The final moments of Sex Education saw the show’s core characters rally behind one of their own and begin their paths into the next chapter of their lives.

In the series finale of the Netflix series, the students at Cavendish Sixth Form College discover their classmate Cal (Dua Saleh) has gone missing, and they join forces to find their friend and bring them home safely. When Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) and Jackson (Kedar Williams-Stirling) find Cal, they realize they’ve been neglecting their friend who has been struggling with body dysmorphia amid their transition because they can’t afford top surgery.

Instead of raising money for the soup kitchen run by Eric’s church, which does not want money from LGBTQ students, the school decides to donate the money from the fundraiser to Cal so they can complete their transition.

Ever since its 2018 debut, Netflix’s raunchy teen comedy was first, foremost, and unflinchingly about friendship, love, and self-discovery. Otis’ journey (Asa Butterfield) in Season 1 is not sexual exploration with partners, but of unblocking his own difficulty with masturbation and finding his calling as the school’s sex therapist. Everything that came after (pun intended) — for all the characters, including the adults — followed suit.

The show spotlighted queer love from the start, with the out and proud Eric (Ncuti Gatwa), Otis’ best friend. Sex Education season 4 continues the show's legacy of inclusivity and tackles a wide range of social and sexual issues with its bold, in-your-face approach. The new setting at Cavendish Sixth Form College allows the show to explore the flaws and challenges of radical inclusivity while emphasizing the importance of kindness and empathy. The characters in Sex Education season 4 experience hardships and trauma, but find solace in the support and acceptance of others, showcasing the healing power of kindness and community.

In this period of hyper-awareness of the precarity of streaming programming, it was a relief to learn that Sex Education, which I consider among the best of Netflix's original shows, got the chance to end on its own terms.

We’ve come a long way since the start of “Sex Education,” when we were all rooting for (or at least commiserating with) Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield), the Netflix dramedy’s awkward, anxious and slightly dysfunctional hero. Four years later, we’re saying goodbye to the show’s high school student-turned-amateur sex therapist and his brilliant sex therapist mother, Dr. Jean Milburn (played by the incomparable Gillian Anderson), along with a lengthy cast of characters we’ve all grown to love.

In this final season, we get to see each character develop into the people we’ve wanted them to become. And in a sense, it seems like some end up outshining Otis, making it feel like perhaps he was never really the hero of this story, but rather an entry point into the interwoven lives of the diverse residents of the fictional town of Moordale.

But first, some bad...

Fluent in therapy-speak and determined to champion inclusivity, the teen characters from Netflix’s Sex Education might, in another series, be the butt of the joke. But the show’s charm has always been its refreshingly unironic celebration of Gen-z’s earnestness. In an unfortunate development, however, the fourth (and final) season tips into cynicism.

Following the closure of Moordale, the ’80s-inspired secondary school where the first three seasons of Sex Education were set, the new season takes place at the student-led Cavendish College, which is an even bigger haven of progressiveness, as evinced by its daily meditation sessions and “gossip free” policy. This is something of a shock for the former Moordale students, particularly Otis (Asa Butterfield), who discovers to his amazement that Cavendish already has its own student sex therapist, O (Thaddea Graham).

Sex Education season 4 emphasizes transgender representation, adding new characters Abbi and Roman, portrayed by trans actors Anthony Lexa and Felix Mufti. Creator Laurie Nunn felt a responsibility to authentically portray the transgender characters and include their stories, given the current global climate surrounding transgender rights. Sex Education has always been inclusive, showcasing taboo topics like teenage masturbation and portraying a wide range of identities and experiences, including queer relationships, vaginismus, and asexuality.

In an interview with Netflix’s Tudum, series creator Laurie Nunn revealed the fourth season jumps forward a few months after the events of the season three finale.

“Maeve is in America, which is where we left her on the bus, going off to study. The Moordale Secondary students are starting at a new school called Cavendish College, which is very different from Moordale. It’s very progressive and woke, and it makes the Moordale students feel like they’re little fish in a big pond,” explained Nunn.

The creator, lead writer and executive producer of Netflix’s raunchy comedy series Sex Education Laurie Nunn has announced that the show will be coming to an end with its upcoming season which will be premiering this September. The series will end with Season 4, which is set for September 21, the streamer announced on Wednesday.

In a teaser for the new season, which was also released on Wednesday, Asa Butterfield’s Otis Milburn doesn’t appear to be any more eloquent with his words than he was when he began his journey as a sex therapist at Moordale Secondary.

“Thinking about sex comes very naturally, because I learned everything I know about sex from my mom,” he tells a crowd of college students, much to their horror.

Creator, writer and executive producer Laurie Nunn broke the news in a letter to fans, and said that ending the Asa Butterfield-led series was “not an easy decision.”

Sex Education deals with some difficult topics, and season 4 has the chance to revisit one of its most powerful storylines. Sex Education mainly focuses on awkward high-schooler-slash-sex-therapist Otis (Asa Butterfield) and the many sexual problems his school peers face. Alongside Maeve (Emma Mackey), Otis runs an underground sex clinic that provides funny and heartfelt moments as the other students deal with their personal issues. Sex Education has managed to expand this to deal with more serious issues such as gender, race, mental health, and wealth divides. Season 2 in particular expanded on these issues and showed popular jock, Jackson (Kedar Williams-Sterling) struggling with mental health and self-harm.

Season 3 of Sex Education put more focus on Otis and Maeve’s relationship and has ended with Maeve leaving for America. With numerous Sex Education cast members leaving due to their expanding careers, it is uncertain how long the Netflix show will continue.

The hit Netflix series lost many stars ahead of production on the fourth season.

But, with production completed, more cast members are announcing they won't be back for a potential fifth season.

Emma Mackey revealed to RadioTimes Sunday after winning the BAFTA Award for Rising Star that her time on the series was over.

"Season 5? I've just finished the fourth one last week!" Mackey explained, adding the following:

"No, I don't think I'll be in season 5. I've said goodbye to Maeve."

The actress previously teased that she wouldn't be as prominent in the fourth season.

"It feels very familiar! And it's a bit more sporadic because we have more characters. So there's… I'm not in it as consistently," Mackey said.

"But we're in the middle of filming now, and I'm excited to be back," she added at the time.

Joining him are six new series regulars, who are: Thaddea Graham, Marie Reuther, Felix Mufti, Anthony Lexa, Alexandra James, and Imani Yahshua. Filming on the new season is currently underway, reports Variety.
