Halloween: Resurrection in 2002 seemed to close the door on the original film’s run. It had run out of gas and failed both critically, with a 10% score on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as commercially, with it only bringing in 37 million on its 15-million-dollar budget. The next year would see Freddy and Jason clash with each other and Leatherface get the remake treatment from studio Platinum Dunes. While Freddy and Jason would get their own remakes in 2009 and 2010 respectively, you know you can’t keep a good masked villain down for long. So, before his two main slasher rivals got their day in the sun, Michael Myers would receive his own remake that came out in 2007. With a drastically different take and a new producer behind the wheel, Halloween would get a chance to do something drastically different than anything we had seen before. Everyone will be entitled to one good...

Whether you like him or hate him, you can’t ignore M. Night Shyamalan. Yeah, it’s certainly a cliched thing to say, but wouldn’t you agree that this man is a force of nature? Naturally, everything he does, good or bad, automatically becomes an event. Of course, his bad outweighs the good in recent times, but his latest, Trap, did seem like a winner ever since the trailer dropped. It would be easy to simply peg The Mattachine Family as an LGBTQ film. It is that, but so much more, too. Relationships, friendships, and a longing for family command the spotlight in director Andy Vallentine’s heartwarming feature, which he cowrote with his screenwriter Danny Vallentine. Tapping into those universal themes elevates this emotionally rich tale, one that will not only make audiences laugh and cry on different occasions, but also inspire them to reflect on the bounty of good that exists in their lives, especially during life transitions.
The Mattachine Family is currently on the festival circuit, most recently premiering at Chicago’s LGBTQ Reeling Film Festival. The movie stars Nico Tortorella, Juan Pablo Di Pace, Emily Hampshire (Schitt’s Creek), Cloie Wyatt Taylor, Heather Matarazzo, Carl Clemons-Hopkins (Hacks), Jake Choi (Single Parents), and Colleen Foy (Quantum Leap).

As the 79th Venice Film Festival arrives at the halfway mark, a handful of titles are emerging as this year’s favorites, at least judged by the response of audiences and festival critics.
With just under a week to go before the Venice jury, under president Julianne Moore, crowns the 2022 Golden Lion winner on Sept.10, Todd Field’s Tár is lengths ahead of the festival pack. The bracing drama, a portrait of a driven, tyrannical classical composer and conductor who gets caught up in a #MeToo scandal — played by Cate Blanchett with a ferocious intensity that already has handicappers whispering “Oscar” — the film wowed critics and the Venice audience in equal measure.
The key talking point will be Blanchett’s astonishing performance — flinty, commandingly self-possessed and ever so slowly splintering under pressure,” wrote The Hollywood Reporter‘s chief film critic David Rooney in his rave review.
