20 years after the original film, a musical movie adaptation of Mean Girls was released, providing a new twist to the 2004 classic and making some ending changes. Mean Girls was first adapted into a popular musical for the Broadway stage in 2017. This has translated into positive reviews for the Mean Girls musical film due to the fun musical numbers, popular source material, and strong performances. Though some changes were made between all three versions of Mean Girls, it remains a faithful adaptation full of familiar jokes that are still laugh-out-loud funny two decades later.
Mean Girls was originally meant to be released solely for streaming on Paramount+ but was given a theatrical release. Mean Girls can be streamed on the service, and The Mean Girls soundtrack is available on all major music streaming platforms. Jenna Fischer put her acting skills to the test on the set of 2024’s Mean Girls. The actress revealed this week she filmed the movie with a broken shoulder.
“I shot for one day on Mean Girls, and then I didn’t have to shoot for a month,” Fischer told People. “And in that month I went on a ski trip and I fell on a sidewalk and I broke my shoulder. So I had to shoot the rest of the movie with a very newly broken shoulder.”
Fischer played Ms. Heron, the daughter of protagonist Cady (Angourie Rice) in the musical movie. After she returned with her arm in a sling, the actress said the crew got creative in accommodating the injury.

Get in losers, the Damians are talking. Full disclosure: This. Yeah, it’s a strange and so-flattering thing to be linked to such an indelible character as Mean Girls‘ Damian. He’s an icon, he’s a scene stealer and he’s joyful proof that you’re never too gay to function. He’s also heavily influenced by my brother Jim (especially the stage version originated by the flawless Grey Henson on Broadway): We’re both huge homos who grew up with Tina Fey doing summer theater in Upper Darby, Pa in the ’80s, having movie nights at our parents’ house and eating our feelings. But Jim doesn’t even go here—by “here,” I mean work in the media—so when the folks at Paramount suggested a chat with Daniel Franzese and Jaquel Spivey, the two actors who have played Damian on screen, in support of the digital...

A joke from Mean Girls which Lindsay Lohan pushed back against seems to be missing from at-home versions of the film released last week.
The movie musical version of the film, which began as Tina Fey’s beloved 2004 movie starring Lohan and then went to Broadway before making its way back to the screen this year, became available on digital platforms last week after its theatrical debut in January.
The film, which opened 2024 with a bang at the box office, featured a cameo from Megan Thee Stallion telling Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) that “Y2K fire crotch is back.”
In 2006, a TMZ video made headlines for oil empire heir Brandon Davis’ insulting comments about Lohan, which included him referring to the actress as a “fire crotch.”
The controversial joke is now missing from some versions of the film’s digital release, including an edition rented from Amazon by The Hollywood Reporter.

The 2024 Mean Girls remake faced a torrent of criticism since the trailer dropped in November 2023. Now that it finally hit theaters last month, it hasn’t fared very well.
The new Mean Girls movie is a musical remake, not just a regular one. It’s based on the 2018 Broadway musical, which itself was based on the 2004 film. The movie introduces a new generation of the Plastics to audiences.
Mean Girls
Although the remake failed to capture the original essence of the first flick—Tina Fey strived to make this adaptation of Mean Girls fun, by bringing beloved characters to the screen with a whole new generation.
The Sisters’ star is one of the influential female voices in the industry. With her quirky, comic-genius glory and wit, it’s no wonder why many love her.
That’s why even Auliʻi Cravalho stepped forward to defend her and had something to say to Mean Girls detractors.

If you ask anyone over the age of 25, they'll probably tell you that there's no dollar amount in the world that could ever make them want to go back to high school, and for good reason — high school can be hell. Teen films have been a popular and profitable subgenre for decades, but few films have become a cultural phenomenon quite like "Mean Girls." The film centers on teenager Cady Heron who is starting public school for the first time as a high school junior, having been spared from the cruel cliques or popularity warfare on campus. After a few less-than-stellar days, she catches the eye of Queen Bee Regina George, the leader of a popular clique known as The Plastics who rule North Shore High School with perfectly manicured nails and hair insured for $10,000 (or full of secrets).

Mean Girls has passed $50 million at the domestic box office, making it the first 2024 film to do so. Despite a 59% drop in its second weekend, the movie remains at the top of the domestic box office chart. Mean Girls has been No. 1 for two weeks in a row and could continue this streak for weeks to come.
Mean Girls has passed an important milestone despite stumbling slightly in week 2. The movie musical is the latest in a chain of adaptations, as it dramatizes the 2018 musical of the same name, which adapted the iconic 2004 non-musical comedy of the same name, which itself adapted Rosalind Wiseman's 2002 parenting book Queen Bees and Wannabes. The movie stars Angourie Rice as Cady Heron and Reneé Rapp as Regina George, alongside an ensemble cast that also includes Jaquel Spivey, Auliʻi Cravalho, Christopher Briney, Bebe Wood, Avantika, and returning original cast members Tina Fey and Tim Meadows.

Lindsay Lohan did not appreciate a line in the new Mean Girls film that appears to reference a crude comment about the actress that made headlines nearly two decades ago.
A scene in the Paramount movie, which topped the domestic box office over the weekend, includes Megan Thee Stallion portraying herself as she offers support for Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) by saying, “Y2K fire crotch is back.” Back in 2006, a TMZ video made headlines over oil empire heir Brandon Davis’ insulting comments about Lohan, which included him referring to the actress as a “fire crotch.”
“Lindsay was very hurt and disappointed by the reference in the film,” Lohan’s publicist, Leslie Sloane, said in a statement shared with People and other media outlets.

Originally gracing our screens in 2004, the seminal Mean Girls movie emerged as a cultural touchstone, capturing the essence of the early 2000s through its endlessly quotable lines and resonant exploration of millennial teenage angst. Penned by the comedic genius Tina Fey (Saturday Night Live) and featuring the talents of a youthful Lindsay Lohan (The Parent Trap), the film artfully depicted high school as a tumultuous battleground defined by archetypal cliques.
Fast forward to 2018, and Tina Fey’s original screenplay underwent a theatrical transformation, landing on Broadway as the dazzling Mean Girls: The Musical. However, this triumphant debut was abruptly halted by the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in early 2020, bringing the curtains down on its promising run.
Now, the narrative takes an intriguing turn with the latest iteration of Fey’s beloved tale. This fresh adaptation not only draws inspiration from the original screenplay but also enlists several stars from...

Paramount’s “Mean Girls” musical earned a grool $33.2 million from 3,791 theaters over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, beating expectations.
Based on the Broadway adaptation of the 2004 comedy classic, “Mean Girls” was originally commissioned with plans to skip theaters and make a streaming debut directly on Paramount+, but executives opted for a theatrical release after test screenings. The musical film cost just $36 million.
The new “Mean Girls” stars Angourie Rice as Cady Heron, a role originated by Lindsay Lohan, who must navigate the social scene of her new high school ruled by the Plastics. Reneé Rapp reprises her Broadway role as queen bee Regina George, with a cast that also includes Bebe Wood, Avantika, Jaquel Spivey, Auli’i Cravalho and original stars Tim Meadows and producer-writer Tina Fey.
Paramount intentionally downplayed the song-and-dance numbers in promotional materials for the movie musical, which earned a “B” grade through research firm Cinema Score.

MLK Jr. weekend offered something for everyone at the movies, but two new movies exceeded expectations as they took the top two spots despite weather issues across the country. Read on for the weekend box office report.
The past month has mostly been dominated by musicals, so why not one more, as Paramount released “Mean Girls,” based on the popular Broadway musical, which itself was based on Tina Fey‘s popular 2004 comedy film. With a young cast that included Angourie Rice from the “Spider-Man” movies, Reneé Rapp (“Secret Lives of College Girls”), Auli’i Cravalho (“Moana”), Jaquel Spivey, Avantika, Bebe Wood, Christopher Briney and Jenna Fischer, the movie received a 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is not too bad for a January release.
After making $3.3 million in Thursday previews (including special Wednesday showings), “Mean Girls” made $11.7 million on Friday (including previews) and is estimated to make $28.5 million over the three-day weekend in 3,791 theaters,...

It’s a badge of honor for a movie to be made into a stage musical. It’s an even bigger badge of honor for that musical to be adapted back into a movie of its own. But here we are – 20 years after Mean Girls hit theaters and six years after the show hit Broadway, Mean Girls the musical is now a movie.
Mean Girls is about a teenager named Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) who, until now, has been homeschooled by her mother while Mom does research in Africa. Cady finally gets a chance to attend a regular high school, and it goes about as well as one would expect. To put it plainly, Cady is socially awkward.

For Mean Girls, the movie musical remake of the beloved 2004 comedy, director Arturo Perez Jr. and Samantha Jayne went back to high school. Literally.
The film was shot on location at a shuttered all girl Catholic school in New Jersey. In lieu of trailers, talent — which includes Rene Rapp, Angourie Rice, Tina Fey, Auli’i Cravalho, and Jaquel Spivey — would partition off classrooms, while production offices were in homeroom, and the Covid compliance team posted up the old nurse’s office.
“We tried to make it feel like a camp,” Perez tells The Hollywood Reporter of the set-up. “Especially, with so much pressure that they were putting on themselves from the cultural zietgiest. We wanted to keep it safe and happy and just positive.”
Any pressure stems from the realities of re-imagining the beloved comedy written by Fey that, among certain demographics, barreled towards cult classic status in record time with instantly recognizable one-liners.

Mean Girls is a reimagining of the 2004 classic comedy film as a musical, directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. When Cady Heron and her family move from Africa to the United States; she experiences a culture shock when she enters the public school system for the first time. While trying to fit in, she is roped into the popular but superficial and cruel clique, the Plastics.

Every stage-to-film musical adaptation requires reimagining, rearranging, or removing elements that wouldn't gel well with the camera and the editing room. Retelling "Mean Girls" (every version of which has been penned by Tina Fey) involves the monumental assignment of adapting layers-upon-layers of its sources, starting with Rosalind Wiseman's 2002 nonfiction parent book "Queen Bees and Wannabes," and then moving onto the original 2004 Mark Waters-directed film based on Wiseman's book, the 2018 Casey Nicholaw-directed Broadway stage musical adaptation (which also features music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin), and, finally, the 2024 "Mean Girls" movie musical directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr.
Naturally, the "Mean Girls" movie musical had to scrap several songs and gags from the Broadway stage musical to leave space for makeovers. Theatre heads who've experienced the stage version are bound to notice some major exclusions, including those listed below.

Get in, loser. We’re going to make some money at the box office. Regina George (Reneé Rapp) and the Plastics of Paramount‘s Mean Girls wore green on Thursday when the cult classic comedy musical adaptation banked $3.25M in previews. And that’s 2024, 20 years after the release of the seminal high school movie starring Lindsay Lohan which was based on the non-fiction book Queen Bees and Wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman. Fashions have changed, social media is now ubiquitous, but teenage girls are still cliquey and judgey so the story hasn’t required a massive update. Perhaps that’s to its detriment, because this movie, directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr., is really an example of pop culture eating itself. The musical came because people liked the film. Now the new film exists, presumably for people who like the musical, while not having the unique selling point of it being on the stage. But if you can get over the audacity...

Yes, the mean gals and school life of North Shore High are on display musically, and updated from its 2004 roots to present time, as transfer student Cady (Angourie Rice) is trying to fit in, with help from outcasts Janis (Alee Cra-val-ho) and Damian (Ja-quel Spivey). When Cady is invited to the alpha girls lunch table, with mean leader Regina (Renee Rapp), she is about to begin a journey that makes her an insider to all the nasty tactics that the gang uses to rule their high school domain. Which attitude will Cady adopt?

The very first shot of the 2024 musical reimagining of "Mean Girls" is a vertical frame. Two characters, Janis (played by Auli'i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey), film themselves singing a song that sets the stage for the story to follow. They're troubadours for the TikTok set - and this is a "Mean Girls" for a new generation.
The Cady Heron, Regina George, and Aaron Samuels of the original film, released in 2004, had never seen an iPhone - those wouldn't debut for another three years. "Instagram," "Twitter," and "Snapchat" would have sounded like gibberish. Karen was just a name, and Donald Trump was just a business mogul.
Twenty years later . . . well, things are different. We've seen not just a technological revolution, but a cultural one. More Americans have become more aware of how rampant racism and discrimination - from microaggressions to hate crimes - are in this country. And while we...

After a late start to its fourth season and behind-the-scenes turmoil, The Drew Barrymore Show has received and early, drama-free renewal for a fifth season on the CBS Stations.
It is the first pickup for the syndicated daytime talker since the major reorganization at the show’s producer and distributor CBS Media Ventures, which was put under the purview of Wendy McMahon, now President and CEO of CBS News and Stations and CBS Media Ventures.
The renewal also comes after a rocky fall for The Drew Barrymore Show whose host originally announced a Sept. 18 return, while the writers were still striking, before reversing the decision amid picketing of the show and outcry from WGA members.
Season 4 instead launched post-strike on Oct. 16 but without the program’s three WGA-member writers who declined to return and had to be replaced.
Whether it was fans of the show moving past the controversy or...

Tina Fey stopped by The Tonight Show to promote the Mean Girls musical movie and host Jimmy Fallon challenged her to a new game called “Friendzee.” The game basically involves trying to guess the name of a mutual pal by asking random and “not helpful” questions from a pile of cards. Funny and a chance to humble brag about the famous people they both know.
The first friend was Rachel Dratch, who Fey had to guess with Fallon describing what sort of breakfast cereal she would be (Fruity Pebbles or...

Tina Fey's Mean Girls adaptation cleverly satirizes social media while pulling out all the stops in a big, bold musical. The visually and musically dynamic remake stands on its own and features an excellent and diverse cast, especially Reneé Rapp as Regina George. The direction incorporates social media expertly, but the film feels rushed at points. Nonetheless, it's a whole lot of fun.
Tina Fey's high school clique comedy gets a groovy, eye-popping adaptation sure to win over fans of the classic original film and hit Broadway musical. Mean Girls cleverly satirizes social media while singing, dancing, and backstabbing its way to comic glory. Slick visual effects and sharp editing add a new dimension to a known narrative. But most importantly, it doesn't lose sight of a critical moral lesson about a continued problem — the ugly scourge of bullying and low self-esteem pervades. Mean Girls reminds us that everyone...
