Vietnam’s Bhd & Vietnam Media Corp are launching sales here in Cannes on historical martial arts action movie The Last Secret Of The First Emperor, set to star Johnny Tri Nguyen (Da 5 Bloods).

The film will be directed by Nguyen Phan Quang Binh, known for war drama Song Of The Stork (2002), which was sold to more than 25 territories, and The Floating Lives (2010), which at the time of its release was Vietnam’s highest grossing arthouse film ever. His recent credits include romantic drama Secrets Of The Wind (2019).

Johnny Tri Nguyen, a Vietnamese-American actor whose credits include Spike Lee’s Vietnam-set Da 5 Bloods, will also serve as martial arts action director on the film. Nguyen, who works between the U.S. and Asia, has also had roles in action films such as Charlie Nguyen’s The Rebel and Fanatic and Prachya Pinkaew’s The Protector.

Road House stunt coordinator Garrett Warren came up with a clever means of making the remake’s fights look realistic without breaking any bones.

Whether or not you think it’s sacrilege to remake the 1989 cult favourite, Road House, it’s arguable that director Doug Liman directed his fight scenes with gleeful rawness – faces are pummelled, bodies are sent crashing through tables, and backsides are well and truly kicked.

Of all the current action stars, there’s likely no current draw with the expertise in fight scenes that Scott Adkins does. Despite their small size and inexperience, having grown up under the roof of a Muay Thai school two young brothers and their friends have become highly skilled, if undisciplined, martial artists. Sadly, the youngest of the gang suffers from an acute heart condition, which following a minor scuffle with some local bullies lands him in hospital and desperately in need of a life-saving transplant. Fortunately, a viable heart soon becomes available at another local hospital, but before it can be transferred the building is overtaken by rebel soldiers-turned-terrorists prepared to kill if their politically-driven demands are not met by the authorities.

With only four hours in which the surgery can be performed successfully, the young friends take it upon themselves to infiltrate the hospital and retrieve the donated organ.

Best known around these parts for her key roles in Vietnamese action films The Rebel and Clash - both opposite screen fighter Johnny Tri Nguyen - singer, model and actress Veronica Ngo (Ngo Thanh Van) is adding 'director' to her already impressive resume with a big screen adaptation of a classic Vietnamese fairy tale with Tam Cam: Chuyen Chua Ke. A classic Vietnamese tale with some obvious similarities to the Cinderella story, Ngo seems to be giving the story a bit of the Huntsman treatment with a glossy action-fantasy approach to a previously 'untold' part of the tale featuring large scale battles and some sort of angry, spindly legged cat creature. Call Charlie Nguyen's upcoming Fan Cuong the reverse Back To The Future. There's no going to hte past to get people together here, nope. Instead, in Fan Cuong, long haired rock and roll fan played by comedian Thai Hoa must travel back in time to prevent the singer of the most important band in Vietnamese history (Johnny Tri Nguyen) from abandoning it all for a woman. The solution, of course, is to land the woman before the singer can. It's a phenomenally silly premise from the entire creative team behind martial arts hit The Rebel and, true to form where these guys are concerned, the production value is absolutely top notch. Thai Hoa takes the lead in upcoming Vietnamese time travel rock and roll comedy Fan Cuong and while Hoa may not be familiar to audiences outside of Vietnam the rest of the team here certainly is. Fan Cuong brings together the entire creative team from martial arts film The Rebel and throws them into an entirely new context with director Charlie Nguyen also penning the script here and The Rebel leading man Johnny Tri Nguyen showing up as the feathered haired potential savior of Vietnamese rock and roll. As a tribute to artist H.R. Giger, Javi Recio created the sketch above featuring the Giger drawing the Xenomorph alien that helped make him famous. I've included more art from different artists below. The artist passed away on Monday after suffering a fall in his museum. I've been a huge fan of his art since I was a teenager. I worked for an illustrator at the time, and he's the one that introduced me to the artist along with several others.

A rare export from Vietnam, The Lady Assassin is a classic martial arts romp in the old Shaw Brothers vein. It sucks, I know, but it's official. According to the Vietnam Film Department, Cho Lon (original title: Bụi đời Chợ Lớn) has been banned. Given that local clearance is required before Vietnamese producers are permitted to release a film internationally, this means the film isn't just banned in Vietnam, but won't be seen anywhere.In April, the Nguyen brothers' project was blocked by Vietnamese censors due to the violence of the killing between gangsters in Chinatown. It was announced today that the film has not been able to pass Vietnamese censorship and the release date is now on indefinite hold.Producers have reportedly submitted multiple versions of the film to local censors in an attempt to pass local requirements and meet their April release date but all have been denied. It’s a damn fine action movie starring Nguyen’s brother Johnny Nguyen, Veronica Ngo, and Dustin Nguyen (no relation to Charlie or Johnny). Dustin’s moved on to bigger and better things, directing and starring in the very cool looking “Once Upon a Time in Vietnam”, while the Nguyen brothers have re-team on “Chinatown”, a gang film that, from the looks of the trailer, promises plenty of melodrama and action. As for the plot of “Chinatown”, the whole thing apparently concerns a gang war in Saigon’s Chinatown between two rival factions during a 24-hour period. '7aam Arivu' has dared to tread on a different path by talking about rejuvenating the 'past glory' by reactivating DNA of one's forefathers. It also talks about bio-war waged by a neighbouring country.

The movie begins with a well-made documentary on Pallava prince, Bodhi Dharman (Suriya), who lived in 500 BC. He travelled to China and took shelter in a hamlet. His excellence in medical science and martial arts save the villagers from various dangers and they fall at.

The Film:

If you’ve ever seen The Rebel, a wonderful Vietnamese martial art period film, featuring the two stars of Clash; Johnny Nguyen and Thanh Van Ngo, you know or should anticipate these two being huge action stars. They have charisma, which doesn’t necessarily mean much in the world of action, but it’s a quality that you either have or you don’t, and since they do, it should make them bigger international stars. After Clash, you will know why, but re-watch The Rebel.

Clash begins much like Reservoir Dogs, where a team is built in order to do some thieving and get code names. It’s a nice homage or maybe a direct steal, but it doesn’t hurt the film. Like it or not, we, the American people, have set a precedent for what makes a successful action movie – among them a ruthless but righteous protagonist, a villain with a taste for the theatrical, and of course chubby comic relief that gets plugged early on in the picture. Clash (Bay Rong) adheres to those principles as dogmatically as possible, and you know what? Despite a cautionary budget for making a full-fledged action picture, it works, at its best no worse than a low-rent Statham flick. The choreography is serviceable and occasionally impressive, and there’s plenty of plot to go around – only the third acts sags, and coming up on the heels of an exciting hour and twenty minutes, that’s a bargain.
