Note to Mayors: Next Time, Maybe Try Economy Plus?
What is it with big-city mayors and ill-advised air travel decisions these days? Before Trump’s Justice Department abruptly dropped its charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams — who, completely coincidentally, is now super concerned about undocumented migrants in Manhattan — federal investigators were looking into illegal campaign contributions in the form of luxury travel perks, like $15,000 business class seats that Turkish Airlines was offering Adams for all of $50. Now, it’s Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’ turn in the hot seat — or, rather, the fully reclinable, 70-inch pitch, first class private suite. Bass’ political foes, pointing to published reports and flight tracking data, have been pushing a story on local reporters about how the mayor flew on a U.S. Air Force Gulfstream C-37B during her recent (and obviously ill-timed) trip to Africa to attend the inauguration of Ghana President...

A few days ago, the horror community was shaken when news broke about Saw XI possibly being canceled. While the information was vague, the unknown source sadly reported this with afair amount of certainty. Now, one of the film's writers has shared more details about the possible cancellation while also revealing plot details about the latest sequel in the Saw franchise. Apparently, John Kramer was going to help frustrated citizens fight whatever they needed to fight against.
Writing partners Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan have been involved with the Saw franchise since Saw IV, with the duo carving out a horror career that expanded to other franchises like Feast and The Collector. Returning as screenwriters for Saw XI, the pair seem like the perfect fit for the upcoming film, but as it turns out, they may not have been, as the project may have been canceled. As soon as Saw X, the tenth entry in the Saw franchise (you can read our review Here), was released in September of 2023, franchise producers were already talking about the potential of a Saw XI. The sequel was officially announced in December of ’23, and while it was originally aiming for a September 2024 release, it was quickly pushed back to September 26, 2025, with Saw X director Kevin Greutert set to return to the helm, working from a screenplay by Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, who previously wrote Saw parts 4 through 7 (with Thomas Fenton also getting a story credit on Saw IV). Yesterday, we heard that the film has been cancelled due to an apparently unresolvable disagreement between the producers – and now, writer Melton has confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that he hasn’t heard anything more about the project since the first draft of the script was turned in almost a year ago.

The future of Saw XI remains uncertain as the next installment in the long-running horror franchise has been stalled due to managerial disputes between Lionsgate and the film’s producers. Initially slated for a September 2024 release, the film’s delay has left fans speculating about its fate, with no clear resolution in sight.
Patrick Melton, one of the screenwriters for Saw XI, revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the film has made “zero progress” since he and writing partner Marcus Dunstan submitted a draft in the spring of 2024. “We haven’t heard anything since May,” Melton stated. “It’s stalled at a managerial level. It has nothing to do with the creative or anything else. There are higher-level things at play.”
While creative disputes have been a common obstacle in Hollywood productions, the delay of Saw XI appears to stem from internal conflicts between the franchise’s producers and Lionsgate executives.

Saw XI won’t be arriving in 2025, and there are doubts over the entire future of the movie (and franchise). More right here.
Turns out that if you want to finally defeat Jigsaw once and for all, you don’t need a deadly weapon, you just need a boardroom. After the success of the well-received Saw X, Lionsgate was quickly moving towards Saw XI. It was announced at speed, and the assumption was that it’d be turned around in a year, two at most.
However, screenwriters Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan wrote a draft of the screenplay that was sent in to the studio around this time last year. As Melton now tells The Hollywood Reporter, he’s heard nothing from the studio about Saw XI since May of last year. “It’s stalled at a managerial level. It has nothing to do with the creative or anything else.

Saw XI appears to be struggling to survive.
The Hollywood Reporter has learned “zero progress” has been made on the next installment since writing partners Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan turned in a draft back in spring of 2024.
“We haven’t heard anything since May,” says Saw XI screenwriter Melton, who has been involved with the franchise since 2007’s Saw IV. “It’s stalled at a managerial level. It has nothing to do with the creative or anything else. There’s higher-level things at play.”
In late December 2023, Lionsgate announced that franchise mainstay Kevin Greutert was attached to direct Saw XI for a September 2024 release, but the studio ultimately delayed it by a year to Sept. 26, 2025. Greutert helmed Saw X, which revitalized the franchise when it hit theaters in September 2023 and collected $112 million at the global box office. It is unclear if he is still involved in Saw XI, and...

Reggie Mantle is a major supporting character in Riverdale, having a role across all seven seasons of the show. Originally created back in 1942, Reggie served as the rival to Archie Andrews in the Archie Comics, and the two would essentially be frenemies for a large portion of their comic book history. When it comes to the live-action Riverdale adaption that began in 2017, the show leaned on that rivalry, with Reggie largely acting as an antagonistic force to Archie through the first season.
Reggie grew over the course of the series, becoming a much more positive character throughout Riverdale's seven seasons. While most of the characters in Riverdale change and grow in a number of ways, Reggie Mantle did so in a much different fashion. One of the biggest changes to Reggie came after season 1, and forever changed the character for the rest of the series.

The first season of Netflix anthology series Beef was a masterful study in microaggression and escalation, with Steven Yeun and Ali Wong going to increasingly extreme lengths to one up each other after a road rage incident. But while the upcoming second season of creator Lee Sung Jin's show promises more conflict and cause-and-effect shenanigans, on one thing we all can agree: the cast for Season 2 is seriously stacked. Back in October we learned that Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Charles Melton, Cailee Spaeny, and Youn Yuh-jung would lead the ensemble this time out — and now we're getting word that Parasite star Song Kang-ho is aboard for some Beef too.
Per Deadline's reporting, the regular Bong Joon Ho collaborator is the latest addition to Beef Season 2's cast, though his specific role in the show remains under wraps at this point. What we do know however is that this inbound...

Getting a movie made in Hollywood is hard enough, but trying to make an independent feature is becoming all but impossible, even for the likes of proven entity Todd Solondz. After a career consisting of off-beat, but beloved films like “Welcome to the Dollhouse,” “Happiness,” and “Wiener-Dog,” Solondz is now struggling to get financing for his latest effort, “Love Child,” despite the commitments of Elizabeth Olsen and Charles Melton who signed on to star back in February of this year. Speaking in a recent interview with Vulture, Olsen admitted that getting the film made is proving more challenging than she initially thought.
“I’m not a producer on it, but I’ve never hustled more for a movie that’s having a hard time getting made,” Olsen said. “There’s so many things I could say about that in private. It really comes down to having really responsible budgets. But...

When a television show is being developed, casting can make or break a show. Once a character is cast, they're rarely recast. It takes a lot of work and effort to find the right person for a role to fit the vision of the creators. Fans quickly fall in love and have favorites, especially when the character is well-written and well-acted.
When recasting occurs, it disrupts the audience's viewing and makes suspension of disbelief harder to accept. Sometimes it's brought on by on-set difficulties. Other times, a cast member wanted to pursue other career opportunities. Just as much as casting can make or break a show, recasting a character can do the same.
Charles Melton Replaced Ross Butler in Riverdale Reggie Mantle
Reggie Mantle is a character in Riverdale originally played by Ross Butler. Reggie is the captain of the Riverdale Bulldogs and emulates all the characteristics of a stereotypical jock.

Back in September of 2019, we reported that The Collected – the third film in the franchise that began with 2009’s The Collector (watch it Here) and continued with 2012’s The Collection (watch that Here) – had started filming in Atlanta. Genre legend Tom Atkins had a role in the film, and he told us that the first thing shot on The Collected was the twelve-page sequence that makes up the ending. Nearly five years later, that’s still all that has been shot for The Collected. Writer/director Marcus Dunstan and co-writer Patrick Melton previously revealed that production was shut down on The Collected after just eight days of filming… but it looks like this project is finally coming back together and moving forward again!
After the production shutdown, Dunstan and Melton stopped hearing from anyone involved behind the scenes. Attempts to get in contact with the producer who held the rights went unanswered.

Carey Mulligan and Oscar Isaac may lead season 2 of Beef, a reunion from their work in Drive in 2011. The Season 2 script for Beef is done, production is likely this year. The first season received13 Emmy nominations, and won 8. Beef creators consider making the series an anthology with new beefs and characters each season.
Carey Mulligan and Oscar Isaac are in negotiations to lead the second season of Netflix's Emmy Award-winning Beef, according to a new report from Deadline. This would mark a reunion for the two actors, as they previously co-starred in 2011's critically acclaimed Drive as an estranged couple. The sophomore season of Beef, which has yet to be confirmed, would revolve around two feuding couples; Mulligan and Isaac would play one, while Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) and Charles Melton (May December) would portray the other.

The absence of Charles Melton's Rafe in Bad Boys: Ride or Die has gone largely unnoticed due to a stacked cast. Rafe may have been left out of the sequel due to scheduling conflicts, though Melton has yet to comment on his absence. Despite Rafe's absence, the success of Ride or Die leaves room for a potential return in a future installment.
Warning: Major spoilers below for Bad Boys: Ride or Die!Even though nobody appears to have noticed, there is a key supporting player missing from Bad Boys: Ride or Die. Not every movie series can take an almost 20-year break and come back strong, but the Bad Boys movie franchise is no ordinary series. As soon as Saw X, the tenth entry in the Saw franchise (you can read our review Here), was released last September, franchise producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules were already talking about the potential of a Saw XI. The official announcement came in December, along with a release date: September 27th… but they’ve decided to take a little extra time with this one, so a couple months ago it was announced that Saw XI won’t be reaching theatres until September 26, 2025. The script is still in the works, though, and now we know the name of at least one person behind it: Marcus Dunstan, who says this is going to be an “angry” film.

Apologies for the delay in what was supposed to be the Almost There series' glorious return. Since the Oscars are less than one week away, let's see if I can get things back on schedule, starting with a look at one of the season's most disappointing "snubs." When May December premiered in Cannes, many singled out Charles Melton's performance, starting a narrative with great potential. Here was a Riverdale heartthrob making his way into the big leagues, proving he could go toe to toe with such awards-winning stars as Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore.

It looks like the popular drama series Beef is heading down the anthology route as a brand-new (and very impressive) cast comes together for its second season.
Netflix’s Beef, created by Lee Sung Jin, was one of last year’s breakout hits on the streaming platform. The ten episode drama featured Stephen Yeun and Ali Wong as its twin leads told a self-contained tale of two ordinary people that let an everyday moment of frustration boil up into something much darker and destructive.
Sung Jin is now putting together the casting for season two of the show, which looks like it will go down the anthology route and tell an entirely different story.
Given the critical acclaim that the first season was able to build up, it looks like Sung Jin is going to be able to call on some pretty prestigious names too: according to Deadline, the core...

Charles Melton’s awards campaign for his breakout role in “May December” started in May when the Todd Haynes drama co-starring Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman premiered at Cannes.
Since then, Melton has gone on to receive a slew of award nominations and wins. He picked up Golden Globe and Independent Spirit Award noms and won a Gotham for outstanding supporting performance.
Fans of the film, however, were disappointed when Melton didn’t receive an Oscar nomination, and the movie only earned one for original screenplay.
But, I’m glad to report that Melton is doing just fine. “I’m happy,” Melton told me Wednesday night at Cultured’s art and film issue dinner (Melton and Lakeith Stanfield appear on separate covers of the magazine). “I just got back from Hawaii. With Civil War set for release this spring, Alex Garland is to direct again, this time an ‘untitled war movie’. More here.
In the summer of 2022, when he was promoting his pretty unforgettable horror Men, Alex Garland was giving the impression of a man done with directing movies. He’s credited with directing Ex Machina and Annihilation and was reported to have finished up 2012’s Dredd. Then, following Men, he launched straight into making Civil War, which is due for release in April.
However, if he was looking to step away from the director’s chair, it sounds as if the plan is at the very least on hold: according to Deadline, he’s just signed up to another project.
It’s going by the codename ‘Untitled War Movie’, and from that, I’m going to hazard a guess that it’s a war film, for which these is not yet a name.

Kathryn Newton channeled her inner “Lisa Frankenstein” for a special screening of the film at the Hollywood Athletic Club, donning a dramatic black corseted Vera Wang gown with exaggerated tulle hips.
“There was no other dress option. I have a little heart I took from my last boyfriend,” Newton told Variety on the black carpet, pointing to her blood-red heart-shaped choker and giggling, “Just kidding – I don’t have a boyfriend!”
In the film from Zelda Williams, Newton’s Lisa and a re-animated corpse dubbed “The Creature” (Cole Sprouse) embark on a murderous journey to make him whole by claiming some of his missing body parts from the living. Even though Sprouse doesn’t speak a single word in Diablo Cody’s campy script, communicating only through grunts, Newton says they had no trouble selling their chemistry.
“Have you looked at Cole Sprouse? It’s very easy to have chemistry.

In a post-Barbie universe, it’s a strange feeling to have pity for extremely wealthy, famous, and attractive heterosexual men. Yet this has been the predominant sentiment following actor Charles Melton’s Oscar snub for his turn as a traumatized sexual assault survivor in May December.

Short of "Oppenheimer," there's no film released in 2023 that I enjoyed more than Todd Haynes' "May December" — so of course it's been nearly shut out by the Academy for the 96th Oscars.
It's not a total wash, since "May December" earned a nomination for Original Screenplay. Yet as deserving as Samy Burch's writing is of that honor, the nomination feels like an insufficient offer of consolation. "May December" is not named among the Best Picture nominees, nor is Todd Haynes nominated for Best Director. Marcelo Zavros' score, reworked from Michael Legrand's in "The Go-Between," was shut out even as it accentuates the film's melodrama and dark comic timing.
Most galling is its total absence from the acting categories, even though the movie lives and dies on its three central performances: Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman, and Charles Melton.

It wouldn’t be the Academy Award nominations without a few shockers mixed in, and this year was no exception. While some big names like Margot Robbie and Leonardo DiCaprio missed out on acting nominations, there were also some unexpected inclusions along the way.
Here, Variety breaks down the biggest snubs and surprises of the 2024 Oscar nominations.
Snub: Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig, “Barbie”
The powerhouse duo responsible for the biggest movie of the year found love in other categories —Robbie is included in the film’s best picture nomination as a producer and Gerwig saw her screenplay (with co-writer Noah Baumbach) recognized. But Robbie ultimately missed on the competitive best actress lineup while Gerwig was shut out of director.
Surprise: America Ferrera, “Barbie”
Though its leading lady and director didn’t land nominations, “Barbie” co-star Ferrera was able to score a supporting actress nod for her role in the megahit,...
