Born David Jon Nordstrand in Minneapolis, Minnesota to parents Carmen and Barry, both of largely Scandinavian heritage. His parents identified his performance skills early into his career as a broadcast journalist during his time at the University of Missouri. He later transferred to the University of San Francisco to pursue a career in the arts.
