A native of New York City's SoHo district, Malis attended Stuyvesant High School before graduating from Harvard University. While at Harvard, Malis was an editor for the Harvard Lampoon.

In his early career, Malis was an intern and writer for The Howard Stern Show, as well as a joke writer for Joan Rivers. He went on to write and produce reality, variety and award shows like Celebrity Undercover, Spy TV, Nick & Jessica's Family Christmas, The Spike TV Video Game Awards and VH1's Big in 04. He was also a writer/producer on Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Biggest Loser, Run's House, Mind of Mencia, Attack of the Show and Watch This with John Henson before becoming a writer on Comedy Central's Tosh.0 in its first season. Malis now acts as head writer and supervising producer on the hit show.

Malis' web presence has included his comedy blog, Malis In Wonderland, as well as the internet juggernaut Cute Things Falling Asleep (which features YouTube videos of babies and animals dozing off, complete with ratings of 1-5 for cuteness and sleepiness). For his creation of CTFA, Malis was a featured guest in early 2009 on CNN's The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, The Bonnie Hunt Show and The Today Show, as well as the subject of a Time Magazine article about the site.

A childhood friend of director Alexander Olch, Malis is thanked in the credits of Olch's 2008 documentary The Windmill Movie.

In addition to frequent background appearances on Tosh.0, Malis can be seen doing standup comedy around Los Angeles.
