‘Before’ Co-Star Judith Light Talks Teaming Up With Long Time Friend Billy Crystal For Apple TV+ Psychological Thriller
Image
Written by Sarah Thorp, Apple TV+’s latest psychological thriller Before follows Eli (Billy Crystal), a child psychiatrist who, after recently losing his wife, Lynn (Judith Light), is charged to take care of a troubled young boy who has a mysterious and haunting connection to Eli’s past. While struggling to make sense of the connection, Eli also begins experiencing intense hallucinations involving Lynn’s death, which might not be as clear-cut as it seems. Eli digs deeper into the hidden life of the wife he thought he knew, only to find that Lynn is haunting him from beyond the grave.

Here, Light speaks to Deadline about mindfulness, reincarnation and working with her cast and crew to bring this spine-tingling dynamic to life.

Deadline: Once upon a time, you played a real-life murderer, Audrey Marie Hilley, in Wife, Mother, Murderer alongside David Ogden Stiers. And lately, you’ve been in...

Chloé Zhao’s ‘Hamnet’ Sets Awards-Friendly November Release
Image
“There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.”

This famous line from Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” rings particularly apt now that Chloé Zhao’s “Hamnet” has been slated for an awards-friendly November release. This adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s own award-winning historical novel stars Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley as William Shakespeare and his wife, Agnes. Focus Features has set a limited theatrical release for the Elizabethan-era drama on November 27, followed by a nationwide expansion on December 12.

In addition to landing within the window for an awards season play, the film also seems to be setting itself up as an “adult option” for moviegoers during the holiday season. It hits select theaters the same time as “Zootopia 2” and expands right as “Avatar: Fire & Ash” and “Spongebob: Search for Square Pants” begin their rollouts. It also marks a return for Zhao to independent filmmaking after helming...

Chloe Zhao’s ‘Hamnet,’ Starring Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley, Sets November Release Date
Image
Chloe Zhao’s next film “Hamnet” has secured a prime awards season release date.

Focus Features, which is backing the Shakespeare-era historical drama, will open in limited release on Nov. 27 before expanding nationwide on Dec. 12. “Hamnet” lands in select theaters on the same day as Pixar’s “Zootopia 2” and hopes to serve as counterprogramming when the film widens its footprint in mid December, a week before James Cameron’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash” and Paramount’s “SpongeBob: Search for SquarePants.”

Adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 novel, “Hamnet” fictionalizes the life of the Bard’s son who died at a young age and recounts the powerful love story that inspired the creation of “Hamlet.” Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley will star in the film as William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes alongside Joe Alwyn as Bartholomew and Jacobi Jupe as Hamnet.

Zhao wrote the screenplay with O’Farrell, whose book...

While every major media outlet will suck up to major Hollywood stars because they need access to interviews and video clips for search engine optimization, I cannot ignore how Jake Gyllenhaal is woefully miscast in the role of Rusty Sabich. It becomes increasingly evident as the series progresses.

Stephen King Loves This Horror Series Despite Its 32% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
You don't always have to agree with Stephen King, but when the master of horror recommends a film or series, you should, at the very least, hear him out. Moreover, the author's horror-related opinions rarely miss, and he often rallies for overlooked genre gems like "The Autopsy of Jane Doe" and John Griffin's gripping sci-fi horror series "From," which you might not have heard of. In the past, King has also taken to X/Twitter to (rightfully) dunk on certain genre entries, including sharing his opinion about the worst horror film he has ever seen or beloved blockbusters he walked out of as an adult. Recently, though, King took to Instagram Threads to recommend a critically maligned Apple TV+ series starring Billy Crystal, writing:

"Before (Apple+): This show has a creepy Exorcist vibe, and Billy Crystal is very good. Short and scary episodes."

"Before" is currently standing at 32% on...

Cliff-hangers and a “World I Hadn’t Lived In”: Why Billy Crystal Made Rare TV Move to Star in ‘Before’
Image
The Billy Crystal-starring Apple TV+ series Before is not only a dramatic turn for the actor-comedian, but it also marks a rare TV-starring gig for the veteran performer known for his roles in movies like When Harry Met Sally and Analyze This.

Crystal, who also executive produces the show, had been working on the project with screenwriter Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, Killers of the Flower Moon), exploring the idea of a “pediatric psychiatrist dealing with a troubled kid whose trauma is something unexplained,” Crystal said.

But it wasn’t until Roth brought on writer Sarah Thorp, who would go on to serve as showrunner and an executive producer, alongside Roth and others, on the series, that Crystal thought of playing the psychiatrist character Eli.

“When she pitched her vision for Eli and his world and what the world might be, I instantly said, ‘Sarah, stop, I’m going to do this.

Billy Crystal Says 'Before' Was Almost a Totally Different Show Without Him
Image
The Apple TV+ series Before ended its run today, Dec. 20, 2024, with the back half of the supernatural thriller becoming increasingly intense. Billy Crystal gives a great dramatic performance as a widowed child psychiatrist who becomes dangerously obsessed with the strange case of a young foster child (Jacobi Jupe) and the many creepy coincidences and connections between them. In many ways, Before became a different show (and arguably a much better one) than many people expected after the first two episodes of the series. But as Crystal told MovieWeb, the whole series was almost completely different. "It really started as a whole different show," said Crystal in our interview, explaining:

"It started out as a show called Death Bed, which was about a 100-year-old guy who was working with a gerontologist aid, and he gives him a list of people that he wants to see, and the people then come in and out of his life.

"Creepy Exorcist Vibe": Stephen King Praises New Apple TV+ Thriller, Siding With The Audience On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Stephen King shares his praise for a new Apple TV+ thriller, matching the audience's sentiment. Apple TV+ has been on a run of consistently releasing new original shows over the past few years, with the genre frequently falling into the thriller category. Oftentimes, those thrillers will have a sci-bent, with Silo, Dark Matter, and Severance. But the preference for tense stories also extends beyond the science fiction realm.

Lady in the Lake, led by Natalie Portman, was a murder mystery presented as a thriller. The same is true for The Crowded Room, starring Tom Holland and Amanda Seyfried, which was a crime drama that often veered into the direction of a paranoid and shaky narrative with an unreliable protagonist at the center. One of the newest thrillers from the streamer continues the trend, including another big actor, though responses have been split.

Before Soundtrack Guide: Every Song & When They Play In Billy Crystal's Drama Show
Image
Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Before!

Apple TV+'s Before includes very few songs in the soundtrack, making them all the more impactful and meaningful when they do appear. The psychological thriller follows the mysterious connection between a child psychologist and widower named Eli and a troubled young boy in the foster care system named Noah. After its release, the Billy Crystal show received extremely divided responses, with critics almost unilaterally debasing the show as boring, slow, and repetitive. The only part of the show they appreciate is Billy Crystal, the lead member of the cast in Before.

However, viewers were much more positive about Before, praising the slow-burn pacing and central mystery. One element that wasnt been discussed much by either group is the soundtrack of Before. The reason this has been all but ignored is because there are almost no songs in the Apple TV+ original show,...

Before Episode 4 Recap: Lynn's Secret Emails & 6 Other Reveals
Image
Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Before!

Episode 4 of Apple TV+'s Before continues to push the psychological thriller forward, revealing more details about the mysterious connection between Noah and Eli. The new episode is one of the slowest in the show so far, and the reveals arent as noticeable as those in previous episodes. However, they are still crucial to Befores main characters and the overall narrative.

While Before has leaned more heavily into the psychological part of its genre, the episode takes the strange connections and possible supernatural elements to a new level. While Noah seemed to have a connection to Eli in earlier episodes, this episode presents a possible connection between Lynn and Noah instead. The episode also reveals more about the mentality of Eli after the loss of his wife, furthering his isolation from his family and friends.

Interview: Billy Crystal, Jacobi Jupe, Judith Light, and Rosie Perez Talk Apple TV’s Before
Billy Crystal
Billy Crystal has long been a favorite of mine when it comes to comedy. Classics like When Harry Met Sally, Throw Momma From the Train and Cityslickers all played a part of my younger years. And now, a new audience is going to see Mr. Crystal in a very different type of role. Before, created by Sarah Thorp, offered the actor the chance to do something fresh. And something a little scary. The story revolves around a child psychiatrist dealing with the loss of his wife (Judith Light) and a troubled new patient (Jacobi Jupe). The cast also includes terrific performances from young Jupe and the lovely Rosie Perez. The new series is now playing on AppleTV+ (read our review Here).

Image
From ghosts to bloody visions of the past and possible future, there is a grand mystery at the heart of the Apple TV+ original psychological horror series Before. Created by Sarah Thorp, the series follows grieving child psychiatrist Eli (Billy Crystal), whose mourning over his late wife is interrupted by the sudden arrival of a troubled young boy named Noah (Jacobi Jupe), triggering disturbing visions for Eli and links to his own traumatic history. The specter of loss hangs heavily over the Apple TV+ original psychological horror series Before, created by Sarah Thorp, particularly over its driven protagonist. The show follows grieving child psychiatrist Eli (Billy Crystal), who is still mourning the death of his wife Lynn (Judith Light), though Lynn continues to appear to Eli as an apparition of his repressed feelings surrounding her illness and demise. Billy Crystal's New Apple TV+ Thriller Show Debuts On Rt With His Worst Score In 12 Years
Image
Before has earned a career-low Rotten Tomatoes score for star Billy Crystal. The actor, who is best known for his roles in comedies including When Harry Met Sally, Monsters, Inc., and City Slickers, stars in the Apple TV+ series as widower psychologist Eli, who discovers that he has a mysterious connection to his newest patient. The Before cast also includes Jacobi Jupe, Maria Dizzia, Ava Lalezarzadeh, Rosie Perez, Judith Light, Itzhak Perlman, and Miriam Shor.

Rotten Tomatoes has now tabulated a score for Before out of 12 different critics' reviews. While it could fluctuate as more reviews are added, at the time of writing, it is a firmly Rotten 33%. This marks the worst Rotten Tomatoes score for a project with Crystal in a major role since 2012, when he starred in both Parental Guidance (18%) and Small Apartments (30%). In general, it is his worst score since 2016's The Comedian (24%), in which he made a cameo as himself.

Apple TV+'s Before Cast & Character Guide
Image
Apple TV+'s Before not only presents a thrilling psychological drama but also features some memorable characters portrayed by talented cast members. Written by Sarah Thorp, Before has received an underwhelming reception from viewers and critics since its release. Many critics have expressed their disappointment in the Apple TV+ original show's inability to present a cohesive storyline and its over-the-top fantastical elements that gradually weigh down its initial promise of being a compelling and atmospheric psychological drama.

However, despite garnering negative reviews, Before has been appreciated for the performances of its cast members. Many have cited the leading star, Billy Crystal, as the show's only saving grace and even commended the performances of other familiar and new faces that appear in the series. Since the actors in Before have played a crucial role in making it more watchable, many viewers may be curious about who plays whom in the show...

Apple TV+'s Before Debuts With a Bleak Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
It looks as if Billy Crystals dark and dramatic turn hasnt been a big hit with critics thus far, as Apple TV+s new series Before has been slapped with a disastrous Rotten Tomatoes score upon its premiere today. Crystal stars in the psychological thriller as Eli Adler, a child psychologist with a troubled history who takes on a new client (Jacobi Jupe) who has a disturbing connection to his past. The series first two episodes dropped today, and will continue with one episode each week until its conclusion on December 20.

Per Rotten Tomatoes, Before currently sits at just a 20% rating from critics, though admittedly only five have managed to chime in this far on the website, so there is the possibility that it could rise. It should be noted that it has yet to receive an audience score, so well have to wait a little longer to find out what the public thinks.

Billy Crystal Surprised Even Himself Taking a Darker Leading Role in Apple TV+’s ‘Before’
Image
Billy Crystal is going darker than audiences have ever seen him before in “Before,” a new Apple TV+ psychological thriller premiering on Friday. But it was not a role that the actor and comedian expected to take on.

Crystal, who is best known for light-hearted roles in “When Harry Met Sally,” “City Slickers” and “Monsters Inc.,” plays child psychiatrist Eli, who encounters a troubled young boy named Noah (Jacobi Jupe) after recently losing his wife, Lynn (Judith Light). As Eli attempts to help Noah, their mysterious bond deepens, sparking haunting memories and unearthing unsettling secrets from the past.

He told TheWrap that the series, which he executive produced and developed in partnership with Eric Roth, went through many twists and turns to get to where it is today.

Before TV Review: Billy Crystal plays a dramatic role in this psychological thriller
Image
Plot: Eli is a child psychiatrist who, after recently losing his wife, Lynn, encounters a troubled young boy, Noah, who seems to have a haunting connection to Eli’s past. As Eli attempts to help Noah, their mysterious bond deepens, sparking haunting memories and unearthing unsettling secrets about the past.

Review: Billy Crystal is not known for his dramatic performances. To be fair, the legendary comedic actor has delivered performances that blend humor with serious moments, notably in projects like When Harry Met Sally, Throw Mama From The Train, and Mr. Saturday Night. Crystal has not headlined a fully dramatic project in his fifty-year career, making Before something of a surprise. A psychological thriller with elements of horror and mystery Before is a challenge for any performer, let alone a seventy-six-year-old like Billy Crystal. With an interesting premise and many twists and turns, Before is another unique offering from Apple...

Before Review — Billy Crystal Plays Against Type in This Disappointingly Hackneyed Psychological Horror Thriller
Image
There are two things I never thought I would say in the same sentence: “Billy Crystal stars in Before, an Eli Roth-produced psychological horror thriller.” While it’s refreshing to see Apple TV+ stream something more mainstream instead of the usual prestige projects that no one watches, this is a misstep in almost every way.

The series is poorly written, with disjointed scenes and weak tropes already filled with ’80s and ’90s thriller clichés. And when the story starts to trudge along, which is often, it throws in an inexplicable, dreamlike jump-scare cut that does nothing but cause headaches and a touch of vertigo. It’s only a matter of time Before the series sparks acute conversion boredom household-wide.

‘Before’ Is Exactly the Kind of Self-Serious Project Billy Crystal Used to Mock
Image
When Billy Crystal regularly hosted the Academy Awards, he liked to begin the show with a montage where he was inserted into the nominated films. The 2000 opening leaned more on Hollywood history, with Crystal appearing in vintage films like The Graduate and Psycho. There were still jokes about that year’s movies, though, like when a Charlie Chaplin homage included a title card where Crystal quoted the most famous line from The Sixth Sense: “I see dead people.” Crystal later had some more fun with the M. Night Shyamalan sensation with a song parody,...

‘Before’ Review: Billy Crystal Is Convincingly Somber in Apple TV+’s Otherwise Unconvincing Supernatural Dud
Image
I’m not saying Apple TV+ has an issue with repetitive storytelling, but the new drama Before is the service’s third series featuring a renowned comic actor playing a man mourning his dead wife. Not the streaming platform’s third series ever to rely on that hoary trope. Not even their third series this year to draw from that particular well.

Before, with Billy Crystal grieving a dead spouse, follows Disclaimer, with Kevin Kline grieving a dead spouse, and the second season of Shrinking, with Jason Segel still grieving a dead spouse. That’s three shows with this core conceit to premiere since… October 11.

Unfortunately, Big Widower Energy is far from the only way that Before feels like Apple TV+’s most Apple TV+ piece of programming to date. You could show me any glum, washed-out frame from Before and, even without knowing who was in it or what show it was from,...

Rosie Perez On Bringing Authenticity To The Apple TV+ Psychological Drama Before
Image
Before is a new psychological drama from Apple TV+ created by Sarah Thorp, Eric Roth, and legendary comedian Billy Crystal. The series stars Crystal as Eli, a child psychiatrist mourning the loss of his wife Lynn (Judith Light), who finds a troubled young boy named Noah (Jacobi Jupe) at his doorstep. What follows is a deep exploration into human connection and experience on both natural and supernatural levels.

A key character in Before is Denise, Noahs fiercely protective foster parent. Denise is played by Rosie Perez, who leveraged a personal connection to the story of Noah and Denise to bring a sense of authenticity to the role. Perez herself spent time in the foster care system as a child in New York, which led her to the role of Denise after initially being considered for another character.

"This Was Depressing! - Rosie Perez Connects With Apple TV+s Before
Image
The Apple TV+ original psychological horror series Before puts its characters through the emotional wringer as child psychiatrist Eli (Billy Crystal) finds himself increasingly obsessed with a disturbed boy named Noah (Jacobi Jupe). Noah's adoptive mother is Denise, played by Rosie Perez, who quickly finds herself drawn into the dark, violent mystery around Noah and his strange connection to Eli. This leads Denise to step up as Eli and Noah's behavior becomes more erratic, with her ready to do anything it takes to keep her son safe from the paranormal forces tormenting him.

In an exclusive interview with Cbr, Before actor Rosie Perez reveals how personal the role of Denise was for her to play, explains how she maintained the raw emotional intensity required for her performance and hints at high stakes for Before ahead of the series premiere on Apple TV+ this October.

Cbr: There's a line that Denise says later in the show,...

Billy Crystal & Jacobi Jupe Discuss Starring In The New Apple TV+ Psychological Thriller Before
Image
Before is a new psychological thriller that deals with grief, trauma, and the supernatural. The idea was brought to life by none other than comedian Billy Crystal, Killers of the Flower Moon writer Eric Roth, and showrunner/writer Sarah Thorp. The show tells the story of a child psychiatrist who, while grieving the loss of his wife, comes across a troubled young boy seemingly destined to change his life.

The dynamic at the heart of Before is that between Billy Crystals child psychiatrist Eli and that boy, Noah, who shows up at his door. Noah is played by Peter Pan & Wendy actor Jacobi Jupe, who makes the most of his performance in spite of the fact that his character is largely silent throughout the series. Still, Crystal and Jupe make the most of their relationship, which is the catalyst for some of the storys biggest moments.

Before Trailer: Billy Crystal Is A Tortured Psychiatrist In Apple TV+ Thriller Series
Image
In Rob Reiner's classic 80s rom-com When Harry Met Sally, there's a moment where Billy Crystal's Harry asks Meg Ryan's Sally, "Don't you have a dark side?" And whilst in that film, as in so many others over the years, that question serves as the set-up for a Crystal comic zinger, in Sarah Thorp's upcoming Apple TV+ psychological thriller Before, it looks like we'll be seeing the iconic funnyman's own dark side for the first time. Here, Crystal plays Eli, a grieving child psychiatrist who develops an inexplicable bond with troubled patient Noah (Jacobi Jupe) — and if the first trailer's anything to go by, then it looks like things may be about to take a turn for the supernatural in Crystal's dramatic lead debut. Check it out:

Dead wife. Creepy farmhouse. Even creepier kid. And a dramatic rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone'? Monsters, Inc. this ain't.

“Of course,” Eli says. “It was the day my wife died.”
