Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has reportedly outlined the core quartet of heroes that will serve as the foundational pillars of the burgeoning DC cinematic universe (Dcu): Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Supergirl. This strategic framework appears to guide the initial, Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters phase of the rebooted superhero franchise.
While Wonder Woman does not currently have a standalone film project on the immediate horizon, with the Amazon-centric series Paradise Lost understood to be set centuries before Diana's birth, DC Studios co-chair James Gunn has recently alluded to ongoing, unannounced developments for the iconic Amazonian warrior.
Superman is firmly established with his solo film slated for release later this summer. Batman is also set for a prominent presence, appearing alongside Robin in The Brave and the Bold, in addition to a shadowy cameo in the animated series Creature Commandos. Supergirl's introduction is also anticipated within this initial chapter.

The Dceu began with ambitious plans to match the success of the MCU, with Warner Bros. aiming to bring iconic DC characters to the big screen over a decade. Despite financial success, Snyder’s darker vision for the characters didn’t resonate with audiences, leading to the eventual reboot with James Gunn’s Dcu. While some Dceu films were well-received, others were considered significant flops.
Fans have compiled their picks for the 10 worst Dceu movies. Let’s dive into their selections.
10. ‘The Suicide Squad’ (2021)
After the mixed reception of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad (2016), expectations were high for James Gunn’s take on the franchise. However, some fans were disappointed as the film didn’t meet their expectations or align with their preferences. Gunn’s signature irreverent humor and over-the-top style, which were successful in movies like Guardians of the Galaxy, didn’t resonate with everyone, contributing to its place in the “top 10 worst” rankings.

Warning: Spoilers for Black Canary: Best of The Best #6The battle to determine the true champion of the DC Universe has finally ended, leaving one hero to claim the title. The fight wasn't easy, and proved to be more brutal than any comic fans expected, but there is no denying it: Black Canary has defeated Lady Shiva to claim the crown as DC's best fighter.
The dramatic victory arrives in the final issue of Tom King and Ryan Sook's stellar Black Canary: Best of The Best, chronicling the prize fight seen around the world, in which former Justice League leader Dinah Lance stood against Lady Shiva, famous as the world's most deadliest assassin. While squaring off against the most skilled killer on the planet would be doom for some, Black Canary went the distance to beat Shiva to a pulp, and put her down for the count.

Over a decade before the Arrowverse shows and their crossover events set the standard on The CW, its predecessor, The WB, was already experimenting with similar ideas involving multiple DC Comics superheroes teaming up to fight evil. On October 9, 2002, the network's "Birds of Prey" introduced a Batman-free version of Gotham City where crime runs rampant and familiar faces from the DC universe clash.
From a modern point of view, the show had a lot going for it. Its promo clips heavily suggested that its events existed in (a version of) the same continuity as the Tim Burton Batman movies -- not that this stopped the series from briefly introducing a distinctly new version of the Joker, as voiced by none other than Mark Hamill. As its main character, "Birds of Prey" had Helena "Huntress" Kyle (Ashley Scott), the super-powered daughter of Catwoman and Batman. Teaming up with former Batgirl Barbara Gordon...

When done correctly, musical films can transcend genres.
In 2022, director Todd Phillips announced a sequel to Joker (2019) was being made and was titled Joker: Folie á Deux. This announcement was shortly followed by the reveal that Folie á Deux would in fact be a musical, with Lady Gaga set to portray Harley Quinn. While fans went gaga over the casting, the musical aspect was baffling to many. After all, why would the sequel to a non-musical comic book film, all of a sudden become a musical?
In 2024, that question was answered with an extremely polarizing because Joker: Folie á Deux was an incredibly lackluster follow up to the 2019 film, but was this due to the musical element? In the same year, Marvel Studios and Disney+ released Agatha All Along, only to find praise for the spellbinding story and magical music. Both of these comic book projects featured musical elements, but...

"Smallville" ran for 10 seasons, but its impact can't be measured only by how long it stayed on the air. The CW's Arrowverse doesn't exist without "Smallville." Now, "Arrow" did not share a continuity with "Smallville" and it recast its Oliver Queen. But still, even without "Arrow" being a proper "Smallville" spin-off, The CW greenlighting a Green Arrow show clearly happened because "Smallville" had introduced the character to their audience.
But there could've been a Green Arrow-led TV series much sooner, one starring Justin Hartley. During "Smallville" season 6, writer Steven DeKnight was working on a Justice League spin-off.
Beginning in season 4 of "Smallville," Clark Kent (Tom Welling) slowly begins meeting other DC superheroes. In "Run," it's Bart Allen/Impulse (Kyle Gallner). Season 5 had Arthur Curry/Aquaman (Alan Ritchson) in "Aqua" and then Victor Stone/Cyborg (Lee Thompson Young) in, well, "Cyborg." Then season 6 brought in Green Arrow (Hartley) as a recurring character.

DC's Arrow began in the Fall of 2012, airing its eighth and final season between October 2019 and January 2020. Central to the narrative were Oliver Queen and Felicity Smoak, played by Stephen Amell and Emily Bett Rickards respectively. Prior to the pair appearing in the western thriller Calamity Jane, which hit theaters in February. It had been several years since the pair shared a screen together. There are fans who hope for an Olicity reunion, and it would seem that one half of that team is willing to make it happen, as Rickards recently revealed a willingness to reprise the role.

For an animated show that represents one of the most uncompromising artistic visions ever produced for children's TV, "Batman: The Animated Series" sure had to jump through a lot of hoops for its network. Fox censorship meant there were nine things "Batman: The Animated Series" couldn't do, though the writers frequently found ways of circumventing the network's dictates, such as when "The New Batman Adventures" (as the show was later renamed) used Scarecrow to pull one over on the censors.
It's a testament to the talent of the writers, artists, and voice actors that they were able to make such a seminal piece of work in "B:tas" despite being somewhat hindered in their mission to tell more mature stories. Often, however, the writers were extremely hampered in their efforts to craft particular storylines. After all, it wasn't just the censors...

Losing a dream role can still sting many years later, which appears to be the case for Katie Cassidy. With her role as Laurel Lance, also known as Black Canary, Katie Cassidy played one of the biggest roles on the hit Arrowverse series Arrow. At one point, however, she was killed off, a decision that gave her a flurry of emotions at the time.
Cassidy discussed her time on Arrow during a recent interview for the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast, per Deadline. She recalled how she learned of Black Canary's death in 2016 after she served as a big part of Arrow for the first four seasons. Famously, the season started with the reveal that a character's death would happen, though it wasn't until later that it was revealed to be Laurel. Despite that big tease, Cassidy was still quite shocked when she realized she was the one on the chopping block.

Zack Snyder has had a fun run pushing the boundaries of CGI with most of his projects. His vision for films like The Watchmen, 300, Rebel Moon, and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, all relied on heavy CGI mixed with some brilliant acting and direction on the part of Snyder himself.

However, in an interview during the promotion of the Rebel Moon‘s Director’s Cut, Zack Snyder revealed that perhaps he would like to take a back seat from special effects and focus on a film that employs a few more organic shots. Shortly after Smallville concluded on The CW, the network launched its next superhero TV series in 2012 with Arrow. Stephen Amell was cast as Green Arrow and, as the years passed, his show spawned several spin-offs and a shared DC Universe later dubbed the "Arrowverse."
The show's achievements are undeniable but it had a lot of "CW-isms." Among them was giving Green Arrow a geeky female sidekick in Emily Bett Rickards' Felicity Smoak, the spiritual successor to Smallville's Chloe Sullivan.
Felicity was soon established as Oliver Queen's true love, a decision that upset those eager to see his romance with Black Canary fully explored.
Doing the rounds to promote her new movie, Queen of the Ring, Rickards - who plays wrestling legend Mildred Burke in the biopic - reflected on needing a thick skin in response to the criticisms.

When it debuted in 2008, "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" reintroduced a more lighthearted tone to the Dark Knight's animated escapades. Ever since "Batman: The Animated Series" attained legendary status with its mature storylines and alluringly dark aesthetic, Batman cartoons had tried somewhat to emulate that approach. But "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" diverged, using a more comedic tone to appeal to younger audiences and discarding the brooding, noirish elements that had made "B:tas" such a hit.
Based on "The Brave and the Bold" comic series which ran from 1955 to 1983, the show saw Batman teaming up with various and mostly lesser-known DC heroes, with each episode telling a standalone story involving the Dark Knight and his chosen teammate of the week. Zanier characters such as Detective Chimp would show up in this more outlandish show, which also featured more obscure villains including Starro, the main villain in James Gunn's "The Suicide Squad.

Arrow aired on The CW for 8 seasons, 170 episodes, and launched a TV universe that spanned across eight different shows. The first episode of Arrow’s Season 4 features Oliver Queen standing over an unknown grave, and whose it was, wouldn’t be revealed for months –not even to the cast.
Speaking at a panel at Megacon Orlando, per Cbr, Willa Holland, who played Thea Queen – as well as her superhero alter ego, Speedy – described the general air of mystery and anxiety surrounding the season four reveal. "At the end of this episode in the season, Oliver was standing over a grave and no one knew who it was," Holland said. "We didn’t know until 6 months later. I thought it was me and I was packing my bags. We were all afraid we were going to get killed."

No one is ever truly gone in the world of comic books. Through various supernatural ways that be can used in specific lores to revive dearly departed characters to the endless possibilities of the multiverse that can bring in alternate versions of those characters from another world, the comic book medium has defied the natural order of things time and time again.
Remember how Arrow revived Sara Lance using the Lazarus Pit? What about how it brought in the Earth-2 version of her sister, the Black Canary, after senselessly killing off the Earth-1 version? That's just one example of that, and the Arrowverse franchise as a whole was arguably ahead of its time considering the multiverse is everywhere nowadays - largely due to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's take on the phenomenon.

Though some of you may not even be aware of this, Warner Bros. aired a Birds of Prey TV series back in 2002, which ran for 13 episodes before being abruptly cancelled despite relatively strong ratings.
The show was set in an alternate DC Comics reality, taking place years after Batman abandoned Gotham City (now known as New Gotham) and focusing on a trio of heroes joining forces as the city's new protectors in the Dark Knight's absence.
The team was made up of Bruce Wayne and Selena Kyle's daughter Helene Kyle/Huntress (Ashley Scott), Barbara Gordon/Oracle (Dina Meyer), and Dinah Redmond/Black Canary (Rachel Skarsten), with Doctor Harleen Quinzel (Mia Sara) as their main adversary.
Birds of Prey is not exactly well-regarded (and wasn't at the time), but it has since gained something of a cult following, with most of the episodes available to watch on YouTube.

When Zack Snyder made Man of Steel with Henry Cavill, there were no plans of building a Dceu. However, DC executives were eager to catch up with Marvel, who were thriving with their superhero franchise. In their misguided vision for a DC franchise, the studio tried many things unsuccessfully before opting for a complete restructuring under James Gunn.

The Dceu already underwent several course corrections before the restructuring, resulting in a bunch of canceled or abandoned projects. After the new regime took over control, all planned films in the former Dceu were effectively canceled.

DC Comics' Absolute line has been a massive success, and author Kelly Thompson's Absolute Wonder Woman has been a huge part of that. Thompson has an impressive resume, as a long-time writer in the comic book industry, and fans discovering her for the first time through Absolute Wonder Woman have a number of great books from her worth checking out.
Thompson has a rich history working in the superhero genre, having written hit series for both Marvel and DC Comics. For Marvel, she has helped take several of the publisher's characters and elevated them to the next level, while prior to Absolute Wonder Woman here main contribution to DC was Birds of Prey.

Starfire is one of DC’s most iconic and beloved heroines, but beyond her role as a powerhouse member of the Teen Titans, she’s often relegated to being just a love interest. While I’m not entirely opposed to a well-done romance arc for the Tamaranean Princess, I’d much rather see her star in an A-tier solo series that explores themes beyond love first.
While this may be a divisive opinion, I believe Tom Taylor would be a fantastic choice to helm a Starfire solo series.
There’s no denying that Starfire is one of DC’s most badass female characters and a favorite among fans. Yet, it’s surprising that the comic publisher hasn’t put more effort into developing her character beyond being a member of the Titans or a love interest for characters like Nightwing and Arsenal.

Allie Martina, a professional romance novel narrator, and Jill Ruby, an award-winning podcast producer, are proud to announce Zipless, a unique new podcast that explores the luscious, literary (and often illicit) sounds and stories behind romance novels and audiobooks. About the Podcast
Women have been reading and writing about romance for centuries. But in the past few decades, what was once considered a scandalous and secretive pastime has now burst proudly onto the open market. In fact, romance novels account for nearly a quarter of all adult print fiction sold in the United States. This year alone, six of the top 10 best-selling fiction authors in the U.S. are romance writers. Just over 10 percent of all audiobooks sold were romance, and romance is one of the fastest selling audiobook genres.

After multiple issues, controversies, personnel changes, and mergers, the Dceu is finally done and dusted, with James Gunn taking over the reins as co-chief of DC Studios along with Peter Safran. The franchise, which was supposed to be a competitor to the MCU, crashed and burned but it was not without some genuinely good films.
The SnyderVerse is never happening. It is a miracle that fans even got the Snyder Cut. However, like how Gunn took the disastrous Suicide Squad and gave it a good direction with The Suicide Squad, there are a few more films from the Dceu that deserved better. Here are four films that need a second chance in the Dcu.

One of the more interesting hero love lives belongs to Green Arrow. Oliver Queen is best known for dating and eventually marrying Black Canary Dinah Lance, but it cannot be overlooked that the billionaire has always had a complicated playboy lifestyle. These two have been together for so long that it may feel like they were always together, but that's far from the case.
There were times when Oliver found himself either pining for someone else when he wasn't with Black Canary. Honestly, there were times when he found himself lusting over other suitors even while he was with Dinah. Sometimes, the two would have a rocky relationship and sometimes, Ollie was the farthest from a faithful man. Green Arrow's faithfulness and his battles with fidelity were once a constant character flaw for him, but it also gave birth to numerous fascinating love interests who weren't Black Canary.

Superman is typically hailed as the Justice League's most durable hero due to his Kryptonian constitution, but he isn't the only one on the team whose body can withstand attacks. An overlooked Justice League icon has revealed the full extent of her own durability with a surprising power feat. Superman's Kryptonian invulnerability might just pale in comparison to the invulnerability of the Justice League's resident New God.
Birds of Prey #17 by Kelly Thompson, Sam Basri, Vicente Ficuentes, Adriano Lucas, and Clayton Cowles opens with the titular team attacking the Ninth Day cult to save Batgirl, who has been turned into a hulking brute. Big Barda attempts to talk sense into Batgirl, only for her former ally to inject her with the super-soldier serum that transformed her.
Big Barda appears to be compromised, but in a shocking turn, she isn't affected by Batgirl's needle injection.

Smallville originally planned to include a female-led Justice League episode in the series' final season. One of the writers even breaks down who would have made up the team. Smallville debuted in October 2001 on The WB and reimagined the Superman mythology for the 21st century. The series ran for ten seasons, transitioning from The WB to The CW, and featured many other DC characters, including Green Arrow, Aquaman, Cyborg, and many more. Two of the most iconic members of the Justice League are Green Arrow and Batman. The latter is one of its founding members, whereas the former is one of the League's most consistent supporting players, having earned his membership through amazing feats, like defeating DC's version of the Hulk. However, the weight that each member holds on the team, and in the DC Universe overall, is far from equal.
It's no secret that Green Arrow and Batman aren't viewed on equal footing - in-universe, by other characters, or even by DC Comics fans. There are some things that are going to set the Dcu apart from the MCU that fans are pretty familiar with. To begin with, the Marvel Cinematic Universe was dealing with B-tier characters when it was forming The Avengers, and so it was important to show the origin stories of Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America.

However, when it comes to characters like Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman, the DC Universe can be forgiven for forgoing their origin stories altogether, given that they are so well-known as characters, that retreading them would essentially be an extended exercise in maid and butler dialogue. This is something that James Gunn, too, believes, given that he has decided to not go ahead with Batman’s origin story as a film in the Dcu.

Starring Stephen Arnell as Green Arrow/Oliver Queen, Arrow ran for eight seasons on the CW and was responsible for its own TV universe, the Arrowverse. Although the show started off strong, Arrow eventually lost its way, partly because it was under the weight of being the uniting force of three other shows and countless heroes and villains.
Many fans view Arrow season three as the point at which the series started to lose its footing. However, while season three clearly wasn’t as good as its predecessors, it did have some redeeming qualities. When it comes to hand-to-hand fighting, Batman is one of the greatest in the DC Universe - but at least one person is better. There are very few characters who can stand up to his mastery over martial arts, but there are a few who are better than him, and DC is holding a grudge match between two martial artists who would absolutely destroy Batman if he tried to step into the ring.

Morena Baccarin played an important Marvel Universe character as Vanessa, most recently in Deadpool & Wolverine, but she also played a similar role in the DC Universe. Baccarin rose to prominence with her roles in Stargate Sg-1 and the cult-hit Firefly before moving on to acclaim in Homeland. Baccarin is perfect for the DC Universe, and she has done a number of superhero voice roles, including Black Canary in Justice League Unlimited and Cheetah in Batman: The Brave and the Bold. From there, Baccarin moved into an iconic DC role in 2015.
Many actors have been in projects from both Marvel and DC even in the same year. Performers from Christian Bale to Ryan Reynolds have taken on roles from each studio with varied degrees of success. However, few seem to be as committed to the DC Universe as Baccarin, who most recently lent her voice to Batman Unburied: Fallen City.

The WB's Birds of Prey show featuring Mark Hamill's Joker is an incredibly overlooked DC TV show that was ahead of its time despite its early-aughts cheesiness. DC has had dozens of movie and TV continuities, from the beloved 1960s Batman show and film to James Gunn's expansive Dcu. Some DC franchises have thrived longer than others. For instance, The CW's Arrowverse encompasses six TV shows and several adjacent series and movies, released from 2011 to 2023. Meanwhile, the Dceu dominated the big screen from 2013 to 2023, but its many behind-the-scenes issues led to an early reboot in 2024.
The massive success of Smallville in 2000 raised interest in the development of new DC TV shows. Some DC TV shows were scrapped before they were released, like the 2006 Aquaman show starring Justin Hartley and the 2011's Wonder Woman pilot starring Adrianne Palicki. Others, like Birds of Prey, managed to hit the small...

Morena Baccarin has had a remarkable history of portraying characters in DC projects, proving time and again that she fits seamlessly into the superhero genre, and would be ideal for James Hunn’s Dcu reboot. With seven distinct DC roles already under her belt, Morena Baccarin has demonstrated an impressive ability to bring depth, charm, and versatility to each character. These performances suggest she’s an ideal candidate for a prominent role in James Gunn's reimagined Dcu.
The Dcu timeline has long been a playground for Hollywood’s most talented actors, often casting seasoned performers to bring beloved comic book characters to life. As the franchise moves into a new era under James Gunn and Peter Safran, casting decisions will be crucial in shaping its tone and success. Enter Morena Baccarin, an actress with a proven track record not only in DC adaptations but also across sci-fi and action genres,...
