic angle to the original with Sanjay Dutt...

“Guts kidnaps Sonia, forces her to read his mind”: The Perfect Berserk Ending We Wanted From Kentaro Miura
Image
The world of manga was left in utter despair as the legendary mangaka, Kentaro Miura, passed away in 2021, at the age of 54. Because of that, he couldn’t even finish his signature work, Berserk, which is arguably the best-written piece of fiction to ever exist.

While Miura’s friend and fellow artist Kouji Mori stepped in to continue the series, you can still feel there’s something off. That unmistakable touch of Miura that made Berserk, “Berserk,” is nowhere to be found.

However, ever since then, many fans have tried to come up with their own interpretation of how Miura must have planned the ending. Recently, one such fan theory has popped up, and quite surprisingly, it has also resonated deeply with the community. This homemade conclusion might just be the perfect sendoff for Guts’ epic storyline.

Guts could use Sonia’s powers to turn her against Griffith

We already know how powerful Sonia is,...

10 Highest Grossing Horror Movies Of 2024
Image
Worldwide gross figures have been rounded up or down to the nearest million.

By and large, 2024 has proved to be a great year for horror films. The storied genre has produced several critically acclaimed outings, many of which have been lauded as some of the finest horror movies of the 2020s. From exciting new arrivals staking a claim as the genre's new kid on the block to electrifying sequels from prominent horror staples, the year's best horror movies have received rave reviews from fans and critics alike for their innate capacity to shock, disgust, and terrify in blockbuster fashion.

However, while it definitely doesn't hurt, all the critical acclaim in the world is no guarantee of commercial success in Hollywood. While many of the best horror movies of 2024 produced impressive commercial returns to match their glowing reviews, several prominent genre outings proved that good feedback decidedly wasn't a necessity for financial success.

‘Gavin & Stacey’ Star Laura Aikman Kept Sonia’s Finale Appearance Secret From Her Own Family: ‘I Take an NDA Very Seriously’
Image
“Gavin & Stacey” star Laura Aikman took her NDA so seriously she even kept her appearance in the 90-minute special a secret from her own family.

Aikman, who plays the widely-disliked Sonia in the cult BBC series, posted a video of herself watching “Gavin & Stacey: The Finale” on Christmas Day with her family, who appeared to have no idea she was about to make an appearance on screen. In the scene, James Corden, who co-created and stars in the series, is shown into a room to meet his “bride-to-be,” with the audience led to assume it’s his on-again-off-again partner Nessa (fellow co-creator Ruth Jones). Instead, it’s Sonia.

In the video Aikman showed her family screaming with surprise as they watched the scene, with Aikman laughing while a woman who appears to be her mother shouts “Oh my God… you never told me!”

Aikman captioned the video: “I take an NDA very seriously.

The History Of Ninja Gaiden: Why The Blasphemous Devs Are The Perfect Fit
Image
Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound is the latest entry in a long-running series that has been around for 36 years. Koei Tecmo has brought main protagonist Ryu Hayabusa to arcades, the Nintendo Entertainment System, original Xbox, Xbox 360, PC, and more. Not only is Hayabusa a star of his own franchise, but he has been a staple of both Dead or Alive and Warriors Orochi. The ninja’s fast-paced, precise action will easily be elevated by Blasphemous devs, The Game Kitchen.

While many games bear the Ninja Gaiden brand, continuity can get very convoluted. The original arcade title was not intended to be a franchise, and offers very little setup. Hayabusa was only meant to be a part of the ensemble cast in Dead or Alive. When the fighting game exploded, though, Koei Tecmo attempted to reconcile the storylines of the third-gen and sixth-gen titles. It is now up to each player to decide if the publisher succeeded.

The True Story Behind Ted Danson's 'A Man on the Inside,' Explained
Image
Hearing the premise of A Man on the Inside, the new Netflix sitcom starring Ted Danson, it's easy to assume the whole thing was cooked up by sitcom writers. But as it turns out, the series created by The Good Place and Parks and Recreation showrunner Michael Schur actually has roots in the real world. Not only that, but the whole event was made into a documentary back in 2020.

The sitcom follows a recently widowed retiree named Charles (Danson), who is hired by a private investigator named Julie (Lilah Richcreek Estrada) to pose as a new resident of an elder care facility in order to covertly look into a client's concern that a prized piece of family jewelry was stolen. Being an outgoing and approachable type, Charles doesn't make for the most covert spy, but he quickly befriends many of the residents and learns that what they're really missing is human connection.

Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Still Has One Big Unanswered Question
Image
Although it was somewhat drowned out at the awards last year thanks to other brilliant games, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom presented players with a worthy sequel to 2017's Game of the Year, Breath of the Wild. It brought more storytelling and plot compared to the first game, although it still leaves one unanswered question: who is the Ancient Hero?

Many characters from the first title are seen again in Totk, and seem to have grown significantly from the first game, such as the Gerudo Chief Riju and the scientist Purah. Curiously, Link seems to look largely the same despite the time skip, except for a new magical arm, and has to watch on while a lot of his friends outgrow him, but when it comes to the Ancient Hero, players are still at a loss as to their true identity.

Who Is The Ancient Hero From Botw? Totk Doesn't...

Pokmon's Worst Villain Actually Confirms What Makes The Anime So Essential To The Franchise
Image
One of Pokmon's least developed villains is without a doubt Chairman Rose of Sword and Shield, who offers very little justification as to why he's performing the actions that he does, which ultimately lead to disaster. However, with the addition of one small scene, the anime managed to repair his character, proving one of the anime's essential duties in the franchise.

In the games, Chairman Rose is seeking to harness the power provided by Eternatus, a dangerous Legendary Pokmon, in order to ensure Galar has enough energy for "a thousand years." Rose consults Leon about his plan, but Leon's focus is on the tournament which will be taking place tomorrow, and asks that Rose delay his plans until after the tournament. Rose is unwilling to delay even this brief period, despite his plan not really requiring immediate action, and he accidentally sets into motion the events of a new Darkest...

Noah’s Ark Review: A Soggy Sail on the High Seas of Storytelling
Image
Deep in the Brazilian rainforest, a musical adaptation of a very old story was brought to life. Animators transformed Noah, his family, and a boatload of animals into a menagerie of singing singers. At its heart was a pair of mouse musicians determined to make their talents float.

Viewers familiar with the Bible may recall the tale of Noah, who long ago was tasked by God with preserving all life amidst a worldwide flood. Only Noah, his family, and two of every kind of animal would fit on a massive ark to survive the deluge. It’s a foundational part of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, showing humanity’s first fresh start after sin destroyed the world.

This animated film adapts the biblical account into a colorful musical. Directed by Sérgio Machado and Alois Di Leo, it refocuses the story around two mice in 1920s Rio de Janeiro: musician duo Tito and Vini.
