15 Most Underrated TV Shows On Netflix
Image
For the past few years, Netflix could fairly be accused of employing a strategy of throwing everything they've got against a wall and seeing what sticks. With new series and original films premiering on a weekly basis, viewers are both spoiled for choice and browbeaten into submission with the sheer quantity of options at their fingertips. But let's be honest, quality control hasn't exactly been the name of the game for the streamer. They traffic in numbers, pure and simple, and with enough content there's sure to be some projects that end up being winners. That's just the law of probabilities.

But this approach has an unintended side effect, in that plenty of genuinely good shows fall by the wayside, ignored by viewers in a media landscape where its physically impossible to pay attention to every new release. Whether they were cancelled too early, failed to find an audience, or...

Most of the main players return, and that should lead to season 2 success.

After all, there is no doubt that season 1 was a massive success. The series reached the top 10 in 89 different countries. The show also reached number two on Netflix's Global Top 10, a fantastic thing for an English-language show.

Surprise! Geek Girl finally gets exciting renewal news
Image
One of Netflix's most underrated teen shows has finally received some good news after nearly a year of silence. Geek Girl has been officially renewed for a second season, meaning we haven't seen the last of the charmingly awkward Harriet Manners as she continues to juggle the challenges of teenage life and the ever-changing demands of high fashion.

The renewal comes as a surprise, given that it's been 11 months since the first season premiered on Netflix and the streamer had remained completely silent about the show's future until now. Netflix typically announces renewals much sooner, which is why many fans believed that Geek Girl had been quietly dropped after just one season. Fortunately, we now know that's not the case, and soon we'll get to see Harriet back for another chapter of awkward missteps, personal growth, and fashion world drama.

You're probably wondering why it took so long for...

‘Geek Girl’ Renewed For Season 2 By Netflix After Delay
Image
This is news that likely few were expecting by now — Netflix has picked up a second season of British-Canadian coming-of-age series Geek Girl, starring Emily Carey. That is because the renewal comes exactly 11 months after the show’s May 30, 2024 debut. Shooting will begin in the UK this summer for a 2026 debut.

The half-hour series, based on the popular YA novels by Holly Smale, had made a strong case for renewal by spending four weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10 for English-language series, peaking at #2, reaching the Top 10 in 89 countries and amassing 28.1M views in its first seven months of release. The solid performance, coupled with a pretty modest budget and positive reviews from critics should’ve translated into a quick renewal.

So why the unusually long delay then?

A change in the series’ production credits may provide a clue. Season 1 was produced and distributed by Canada’s troubled Corus Entertainment through subsidiaries.

“They’re allowed to be unlikeable”: ‘House of the Dragon’ Star Emily Carey’s Latest Hit Addresses an Important Issue That Most Coming-of-Age Shows Overlook
Image
With a repertoire of acclaimed films and shows under her belt, Emily Carey has stepped in the shoes of many characters. She’s played the thrill-seeking Lara Croft in Tomb Raider, portrayed a young Alicent Hightower in the Got spinoff House of the Dragon, and most recently depicted the social pariah but incredibly clever teen, Harriet Manners in Netflix’s Geek Girl.

But what’s special about the latest coming-of-age drama is that it tackles a rather grave subject that we barely get to see on-screen these days.

Emily Carey-Led Geek Girl Confronts An Imperative Matter

The glamorous world of teenagers in many coming-of-age films and series depicts life through a rose-tinted glass, coveted by many but that which exists solely in the realm of fiction. Geek Girl, however, refrains from veiling reality behind a tantalizing facade and instead acknowledges quite an important issue – humans aren’t flawless.

‘Geek Girl’ Review: Emily Carey Shines in Netflix’s Wholesome YA Fashion Comedy
Image
One of the trickiest aspects of HBO’s House of the Dragon was the way viewers spent roughly half of the drama’s first season with “younger” versions of our two heroines — Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower — before a time jump brought longer-term stars Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke to the screen.

That put a lot of pressure on Milly Alcock and Emily Carey to anchor those initial episodes, which they did extremely well. Alcock had the greater visibility, quickly becoming a red carpet favorite and setting herself up for the opportunity to play Supergirl. Carey’s first major House of the Dragon follow-up, Netflix’s adaptation of Holly Smale’s coming-of-age Geek Girl series, isn’t as high profile as joining DC’s House of Zor-El, but it’s a solid showcase for its 21-year-old star.

Geek Girl is a likably wholesome, generally low-stakes YA fairy tale — references to...
