This Day That Year: A look at Gritty Thanks Maa
Image
Once again, Subhash K Jha revisits a film in his This Day That Year series, this installment shines the spotlight on the film Thanks Maa. A gritty hard hitting drama of a street kid’s search for an infant’s mother also, according to the director, paid a tribute to Salman Khan’s career.

Strongly reminiscent of Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay and far more resonantly representative of Mumbai’s slum kids than Slumdog Millionaire, Thanks Maa, which clocks fifteen years on March 5, is a journey into lives that were born into despair. Without the crutches of self-pity, debutant director Irfan Kamal (son of the reputed choreographer Kamal) enters the world of the orphaned protagonist named Municipality, who, on one of those routine days of scavenging, stealing, and hanging around with his friends waiting for the next meal comes across an abandoned little infant. The film shows the gritty, harsh...

‘Pind Daan’ Review | Juxstaposes duty & darkness
Image
Often we seem to believe that men in uniform have a typical stature. We look at them with utmost respect and assume that their might is invincible. But are we totally correct? Not that it is incorrect but what we tend to not see or rather what is hidden behind the strong uniform is anyways a human being who also has his life. What we see is just the front ignoring the human side of the person.

Shiv Patil (Aadil Jaipuri), is a young police officer in the Mumbai police department. He is portrayed to have a very strong outer demeanour, however, one stimulus and he struggles with his deeply ingrained turbulence of emotions. Shiv oscillates between his professional duty of protecting a woman from marital atrocities on one hand, while also taking care of his pregnant sister and on the other hand, he is has a devastated inner child resulting from a dark past.

The Warrior Queen of Jhansi Movie Review
Since her death over 160 years ago, stories have been told across India about the great warrior Rani of Jhansi. Now, her tale comes to life for a broader audience in the brand new film The Warrior Queen of Jhansi.

Directed by Swati Bhise, The Warrior Queen of Jhansi tells the true story of the legendary Rani (translation: Queen) of Jhansi, an icon in India and a fearless freedom fighter. After being wronged by the East India Company Rani resolves to defend her late husband’s kingdom. Rani instructs her all female army in the art of swordplay, a tactic unheard of during this time. Then in 1857, this 24-year old General led her people into battle against the British Empire. While the Rani’s fate is shadowed in mystery, the courageous rebellion she inspired proved instrumental in changing the balance of power in the region. The Armani’s fight for what...

Devika Bhise in Full Us Trailer for 'The Warrior Queen of Jhansi' Film
"Is that young queen still refusing to submit to company rule?" Roadside Attractions has just unveiled an official Us trailer for an Indian historical action drama titled The Warrior Queen of Jhansi, also known as Swords and Sceptres: The Rani of Jhansi while in development. A tale of women's empowerment, The Warrior Queen of Jhansi tells the true story of Lakshmibai, the historic Queen of Jhansi who fiercely led her army against the British East India Company in the infamous mutiny of 1857. She is played by Devika Bhise in this film, and seems to be a bonafide warrior of both past & present. The full cast includes Jodhi May, Rupert Everett, Derek Jacobi, Nathaniel Parker, Ben Lamb, Omar Malik, R. Bhakti Klein, Arif Zakaria, and Yatin Karyekar. This looks especially cheesy, and if it weren't a true story, I'd say this is worth skipping. But it does look like an inspiring story.

'A1' review: Santhanam's comedy film is half-boil only
Review'A1' offers some laughs and exposes people's hypocrisy; the lack of layers is easily explained – this is a Santhanam film and not lasagna. Sowmya RajendranA1 directed by Johnson K has already raised hackles for showing a Brahmin woman attempting to eat a half-boil in the film's trailer. Minor spoiler: she doesn't actually eat it in the film. But I doubt that those who objected would be mollified. This is a strange film, and the more I think about it, the more I think a half-boil perfectly describes it – parts of it look well-cooked, but the rest is just runny and messy. Divya (Tara Alisha Berry) falls in love with Saravanan (Santhanam) after he displays his machismo to save her from a bunch of old men. Rather, she falls in love with the naamam on his forehead, assuming that he's an Iyengar. She plants a kiss on his lips as if to seal the deal,...
