The Inside Out franchise may not be finished just yet. Inside Out 2 director Kelsey Mann and producer Mark Nielsen recently talked about the film at the Critics’ Choice Awards, hinting that there’s plenty of potential for another sequel.
‘This world is so rich. You can go down so many roads,’ Nielsen told. ‘There are so many emotions to explore. There are further stages in Riley’s life. You never know.’ That sounds promising, but before you get too excited, he also admitted that there’s nothing officially in the works yet.
‘There’s nothing in progress right now,‘ he said. But with how well the last movie performed, a third film seems like an obvious next step.
Inside Out 2 smashed records when it hit theaters in 2024. It raked in an unbelievable $1.699 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing animated film of all time. Disney is known for following the money,...

No animated movie dominated 2024 quite like Pixar’s “Inside Out 2.” The sequel, which saw lead character Riley, now a teenager, dealing with brand-new emotions like Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), Envy (Ayo Edebiri) and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser), was an instant sensation. The follow-up to 2015’s “Inside Out” (which won the Best Animated Feature Oscar) is now the top-grossing animated movie of all time and the eighth highest-grossing film ever and has appeared on a number of year-end best-of lists. For director Kelsey Mann, the only emotion he’s feeling is joy.
“To have the response be what it was for this film was beyond what I had hoped for,” Mann said. “I hoped that people would go to the theaters and see it. And man, did they show up. It was apparent from that first weekend that people were excited to see the next chapter in Riley’s life.

If you managed to get through Pixar's summer blockbuster, Inside Out 2, without actually or almost crying then consider yourself lucky. The animated hit follows Riley's (Kensington Tallman) five emotions from the first film — Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Liza Lapira), and Fear (Tony Hale) — as they meet four new additions to headquarters: Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser), and Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos). Joy and Anxiety clash for control of Riley's mind, and their conflict finally culminates in the film's most heartbreaking scene, when Riley has an all-out anxiety attack in the middle of hockey tryouts.

Inside Out gets a new fan-made, live-action concept trailer, imagining Sadie Sink and Jenna Ortega in lead roles. Released in 2015, Inside Out hails from directors Pete Doctor and Ronnie Del Carmen, with a story that follows Riley and her various emotions most notably Amy Poehler's Joy as she moves to a city and new school. After the first film was a major hit with audiences and critics alike, Riley's story continued in Disney's Inside Out 2, which hit theaters earlier this summer and introduced a handful of new animated characters.
Multiverse of Movies now imagines what Inside Out would look like if it made the jump to live-action with an AI-generated concept trailer. The trailer features a mix of new and familiar cast members, with some members of the franchise's voice cast becoming live-action versions of their animated characters. After the immense success of Inside Out 2, a fan-made concept trailer imagines how the story of the franchise would play out in a live-action film. It's the latest video to utilize AI to picture what a live-action adaptation of an animated movie may look like.
The video was posted on YouTube by Multiverse of Movies. It's the same channel that has previously shared live-action movie concept trailers for animated shows like The Simpsons, South Park, and Futurama, as well as video games such as Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Other Pixar films have also gotten the treatment, including Toy Story and The Incredibles. Similarly, Inside Out has now gotten a concept trailer of its own, which was made with the assistance of AI-generated imagery.

Inside Out 2 is an excellent sequel that builds on the original films premise, as Riley (Kensington Tallman) hits puberty. An array of more complex emotions are added to the mix, with Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Ennui (Adle Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser) joining original characters Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Fear (Tony Hale), Disgust (Liza Lapira), and Anger (Lewis Black). Though the emotions are brought to life impeccably, the film is missing something that elevated the originals emotional impact Bing Bong (Richard Kind).

Zia Anger first endeavored to make a film years ago, shooting a project titled Always All Ways, Anne Marie on a shoestring budget with friends. However, this debut feature was never completed. In My First Film, Anger revisits that unfinished work and creative period through a uniquely experimental lens.
Playing with fiction and nonfiction, the movie incorporates reenactments starring Odessa Young as Vita, a stand-in for Anger. Through Vita’s experiences directing that long-ago production and subsequent reflections, My First Film offers an artfully unflinching perspective on the difficulties of being a young female filmmaker.
By blending scenes from her actual first shoot with new material, Anger layers intimate retrospection over dynamic recreations. We watch as Vita navigates a chaotic set, dealing with inexperience, interpersonal frictions, and her own growing pains.
Between location sequences, her voiceover analyzes past decisions and outcomes with candid wisdom. Flashing between time periods, Anger crafts...

Paul Schrader is the latest “Joker: Folie à Deux” critic.
The auteur seemingly couldn’t find any semblance of his “Taxi Driver” or Martin Scorsese’s “King of Comedy” in “Joker: Folie à Deux,” despite director Todd Phillips saying both inspired the Oscar-winning first film, 2019’s “Joker.” Frequent Schrader collaborator Scorsese also executive produced “Joker” but did not return for the sequel.
Schrader told Interview magazine, while in discussion with Jeremy O. Harris, that he couldn’t even sit in the theater for “Folie à Deux” past a (non-consecutive) 25 minutes.
“I see who’s coming up. I go to the multiplex,” Schrader said of his pastimes when not writing and directing. “I saw ‘Joker: Folie à Deux.’ I saw about 10 or 15 minutes of it. I left, bought something, came back, saw another 10 minutes. That was enough.”
He added that “Folie à Deux” is a “really bad musical.”

The box office smash Inside Out 2, from Disney and Pixar, is confirmed for Disney+ UK at the end of this very month.
Currently sitting as the biggest film of the year at the global box office, the record-shattering sequel Inside Out 2 has given Disney, Pixar and multiplexes one hell of a shot in the arm this year. For Pixar in particular it’s been good to see, given how Disney has shortchanged so many of its films in recent years by letting them bypass cinemas and going direct to its Disney+streaming service.
In the case of Inside Out 2, it is going to streaming of course, but only several months after its cinema debut. In fact, we’ve got word now that Disney will be putting the film on its Disney+ service from 25th September 2024. That’s two weeks away from the point this story is being written.

Pixar’s Inside Out 2 is set to begin streaming on Disney+ on September 25, the studio announced via its social media channels on Thursday.
The film hits streaming following an astonishing theatrical debut in June, which has made it the highest-grossing film of the year at over $1.6 billion worldwide. Marking the feature directorial debut of Kelsey Mann, the sequel has also broken records to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time, as well as the eighth highest-grossing film of all time, and the first animated feature to gross over $1 billion overseas.
The coming-of-age film follows up Inside Out, Pixar’s 2015 Oscar winner directed by Pete Docter, which won hearts with its depiction of a young girl named Riley and the complex emotions she faces, all of which are brought to life on screen. The sequel finds Riley entering puberty and experiencing brand new, more complex emotions as a result.

“Inside Out 2” is coming home.
The Pixar Animation Studios feature, which is now the highest-grossing animated movie of all time, has set a streaming release date on Disney+ for Sept. 25.

Kamala Harris earned praise from Hollywood following her first presidential debate against Donald Trump, which many in the industry viewed as a resounding triumph for Harris’ campaign. Mark Ruffalo, for instance, posted on X (formerly Twitter) that he was initially “anxious” for the debate but the results could not have been more positive.
“What is clear is that Kamala not only has a vision for the future and lifting America up but she is just so much even-tempered and so much smarter that Trump,” Ruffalo wrote. “She crushed him.”
“It was like watching Muhammad Ali: she baited him and then let him swing wildly until he sputtered out,” he added in a follow-up post on X.
“Parks and Recreation” favorite Nick Offerman was even more blunt in his assessment of the debate in favor of Harris: “That was a good old-fashioned ass-whupping”
“This man is weak, stupid and delusional!

Odessa Young knew right away she wanted to be a part of “My First Film,” director Zia Anger’s retelling about her first feature, 2010’s “Always All Ways, Anne Marie,” failing to be accepted to any film festivals.
Young plays a fictionalized Anger named Vita. The movie follows Vita making a scrappy independent film in her hometown, and her unraveling as she has to cope with a burdensome boyfriend who wants them to become first-time parents.
Young was first introduced to “My First Film” when Anger toured the story as a performance art piece. “I received an email from [producer] Taylor Shung and there was a script and a very nice letter rom Zia,” Young tells me. “I was already in it at that point because I’d been hearing whispers of the project and that they were interested in me so I was really excited about it.”

There has never been a movie like Zia Anger’s My First Film, which premiered at Cph Dox - although it is primarily a hybrid, leaning towards fiction - and which has just landed on Mubi after a tour of festivals. But is it a good thing? Many critics seem to be quite enthusiastic about it…
Its title pretty much answers the question of what it is about, but there is a bit of history to be dealt with here. Namely, Anger’s intended feature debut Always All Ways, Anne Marie was a very difficult production on the verge of being considered “haunted”, and, after it was finally finished, it failed to secure a festival premiere and any form of distribution. The filmmaker went on with her career, directing music videos and shorts. At one point she also converted her experiences with her haunted first film into a live performance piece.

Zia Anger’s My First Film blends documentary and feature style to create a personal visual essay about the exhausting yet exhilarating process of making a film. Anger’s first film, “Always All Ways, Anne Marie,” was rejected by over fifty film festivals. She then went on to create an interactive screenlife film, and the influence of the interactive style is visible in her recent work. It is difficult to say when Anger’s personal life ends and where Vita, the protagonist’s fictional life begins, and that is perhaps why we are repeatedly told that it is a true story—well, not entirely. Vita, a twenty-five-year-old passionate young director, travels to her hometown to shoot her first film with her friends and family. When you have watched hundreds of films, it is a challenge to find your own voice. Even if not consciously done, you end up borrowing styles from your favorite directors.

Filmmaker Zia Anger takes an innovative approach to exploring her artistic journey in the new movie “My First Film.” Rather than telling a straightforward narrative, the film blends behind-the-scenes footage, fictional scenes, and commentary to examine Anger’s experience making her debut feature over a decade ago. Starring Odessa Young as a character named Vita who represents Anger, the movie follows Vita’s struggles completing her movie amid personal and work challenges.
At its core, the film focuses on Anger’s unsuccessful first movie from long ago. That project never found success on the festival circuit. Now, Anger looks back on that time and her emotions through “My First Film.” She combines memories with new material to chronicle the messy process of creation. Young immerses herself in the role of Vita, blurring the line between acting and channeling real feelings.
Anger wanted to create a unique tapestry showing the experience of art-making.

On a Zoom with writer/director Zia Anger and actor Odessa Young to chat their new film, “My First Film,” the lovefest that exists between the two is immediately clear.
The amount of respect and admiration between the filmmaking and star is palpable as they talk about undertaking Anger’s “My First Film,” based on her 2019 multimedia art project of the same name, which was itself about her lost film “Always All Ways, Annie Marie.” Young plays Vita, a filmmaker who looks back at making her movie — about a woman played by her friend Dina (Devon Ross) — who gets pregnant and decides to leave home. It also looks at Vita’s own history with her queer parents and extraordinary conception story, as she was raised by two mothers and a gay father, who brought over his sperm during a blizzard for Anger’s mothers to use to conceive her. “My First Film,...

Summer’s over. Looks like it’s time to get back to work. And by work, we mean some serious movie watching. Luckily September doesn’t disappoint. We have everything from the highly-anticipated Megaopolis, the self-funded opus from Francis Ford Coppola, to the star-studded Netflix affair His Three Daughters, to the return of the king of tight, gnarly thrillers, Jeremy Saulnier, with his new one, Rebel Ridge. Oh, and a doc about psychics from a Fast-Track alum, with Lana Wilson’s Look Into My Eyes. Looks like the fall is shaping up to be quite the movie season. Now get out there and start watching!

All movies are made by people, but few feel as guided by the hand of fate as Zia Anger’s My First Film. A certain subset of plugged-in cinephiles might recognize the name of the project from its many years as a performance piece, starting in 2018 at Brooklyn’s Spectacle Theater before going on tour and eventually evolving to be a shared online experience during the pandemic. Using the footage from her would-be directorial debut, Always All Ways, Anne Marie, which IMDb declared “abandoned,” Anger constructed an interactive screenlife film that interrogated her fraught relationship with the material.
This initial iteration of My First Film channeled Anger’s frustration with the filmmaking and festival ecosystems into something that could establish a more honest connection with an audience. With her back to the audience and a TextEdit document open alongside QuickTime files of her aborted freshman feature, Anger provided an unflinching...

Zia Anger’s name has not broken into the mainstream; it’s instead been a kind of totem for underground film artistry, to whatever extent that even exists anymore. Her presentation-based My First Film earned traction as the ultimate vision / confession of artistic failure and regret, making somewhat peculiar the existence of My First Film, a feature debut-of-sorts that details her younger self’s failure to launch a filmmaking career. Or someone like her: the lead character is Vita, a shortsighted and temperamental young director failing to control cast, crew, ideas, or impulses; but present in the film, too, is Zia, who reflects on this difficult time in the character’s (her?) life.
Fear not any risk of complication. Conceptually fluid and nimbly assembled, My First Film makes legible––dare I say universal?––thwarted dreams and personal embarrassment vis-à-vis its interplay of Anger’s actual work and Vita’s staged endeavors.

Inside Out 2 is still going strong on the big screen, out-grossing new films and climbing domestic chart. The sequel surpassed the original's earnings with impressive slim declines each weekend, surpassing Pixar's all-time best. The potential is there to climb even higher on the domestic gross chart, possibly beating Jurassic World for 10th place all-time.
Even though it's been in theaters two months, Disney's Inside Out 2 is still raking in the cash, as evidenced by the fact that, in its eighth weekend, it out-grossed newcomer Harold and the Purple Crayon. The Pixar sequel netted $6.7 million this weekend, making yet another slim weekend-to-weekend decline of just 22.3%. This puts it at $626.9 million which, according to Box Office Mojo, 12th on the all-time domestic gross chart, a little over $3 million ahead of 2012's fellow Disney film The Avengers.
That's not adjusted for inflation, but wildly impressive nonetheless. This is especially true...

Emotions are riding high at Pixar Studios as Inside Out 2 overtakes The Avengers as one of Hollywood’s Top 10 highest-grossing movies worldwide! Several weeks into the animated sequel’s release, Inside Out 2 feels joyous. With a global total of $1.524B, it surpasses Furious 7 ($1.515B) and The Avengers ($1.521B) to claim the 10th spot on the all-time list.
Inside Out 2 is earning plenty of domestic dollars but is also a smash overseas with $905.1M. It’s the highest-grossing film ever in Mexico. Astonishingly, the international total does not include Japan, where the film opens today. In other words, a whole different market is waiting to experience Inside Out 2 and add to Pixar’s coffers.

Animated motion picture history is upon us, friends! Pixar‘s Inside Out 2 is the highest-grossing animated film ever after surpassing Disney’s Frozen 2 at the global box office. The emotionally charged sequel achieved this milestone after six weeks of release, with a total domestic value of $601 million and $861 million internationally, totaling $1.46 billion! This astonishing achievement unseats Disney’s Frozen 2 after the sing-a-long sequel banked $1.45 billion at the box office. Disney’s The Lion King remake made an astounding $1.65M, but the Jon Favreau-directed film is technically a live-action CGI hybrid.
Looking at the numbers, Inside Out 2 beat Greta Gerwig’s Barbie in ticket sales, becoming the 13th-biggest movie ever. It is also the fastest animated movie to surpass the $1 billion mark after 19 days of release. Moreover, Pixar’s sequel is the highest-grossing film of 2024.

Disney is jumping for Joy. That’s because the studio’s emotion-laden “Inside Out 2” has surpassed “Frozen II” to stand as the highest-grossing animated film in history.
After six weeks of release, “Inside Out 2” has generated $601 million domestically and $861 million internationally, bringing its global tally to a staggering $1.46 billion. “Frozen II” was bigger than the very successful original 2013 film and collected a mighty $1.45 billion during its theatrical run in 2019.
In terms of global ticket sales, “Inside Out 2” just overtook “Barbie” ($1.446 billion) as the 13th-biggest movie of all time. Among its many records, the Pixar sequel is the fastest animated film to cross the $1 billion benchmark, having done so in 19 days. It’s also the highest-grossing movie of 2024 to date, and the only one this year to join the billion-dollar club.

Joy must be working overtime in the minds of Disney’s higher-ups, because Inside Out 2 continues to make money. Heading into Fourth of July weekend, the film has stayed at number one and looks to drop off small again, even with challenger Despicable Me 4. But before the film released, fans had to deal with one of the new emotions introduced in the film: anxiety. And that’s because Disney Pixar was messing with the formula that made the first film so wonderful by switching out the voices for two of the central character.
The first Inside Out from 2015 focused on Joy (Amy Poehler) and her opposite Sadness (Phyllis Smith), two of the emotions living inside the head of pre-teen Riley. The two learn to deal with one another as Riley moves with her parents from Minnesota to California, which upsets her otherwise calm life.

Talk about a mood booster. Disney and Pixar’s emotion-laden “Inside Out 2” is the first film of the year to hit $1 billion at the global box office.
After 19 days of release, the animated sequel has grossed $469.3 million in North America and $545.5 million internationally for a worldwide tally of $1.015 billion. It’s one of 11 animated films to join the billion-dollar club (eight of which are Disney titles), and it’s the fastest animated release to do so.
When “Inside Out 2” opened in theaters on June 14, the film shattered expectations with $151 million domestically and overtook “Dune: Part 2” ($711 million) as the biggest opening of the year. It was also the first movie since last July’s “Barbie” ($162 million) to debut above $100 million. Since then, the second “Inside Out” has retained the top spot on box office charts for three consecutive weekends and became the highest-grossing movie domestically and globally of 2024. Everyone is getting emotional about Pixar‘s Inside Out 2 and its outstanding box office performance. Shining bright with $334M+ worldwide after one weekend in cinemas, fans of Pixar’s latest trip into Riley Andersen’s mind are already wondering when we’ll get another film in the series. While Pixar has not mentioned Inside Out 3, that’s not keeping Paul Walter Hauser, who voices Embarrassment in the movie, from sharing who he thinks should play a new emotion in a sequel. According to Hauser, Jon Hamm should join the cast of Inside Out 3 as the voice of Competition.
“I wanted Jon Hamm to voice Competition or a competitive nature.” Hauser said while speaking with CinemaBlend about Pixar’s latest smash hit. “That dude [Hamm] is a real player. He can be thrown into anything.”
Sitting next to Hauser during the interview is Lewis Black, who reprises his role as Anger in Inside Out 2.

Friendship replaces Family Island as Riley's biggest emotional focus in Inside Out 2. Teenage Riley prioritizes friendships over family in the sequel, reflecting a common adolescent feeling. As Riley's core memories change, her personality islands and external relationships also shift, illustrating Inside Out 2's ability to make abstract concepts more accessible.
A sequel to Pixar's 2015 hit, Inside Out 2 has bucked 2024's disappointing box-office trend, garnering a whopping $295 million globally over its opening weekend. Not only is the Inside Out follow-up positioned to be the 2024 movie that dethrones Dune 2, but it's also the best theatrical opening weekend since 2023's Barbie, which went on to gross $1.446 billion. While Inside Out 2 has struck gold, both financially and narrative-wise, by revisiting the inventive world inside Riley's mind, the Pixar sequel has also prompted viewers to wonder about some key differences between the Inside Out films.

The ongoing struggle to elevate animated features to the same level of best-picture recognition as live-action films will undoubtedly resurface by year’s end. This time, the spotlight will be on Pixar’s highly successful sequel, “Inside Out 2,” a film that could bring joy and success amid a dark cloud hovering around Hollywood studios.
With debut director Kelsey Mann taking over from Pete Docter, the second installment follows Riley (Kensington Tallman) during her teenage years. Along with her core emotions — Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear, and Disgust — she begins encountering new emotions, notably Anxiety (Maya Hawke).
The first film had a budget of $175 million and made $858 million worldwide. It received two Oscar noms for original screenplay and animated feature, winning the latter. However, during the era when the Academy recognized 5-10 movies for best picture, it didn’t land among the eight that included...

[Editor’s note: Spoilers for “Inside Out 2” below.]
There’s a lot to unpack psychologically in “Inside Out 2” (currently in theaters), which adds more emotional complexity to the franchise. This provided Pixar with imaginative visual opportunities along with a lot more screen time for teen Riley (Kensington Tallman).
Which means puberty literally takes a wrecking ball to Riley’s emotional stability, signaling the arrival of Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser). Anxiety sees herself as an agent of change in reshaping Riley’s future in high school, and hockey camp offers the first opportunity to test her ideas. When Joy (Amy Poehler) and her front-line team of Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Tony Hale), and Disgust (Liza Lapira) refuse to cooperate, Anxiety throws away Riley’s crystal-shaped Sense of Self and banishes them to her Vault of Secrets as suppressed emotions.

Back in 2015, Pixar's "Inside Out" brought us into the mind of Riley, a young girl living with her family in Minnesota. We watched as Riley grew up through the eyes of her core emotions: Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Bill Hader), and Disgust (Mindy Kaling). Each of the emotions helped shape Riley's life experiences, but as she got older and dealt with the challenge of moving from Minnesota to San Francisco, it brought a lesson for both Riley and Joy.
While Joy was always trying to make sure Riley was happy, the energetic emotion had to realize that sometimes it's okay for Riley to be sad, and experiencing sadness can ultimately bring us right back to happiness. But as we left Riley on the cusp of her becoming a teenager at the end of "Inside Out," there were still many more lessons for Riley and Joy to learn.
