Denmark is not really known for genre fare, even if it counts one of the hardest working independent genre actors today, Kim Sonderholm, who also appears in The Ringmaster (aka Finale), among its number. In fact it’s been over 4 years since the last (unless you count the genre-esque output of Lars Von Trier), Kasper Juhl’s Monstrosity. Now Søren Juul Petersen’s film looks to put Denmark on the horror map once again, with a film that isn’t afraid to actually be horrific!

Set on the day that Denmark has reached the finals of the European Championships and everyone is glued to their TVs, Finale takes place, for the most part, at a small petrol station on the edge of town.

Tagline: "Entertainment Knows No Boundaries." The Ringmaster is a Danish film, from director Søren Juul Petersen. Set to release internationally, this title has seen several film festivals in 2019 - including: Motor City Nightmares (U.S.), Horrorant Film Festival (Greece) and Fantafestival (Italy). Now, Jinga Films has helped bring the film to: the U.K., Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, in 2020.  In the story, two girls are struggling on the nightshift with a terrifying show, streamed on the dark web. As well, this feature stars: Anne Bergfeld ("The Last Warrior"), Karin Michelsen, Kristoffer Fabricius, Mads Koudal and Kim Sønderholm. A preview of the film's latest set of releases is hosted here. The film's screenplay was developed from Steen Langstrup's novel. The official synopsis mentions the two girls held captive by a sadistic ringmaster (Damon Younger). Meanwhile, an offscreen audience will decide their next dark trial. The U.K. will release the film this November.

The FrightFest strand at the Glasgow Film Festival always throws in a few surprises and this year it is Finale. It is an adaptation of the award winning novel by Steen Langstrup novel and is brought to life by Danish director, Søren Juul Petersen.

The opening titles set the tone in its declaration to change the perception of Denmark. We also have before the film begins a little homage to the original Frankenstein. It is a nice nod to a true classic.

The initial setting for the film is a petrol station out in the middle of nowhere. And from here we meet Agnes Berger (Anne Bergfeld) and Belinda Anderson (Karin Michelsen). We follow the pair who are working the nightshift on the same night Denmark are in the final of a non-specified sport event. So no expectation of a lot, if any, customers until we encounter three strangers.

Breaking Glass Pictures has announced their acquisition of the North American rights to Matthew Montgomery's Devil's Path. The film will be released in theaters sometime in March, with a DVD and VOD release to follow. Icelandic filmmaker Logi Hilmarsson first popped up on our radar when his short film Þygdarafl (Gravity) played at the Tribeca Film Festival. It would be easy to describe dismiss Black’s Game as an Icelandic crime thriller, but that would be short changing this stylish film that zags every time you expect it to zig, making choices that make sense but are completely opposite to the choices made in other, similar crime films.

As a prime example, in the middle of the film, the crime gang performs a daring daylight bank robbery. When they count up their ill-gotten gains, the co-leader of the gang, Tóti (Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson) complains that they make more money in one day selling drugs with much less risk and without doing the dirty (criminal) work themselves. In most films, drugs are what topples a successful criminal empire; in Black’s Game,...

The Black’s Game (Svartur á Leik) teaser trailer looks like a solid crime movie. Hopefully it will be right up there with Animal Kingdom. That goal is achievable since its “executive produced by Nicholas Winding Refn and Chris Briggs, producer of the Hostel films”.
