New Netflix Thriller About Real-Life Murder Becomes Streamer's #1 Movie Worldwide
Image
A new Netflix thriller inspired by a real murder has become a major hit. Netflix is a major subscription streaming service that has a library of licensed movie and television titles that includes major hits like Suits, but is perhaps best known for its original movies and television shows. Titles that have become global smash successes include the South Korean survival thriller series Squid Game, the Taron Egerton Tsa thriller movie Carry-On, the Addams Family reimagining Wednesday, and the 1980s-set sci-fi fantasy show Stranger Things.

One particularly robust genre for Netflix across all mediums is true crime. They have found success with a number of true crime documentaries and docuseries including Tiger King and Don't F**k with Cats. However, they have also had hit movies and TV shows that are dramatizations of true crime stories featuring actors portraying the real life figures, including the scam series Inventing Anna (which...

Chloë Sevigny on Kitty Menendez and ‘Monsters’ fascination: ‘People are endlessly curious about those who have privilege and abuse it’
Image
"People are endlessly occupied, enthralled, and curious about people who have privilege and abuse it," Chloë Sevigny tells Gold Derby about the fascination behind Netflix's Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.

Sevigny plays Kitty Menendez, who was gunned down in a double parricide alongside her husband, José Menendez (Javier Bardem), by their sons Lyle (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) and Erik (Cooper Koch) on Aug. 20, 1989. The brothers claimed years of sexual and emotional abuse at the hands of their parents before being convicted of their murders in 1996 and sentenced to life in prison.

"How did this unfurl? How did this happen to them? Did it really happen to them? It's kind of a mystery," Sevigny says, speaking about viewers' fascination with the story. The limited series became Netflix's most-watched program since Bridgerton in 2024. "People can take a stance. People get excited when they can have an opinion in that way.

‘Monsters’ Star Cooper Koch Became Erik Menendez’s Biggest Defender
Image
Cooper Koch believes he was fated to play Erik Menendez — even if it took almost a decade for it to happen. Years before the latest installment in Netflix’s “Monster” anthology series, the actor had unsuccessfully auditioned for the same role in two previous television retellings: NBC’s “Law & Order: True Crime” and Lifetime’s “Menendez: Blood Brothers,” both released in 2017. He felt compassion for Erik and his brother, Lyle, so when he heard about “Monsters,” he was determined to land the part.

“I was getting another chance to be a part of telling their story,” Koch said. “Having it come back around, it was just kismet. I was like, ‘Ok, this is my time to get this job.’”

“Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” dramatizes the infamous 1989 parricides of José and Kitty Menendez (Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny) and the media circus surrounding the murder trials of Lyle and Erik,...

‘Monsters’ Star Nicholas Alexander Chavez Took ‘Daily Walks’ to Menendez House, Forming ‘Spiritual Connection’
Image
Nicholas Alexander Chavez was committed to meticulously researching his role as Lyle Menendez, one-half of the real-life brothers who brutally murdered their parents in 1989, for his role in Ryan Murphy’s “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.” He took his part so seriously, in fact, that he said he felt “some of spiritual connection” with the Beverly Hills mansion where the crime occurred.

While the production team used three different L.A.-area locations to cobble together its Menendez home, the real life site is very much intact on North Elm Drive in Beverly Hills. Chavez said he lives “not quite a stone’s throw but pretty close” to the house, and took daily walks to it while preparing for the production.

“Maybe you’ve had a similar experience to this, where you just know that spaces carry energy with them,” Chavez said during a recent interview with The Los Angeles Times.

Every General Hospital 2025 Nurses Ball Performance Ranked
Image
General Hospital’s Nurses Ball may have been missing a few things this year — like some beloved characters and a half-naked Lucy — but what it had plenty of was memorable performances! Here is every 2025 Nurses Ball performance, ranked.

Honorable Mention: The Tango That Wasn’t

Let’s start off with an honorable mention: Anna (Finola Hughes) and Chase’s (Josh Swickard) Tango… that didn’t happen. The Pcpd pair were supposed to dance, accompanied by Gio (Giovanni Mazza), but the real entertainment happened when Gio’s violin came to an abrupt stop and he made the big reveal that Brook Lynn (Amanda Setton) and Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) are his parents.

7. Opening Act ft. Gh Nurses + Isaiah

There may be no opening act that could top the famous “Welcome to the Nurses Ball,” so watching beloved nurses like Amy (Risa Dorken), Deanna (Dioni Michelle Collins), and Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) sing fell a bit short.

‘Monsters’ stars on breaking furniture and bringing the Menendez case back into the spotlight
Image
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story stars Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez had no idea just how much of an impact the show would have on pop culture — and in the real world — when they took on the roles of the convicted killers.

"The fact that this show reframed or repositioned a 30-year-old case in a way that made people rethink how they thought about it, that's just, it's so, so special," Chavez told Gold Derby at an FYC event for the series at West Hollywood’s Pacific Design Center.

The second season of Ryan Murphy’s Monsters anthology dominated the conversation both online and offline when it premiered on Netflix last fall, introducing a new generation to the Menendez brothers’ brutal 1989 killing of their parents in their Beverly Hills home. The series also reignited interest in the pair’s court case — culminating in the brothers’ May 13 resentencing...

Menendez Brothers’ Parole Hearing Delayed by Two Months
Image
Erik and Lyle Menendez are going to have to wait a little longer for the decision on their potential release from prison.

The infamous brothers — who have been incarcerated for 30 years for the 1989 murders of their parents, José and Kitty Menendez, at their Beverly Hills home — were resentenced earlier this month to 50 years to life, making them eligible for parole. Despite LA County District Attorney Nathan Hochman’s doubts, Judge Michael Jesic determined Erik and Lyle did not pose “an unreasonable risk” if they were to be released from prison.

While their next hearing was initially scheduled for June 13, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation announced that the brothers’ parole hearing dates have been pushed back to Aug. 21 and 22.

Lyle addressed the hearing postponement on Facebook, noting that “it’s a good thing” as it gives their attorneys more time to prepare. “Given the fact that first time parole...

Are the Young Men Ok? On Some of the Season’s Best Shows, Not at All
Image
During this particular TV season, it’s easy to understand why parents, especially those of young men, have experienced all manner of visceral reactions to both ripped-from-the-headlines and smaller-scale storylines.

Describing the first scene of “Adolescence” to IndieWire’s Toolkit podcast, in which the audience enters the limited series through the eyes of the detectives raiding a family’s home, creator/star Stephen Graham said, “I wanted to grab the audience by the scruff of the neck and that camera moving up through that house and going into a boy’s bedroom and have police point guns at ’em.”

Naturally, it’s disorienting to hear that a 13-year-old boy is being arrested for murder, but by the third episode in the lauded series, viewers see a switch flip. Suddenly, they have an understanding of the environment the child was raised in — and what information was being fed to him inside...

FX's Grotesquerie begins with Niecy Nash-Betts' Det. ‘I felt my blood boil’: Nicholas Alexander Chavez on playing Lyle Menendez in ‘Monsters’
Image
“I think when I look back on this, I'll just remember it as being one of the most special times in my entire life,” Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story star Nicholas Alexander Chavez tells Gold Derby (watch the video interview above).

“Every actor dreams of having the opportunity to do a project like this that allows you to immerse yourself in a world like the '80s, to work with challenging actors like Cooper Koch, Javier Bardem, and Chloë Sevigny. Just the fact that I had this opportunity, I just feel so grateful.”

Chavez reveals he had jitters — and preconceived notions about his costars — his first day on set. When he learned he’d be working with Javier Bardem, he immediately thought of Bardem’s terrifying performance in No Country for Old Men. “I'm going into this expecting the scariest person of all time,” he admits. Was Trina’s Latest Accessory A Sprina Callback On General Hospital?
Image
Despite Trina moving on with Kai, General Hospital seems to be throwing a lot of Sprina callbacks at the supercouple’s loyal fans.

Two Turtle Doves

The most memorable part of Trina (Tabyana Ali) and Spencer’s (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) relationship was when he gave her a box of two turtle doves, a symbol of a matching pair. He kept one, and she kept the other.

Tragically, when Spencer was presumed dead after falling overboard with Esme (Avery Kristen Pohl), Spencer’s dove washed ashore, while Trina kept hers close as she grieved her boyfriend. But despite Spencer being gone, he’s far from forgotten by Trina.

Couple Callback

Recently on Gh, Sprina fans found themselves having deja vu when Trina fell off a step stool in the gallery, straight into Kai’s (Jens Austin Astrup) arms. The moment was almost identical to the scene when Trina fell off a...

Freddie Prinze Jr. Is a Silver Fox in New ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Reboot Image
Image
The maniacal fisherman may be out for blood in Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, but Freddie Prinze Jr. is out here to slay. Included in the lineup of first-look images for this summer at the cinema, USA Today snatched a new look at the actor’s return to the slasher franchise, which sees him reprise a role from nearly three decades ago. And — spoiler alert — he’s just as much of a babe as ever, quite like his co-star, Jennifer Love Hewitt, who will also go face-to-face with the brutal killer once again in Robinson’s upcoming flick.

The image in question features Prinze Jr.’s Ray Bronson, standing alongside newcomers Chase Sui Wonders (Bodies Bodies Bodies), Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks), and Sarah Pidgeon (The Wilds), each of whom find themselves in deep, dark, and (to them) uncharted waters in the legacy sequel. The...

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Reboot Director ‘Pitched Crazy Sh*t’ to Original Star Sarah Michelle Gellar to Convince Her to Return
Image
No, Sarah Michelle Gellar isn’t returning this summer for the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” reboot. Why? Because her iconic character Helen Shivers is “the most dead a person could be.” To be fair, she did have the most memorable kill scene in the 1997 original film…

But that didn’t stop “I Know What You Did Last Summer” reboot director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson from gently “harassing” Gellar to reconsider returning to the franchise. Robinson previously worked with Gellar on the 2022 Netflix film “Do Revenge,” and the duo have remained close since.

Robinson told Entertainment Weekly that, while original franchise stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are returning for the horror sequel, Gellar had to turn down reprising her role. “I tried, Ok? Robinson is directing the film from a screenplay by Leah McKendrick (M.F.A.), which has received some rewrites from Robinson and journalist Sam Lansky. McKendrick told Collider a while back that the new sequel will reckon with “some...

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Director ‘Tried Relentlessly’ to Convince Sarah Michelle Gellar to Return for Sequel Despite Her Character’s Death: I Had to ‘Pitch Some Crazy S—’
Image
Despite her best efforts, writer-director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson couldn’t bring Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Helen Shivers back to life for the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” reboot.

In a recent conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Robinson said she “tried relentlessly” to fit Gellar into the new “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” Her efforts were for naught, however, because Robinson could not maneuver around the fact that Helen Shivers “is dead.”

“I tried, okay? I harassed her! But she is dead,” Robinson said. “I tried to pitch some crazy shit too. I was like, ‘What if it’s like you weren’t dead and you’re actually alive, but in hiding?’ And Sarah’s like, ‘I was on ice. I was the most dead a person could be. You can see my frozen body.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, but what if?’ And she said, ‘I am dead.

Ari Graynor to submit as Lead Actress for ‘Monsters: The Lyle & Erik Menendez Story’ (exclusive)
Image
Leslie Abramson — or at least her TV surrogate — is stepping into the spotlight.

Ari Graynor, who plays the defense attorney in Netflix's Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, will be submitting as Lead Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie for the upcoming Emmy Awards, Gold Derby has learned exclusively.

Graynor stars opposite Javier Bardem, Chloë Sevigny, Cooper Koch, and Nicholas Alexander Chavez, in the true-crime anthology series created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, chronicling the murders of José and Kitty Menendez at the hands of their sons, Lyle (Chavez) and Erik (Koch).

Like many series this season, Monsters experimented with single-take episodes to tremendous success — critics called it "a standout — earning Graynor raves as well. In Episode 5, titled "The Hurt Man," she's seen only from the back as she talks to Erik about the abuse he endured at the hands of his parents.

"It was...

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Writer-Director Pitched “Some Crazy S—” To Try To Get Sarah Michelle Gellar To Return
Image
Although Jennifer Kaytin Robinson‘s I Know What You Did Last Summer brings back some familiar faces, don’t expect to see any reigning Croaker Queens.

The writer-director of the sequel, which premieres July 18 in theaters, recently admitted that she “tried relentlessly” to get her pal Sarah Michelle Gellar to reprise her role as the doomed Helen Shivers from the 1997 slasher pic, but “she’s dead.”

“I tried, okay? I harassed her! But she is dead,” Robinson told Entertainment Weekly. “I tried to pitch some crazy s— too. I was like, ‘What if it’s like you weren’t dead and you’re actually alive, but in hiding?’ And Sarah’s like, ‘I was on ice. I was the most dead a person could be. The State of the Race

Can only one episode win a performer an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie? That’s one of the main questions for the category this year, and one could argue both sides. With only four episodes, “Adolescence” is running the Limited Series conversation much in the same way fellow British Netflix series “Baby Reindeer” did last year.

‘Adolescence’ now predicted to receive 5 acting Emmy nominations: Odds update
Image
Much of the Emmy conversation around Adolescence's acting chances has centered around Stephen Graham and Owen Cooper, as they play the two key characters in the harrowing project. However, Gold Derby is now predicting that five total performers will receive nominations this year.

The four-episode crime drama is created and written by Graham and Jack Thorne, and stars Graham as Eddie Miller, the father of Cooper's 13-year-old Jamie Miller, who is arrested for allegedly stabbing a classmate to death. Each episode is directed by Philip Barantini and filmed in a single take as viewers learn more about Jamie's crime from the viewpoints of the police, his psychiatrist, and his family.

Also expected to nab Emmy nominations for the cast are Ashley Walters as Detective Inspector Luke Bascombe, Erin Doherty as child psychologist Briony Ariston, and Christine Tremarco as Jamie's mother and Eddie's wife, Manda Miller. Cooper and Doherty are...

The Trailer & Spoilers

The trailer from Sony Pictures arrived on YouTube on April 22. You will want to put the kids to bed early and probably lock your door, as there’s plenty of blood and gore in the teaser. ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Trailer: Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr. Return for a Killer Sequel
Image
Sony dropped the first “I Know What You Did Last Summer” trailer on Tuesday, offering a first look at the horror sequel to the 1997 franchise starter. Co-written and directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the filmmaker behind 2022’s Netflix movie “Do Revenge,” this continuation of the horror series focuses on a new group of teens who are stalked by a hooded killer in the wake of a terrible accident.

Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are back, reprising their roles from the original film and its Bahamas-set 1998 sequel “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.” This time around, they’re the seasoned veterans that the group of teens seek out when they start getting picked off one by one.

The original “I Know What You Did Last Summer” came in the wake of the success of the “Scream” franchise, and that meta horror series’ creator Kevin Williamson wrote “Summer” as well.
