"People are endlessly occupied, enthralled, and curious about people who have privilege and abuse it," Chloë Sevigny tells Gold Derby about the fascination behind Netflix's Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.

Sevigny plays Kitty Menendez, who was gunned down in a double parricide alongside her husband, José Menendez (Javier Bardem), by their sons Lyle (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) and Erik (Cooper Koch) on Aug. 20, 1989. The brothers claimed years of sexual and emotional abuse at the hands of their parents before being convicted of their murders in 1996 and sentenced to life in prison.

"How did this unfurl? How did this happen to them? Did it really happen to them? It's kind of a mystery," Sevigny says, speaking about viewers' fascination with the story. The limited series became Netflix's most-watched program since Bridgerton in 2024. "People can take a stance. People get excited when they can have an opinion in that way.

Cooper Koch believes he was fated to play Erik Menendez — even if it took almost a decade for it to happen. Years before the latest installment in Netflix’s “Monster” anthology series, the actor had unsuccessfully auditioned for the same role in two previous television retellings: NBC’s “Law & Order: True Crime” and Lifetime’s “Menendez: Blood Brothers,” both released in 2017. He felt compassion for Erik and his brother, Lyle, so when he heard about “Monsters,” he was determined to land the part.

“I was getting another chance to be a part of telling their story,” Koch said. “Having it come back around, it was just kismet. I was like, ‘Ok, this is my time to get this job.’”

Nicholas Alexander Chavez was committed to meticulously researching his role as Lyle Menendez, one-half of the real-life brothers who brutally murdered their parents in 1989, for his role in Ryan Murphy’s “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.” He took his part so seriously, in fact, that he said he felt “some of spiritual connection” with the Beverly Hills mansion where the crime occurred.

While the production team used three different L.A.-area locations to cobble together its Menendez home, the real life site is very much intact on North Elm Drive in Beverly Hills. Chavez said he lives “not quite a stone’s throw but pretty close” to the house, and took daily walks to it while preparing for the production.

“Maybe you’ve had a similar experience to this, where you just know that spaces carry energy with them,” Chavez said during a recent interview with The Los Angeles Times.

Almost 30 years after the original horror movie, the upcoming legacy sequel is set to feature the return of both Jennifer Love Hewitt as Julie James and Freddie Prinze Jr. as Ray Bronson, this time as allies to a new group of friends who become the targets of the Fisherman after a gruesome incident in their past. Chavez will play Kilroy at the Williamstown Theatre Festival this summer, in Massachusetts’ Berkshire Mountains. He’s set to star opposite Pamela Anderson, who’s playing Marguerite, as they dive into a revival of ‘Camino Real’.

Written by playwright Tennessee Williams, the production will be directed by Dustin Wills, and Whitney Peak, star of Hocus Pocus 2, rounds out the cast, playing Esmerelda.

Despite her best efforts, writer-director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson couldn’t bring Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Helen Shivers back to life for the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” reboot.

In a recent conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Robinson said she “tried relentlessly” to fit Gellar into the new “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” Her efforts were for naught, however, because Robinson could not maneuver around the fact that Helen Shivers “is dead.”

“I tried, okay? I harassed her! But she is dead,” Robinson said. “I tried to pitch some crazy shit too. I was like, ‘What if it’s like you weren’t dead and you’re actually alive, but in hiding?’ And Sarah’s like, ‘I was on ice. I was the most dead a person could be. You can see my frozen body.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, but what if?’ And she said, ‘I am dead.

Can only one episode win a performer an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie? That’s one of the main questions for the category this year, and one could argue both sides. With only four episodes, “Adolescence” is running the Limited Series conversation much in the same way fellow British Netflix series “Baby Reindeer” did last year.

Much of the Emmy conversation around Adolescence's acting chances has centered around Stephen Graham and Owen Cooper, as they play the two key characters in the harrowing project. However, Gold Derby is now predicting that five total performers will receive nominations this year.
