Indian Producers’ Associations Warn of Box Office Bloodbath After Donald Trump’s 100% Tariff Bombshell
Image
Indian producers associations are sounding the alarm over President Donald Trump’s recent proposal to implement a 100% tariff on foreign-produced films entering the U.S. market, a move that threatens the $100 million theatrical business that Indian cinema currently enjoys in America.

Shibashish Sarkar, president of the Producers Guild of India, cautions that it’s still early to fully assess the situation. “It is a little early to comment as global film industries and stakeholders are still processing what is the objective of the statement by President Trump, and what exactly it will solve for Hollywood. Also as we see from his other announcements on tariffs, things change till it’s implemented,” Sarkar tells Variety.

If implemented, Sarkar believes the immediate impact would be on theatrical distribution. “Indian films do about $100 million dollar +/- at the gross box office level in the U.S. If this tariff gets implemented, either the...

Khakee: The Bengal Chapter Season 1 Review: Crime, Corruption, and Cops
Image
Khakee: The Bengal Chapter arrives as a standalone sequel to its Bihar predecessor, transporting viewers back to early-2000s Kolkata. The series opens on a tense highway crash that leaves a prominent shipping magnate dead, instantly exposing the porous boundary between politics and crime. A Special Investigation Team (Sit) is assembled to take down Shankar “Bagha” Barua (Saswata Chatterjee), a gangster whose reach extends into the highest echelons of power.

In casting Parambrata Chattopadhyay as Ips Saptarshi Sinha, the show nods to Bollywood’s tradition of morally driven lawmen, while Jeet’s Ips Arjun Maitra embodies a more modern, global archetype of the flawed hero—an approach that echoes Scandinavian noir’s emphasis on internal conflict. Bagha’s henchmen, Sagor Talukdar (Ritwik Bhowmik) and Ranjit Thakur (Aadil Zafar Khan), bring burdens of loyalty and ambition that evoke the layered criminal families of parallel cinema. On the political front, Prosenjit Chatterjee...

When Shatrughan Sinha Opened Up About His Rift With Amitabh Bachchan, Revealing A Fight Sequence Is Partly The Reason: “Amitabh’s Team Approved Of The Scene”
Image
Shatrughan Sinha Once Revealed How A Fight Sequence Filming Was The Reason Behind His Rift With Amitabh Bachchan (Photo Credit –Facebook)

Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha are two of the stalwarts of the Hindi film industry. They both have established themselves in showbiz with their traits, and their long-running alleged feud has always been a hot topic in the media. Sinha once revealed that it started from a fight sequence in Yash Chopra’s Kaala Patthar. Keep scrolling for deets.

However, the veteran actor acknowledged that his and Big B’s relationship eventually soured due to professional and personal differences. In his memoir, Sinha suggested that a contributing factor to their estrangement might have been the presence of a well-known actress—widely believed to be Rekha—who was linked with Big B then.

Kaala Patthar was an action drama directed by Yash Chopra and featuring an ensemble cast of Shashi Kapoor,...

Shatrughan Sinha Lauds Kartik Aaryan’s Dominance In Bollywood, Says “Every Ten Years The Film Industry Gets…”
Image
What Did Shatrughan Sinha Say About Kartik Aaryan? (Photo Credit – Instagram/Twitter)

Kartik Aaryan is amongst the youngest Bollywood actors to have successfully cemented his status as a superstar. With back-to-back hits and a strong mass appeal, his ability to shoulder film, deliver record-breaking numbers, and connect effortlessly with audiences has made him a favorite not just among fans but also the industry.

More recently, veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha showered praises on Aaryan and acknowledged his impact on Bollywood. “Every ten years, the film industry gets one outsider who takes over the industry. Now it’s Kartik Aaryan,” Sinha shared.

“Jab main aaya tha toh baahar ka tha. I had no connections with the industry,” the actor added while admiring Kartik Aaryan’s journey and drawing parallels to his own struggles as an outsider in Bollywood.

Prosenjit Chatterjee, Parambrata Chattopadhyay, and Jeet in Khakee: Chronique d'un flic du Bengal (2025)
Khakee: The Bengal Chapter (2025) TV Series Review: Perfectly Serviceable, Unsubtle Cop and Gangster Drama
Prosenjit Chatterjee, Parambrata Chattopadhyay, and Jeet in Khakee: Chronique d'un flic du Bengal (2025)
In the second episode of “Khakee: The Bengal Chapter” (2025), a pivotal scene between the General Secretary of the Ruling Party and resident puppet master, Borun Roy (Prosenjit Chatterjee), and the newly inducted head of the Special Investigative Task Force, Arjun Maitra (Jeet), sees Roy explaining the system as a symphony, with each section contributing to the evocation or efficient running of said symphony/system.

I suppose that could be the baseline driving the creative direction of Neeraj Pandey as he shepherds a spin-off/second season of his popular 2022 series—”Khakee: The Bihar Chapter.” Like its progenitor, this “chapter” is also researched and based on true events, but it constructs an original story around those events. Writers Debatma Mandal and Samrat Chakraborty, along with Pandey, set the story majorly in 2002, with key moments flashed back to 1991 and one specific origin story to 1988.

In this iteration of Kolkata, the ruling party has...

This Day That Year: Subhash K Jha On Anubhav Sinha‘s Thappad
Image
This time in his terrific This Day That Year feature series Subhash K Jha looks at Anubhav Sinha’s Thappad, which released in 2020 and featured the brilliant Taapsee Pannu.

Damaged humanism, fractured emotions, and flawed relationships are the crux of Great Cinema. If there was no Auschwitz, there would be no Schindler’s List. If Madhubala had not died so young, would we still think of her as being so unattainable? And if Romeo and Juliet had lived happily ever after, would Shakespeare’s play have become a timeless classic?

Thappad is a flawed but important film on a fractured marriage. Like director Anubhav Sinha’s earlier monumental works Mulk and Article 15, Thappad tears at the hypocrisy of the middle class to show how pathetically short we fall as a collective nation when it comes to basic human rights even within the four walls of private homes.

The issue in Thappad is ostensibly solvable.

Sholay & Deewar: This Veteran Star Was The First Choice Over Amitabh Bachchan!
Image
Bollywood’s Biggest Casting What-If (Photo Credit – Prime Video/Youtube)

Amitabh Bachchan is a name most synonymous with Indian cinema. Over the past five decades, Big B has defined stardom and versatility again and again. Aptly referred to as the “Shahenshah of Bollywood,” Bachchan’s journey from struggling actor to global icon is nothing short of legendary. His towering performances in films like Sholay (1975) and Deewar (1975) cemented his status as the “angry young man” of Indian cinema. These films not only transformed his career but also redefined the Bollywood narrative with their stories and memorable characters.

Interestingly, these iconic roles, which became the cornerstone of Bachchan’s legacy, almost went to another veteran of Bollywood. Before Amitabh immortalized Vijay in Deewar and Jai in Sholay, these roles were initially offered to Shatrughan Sinha, who was a bigger name in Bollywood at the time than Bachchan. However, Sinha declined these opportunities...

One, a pivotal project in his career. In a frank discussion, Sinha talked about the hurdles he encountered during production, which ultimately contributed to the film’s struggles.

The Birth of Ra.One

Sinha shared that he first came up with the idea for Ra.One back in 2005 and started writing it the next year. However, it wasn’t until Shah Rukh Khan announced the film at a press event in Berlin that things really kicked off. Sinha recalled being bombarded with calls for eight straight hours, unable to confirm the news. When he finally got in touch with Khan, the actor simply said, “Why hide it?”

“Kalicharan Was Meant To Be Played By Me,” Shatrughan Sinha On 49 Years Of Subhash Ghai’s Kalicharan
Image
Subhash Ghai’s surprise winner Kalicharan was released on February 7, 1976. Kalicharan was produced by N.N.Sippy, directed by Subhash Ghai, and starred Shatrughan Sinha, Reena Roy, and Premnath. The music by Kalyanji-Anandji was a hit, especially Lataji’s ‘Ja re ja oh harjayee’.

When Subhash Ghai gave up his dreams of becoming a successful actor, he did what all failed actors do: He became a film director. And what better actor to play the lead than close friend and Ftii colleague Shatrughan Sinha?

With Kalicharan, Sinha temporarily discarded the mantle of villainy to plunge into what came to be known as glorified goondaism. The toughie’s part seemed to be written for Shatrughan. Ghai and Sinha came together once again for another tough-guys-don’t-dance frolic in Vishwanath two years later. But this cricketer-titled actioner failed to impress audiences. Looking back at Kalicharan, the leading man’s bombastic dialogues, matched by Premnath’s phlegmatic counterpoints,...

The Great Indian Kapil Show S2 Ep 10 Review Ft. Shatrughan – Sonakshi Sinha: After Sunil Grover Exits Even The Laughter Went Khamosh!
Image
The Great Indian Kapil Show S2 Ep 10: The Laughter Goes Khamosh! (Photo Credit – Instagram)

The Great Indian Kapil Show, in another episode, hosted Sonakshi Sinha and her family. Sonakshi Sinha, Zaheer Iqbal, Poonam Sinha, and Shatrughan Sinha arrived on the chat show for loads of fun. The episode started on a funny note, discussing Sonakshi’s wedding and her dynamics with Zaheer.

There were discussions about how everyone in the family was happy with the wedding, contradicting the reports about the family having a problem with Zaheer and Sonakshi’s relationship.

Isn’t Shatrughan Sinha Problematic?

The episode went on a heartwarming note when Sonakshi was unapologetically discussing her relationship and its different phases. However, I am still confused, is it only me who finds Shatrughan Sinha‘s toxic jokes on marriage and cheating on relationships problematic or do I overthink!?

Image
When Netflix’s “Squid Game” became a global phenomenon in 2021, it catapulted its cast into the international spotlight. For Anupam Tripathi, the India-born, Korea-based actor who portrayed Ali Abdul, it marked a turning point in his career that has since spanned continents and industries.

“After ‘Squid Game,’ life has turned around a lot for me,” Tripathi tells Variety. “Everybody knows me in the Korean industry now.” Post “Squid Game,” Tripathi played the role of Prince Samir in Korean drama “King the Land,” which brought increased public recognition. “It happens every time,” he says of being recognized on the streets. “People remember me. They call me Ali. And sometimes after ‘King the Land,’ they started calling me Prince.”

The actor’s rise hasn’t been limited to Korea. He recently appeared in Anubhav Sinha’s hit Netflix India series “Ic 814: The Kandahar Hijack,” based on the real-life hijacking of an...

Ic 814: The Kandahar Hijack Review- A Harrowing Odyssey Retold
Image
Based on the traumatic hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight 814 in 1999, Netflix’s Ic 814: The Kandahar Hijack takes a compelling look at the intense saga through multiple lenses. Helmed by acclaimed director Anubhav Sinha and starring big-name talents like Vijay Varma, Naseeruddin Shah, and Pankaj Kapur, the six-part miniseries aims to transport viewers back in time to witness the harrowing ordeal as it unfolded for those in the air and on the ground.

On December 24, 1999, Indian Airlines flight Ic 814 was seized mid-journey from Kathmandu to Delhi by a group of terrorists. Over the next unimaginable seven days, 171 terrified passengers and crew were held hostage thousands of feet in the sky. Meanwhile, a team of government officials and negotiators desperately worked behind the scenes on the ground to facilitate the plane’s safe landing and passengers’ release. Through this high-stakes drama, Sinha explores the crisis from start to finish through multiple moving parts.

“Ic 815 The Kandahar Hijack Defines The Edge-of-the-Seat Experience” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
For six gripping and flab-free episodes of Anubhav Sinha’s revisitation of the Kandahar hijacking, I forgot to breathe. Yes, it is that engaging. So for those who may want to ask, ‘Why another series on the oft-visited Kandahar hijack episode?’ the answer is elementary: no matter how many times you visit a shameful chapter of history, for example the holocaust, you come up with a new perspective on what precipitates a historic mess up of this magnitude.

In this case, the hijacked plane had landed for emergency fuelling in Amritsar. The hijackers could have been nabbed at this point in the crisis. Redtapism blew our chances. As it often does.

Anubhav Sinha doesn’t make the same mistake. He reconstructs the entire episode with a vigour that repudiates any technical error. Sinha is in his element here, mixing the authenticity of documentation with the rigours of fictionalization. The end-result is steady ….and heady.

‘Ic 814: The Kandahar Attack’ Netflix Review: Less Of A History Lesson, More Of A Tragedy Cosplay
Image
There is a pretty thick line between using history to educate audiences and using history to benefit from certain (problematic) political trends that are being promoted through the world of entertainment. Now, there’s no doubt about the fact that there are so many unbelievable events happening nationally and internationally that it’s difficult to document everything so that the common man can be aware of such occurrences. And highlighting these incidents through movies or shows is necessary. But the act of repeatedly telling a well-documented incident via several movies feels odd. I mean, if a real-life story has been adapted in the form of feature films five times already, then artists should understand that taking yet another swipe at it will make it seem like they’re milking a tragic story to stoke certain nationalist sentiments. Well, I guess the makers of Ic 814: The Kandahar Attack weren’t hit with that realization,...

Anubhav Sinha Talks Taking Flight With Netflix’s ‘Ic 814’ Hijack Drama (Exclusive)
Image
After a 27-year hiatus from television, veteran Indian filmmaker Anubhav Sinha is making his streaming series debut with Netflix’s “Ic 814: The Kandahar Hijack.”

The six-episode thriller, based on the 1999 hijacking of an Indian Airlines flight, marks Sinha’s first return to long-form storytelling since his early days in television, which includes Dd Metro series “Sea Hawks.”

The drama, adapted from the book “Flight Into Fear” by Captain Devi Sharan and Srinjoy Chowdhury, explores the crisis from multiple angles. It offers a multifaceted look at the incident, showcasing the tense negotiations in Delhi’s War Room, the high-stakes diplomacy at Taliban-controlled Kandahar, and the terrifying ordeal faced by passengers and crew aboard the hijacked aircraft.

Sinha, known for socially conscious films like “Article 15” and “Thappad,” initially resisted the idea of making a series. “I was doing films, so I wasn’t interested,” he tells Variety. However, a persistent...

Shatrughan Sinha gets discharged from hospital from Mumbai’s Kokilaben Ambani Hospital
Shatrughan Sinha recently addressed rumors about his health following his admission to Kokilaben Hospital last weekend. Denying reports of a fall from a sofa and subsequent surgery, Sinha clarified the situation with a touch of humor, saying, “Arrey bhai, mujhe surgery hui aur mujhe khud nahin maloom.”

He pointed out that his extensive election campaigning over the past three months, combined with his daughter’s recent wedding, had taken a toll on his energy levels. “I’m no longer that hot-blooded energy-driven young man who could do three shifts a day and still have the energy to party all night. I need to slow down,” he said in an interview with Times Now/Zoom.

Reflecting on his daughter’s wedding, Sinha expressed his happiness and gratitude. “It all went off well.

She remembered how, despite being Shatrughan Sinha’s daughter, she had no experience of being on a film’s set and no formal training in acting or dancing, starting off “:completely from scratch”.

I had no experience of being on a film’s set. I never visited my dad on sets when I was a child and I had no training in acting or dancing. I was not groomed for the profession. I was literally thrown into the deep end of the pool and was told to swim. That’s how I learnt.”

Sinha, whose father is the actor and politician Shatrughan Sinha, made her Bollywood debut with smash hit “Dabangg” (2010) and has starred in more than 30 films since then, alongside top actors including Rajinikanth, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar.

Set in a small, sleepy town in Rajasthan, western India, “Dahaad” is an eight-part crime drama that follows sub-inspector Anjali Bhaati (Sinha) and her colleagues at the local police station. When a series of women are mysteriously found dead, Bhaati is tasked with the investigation.

“The most challenging aspect of the role was actually to keep it as real as possible, because coming from the school of cinema that I’ve been a part of, for so many years, there’s been times where there have been a few realistic roles, but there’s been mostly those commercial...

Robot-assisted surgeries will transform healthcare in country: Indian-origin surgeon
Image
Dr Bhandari, a Padma Shri awardee and also director, robotic research and education, Vattikuti Urology Institute, Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit (Michigan), told Ians that although the initial investment in robotic surgical equipment can be expensive, robotic surgery may ultimately result in lower overall healthcare costs due to shorter hospital stays, faster recovery times, and potentially fewer complications.

"It is important to note that the cost-effectiveness of robotic surgery depends on several factors, including the type of procedure, the patient’s medical history, and the availability of skilled robotic surgeons," he noted.

Dr Bhandari stressed that while robotic surgery has the potential to improve healthcare in India by increasing access to medical care and potentially reducing costs, it is important to ensure that the technology is used appropriately and that patients receive high-quality care from fully trained surgeons.

"One of the missions of the Vattikuti Foundation is to train high-quality robotic surgeons through its fellowship programmes,...

“Bheed Is A Masterpiece “ – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Bheed

Directed by Anubhav Sinha

For my time and attention, Anubhav Sinha is the finest contemporary filmmaker of Hindi cinema. He makes the films that he wants to. Whether the audience participates in his compelling creative process(Mulk, Article 15) or not(Anek) Anubhav is fine with it.

Bheed comes too close to the actual trauma of the Lockdown for comfort. Assuredly this masterpiece on a real palpable immediate chunk of history makes us uncomfortable, as cinema was always supposed to.

But then we decided we wanted our cinema to be a song-and-dance nautanki. Anubhav Sinha, God bless his fearless soul, decided with Mulk to move away from the bheed, no pun intended. Look where he has reached now! Bheed is our own Schindler’s List. And I don’t mean just the black-and-white photography which could have been somewhat gimmicky in lesser hands.

Sinha and his incredibly articulate camera person...

Anubhav Sinha Talks ‘Bheed,’ Reveals Benaras Mediaworks Slate (Exclusive)
Image
After “Mulk” (2018), “Article 15” (2019), “Thappad” (2020) and “Anek” (2022), filmmaker Anubhav Sinha is back with “Bheed,” another hard-hitting film that shines a light on the fabric of Indian society.

The film is set during the 2020 Indian pandemic lockdown and tells the poignant story of migrant workers stranded without basic necessities while trying to go home to their villages. Shot in black and white, it is deliberately evocative of the 1947 partition of the Indian subcontinent into India and Pakistan when people were uprooted from their homes in the largest migration in history.

“When the pandemic hit, people were seeking help on Twitter. Everybody had different strengths so we were helping each other and, and I really got sucked into it. And that was the time when I felt that this film had to be made, this period of time has to be recorded, and I didn’t want it to be just a Coronavirus film,...

'Bheed' trailer presents two Indias divided by privilege
Image
Mumbai, March 10 (Ians) The trailer of the upcoming film ‘Bheed’, which stars an ensemble cast, was unveiled on Friday.

The film, directed by Anubhav Sinha of ‘Article 15’ fame, is completely in monochrome and tells the story from India’s recent history of the first nationwide lockdown after Covid-19 was recognised as a health emergency in 2020 and how the migrant workers were ill treated by the authorities as they walked miles for days together at a stretch to reach their homes.

The trailer, which is under 3 minutes in length, starts off with a voice-over of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s famous address to the nation wherein he called for a complete nationwide lockdown, which became the harshest lockdown in the entire world. The corresponding imagery shows migrant workers struggling and getting their hands on whatever available resources they could arrange as they brave police brutality and humiliating treatment by the authorities in their own homeland.

Rajkummar Rao, Bhumi Pednekar’s Lockdown Drama ‘Bheed’ Presented in Black and White, Evoking 1947 Partition (Exclusive)
Image
Anubhav Sinha’s upcoming social drama “Bheed,” starring Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar, is a rarity in contemporary Indian cinema in that it is made completely in black and white.

Images from the film, which is set during the 2020 Indian pandemic lockdown and tells the hard-hitting story of migrant workers stranded without basic necessities while trying to go home to their villages, are deliberately evocative of the 1947 partition of the Indian subcontinent into India and Pakistan and people were uprooted from their homes in the largest migration in history.

Sinha said: ” ‘Bheed’ is a story of the most perilous times which changed everything for humanity. The key objective of shooting the film in black and white was to showcase how the visuals of the social disparity during India’s lockdown were strikingly similar to what people went through during the 1947 India partition. This story is about people whose lives changed...
